- This video showcases the end of my 2 year history with this challenge, with the question being: How Many Jumps Does it Take to Beat Super Mario Galaxy.
FYI: MOST of the tricks in this video were found by the wonderful members of the SMG ABC Team, this score would not have been possible without them. You can find their discord here: / discord
Additionally, there's a playlist with some stars apart of the "A button challenge" which is very similar to this jumpless challenge. Some of the strats in these videos are absolutely wild • Super Mario Galaxy A B...

Super Mario Galaxy Jumpless: Revisited / Can You Beat Super Mario Galaxy Without Jumping?
I hope you enojyed this remake of an older video I made. This score is so much lower than I originally had it thanks to all the help I've gotten from TASers.
I'm linking the playlist here if you'd like to see some of their work.

@@Ansel_G loved getting my childhood game being torn apart like this. Fr it was really great, kudos!
Hey I think I know how to save a jump when getting the star from megaleg. On the platform with him, there's a seam you can walk over that for two frames puts Luigi midair... It just might work!
Ok
How is this even a challenge? I never need to jump when I play Mario Galaxy. Most people play the game while sitting in a chair, not jumping at all. smh my head
I never thought about it that way, you're so right!
My cousin no-joke jumps a lot when playing games lmao, he could NOT beat this challenge
He means Mario jumping in the game. I get your joke though
@@desktop-ini 🤓
@@cherricake1796 is that really not common knowledge? Geez.
I have to say "mindlessly struggling to get off a lilypad magically makes it levitate solving all of our problems" is not something I expected from this
anything can happen in this game apparently.
A very Amazing little Bug i Wonder anyone found so far :D
Time for a new episode of "Core game mechanic? Forget about it."
not only that, but the return of that mechanic being left out
"What do you mean core mechanic? I can count the number of times I did that in my playthrough. This mechanic you didn't even intend is way more vital to the game"
"We're going to have to reach out to the realest person I know for the final star of the challenge; Luigi" was golden, that was too funny
Also, I just finished the video and I have to say, this is history right here. Cutting off 51 jumps and finishing Mario Galaxy in only 4 JUMPS is an absolute W, you should be proud my man
21:39 "Not that difficult but very very easy to mess up."
I think that's the definition of difficult...
“the game starts with Mario running around and jumping in a cutscene… this… doesn’t count. i didn’t tell him to do that” lol why did i get such a good kick out of that?
"pressing down the A button" man that's just half an A press
an a press is an a press. You can't say its only a half.
@@HarryLLC hes referencing bismuth's a button challenge video
@@msgkhntr so was I.
Well, Pannenkoek's technically
@@HarryLLC Well TJ "Henry" Yoshi, hear me out. An A press actually has three parts to it. When A is pressed, when A is held, and when A is released. And together, this forms one complete A press. Now, usually, it's the pressing that's useful. Because that's the only part that makes Mario jump. However, sometimes it's sufficient to just use the holding part, which allows Mario to do little kicks, to swim in water, to fall slowly while twirling, and to fall slowly with the wing cap. And as for the release, well, there's currently no cases where that's useful or important, so don't worry about that part. Now, if we map out the required A presses for Wing Mario Over The Rainbow, it would look like this. We merely need to hold A to reach the canon platform, we need to press A to launch from the first canon, and we need to press A again to launch from the second canon. So, how many A presses is that total? Well, it appears to be three, and if we were doing this star in isolation, then yeah, it would be three. But, in a full game A button challenge run, there are other A presses that occur earlier in the run, such as this A press needed to get into the course. So, if we take that A press into consideration as well, then how many A presses would it take? The naive answer would be four. One to enter the course and the three within the course that we established earlier. However, we can do better. We can actually do it in three by simply holding out the first A press to be used for the half A press. Because the half A press only required A to be held, not actually pressed. So in this fashion, Wing Mario Over The Rainbow only adds on an additional two A presses to the run since the first A press just leeches off of a previous A press. So, to capture this phenomenon, we call it 2.5x A presses.
Anyone who says "ThE rUn IsN't LeGiT hE uSeD SaVeStAteS!!1!" Is stupid. You try it without savestates. ❤ Love the video!
I'm only human 😭
It's just tool assisted which is fine
The lilypad bug was so perfect it's almost unbelievable.
it's a really odd trick. you could also alternatively use a flipbug to get out of the lilypad using starbits.
i it also happens in smb64 in a lava stage by just idling and idk it not as uncommon as it might seem
@@lr0dl012 Yeah its on the wii vc version of bowers in the fire sea its how sm64 was actually beatenwith the a button for the first time idk what their name is though
@@Randomusers6nu8lm I dunno man, I feel like I've beaten SM64 with the A button before
@@sirpuffin08 i meant without lol
It's wild to me that half of the jumps are just for collecting grand stars and the other half are not just in the SAME level, but ALSO in the FINAL level, and not even for collecting the grand star
Super Mario Galaxy, but mario sprains his ankle on 1:59, and so he improvises
... by calling Luigi to replace him
30:14 doing that to the poor innocent goomba should be illegal 💀
Loved the video it was impressing from the start until the end
@@ibass43 I was just evicting him from his home
It was so unnecessary, but hey, if it keeps the jump count at 0, it keeps the jump count at 0.

