I got a tow dolly for my camper and now I know I can just sell it. There’s no way I’d be comfortable doing all this as a mom - I can do lots of stuff but for sure this isn’t going to be one of them. Thank you for going through such details with clarity. It probably saved somebody’s life.
I’m a 61 year old woman and I can use the car dolly no problem. My husband is NO HELP when it comes to guiding me on or off the dolly due to some brain damage from a stroke so I have to get out and eyeball it myself. My car is a front wheel drive Prius and I tow it behind my RV. It has a low profile so I need to use blocks of wood as he describes. The hardest thing for me is loosening the ratchet.
Good information. I once towed a car with a manual transmission on a dolly. I left it in neutral, but my wife went behind me to double check everything and she put it in gear. The engine blew a few miles down the road. Dropping the drive line would have saved that car.
great video , i have looked at a bunch of videos because I am going to be towing a 71 firebird to a friends and he wants me to back it up in an alley into his garage and i thought that was a terrible idea but no video before yours covered backing them up , and a firebird is also a little wide for the tow dolly , so no backing up for me, and you saved me from damaging the tow dolly and the car , thank you
Just towed a Ford E250, backwards... sway sucked but managed 55 the whole 90 mile trip. Wish I watched this excellent video first! Now I know what to do next time! Nice job on the vid!
Even after using these tow dollies over a few decades, I learned several things from watching this video. Thanks Chris and Jen👍 (I’m assuming Jen did all the camera work 😄)
I know an old timer that owned a repair garage and wrecker service. He towed rear wheel drive cars backward all the time, for decades. This was before cars had lock steering. He would loop a piece of rope on the steering wheel pull it tight and close the car door on it. Then knot the rope so it couldn't pull back through. They would pull as straight as long as the steering wheel was straight with no wagging. Thanks for all the great tips on using this dolly.
Great video. Was looking for information As i nearly lost my load recently, most certainly learnt alot from your video. 1st point being i didnt lock the steering wheel with slider, 2nd point leaving slack before ratcheting down the straps to spool the straps up more. Basic mistakes but sometimes learn the hard way. Thanks from the UK
Excellent video and demonstrating the dues and don’ts. I tell a lot of trailers, but I’ve never had a tow dolly before for our motorhome and I was looking for a video just to show me anything that I might not know. You went through a lot of good stuff that’s good points. I agree with the person that mentioned I don’t know how anybody can get this video thumbs down because it’s a great video.
I tow my 1999 Tacoma pickup truck with rear wheel drive with my Motorhome . I have to tow it backwards due to it being an automatic transmission. One trip covered over 5000 miles out through the Northwest. I had no sway except from wind, but it migt have been from the Motorhome being pretty heavy. Several times I had to back up due to taking a wrong turn onto a dead end road. It wasn't easy but by working it back and forth I got it done. Also my tow dolly has surge brakes so they were a big help in the mountains.
Great video. My husband and I have one of these we pulled behind our RV. He would always pull the car up and I’d strap it down while he tied down the steering wheel. I lost my husband this April and realized I didn’t remember everything he did inside the vehicle while I strapped the tires. I couldn’t remember if he left it in neutral (automatic transmission). I figured you would have to, but honestly wasn’t sure.
Good info, it's important to lock the steering wheel as the dolly is designed with the slider to limit the amount of steering angle so that no damage occurs to the vehicle being towed. For dollies without a slider, you must unlock the steering. I think I rather the slider tho because once I was forced to tow a 5,500 pound truck backwards to the recycling center with a 5,000 pound truck. I got up to 50 mph and learned quickly about death wobble. Backed down to 20-30 mph MAX and I was ok. So if your forced to tow backwards, I'd say you definitely need the slider, but I still wouldn't recommend it like you said.
Very informative and useful video.I recently had to use a tow dolly like this to tow a 1998 GMC 1500 extended cab truck home.I had to use a 1991 Chevrolet S-10 to do this and it didn't have a receiver hitch. If this wasn't bad enough,I also had to load the GMC truck onto the tow dolly backwards because there wasn't a ring gear and pinion in the rear differential. It did fine until I turned into my driveway off of the main highway and then it almost came off! Finally got it back on and home.
