I'm Black and interested in Americana like this. This song is exactly what I expected, even from a Black composer. What gets me about this recording is the performer himself. Dan W. Quinn just sounds like a dead tired Billy Murray.
Judging 1899 from a 2020s perspective simply does not work. Many interviews with vocalists and musicians from that period have survived. Overwhelmingly, they saw it differently. The artists in general got along fine with each other. They saw a track such as this not as confrontational nor derogatory, but as good natured humor amongst one another.
@@MrZlathan3 Black people opposed Obama too. He was the worst president in history until segregationist Joe Biden came along. I got here from the Sheet Music Singer rabbit hole. I must say, it’s a shame that so many of these early 20th century songs have such horribly racist lyrics because the melodies themselves are actually quite catchy. Ragtime is always a great sound. But again, shame about the lyrics...

Somehow this song was even more racist than I anticipated from the title. Prejudice aside, it's a terribly unoriginal song with uninventive lyrics and a bland melody. Its only value seems to be the novelty of the idea of a black president and the horribly racist imagery coming from that vision.
@@lukewarmlava2083 Trolling, although some comments on old racist songs like these are indeed serious in their racism, and I understand your confusion.
I question whther this song is truly from 1899. The White House was not referred to as the White House until Theodore Roosevelt established that name by executive order in 1901. Before that order it was called the Executive Mansion. I'm inclined to believe that this video was produced by a contemporary (21st century) white racist to appeal to other white racists pf this period.
It was OFFICIALLY renamed "White House" in 1901 but it was probably called the "White House" by ordinary people long before that. The song dates to 1898 with Quinn's recording a year later.
@@MCDreng According to the White House Historical Association, most people in the 19th century referred to the building as "the President's House" or as "the Executive Mansion." But I did a quick search for this highly unpleasant song, and as you indicated, it is indeed authentically from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Woah, are you telling me a U.S. President who was last in office 8 years ago is currently remembered more than a recording artist from 130 years ago? Wow how utterly shocking.
