Summer-glorious summer!
Time to dig in the sand, gulp from the hose, play at the park, and leap with joy! Unless you’re a kid-in which case, find yourself a comfy sofa in a dark, quiet room and settle in.
This is the season your parents are bombarded with the kind of warnings previously associated with incoming torpedoes.
The basic message: Don’t have fun-it’s too dangerous.
“Remember when digging in the sand at the beach was a fun activity for young children?” asks the website KidsTravelDoc. “Sorry. No more. Based on recent findings, only with lots of do’s and don’ts is frolicking in the sand a healthy activity.”
The blog’s author, Karl Neumann of the American Academy of Pediatrics, lays out his own don’ts: “Studies show that children playing in the sand are more likely to become ill than children merely walking on it. And the risk of illness increases with digging in the sand, being ‘buried’ in it, and digging in wet sand.”
Got it. Keep your kids on dry sand. No, wait-“Dry sand presents problems, too.” So, Dr. Neumann warns: “Discourage children from lying directly on the sand.”
While you’re at it, “Walking barefooted is another ‘don’t.’ Have children wear lightweight, ventilated, hard-soled footwear that covers the toes. This helps prevent stubbed toes, lacerations, puncture wounds, and burns from hot sand. Ideally, footwear should be worn for wading in the water.”
In fact, why take your kids to the beach at all? Better to keep them at home on a hard, nonporous surface, free of dirt and obstacles, checking frequently for venomous spiders, disease-bearing insects, and sewage. Children should also be in steel-toed work boots. Come to think of it, chain-mail wouldn’t be a bad idea.
But even that isn’t enough. Simply keeping the kids at home doesn’t ensure they’re safe either, especially if they make it into the backyard. Parents Magazine warns that “bees are attracted to flowers, so don’t put fragrances or floral-patterned clothing on kids.” Surely, you’ve seen swarms of bees chasing children in floral prints.
The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that if your moppets still insist on playing outside, the little daredevils at least should “limit sun exposure during peak intensity hours-between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.” That shouldn’t put a crimp in anyone’s day, should it?

When I was a kid, my mother always told me to wear sunscreen during hot days. However, she never forced me to wear it. Once I got burned by the sun, I learned to always wear sunscreen. We need to let kids learn from their mistakes rather than shielding them from them. Experience is the best teacher; plus, kids will listen to you more once they understand that what you say is logical.

Becoming ill as a child is REALLY important to improving your immune system later in life where illness becomes harder to fight. Being exposed to minor illness as a child is really a benefit, and you can google 1000's of facts and scientific studies that show this.
If you try to stop your kid from ever hurting or getting sick, he won't get sick and won't create antibodies and because of that, he Will grow getting Very sick often. Because didn't get sick back then and didn't develop antibodies. The same can be Said about the emotional part, If you protect your kid from every sort of emotional pain or frustration, putting him in a dome of a perfect marshmallow land where bad things Never happen... I totally agree. Once having gone thru some minor illnesses here and there, we are much stronger as adults. I can easily go dance in the rain nowadays and everything is ok.
Wow, I drank from the hose, spent hours at the beach w/o shoes, and played endlessly at parks with grass, cement, and dirt but yet still managed to make it to 40+. As have all the kids I grew up with. This is silliness.

Sand is actually extremely clean and non toxic since it consists of pure silica. Unlike, dirt, sand has practically no pathogens or contaminants. The human body of an ordinary healthy child can adapt to hot sand and sunshine with callouses and tanning. Hose water has similar purity to faucet water, and comes from municipal water supplies.
btw, "Don't swim alone" and "Don't get into cars with strangers" have genuine value. All these other nonsensical paranoid worries will so confuse a kid that the kid will forget the really important safety rules.

I knew a person that gave their teen a huge water jug to drink while working out, which was like 30min a day. I warned them both about water toxicity and they were pissed at me. So much for trying to help.

I went outside a lot as a kid, but then my parents ruined it for me because the got "educational" toys. All I learned was that you should never be educational toys. I'm 17 and I still can't even leave the house by myself.

The most dangerous thing kids are regularly exposed to are Television, Computers, and Cell phones. Where did the Tide pod challenge come from? Online of course. Kids and technology don't mix. They see horrendous crap online and then act it out in real life. Elsa Gate anyone? Parents please don't let you kids have their own cell phone or tablet until they are older. Get your kids into sports or boy/girl scouts. Sedentary lifestyle causes obesity and a million other diseases.

