Fun Stuff! I like the minis but only have an 870 and a 320 that does OK with them! There is a NEW kit out for mossbergs comes with an adapter, follower and a lifter that converts it into a 590s set up so you can run mins and regular shells without removing the adapter, defender tactical makes it! Might be a cool upgrade it looks like! Have a nice Memorial Weekend! Be well! 👍
I can run them in my 870 pretty reliably. Just not as fast as a standard 2 3/4. You have to be deliberate about your stroke. But hey 10 shots vs six, deliberate is faster than reloading.
Mossberg just introduced the 590S that doesn't need the adaptor and you can mix and match the ammo anyway you'd like. But my kel-tec KSG has always run the mini shells in any combination you want. It will even cycle it upside down.
Thanks for the very useful information. When I first saw those short shells, I thought about the increased magazine capacity, but I also suspected they wouldn't feed.
For anyone who currently own a Mossberg 88/500/590 type shotgun, look into the Defender Tactical Mini Pro Lifter kit. You basically can convert your Mossberg pump shotgun to function like a 590S for a fraction of the cost of buying a 590S.
I tried two of the Defender adapters and both would jam if I pointed the shotgun straight up or down. My OPSOL 2.0 didn't have this problem. The Defenders are also made in China.
@@JohnB-dr8sk John, that is correct. When you run the defender in odd positions, the minis will do all sorts of things. I did a fair amount of testing in different orientations, with both the 590 S and the defender. The S does a better job, but still, does not take up the extra space like the OPSol does. Basically, after using and recommending our product for years, Mossberg took a crack at it. NOT the same concept. The China part is news to me. The OPSol is made just north of Fort Worth, Texas.
@@JohnB-dr8sk What I like about the Defender Tactical adapter is it's versatility. I wanted my shotgun to be able to run standard shotgun shells reliably while simultaneously being able to cycle minishells. It sounds like if I wanted a shotgun for use exclusively with minishells, the Opsol adapter would be the way to go.
@@JohnB-dr8sk the shotgun I have the Defender adapter installed in is for competition use primarily. If what you mean by "tactical position" is any extreme angle from horizontal, then the Defender Tactical adapter actually helps when using standard sized shells. I've noticed in my own use that the finger on the adapter will actually hold standard shells in place better at odd angles vs no adapter. It even kinda helps when the ejector port is pointed straight down if I'm quick enough to cycle the action. Everything has it's pros and cons and, to me, the Defender Tactical adapter is more useful than the Opsol.
*Pssssst,...........You need to look into a KSG-12.* *Holds 22 minis, + 1 3"or whatever you want in the pipe.* *Most reliable short shell shooting SG there is.* *KSG-25 holds 41 shells!*
You should do a video with the Defender Tactical lifter for the Mossberg. It lets you shoot mini, standard, or magnum rounds without needing to take the adapter in and out like the Opsol.
Mixup, you are awesome, sir! I love the fact that you addressed your fans writing to you, most channels don't bother. Been a sub for several years. Thanks for the great content!
You are certainly very welcome and thank you for subscribing to my channel. My son and I also thank you for watching our videos and we appreciate the nice comment.
I bought adapters for my son and a friend from Midway. Neither have told me they tried them in their shotguns. I bought a Mossberg 950S. I can load six 2-3/4” or 10 mini shells in the tube. It cycles fine. Best part is you can mix mini, 2-3/4” and 3” in the same tube and it cycles. But the three inch are brutal on the shoulder. Thanks for the video.
Question that I think you will answer: Would you sell me that Mossberg 500 for $200. No, no, wait. Because I like you, I'll go $250. We're friends. $250. Good shooting, and thanks again for taking us along. As soon as I saw this video I forwarded it to my buddy who has a Mav 88 and an adaptor and he likes the Mini Shells!
Bought one of the Mossberg 590s 20" that comes from the factory for all shells from 1 3/4" to 3" and it works flawlessly with all the shells I've tried. Went down the rabbit hole in reloading of the short shells. I have settled on 2" hull length for it allows for a full payload (21 or 27 pellet #4 buck, 9 or 12 pellet #1 buck or 9 pellet OO) and functions in the 590s, 1300 Defender, Fabarm FP6, Rem 870 and even cycles in the Beretta 1201fp auto. I think the 2" is just long enough to stop the shell from flipping and inverting in the action of the shotgun. Another great video, keep it up.
I went to a gun store looking for some mini shells and I mentioned to the guy at the gun store they don't cycle in or Remington 870 the crazy guy he went and loaded up a brand new 870 and cycled the shells through it with no problem I thought the guy was nuts because he was doing it with live ammo
Great video! I am a Mini-shell fan for several reasons. Now I know why they only make an adapter for Mossbergs. Fortunately, all of my shotguns are Mossbergs! 😊
My Mossberg 590A1 cycles them fine with the Defender Tactical adapter. It allows mixing all length shells in the gun. They also have a modified lifter for it. My stock Winchester 1300 cycles them no problem.
