My 8 year old daughter loves this song because the beginning sounds like the scene of the wicked witch's soldiers in the Wizard of Oz. I love it because it is pure metal greatness....
That riff at 6:35 is maybe my favorite riff ever. The buildup, the drum fill and then into that which leads to a godly solo! Fuck! Still hits me everytime!

When left to their own devices (Death Magnetic and Hardwired) they reverted back to longer songs.
@@tomwisniewski8988 Wrong. It was always Hetfield's plan to write shorter songs after Justice. He said he thought people looked bored when they played something long from the Justice album.
it's those guitar harmonies after the second chorus, where you think it's building up to a solo but it's actually building up to fake you out with a whole new guitar riff 16 measures before the solo even takes off. and then the solo takes off, and then there's the incredible unified riff after it, and then he sings "myself is after me..." and then that laugh! Kirk has written so many great and iconic solos. I honestly can't pick a favorite. He inspired me to play guitar. He does these sneaky great things in his solos, like the arpeggio he busts into in "Trapped Under Ice" for example.
I was actually at the And Justice For All tour when this album was released. I can’t wait for the finale! My favorite on the album. I was a late teen at the time, so it resonated a bit! Keep up the great work!
I saw metallica when they did this "by request" tour, best concert of my life. Hearing Orion live was almost like a religious experience since Cliff Burton was and still is my biggest musical inspiration. They also played The Call of Ktulu which brought a tear to my eye, this band is simply amazing
the band doesn’t hate it (Rob actually loves it. It’s one of the first songs of theirs he wanted to learn), it just scares the shit out of them because James even admitted it’s too dark. The beginning is the chant from the Wizard of Oz when the witches goons were marching into the castle. The castle represented a “dark and scary” place for Dorothy and crew. A dark a scary place is exactly where the band was when they recorded this song.
@@GenX_Dave Interesting. It's just like the song Dave Mustaine wrote on the peace cells album called the conjuring, and Megadeth never play that song live because Dave practiced black magic in his youth hence the song. But in recent years they played it for the first time after 17 years.

The solo to Ride the Lightning is so good. To be honest, it is probably one of Metallica’s greatest solos, if not their greatest solo.
@Mooneyham Mafia I think one of their longest solos is from hit the lights
Kirk has written so many great and iconic solos. I honestly can't pick a favorite. He inspired me to play guitar. He does these sneaky great things in his solos, like the arpeggio he busts into in "Trapped Under Ice" for example.
Every time you go back and listen to an old metallica album, you can recall 40 songs you love inspired by it. That's why they're legends.
I think the riff under the solo is the coolest riff in this song
I was actually at the And Justice For All tour when this album was released. I can’t wait for the finale! My favorite on the album. I was a late teen at the time, so it resonated a bit! Keep up the great work!
"I can totally see Metallica starting to play this on stage"
Oh, the irony...
I saw metallica when they did this "by request" tour, best concert of my life. Hearing Orion live was almost like a religious experience since Cliff Burton was and still is my biggest musical inspiration. They also played The Call of Ktulu which brought a tear to my eye, this band is simply amazing
Been my favorite song on the album for years
It's a shame the entire band hates it
They dont hate it its difficult to play it live thats all
the band doesn’t hate it (Rob actually loves it.
@@oskarjonsson9117 Nothing especially difficult about it, that's not the reason.
@@DM-rc4yu They actually struggled with this one live...
@@GenX_Dave Interesting. It's just like the song Dave Mustaine wrote on the peace cells album called the conjuring, and Megadeth never play that song live because Dave practiced black magic in his youth hence the song. But in recent years they played it for the first time after 17 years.
Imagine being a long-haired metal head in ‘89 when this album came out. It was AMAZING!!!! There were like 5 of us who wore the “...And Justice For All” t-shirt the Monday after getting the album the previous weekend. I was a sophomore and it was an incredible time to be alive. All this shit was BRAND NEW nobody had ever heard stuff like that and it TOOK OVER! Damn, I miss those days!
This is one of Metallica's best songs in my opinion.
Alex bro i got introduced to metallica when i think i was like 6yrs old from my older brother whom is 8yrs older than me...and to be honest when im feeling down or up that im in a bad mood i just blast these guys in me ears and im happy