I disagree with the "no kid should have technology" sentiment. What you fail to realize is that degeneracy exists in real world, not just online. Technology merely exposes the harsh realities of life that were hidden from books of centuries ago. Thats why the past seems so "innocent and glamourous" because people were more localized back then and had to rely on word of mouth. But people can lie/omit/exaggerate details. I feel that my generation is the last generation that is "The Good Old Days" my good old days were spent outside playing in the grassy fields, climbing trees, having a cook out every month and it really made me happy, because i was right where i wanted to be and everything made me over joyed.
I'm 14, many of you will say I am still in my good old days but I am one of the most responsible teens you will ever see, I don't get into fights, I don't annoyingly blabber on to a person when they don't want to hear it.
I still do love being outside, but my younger sister and anyone else who is younger has stopped going to parks in my town, when ever I go out I see parents at a restaurant booth and all the kids are on phones or tablets.
The good old days is almost a thing of the past and I am basically the last generation that will be in it sadly.

Lmao i remember every kid in class being shocked that i didn't have a phone. Well now i do. I got one on my 18th birthday. It's nice for learning stuff like how to catch catfish. But can also suck up your whole Saturday.
I'm 14 and I have always climbed trees, caught salamanders, and climbed rocks in the woods. I have never broken a bone or fallen from a tree. In fact, I've never had any serious injuries in my life. I see kids on their own phones and tablets all the time nowadays. Every kid I meet is always so wowed when they see I can climb, but if they spent more time outsid they would be masters. It saddens me to see them wasting their childhoods. Parents need to stop buying their kids phones and stop keeping them indoors.

My childhood was far from perfect, yet it was actually overcoming mishaps which taught me 3 important things about life: How to be anti-fragile- the tough times build inner strength, how to creatively problem solve - experimenting with the outdoors and tools yields understanding how to construct things, and laws of nature, and most importantly - how to have fun, for fun's sake - I often channel this in my adult life, to not stress in high-pressure situations or worry obsessively about outcomes. Gamifying life can make it pleasurable, and internalize that even tough times have an optimal method for strategically moving ahead without an overbearing intensity. Lauging with life changes everything.

AH yes... I ended up getting a lesson about fire extinguishers when I found out about overclocking. I was little and didn't know about the risks yet and happened to have a slim line model. Morals of that story, never overclock a slim line and always kept a fire extinguisher rated for electrical fires near by.

We moved out to the country and my kids are planting food and digging in dirt. They’re cleaning horse stalls and chicken coops. They’re milking goats and building with wood
They’re also watching movies and playing video games. We eat healthy food but we also love ice cream and chocolate

The stupidest thing I've seen happen at my already 'helicopter-parent' like school was when we went on a mini-field trip down to our river to look at the bugs. We were the last class to go, and when we got there, they said "Because our environmentalists have found some GARDENER SNAKES in our river, we will not be going in due to safety concerns."
The environmentalists faces as the teachers announced this said it all. If you didn't know, Gardener snakes do not bite people, and are unable to pierce skin because their fangs are too small. This is why they sell them at PET STORES. So basically they called the trip off because of some harmless, friendly pet snakes.

It's absolutely hilarious how paranoid society has become. When I was growing up we were out of the house first thing in the morning and didn't some back until dinner time. There were no cell phones, no obsessive checking in from parents, no overly protective monitoring of absolutely everything a kid was doing every single second of a day.
I feel pity for kids growing up now in this paranoid atmosphere. And it's little wonder why the younger generations have no concept of what freedom actually is. We use to stay on bikes during the summer and staying outside all the time.
I lived in the outskirts of Los Angeles. There were hills all around us. I would get up, make a peanut-butter and jelly sandwich and tell my mom I'd be home by 3 or 4? I would collect golf balls at the local golf course and be allowed to wack them at the driving range. I found an owl's nest once in the hills. We built a secret fort in an abandoned lot.
And we all survived pretty healthy.
Sounds like you had a very similar childhood to me. There used to be dozens of those little ground owls all over out here in LA before it got industrialized, and pheasants as well. We also built an underground fort in an open field, but got in trouble when the tractor fell in.

Miss the good old days. In the 80s and early 90s Kids could be kids with no rules. The new generation is addictive to social media and have no idea what real life is all about. Kids go outside and play Don't ruin your childhood pass you by. You only live once. Enjoy it it passes you by so fast you only realize how important the time you wasted when it's too late. You only live once enjoy it while you can.

Wow, I once thought life was perfectly safe, My grandpa helped me plant our own garden as a kid, pulled weeds, even ate some of the stuff we grew. I played on the swing-sets and didn't die, Boy was I lucky, no way can I be sure my kids will be lucky enough to survive such dangerous activities.