*KSG-12 blows it away in capacity, ergonomics, and versatility.* *All the moderately old fashioned shotguns crack me up, although I do love an antique coach gun. (for nostalgic fun)* *I seriously have no need for my modded 870, except to let my grandkids shoot their 1st SG.*
Thank you for your video's and the hard work it takes in making them 🙂 In Canada an airgun is classified as a firearm if it exceeds 500 FPS and you need a firearms license to by one👈🤔👉?
It sure seems silly that a firearms license is required for an airgun. You're right, it is a lot of work to make these videos but I love doing it and I hope to keep making them for many more years.
Mossberg now makes the 590S, which is specifically designed to handle the mini-shells without need of an adapter. It can still fire regular shells, too.
I am very impressed with my stevens savage 320. It uses short shells of all variety just fine. It also has less recoil than other shotguns I've tried. The Remington tears a little more into my shoulder with the magnum shell than my 320. To be honest, I have upgraded the spring and follower as well as polish internal parts for smoother cycling.
I have a Stevens 320 shotgun and I did a review where I tested Aguila mini shells through it. It wasn't 100% reliable but it was much more reliable than the Remington 870 shotgun. The upgraded parts in your shotgun, plus the polishing, seems to have made a big difference. Thanks for the great comment.
Love this video. Wondered how those would act in a pump shitgun. They would be interesting for single shot too. I have to agree that's a perfectly good excuse for what to do with a can of hominy! Mom always made me try to eat that stuff when I was growing up and oh boy do I hate it. LOL 🤣. Thank you for keeping us all smiling.
Good morning Richard. I've never actually tasted hominy. My wife has and she absolutely refuses to have it in her kitchen. She is the boss in the kitchen and I don't argue with her 😁
As always good video young man! That's pretty cool I've never tried those. I have a mossburg 500 mine holds 7 in mag 1 in chamber I love it. My cousin passed away several years ago I bought it from his son has sentimental values most of all it one of the family. Thanks for sharing be safe have fun
I have an 870 police magnum getting the shorty shells to cycle is a learning curve. It can be done without much issue if you spend time practicing your stroke. You have to be deliberate about it and you cant speed through them. Its inconvenient but then again with a long tube like I have on mine you can fit a 2 3/4 inch shell and 7 shorty shells in the tube, being deliberate is still faster than reloading lol. The shorty slugs are impressively fast for being so small.
The better option for any Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun is the Universal Minishell Adapter from Defender Tactical, as once installed it will cycle both standard 2 3/4 and Minishells (even mixed together) without having to remove the adapter. Plus the way it is designed, it will not fall out.
Here at OPSol, we have spent a lot of time on getting an 870 to run minishells. Here is the reality.... 1. The lifter has to be modified to stop the early drop. We have done this. 2. An opening has to be created in the lifter to insert an adapter. And yes, the adapter shape is unique to the 870, but doable. We have made 3d models of both the new lifter, and an adapter. We have reached out to the new Remington company to discuss, but have not heard back. So, to get an 870 to FEED minishells requires a new, modified lifter and an adapter. Installing the new lifter is not hard. But the problem, as Sir Mixup98 shows in this video, is an 870 not only feeds a shell differently than a Mossberg, it also EJECTS the shell differently. And, unlike the Mossberg ejector, which is screwed in, the 870 is riveted. So while we have bent an ejector (while still riveted in) to work, a newly design ejector means drilling out the old one, etc. Doable, but is it worth it? We don't know.
*Grab yourself a KSG-12, and put your 870 to rest, I did.* *My modded R870 is for letting the grandkids shoot a shotgun, it's worthless to me otherwise since I got my KSG.* 👍
@@tropocal2343 see my reply on your other comment. And the same for the KS7. The very first time I racked one (a friend brought it by to show), it flipped the mini.

@@tropocal2343 I understand. Look, we started all this with minishells in 2013. I bought a KSG at some point to test, and yes, almost always, it worked fine....until you start racking hard, vertically, etc. Without boring you with all the testing I have done, there are 2 things to consider. 1. The basic geometry of a receiver "opening" is 3" long by about 2" tall. A minishell is 1.6" long. So, if you are working the gun hard, at odd angle, etc, minishells can and will flip in any shotgun. 2. I am not a gun expert, but I am unaware of any firearm that is designed with that much "slop" in the feeding cycle. Mossberg, after pushing our product, decided to try to make the "run all shells" shotgun, the 590S. They couldn't take our design, so they just put a piece of rubber at the back of the receiver to make minishells less "jumpy". A 2.75" shotshell needs a 2.75" (3") receiver. A 1.6" mini needs a 1.6" receiver. If ONLY minishells existed in the world, the receiver would have been designed at 1.6" in length.
