- How To Install A Ford Transit Van Tow Bar & Camper Rear Step + New Rear Bumper | 009
In this Ford Transit Camper Van Conversion episode, I fit a towbar and a rear step to my Mark 7 Transit Minibus.
Here's what I used in this video:
Transit Mk7 Heavy Duty Towbar: ebay.us/aUio5a
Quality Stanley Rivet Gun: ebay.us/HYtxzC
Towbar Double Step: ebay.us/IGWFAb
Transit Mk7 Bumper Trim: ebay.us/jYwdIy
Although I don’t intend to do a lot of towing with my campervan it would be useful to have the ability to tow occasionally. Maybe hiring a car or motorcycle trailer if we need to use one would be a good idea. But mainly I thought it would be good to be able to mount a bike rack on it, and to include a step for easy access through the rear doors.
The rear trim which was a chequer plate had been dented by somebody reversing into a bollard or something so I replaced that at the same time. Changing this was a bigger challenge than fitting the towbar. I haven’t had a problem with pop rivets before but this time I went through 3 pop riveters, 2 bought new, failed while I was fitting it. Eventually I bought a Stanley pop riveter which was up to the job, although you’ll see in the video that I wasn’t sure if I was. Maybe I had bought the strongest 4.8mm rivets in the world.
The towbar fitted very easily. I noticed that the bolts that connect to the frame of the van would only go in one way, which was the opposite to the way they were shown in the exploded diagram in the instructions. I am sure that they will be fine, but it is annoying when instructions are not correct. Frequently they seem to have been translated through two or more languages, badly!! This isn’t the excuse here as it is a diagram.
The step meant that the electric hitch bracket had to be moved, but this wasn’t really a problem as there were plenty of bolts supplied.
Overall I am very pleased with how the fitting went, and I would recommend this type of towbar.

OK thanks for replying
No hay problema
I’m pretty sure that built goes in a different place,m there’s two captive nuts towards the back, when I fitted mine they had come out
Interesting, I will have take a look next time.
I have a 2011 ford transit 2.2 swb semi high top ,would this type of tow bar fit on it, Thanks
Yes, they add a bit in the middle to change the SWB to MWB. Unless you are looking for one second hand the supplier will confirm the right type.
Got a brand new, transit tourneo custom van.... Been quoted. £600/£750... Supplied and fitted...
I'm tempted to buy the gear, and fit it mysel
I would certainly do it myself, you can usually download the instructions from the towbar manufacturers website, to make sure you are happy that you can do it.
Hi mate do you have a video of connecting the wiring for electric towbar
Hi, I hope this helps. th-cam.com/video/aCf_TOxg6UY/w-d-xo.html Why not subscribe and see what else we have done.
Hi do you no the wiring connections for the towbar to the lights on the mk7 transit thanks
If you look on Transit forums you will find it seems that there are a number of different wiring colour schemes. Your best bet is to work out which colour goes to each bulb in the light fitting. It's how I did it. Good luck.
I went back to take a look for you. I may put this in a future video. The wiring for mine is
Right hand rear light cluster wiring
Red Foglight
Black/Green Earth
Purple/White Brake Light
Yellow/Grey Tail Light
Green/Orange R/H Indicator
Green/Brown Reverse Light
Left hand rear light cluster wires used
Blue/Brown Tail Light
Grey/Orange R/H Indicator
You will need to check if it is the same in yours.
Good luck
Could you make a video on how to wire it up
Hi Jodie, you need to scotch lock the wires to the ones which go to one of your rear light clusters, brake light to brake light etc. With one extra wire to the other rear light's indicator so that works too.
Its fairly straight forward and there's a couple of writeups online if you google it, hope that helps!
If I ever do it again I will be sure to cover it more clearly.
@@SPANNERRASH problem with scotch locks is you never know if they have broken the wire outer. Far better to cut into the original and use connectors
@@robingatward1075 I'm sure what you're describing would be superior, but I've been pretty lucky with scotch locks so far. I do hear people have used with them though so I'll keep an eye on it. I can always rectify it later.
What happened to the crash bar behind the bumper?
Not sure, that's how I found it!
It was like that when I found it!

Thanks for the flattering comments. I always aim to please :)