I've decided protecting only my kids from sand isn't enough. Me and my family will live in a bomb shelter with no sharp edges ware the floors and walls and ceiling are made of pillows, I've also disinfected every inch, 5 times. I've also took steps to cut off the internet, (I'll be in there in a minute) kids get too much screen time. Once my kids are adults, I'll explain to them the dangers of the world when their minds can comprehend it, and We'll stay in there the rest of our lives... just to be safe ya know. I've stocked it with fully organic food too. This isn't paranoia at all.

I wish they would make an episode about the school system. I fell into depression when I was *11* just because I was pressured into planning out all my classes through highschool in elementary school, getting straight A's, taking all of classes advanced, accelerated, or one year early, and getting into an advanced highschool and the best college.
I was so focused on school that I missed being a teenager altogether, and that really mucked me up. Some kids need to be told that school isn't everything.

My kid is considered a 'maniac' by most parents. I think shes awesome. She broke her arm when she was three from jumping off the playground, now shes six and climbs over fences, rides her bike in the street, and does calisthenics on the playground.. Yes she gets sick, yes she will sustain plenty of injuries, but she loves life and she wont let the fear of uncertain outcomes keep her from doing what she loves. Dont let your love for your child keep them from enjoying the best thing they have going for them either.
Supervision is good, too, but it is awesome to watch the kids' adventurous spirit take hold and see what they are truly capable of.

I was never much for the beach myself, but boy how I loved the woods and the lakes, streams, and ponds. I grew up in a fairly rural part of CT, I had the run of about 6 square miles of woods behind the house. I learned every inch of it too. This is why people today have become so soft. People wonder why I have such a strong immune system or don’t have allergies. It’s because my parents not only let me, but encouraged me to run around, scrape my knees and get dirty. Hell, at one of my family’s favorite vacation spots, my favorite activity was playing in a canoe filled with hose water!

Allergies have very little correlation with a strengthened immune system, so in that you are correct Villhelm47. When it comes to a persons predisposition to getting sick, it does though. (granted, a persons genes and biology also play key roles) If someone avoids germs at all costs, while another just doesn't care, the person who is constantly exposed to germs will generally get sick far less than the person who tries to avoid them.
I fear for my 3 year old and 4 month old boys! I can only imagine how coddled and cautious their generation will become. I hope they give us the security code to unlock their kids cages, when Grandma and Grandpa come to visit.

When I was little, we lived on the edge of a huge stretch of woods. I used to constantly get lost in those woods and eventually find my way back home. Good times,
No shame in that everybody gets lost in the woods at some point in time. I learned a long time ago, that you never walk off the road without a compass. A compass can't tell you where you are, but it can tell you the direction you are going! Sort of like life, In order to know where you are going, you have to know where you have been.
I remember when I was little, I picked up a big stick and my dad took it away and broke it. He said I could poke my eyes with it. A few kids later, my folks were letting my little sister collect twigs and stones in a bowl she'd carry around outside. I guess the protection level depends on birth order sometimes.
I mean, yeah birth order does definitely affect how strict parents are, but there's a difference between a few twigs and a huge stick. The twigs would snap or just poke the eye (not saying that doesn't hurt, just that it wouldn't be permanent damage), while a large stick would probably turn your eye into mush.
That is funny, I used to find huge sticks and make swords or spears out of them constantly swinging them around in the woods and my yard. Parents were fine with it. Funny how different parents are.

I drank hose water, played tackle football and rode my bike without a helmet, dug in miles of sand, caught snakes and turtles, got stung by bees (many times), stayed out in the sun all day, walked for miles exploring, made a lot of bad decisions which I learned from and had a heck of a great childhood and survived it. I wouldn't trade it for anything. When I see children out, being kids it takes me back. Don't rob that from your kids!

My parent’s rules at the beach were simple and I find that it’s cool that they always had reasonable explanations in order to teach us why and help us figure things out in life. At one of the beaches we went the higher up areas with what was essentially permanently dry sand would be hot in the afternoon, so we could run around and do whatever, but if we were going up there to go to the car or bathrooms, just slip on your flip flops first. When in the ocean stay near the land, not because of some stupid unreasonable fear or because “I said so” but because the tide can and will pull on you, if you don’t notice it because you’re not carefully remaining near the beach you can be swept out and that’s how you drown before anyone can get to you when you’re 7. Also don’t drink the salt water if you’re thirsty, since it’s quite salty it actually doesn’t help at all. Other than that we didn’t really have specific yet overarching rules for every little thing, and most was just run with some common sense and morals. The biggest problem with this oversaturation of fears isn’t that they make rules for their kids, it’s that the rules are convoluted and limit the entire ability to be in nature or the real world at all. There’s a difference between wearing a life vest while boating or a helmet while biking, and not being allowed on the boat because it’s not perfect and might sink, not being allowed to bike because a helmet, knee pads, gloves, leather protection, none of it’s enough and that guy on the corner who’s a totally normal man scares your mom who thinks he’s a pedo.
One of these two rules, and its reasons, makes sense. The other one doesn’t.
God I’m so glad my parents aren’t like that. My only rules are the “Stranger Danger” rules, and don’t go anywhere without someone else or permission. That’s it though.