@@randomguy_197 he was in the way..
Is it murder if they just respawn
the goomba trick at 30:14 is so genuinely impressive. i don’t know how you come up with fixes like that- it’s insane. great video, man
@@rili424 I got a ton of help from TASers, I don’t know how they come up with some of the stuff
I like watching the video remakes because I honestly forget at least 90% of exactly what happens in the originals between the release of the 2 videos
The lillypad really gives "Bowser in the firesea skip in Mario 64 wii version where you wait 3 days for a plateform to slowly rise due to a wrongly rounded float just to skip a jump" energy
@@LeBazarDeFusette it reminds me of the botched animation in the low% run of twilight princess where you just wait while link stares at a rupee for 16 hours.
Here are some random thoughts I had while watching:
10:16 Bro casually improves the Minimum Starbits run while doing a completely different challenge entirely. Now that's dedication!
11:55 This really reminds me of that platform glitch in SM64 in Bowser in the Fire Sea, that allows you to Any% the game with 0 A presses. IDK, the reason why it happens might be the same.
32:30 The influence of Evil Ansel G in this video is too strong, we must temper him (unrelated: this is actually really similar to an edit I have in a video I'm working on lmao. Of course, yours looks way more professional :P)
But yeah, congrats on reducing the jump total by 92.7%!
the lilypad trick is kind of similar to that
Perhaps the lilypad's animation for being hit is being interrupted before it completes, raising it slightly everytime you spin. Kinda like the Minimum Percent Twilight Princess speedrun, where you stare at a Blue Ruppee for five hours.
if yall can knock off 51 jumps i think yall can find a way for the last 4. never give up never surrender
i heard someone say something in a mario maker video earlier that i think applies to all of these kinds of challenges. "you only lose when you give up." the current best known minimum jump count may be 4, but that's only for this moment in history. the amount of times i've seen people say (and personally tell people) that something is impossible, only to see it be completed is too much to not think human will can ultimately reach it's goal no matter what.
@@erierierierierie Given that we can just walk off a crystal and suddenly gain height, I'm sure that there's *something* we can discover for the final jumps

19:19 it’s because you are “standing” on the crystal, so you get a grounded spin. You break the crystal, and are then in the air, and haven’t used your airborne spin yet, so you can spin “again” :)
Also, I do want to note two things. One, at least on the Wii version, you can also use the B button on pull stars. And I’m pretty sure it still works on 3D all stars. And two, there is actually one difference between the Wii and 3d all stars version that I know of. It’s impossible to zoom your view in cannons on 3d all stars, because they forgot to re-do the controls for it.
that makes more sense
B button only works in galaxy 2, I think I tested it in 3DA just to make sure
@@Ansel_G oh okay. I forgot that was a galaxy 2 only thing. Really weird that they must’ve intentionally added it into the sequel, but didn’t even make the cursor update it’s graphics when using B.

Honestly this might be mu favourite galaxy challenge video I've seen
The most anticipated video of the year, lets go.
I havent watched the vid yet, but I'm sure it's going to be amazing just based on the beginning.
Edit: Watched the vid, the editing is so good, definitely gives me persona 3 vibes, but that's not out of the ordinary, hope to see more vids like this :)
The editing and quality of the video is amazing, not to mention the challenge is impeccable and your solutions very creative. Really nice job!
Absolutely ecstatic that TH-cam brought me to the sequel I didn’t even think was possible
This is my favorite game of all time, And something I thought I’ve seen everything for. I learned many new things today, And I am once again reminded that this is the reason I fell in love with this game. The more I played, The more skips I found, Skips that didn’t save time or were easy, But just… there. This video perfectly encapsulates that essence of the game
Great vid, I love the effort you put into some parts over 1 singular jump 😂

this dude somehow did scuttlebug raising in Mario Galaxy, do A button challenge next omg
I dont know exactly, but i think on the switch version you can just use the touchscreen to use a pull star without jumping
you're right, I show this later on in the video
@@Ansel_G My bad
Nice opening hook to the video. Got me in
From what I can tell, that weird slide-spin you used to get height in mostly flat areas is likely doing this:
Collision and state jank. There's usually a slight difference in hitboxes and character controllers. One of these is likely responsible for setting the grounded state for jumps, and the other for movement. So, while this normally works as expected, if you match the point right in between the grounded state where the spin jump height-gain is reset but haven't yet lost your air movement you get to keep the backwards-momentum speed + get bonus height from a spin that normally shouldn't work!
I'd love if anyone has more details on it, because this is totally a guess just based on my experience and observation.
I love how creative a lot of these methods are, especially the flip bug one.
@@squidnugget6570 the TASers are to thank for most of these, they are incredible

Genuinely such an amazing video. I love seeing stuff like this and can’t wait to see what you have in the future :)
i usually never watch long videos like this, but i was genuinely curious on how you beat a whole Mario game without jumping
That one astrogoomba is a legend
@@shopnil4 his sacrifice won’t be forgotten
13:33 the game only lets you walk up steep slopes for a bit before putting you in a sliding state. spinning restarts that time by interrupting the walking animation.
About your interrogation about floating, if I remember correctly, the effect stays while the crystal is on screen.
it can work while it's offscreen
The entire concept of shorejumping just inspired me to get back into my Unity project lol. Congratulations!!

Great video. I haven't watched it yet but I aready know.
I remember a little trick from a video I watched a long time ago... You can spin with either controller, but one controller will spin you higher than the other. For Mario, that's the right controller, but for Luigi, it's the left controller.
I may be totally misremembering this, but I think it might help.
@@ianemerson2704 you’re right, I did use that during this challenge
I dont think you should be able to use luigi unless you specifically mark this as a luigi run, because you DEFINITELY need to jump to unlock him, and using a file already played on outside of the challenge is against the spirit of any challenge run
@@Gear_Storm I asked my viewers a few months ago about this and they said to use Luigi. I did do this run with Mario already but I do think you’re right and I should mark this as a Luigi run.

I’d argue that simply moving around as spring Mario shouldn’t count as a jump provided you aren’t using the jump button to bounce even higher.
