    Even with the knowledge that this was during the peak years of Jim Crow laws and lynching, this is particularly vile. But its necessary to show the kind of thinking that told audiences of that time had in allowing such things. I hope that some of the rap music of recent times will one day be looked upon with similar disgust.

    I think the problem we have in this country is that white people like to think the racism used to be at about a 9 and now it's down around a 2. But really, it used to be around 10,000 and now it's down around 4,000. Huge progress, sure. And still insanely racist. The idea we could come down from the country represented in this song in only 100 years is totally absurd.

      It was probably recorded on an Edison Phonograph cylinder before it was mechanically
      duplicaed onto a 78. Many early recordings were warbly because recording on an Edison
      phonograph was extreamly difficult compared to later recording equipment.