Haha, sounds like a pretty sketchy ride! I've definitely had my fair share of experiences like that. Thanks for sharing! The first car I ever put on here was an old beat-up Porsche that I got for 300 bucks. I put it on backwards and didn't lock the steering. When I made a turn out onto the road, the front end of the car started riding in the opposite lane. LOL
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Wow!The steering column on that GMC 1500 didn't lock anymore,so I had to ratchet strap it straight. When I made the left hand turn into my driveway, the right wheel of the dolly went under the frame of the truck near the cab.
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Sunday, I had to haul an automatic 325ci with a rear-air-bagged Grand Cherokee. 400 miles SoCal to NorCal. I agree...this was the best video out there. answered a lot of my questions. I'm going to look at a 2014 tow master tomorrow to buy. I was going to rent a uhaul one but I can't be sure they will have one available when i need it.

I have towed with a tow dolly for 15 years. When I bought mine the guy told me do not back this TG back or you will bend the tongue. I went about ten years without backing it up. I got in a bind one time and had to back it up with a Ford Taurus only 5 feet. Yep it bent the tongue. I towed rear wheel drive cars by backing up on the dolly and pulling them backward. This might have been a no no but I had no trouble. They were big heavy vehicles too, Oldsmobiles and 1500 chevy trucks, Ford LTD. ETC. If you are going to tow a lot get a car haul trailer.
Thanks for the video, I have been using one for 4 years behind my rv and I picked up a few nuggets! One suggestion is when releasing the ratchet with a screwdriver position it a bit to the side. That ratchet is loaded up pretty good and can whack you when released. Ask me how I know.....
Great video. I’ve made decision to never use a tow dolly again because there are just too many things that have to be done just right for an amateur like me to use...know your limitations.
Glad to hear you found the video helpful Ray. Thank you for commenting. Yeah tow dollies are definitely hazardous. No doubt about that. Even if you know what you're doing
Great video, we just got a dolly and now we know how to use it! I was wondering why it was so hard to reverse with a dually and a Jeep on the dolly I was trying and trying again until I was able to reverse with the Jeep in a super tight spot and then completely in a tempo (A car tempo for winter) it was so unbelievably hard but now I know not to do it again haha thanks!
Dude you’re high speed!!! My straps kept coming off so I’m gonna try looping the strap through the ring twice and hopefully that will make a difference thanks
Yeah sometimes I go a little too fast that's for sure. Make sure you have at least three or more Revolutions of nylon webbing on the ratchets. What part of it is coming loose?
NoNonsenseKnowHow hey thanks for the reply! I think my Ford Explorers front tires has not been snug up against the front bumpstop of the dolly so the vehicle has too much play and is moving around and making the straps come loose every time! I tried doing the double loop through the metal ring and that seemed to help so now I think I need to perhaps make some custom pieces of 2X4 that I can place behind each tire to reduce the vehicle movement? Or try my other set of straps made by starrr products? Thanks
I've purchased one 7 months ago. Great dolly. Straps suck. IMHO one of the better dollies out there. I purchased a spare tire, safety chains for for added security to the car towed, and a different set of straps. Much easier to use. As far as lighting the 4 prong trailer connector takes care of that. As far as braking goes I got the one with surge brakes. Problem solved. Most states require supplemental braking if the towed vehicle or trailer is over 3K pounds. Not all but most. The surge brake dollies get around the electrical hook up requirements. So far I've towed my car 1K miles to and from Florida behind my bus with no issues. My father used one for over 20 years behind his motor homes with no issues. They are a good low cost option versus flat towing. You just have to find a place for them once you get to your campsite. Solved that problem by adding a small tow hitch to my towed vehicle. Thank you for your informative video. Much appreciated.

Yeah they definitely have a learning curve and take some getting used to to be efficient with. In either case they're still a pain in the butt. Flatbed tow is much safer. I sold mine because I prefer using my car trailer. Back when I was flipping junk cars though this thing made me a lot of money.
thanks that video sure did help. i have a tow dolly like this one. i rip off the under neath pulling up on it. i did not realize it would be to low. thanks for the tip on putting down under the ramp.