My dad bought the Mossberg 500 combo back in 1960. He was a deputy sheriff from 1964-1989 and earlier in his career he carried it in his patrol car in a vertical rack beside him. I found the short barrel like you have on yours and it has some rust on it. Probably got wet when he got out of the car and it was windy and raining and he did not notice that. I know somebody with some stuff that will remove it. That 500 with alternating double ought and slugs in shorty shells would probably be a great home defense long arm with the 18 inch barrel.
Yeah, that's one thing I like about my Mossberg 590A1 over my Remington 870 Tactical. It's a little easier to load as the elevator tucks under the bolt. I haven't bought any mini shells yet but it seems like a fun option plus I'm guessing they're plenty effective against an unarmored intruder.
Thanks for the video! I'm curious, but It seems like more of a novelty thing to me. Only thing I can think of is being able to load a few more into the magazine. Otherwise the standard 23/4" shells generally have more lead to send downrange and are about half that price for a 25 round box. I usually pay about $34 for a 100 count case of $7.5 or #8 shells. I guess they might be pretty neat to play with but not economical to shoot regularly.
In the spirit of buying the rounds before you have the implement to use them in...adding the Maverick 88 to an already sufficient shotgun collection (almost 2 years after the purchase of the shells) was one of my "proudest" moments, both for the price, and this very use- *dedicated* to shorties by the OPSol, but with the option of foregoing it for "normal" purposes!
Thanks! Informative and enlightening, Iam a 870 guy but you have given me a reason to buy a mossberg. P.S. thanks for showing the 75yd shots ,a vain man would not have.
Some of the channels that got into the testing & detailed ballistics of the 12g short shells gave them very high marks as defense rounds used within reasonable distances. Especially in situations where overpenetration was a factor.

You give us great hope for the American gun owners
Maybe I will run for president in four years 👍😎
Thanks for the very useful information.
@@z5m1k3 Use it at your own risk my friend. It will jam if held in a tactical position. I would thoroughly test before relying on it. Just my 2 cents
Very good explanation on why those shorty shells won't work except in a side by side or over and under shotgun.
*Pssssst,...........You need to look into a KSG-12.*
*Holds 22 minis, + 1 3"or whatever you want in the pipe.*
*Most reliable short shell shooting SG there is.*
*KSG-25 holds 41 shells!*
You should do a video with the Defender Tactical lifter for the Mossberg. It lets you shoot mini, standard, or magnum rounds without needing to take the adapter in and out like the Opsol.
I hope to review the Defender Tactical lifter sometime in the future.
First, thanks for emphasizing clean-up! 👍
Second, I wish I'd bought a Mossberg instead of an 870! Those mini shells are home-defense perfection.
*Now get a KSG-12 and have the best.*
I love running mini shells in my Mossberg with the adapter. Thanks for another entertaining video Mixup!
You're welcome and thank you for always watching our videos.
*(KSG-12 holds 22+1, KSG-25 holds 42+1, and shoots minis more reliably than any other SG)*
Keep the great work. Really like your content.
Mossy now makes the 500S. It is factory made to use the mini shells and the regular shells
The war on hominy continues LOL
Or hominity lol
Hominy, hominy, hominy, hominy...

You are very welcome William!
Brilliant video I'm a lefty in the UK but I love your channel
That shot on that white hominy can might have been one of the coolest I’ve seen on your channel!
That was pretty cool 👍😎👌
I've been a fan of your videos for quite some time. This one had good info and I appreciate it, keep em coming.
Thanks, will do!
That hominy can launched into low orbit. Those shorty's are still better than most pistol calibers.
Informative and useful video. Thankyou.
You are welcome and thank you for watching my video.
Excellent no nonsense video explaining about mini shells and pump actions, fun to watch too...👍
If you cannot get the 870 to work those no one can. You are the man.
Thank you for another awesome video Brother ~John
I went to a gun store looking for some mini shells and I mentioned to the guy at the gun store they don't cycle in or Remington 870 the crazy guy he went and loaded up a brand new 870 and cycled the shells through it with no problem I thought the guy was nuts because he was doing it with live ammo
Very good video. Thanks for sharing. I need to find an adapter for my 590A1 and some buckshot
Thanks for the tip on the mini shell adapter. Ordered a pair for my Maverick 88. All the best! "The JJ" SW Penna.
Ideal ammo in countries where the majority of people are small
Yep, for Holland you need 10 ga
Work great in my Maverick 88 with adapter . 👍🇺🇸
Agreed. I use them with the defender tactical adapter kit, and feed like a champ in my M88, and shockwave. They still pack a recoil push.
Sweet. I just ordered the adapter.
I really enjoy watching your shotgun videos it looks like you are having a great time out there. Keep your powder dry.