The real reason of living is to live life to the fullest, I have hiked over 7 mountains and it all of the time in one only took me 10 hours! I have went in caves that no one has gone in over 20 years!

When I was a kid I was locked OUT of the house. I fell down, crashed my bike, got chased by animals, bit by snakes, fell out of trees and guess what????.... I grew up perfectly healthy and I not afraid of my own shadow.
You too, I remember once there was a snake in a pile of wood sunning himself, I was young around 11, so I grabbed him by the back of the head. To show to my mom she had a fit about that one, called my Uncle Felix, he comes down I still holding on to this snake- he takes it from me, and put it back where it was. Mom thought it was a Copper Head, it was just a milk snake. Yep, one of may standard phrases was looked mom no hands! Uncle Felix died in '75 I was just 20, Mom when in 76 two weeks before my 21st birthday. I really had it good as a kid!

Me too! I remember crashing my bike down a 20 ft ravine and then climbing back out and kept riding. I don't even think I told my parents. Then we had a dirt hill. It was the best thing ever. My mom found a slide in the trash, and just put it on the hill. We got to do everything on that slide you couldn't do at the playground. Roll toys down it. Slide on your stomach. Send rocks and dirt down it. Have someone stand at the bottom, while you slide down to knock them over (which is a pretty stupid idea, now that I think about it...)
Lol my cousins and I drug each other around on full-size ATVs with sleds by the time we were 6 or 7, even in the summer. I remember we had competitions to see who could hold on the longest. That stuff was so fun 😂

Kids need to have accidents and get sick. It’s a function of life and evolution. Obviously, they shouldn’t be playing with guns or knives, swimming alone, or doing drugs, but some of the advice given, triggers helicopter parenting, which then leads to the present day millennials who expect everything to be handed to them.
I’m not a Father, but I did want to be one in my 20s. When I hit 30, things changed for me. The best thing I would do is follow my Father’s example in how he raised me and he did an excellent job if I may be so biased. 🙂

My wife is like that. I’m not. While growing up, summer was ours. We lived in a small NC town. I wish all kids could have grown up there. Paradise. We were pretty much free to do what we wanted to from dusk til dawn. Three boys on bikes. Head for the beach house, all welcomed, for basketball, tennis, swimming, fishing, playing in the dirt. The owner was there with around 3 other adults. That’s it. With like 40 plus kids just running around. Then it was to the streets with bikes. Riding around to pick up other kids. We would ride for hours. Swimming. Many residents had water front properties. Our parents took us around, we talked to the neighbors, most gave us permission to swim and fish from their private piers and boat slips. It was a dream come true. Now if we messed up, everyone had our phone number. Now a days, not so great. As the narrator said, pretty much everything is off limits to be safe. My wife thinks that. But when I’m there, let’s have fun. Drives her crazy. But they are only kids once.

Hey, nothing like going to the town dump on a rat shooting safari, don't need much just a 22 Long Rifle, a brick of 22's ( 500 rounds) and count just the misses. After a while, you learn really how to shoot. it comes in very useful later on in life, deer hunting, not making an ass out of your self on the known distance range when you have to do your Army service, life is a lot easier if you are a screw up in the army but you can shoot better than most. I am sure you Russians know the drill when it comes to such things.

I got hit by a truck when i was 9, shattered my knee and femur into 23 pieces, was in the hospital for two months, a wheel chair and walker for 9 months, had to re learn how to walk, and I'm very happy that my parents let me be a kid instead of being a home body that had no fun.
The point of my comment was to point out your personal experience has nothing to do with the objective truth that a kid cannot have fun if they are dead, or die early because their parent did not protect them.
A child can have fun an not get hit by a truck an shatter their knee plus femur, a child can have fun without drinking hose water, a child can have fun without getting into a strangers car, its all the same preventable things that may limit the fun you have later
when i was a kid parents kicked us out of the house each day. go to the pool (mile walk or bike ride away) go to park (half mile), go to school playground, (half mile), go play in creek down street, go ride bikes around town, go play in woods, run on the trails by the river. the lake just outside town had 3 summer camps and swimming area in it. Trails around we road bikes on. we would be out till street lights came on and as teens till midnight in summer. guess what i never get sick, i never get flu shots, poison ivy barely affects me, couple small bumps is all and wild animals arent afraid of me and walk up to me.