I'm glad you showed backing up and dolly turning. My question is dolly has no turning mechanisms I presume, and the front wheels have to angle somewhat since rear of mustang is trying align with front of dolly? It seems like there is some angling of front tires going on in a turn, but that can't happen if front steering wheel is locked. Are straps allowing some flex, thereby causing loosing after each turn?
Nice video, thanks. Bought a used one just like that one. Has 13" tires and wheels they are165/70/13. Ramps seem kinda low for not snagging ... wondering if I can put like 185/85/15 on without any worries. Fenders are beat up but thick, think I can modify them to mt needs, any other issue on that to worry about?
Here’s “you can not tow a rear wheel drive automatic” after I hauled a mustang car from CO to TX. I didn’t remove the drive shaft lmaooooo. Luckily this thing kept working!!!!
Good to hear you didn't have any trouble. I've done it plenty of times short distance. But I definitely wouldn't tell people to do it in the video because then I'll be hearing a lot of backlash when someone's transmission seized up
So we just got one of these. Our car is a front wheel drive and we are going to pull it behind a motor home. After we get the car on the dolly and strapped down then we take off the emergency brake but our question is do we leave it in park or put it in neutral?
Only question I have is you plugged in the lights for the car dolly, how do you then plug in the lights for the extended two lights? Do you need those if you use the car dolly lights? What's the law require?
Excellent question! You would need a 4 pin splitter adapter. I've plugged a link into the description to one on Amazon. They're about 10 bucks. I usually did local runs with mine and would just put the four ways on. The laws will vary state-to-state. But definitely a good idea either way to have lights on the back. Pretty sure you have to in most States. The dolly lights alone are not enough
Dennis Hunt awesome man! Thanks for checking it out and verifying that my instructions are accurate. I've been using and renting dollies for years. So I've seen a lot of what can go wrong.
It didn't say what gear to leave your vehicle in park or neutral? I'm referring to the one which will be towed on the tow dolly. I was in Calgary last night referring this tutorial worried about what gear to leave the 2015 Corolla in. I tested Park and I saw wheels moving freely so I thought that was ok. I suppose others with rear wheel drive might need a few more instructions. Good tutorial though. I successfully did this and towed my car 700kms with a Tundra.
A towing service tech said it is against federal legislation to use a seat belt to lock the steering wheel. Any experts out there to verify this? Otherwise good instruction and info.
On these videos nobody seems to understand that you can tow a rear wheel drive vehicle if you back it on. I’ve seen it done no problem, the front wheels freewheel. Just make sure the steering lock is engaged and just to be sure use the seatbelt to ensure that the steering wheel doesn’t turn.
yes. Unless it's a four-wheel drive with manual transfer case. Then you can put the transfer case in neutral. I touched on this subject in the description after posting the video
Good video. Quick question! I noticed as you backed up sideways the car move a little out of the trailer. And it was only a light move. Are the doors or panel liable to get damage on a sharp turn. I have a 23ft tioga rv , and im trying to trailer my 75 k5 blazer 250 miles round trip 500 miles total to Pismo Beach Ca. Would it be a problem or can if transport the weight capacity with out issues. ?
Was wondering if its ok to just keep vehicle running in neutral with auto trans rear wheel drive, and not remove driveshaft.Trans should be getting lubed right?
Glad to help out! And thank you for your comment. If you're going local you can tow it backwards as long as you lock the steering. But I wouldn't go on the freeway
Would it matter how u tow a rear wheel drive car (front/backwards) if it's just a shell? No engine, just a shell with everything else. Thank u in advance! And great video!
I suppose it would be better if it was just a shell. But honestly I've never done it so I couldn't tell you for sure. It also really depends on if the front end has any slop in it. Best thing he's just try it and see how it feels. Stick to the back roads if it doesn't feel good
I tow full-size pickups backwards and have never had a problem. I do it that way just to save time by not having to drop the driveshaft. Lock the steering wheel. I only do backwards around town, 10-20 miles or less; if I'm going further I tow facing forward and remove the driveshaft. I drive 50 mph or less when towing backwards.