Thanks for the 500 accessory video.
Great video! I am a Mini-shell fan for several reasons. Now I know why they only make an adapter for Mossbergs. Fortunately, all of my shotguns are Mossbergs! 😊
I'm also a fan and I've been shooting Mossberg shotguns for over 50 years! Thank you for the compliment.
My Mossberg 590A1 cycles them fine with the Defender Tactical adapter. It allows mixing all length shells in the gun. They also have a modified lifter for it. My stock Winchester 1300 cycles them no problem.
Mossberg makes a superior gun in my humble opinion.
They certainly do nowadays. Older remington 870's are truely something to behold. That said, newer 870's are not
*KSG-12 blows it away in capacity, ergonomics, and versatility.*
*All the moderately old fashioned shotguns crack me up, although I do love an antique coach gun. (for nostalgic fun)*
*I seriously have no need for my modded 870, except to let my grandkids shoot their 1st SG.*
Interesting, I did a very similar thing at a very similar time. I was skeptical until I ran that adapter but I think the Mossberg is all figured out
I am very impressed with my stevens savage 320.
@@mixup98 lol. Yes, I know! It was your video of the 320 that prompted me to buy it!
Thanks for the review.
My pleasure!
I do love those mini shells, and I'm Team Mossberg all day long! Great video as always!
Thanx for the in-depth tutorial !! 💥
My pleasure!
She is the boss in the kitchen and I don't argue with her 😁
Certainly no apologies needed Sir… AWESOME video. Hope you and yours had a great Memorial Day weekend……. And a HELLUVA good nap 🍻💯‼️🔥👍🏻
We did have a great Memorial Day weekend and we hope you did too. And yes, it was a very good nap 👍😁
As always good video young man! That's pretty cool I've never tried those. I have a mossburg 500 mine holds 7 in mag 1 in chamber I love it. My cousin passed away several years ago I bought it from his son has sentimental values most of all it one of the family. Thanks for sharing be safe have fun
I'm sorry to hear about your cousin but I'm glad that his shotgun has stayed in the family. You also be safe my friend.
When I hear you say, "Let's blow something up," I know we're about to have some fun. I love my daily naps too.
👍😁
I have an 870 police magnum getting the shorty shells to cycle is a learning curve.
It can be done without much issue if you spend time practicing your stroke.
You have to be deliberate about it and you cant speed through them.
Its inconvenient but then again with a long tube like I have on mine you can fit a 2 3/4 inch shell and 7 shorty shells in the tube, being deliberate is still faster than reloading lol.
The shorty slugs are impressively fast for being so small.
Thank you sir! I've been wanting one of those adapters for my Maverick 88, but didn't know who made them. I just ordered me one!
Glad I could help....👍😎
Pretty cool outro. 👌🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the feedback. Maybe I will use it more often.
Love the mini shells and the adapter.
Those beans went into orbit, great video
Well I still don't rely on the adapter, maybe range day but mostly use mini on my single shot midway backpack! Thanks and take care.
*Grab yourself a KSG-12, and put your 870 to rest, I did.*
*My modded R870 is for letting the grandkids shoot a shotgun, it's worthless to me otherwise since I got my KSG.* 👍
@@tropocal2343 see my reply on your other comment. And the same for the KS7. The very first time I racked one (a friend brought it by to show), it flipped the mini.
@@guillermomaguire5394 *I don't know anything about the KS7, except I feel it was a step backwards for Kel-Tec's in innovative dynamics, but I'll fool around with my KSG-12 to see if I can get it to do what you're talking about.*
*I haven't seen or heard of anything like that happening to the KSG 12, or 25, and don't know of a SG that is more reliable shooting 1-3/4 shells.*
@@guillermomaguire5394 *So, I can not for the life of me, find a KSG mini shell fail on the net, or get mine to do what you said during dry fire.*
*I guess when one messes with something long enough, without proficiency, or maybe not adhering to the manufacturers manual of operation, things could go wrong?...Or maybe your friend's just a "Charlie Brown", "the lucky one", and ended up with a lump of coal.*
I always enjoy your videos. Very informative.
The Opsol adapter works flawlessly in my Mav 88 eight shot security.
No worries, do what you can
Apparently Mini Shells do cycle perfectly in the Winchester model 1200 and 1300 shotguns. If you can get your hands on either I would try those.
I will try to get my hands on a Winchester shotgun and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion.
You are having fun, and I am learning a few things about mini shells. Going to get my pump shotgun and check it out for mini use ? Thanks 🤠👍
You are welcome my friend and yes, I did have a lot of fun making this video. 😁👌
Some of the channels that got into the testing & detailed ballistics of the 12g short shells gave them very high marks as defense rounds used within reasonable distances. Especially in situations where overpenetration was a factor.
Love shortys in my American Tactical Nomad. I wish there was a less expensive version of them.