Great video, first rate , no nonsense, straight to the point and without annoying background music.
Thanks, and I appreciate the feedback

Kyle Randall no problem! And I'm glad you found it helpful!

Why cross the chains ?
Thanks so much I just traded a 4x4 for one of these.
Just like your other comments, very good explanation .
Oh Wow… Beautiful Video… You should Do it in Spanish- and if you can Doit on all languages.. thank you😊
I'm glad you showed backing up and dolly turning.
The Dolly deck has a pivot. Yes the straps give a little bit also and can loosen up after it turns.
Awesomeness
Outstanding video - thanks - very informative and thorough.
No problem, thanks for your comment
Nice video, thanks. Bought a used one just like that one. Has 13" tires and wheels they are165/70/13. Ramps seem kinda low for not snagging ... wondering if I can put like 185/85/15 on without any worries. Fenders are beat up but thick, think I can modify them to mt needs, any other issue on that to worry about?
Very helpful video, thanks for your effort. Kazakhstan 🇰🇿
Excellent instructions
Great video, Excellent tutorial. Thank You.
No problem, happy to hear it helped out. Thanks
Thanks Dude, great job explaining everything.
My uncle recommended I get one to have just in case and I'm like I don't even know how to use one hahaha So thanks for tutorial
👍👍👍
Here’s “you can not tow a rear wheel drive automatic” after I hauled a mustang car from CO to TX. I didn’t remove the drive shaft lmaooooo. Luckily this thing kept working!!!!
Good to hear you didn't have any trouble. I've done it plenty of times short distance. But I definitely wouldn't tell people to do it in the video because then I'll be hearing a lot of backlash when someone's transmission seized up
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow no doubt!! I got very lucky!
I do it all the time as long as your transmission is in neutral your fine.
Excellent explanation!
Thanks Brian, Splendid to hear you found it helpful
So we just got one of these. Our car is a front wheel drive and we are going to pull it behind a motor home. After we get the car on the dolly and strapped down then we take off the emergency brake but our question is do we leave it in park or put it in neutral?
Good to know in case I ever use one. God bless America
HELL YEAH, BURN OUT ONTO THE DOLLY!
Im buying a dolly tomorrow and u bet ur bottom dollar im gonna try it
Awesome. Good luck with it!
The dolly lights alone are not enough
great step by step tutorial!!! your a natural!!!
Thanks fabulous
I already knew everything on the video, just watched it to be sure you knew it..!!! LOL..!! Great job, to the point, detailed and spot on..!! :)
The vehicle being towedon dolly?
@@NoNonsenseKnowHowWas referring to car being towed. I didn't know that "Park" only locks the wheels which are powered.
A towing service tech said it is against federal legislation to use a seat belt to lock the steering wheel. Any experts out there to verify this? Otherwise good instruction and info.
Very thorough and helpful!! Thanks
Thanks for the feedback Jerrie
On these videos nobody seems to understand that you can tow a rear wheel drive vehicle if you back it on. I’ve seen it done no problem, the front wheels freewheel. Just make sure the steering lock is engaged and just to be sure use the seatbelt to ensure that the steering wheel doesn’t turn.
Excellent walk through.
No problem!
I was told not to tow rear wheel drive on this type of dolly as it can damage transmission
Great Job .. Thanks for the Great Info on Tow Dolly
Was wondering if its ok to just keep vehicle running in neutral with auto trans rear wheel drive, and not remove driveshaft.Trans should be getting lubed right?
Want ever need one but good class anyway
excellent! Thank you! I was going to tow my Grand Marquis backwards, but now I wont consider it...I'll get someone to drive it.
Glad to help out! And thank you for your comment. If you're going local you can tow it backwards as long as you lock the steering. But I wouldn't go on the freeway
Well Done, very clear narrative!
Great Video...I learned a lot! THANKS!
Life saver!!! Thanks!!
Very helpful man thank you. And nice second gen by the way.
Great to hear that It was helpful. And thanks
I would not wrap as you say the safety chain around the axle! only the frame is safe, LCA maybe
