Back in late 80s after I was discharged from the Navy, Ralph Lauren was really popular, and I always wore a variation on a theme. My favorite outfit was a pair of Khakis a blue chambray shirt, white socks, and an ox blood penny loafer. In my pennys there weren't the traditional pennies. I took the penny, 1 for each shoe, then for the right shoe I wrapped the penny in a $5 bill, forthe left I wrapped it in a $1 bill. So I always had $6 bucks on me, so long as I was wearing my dollar loafers.
Ulvis Barkāns I know this is an old comment but I was wondering if I was the only one that noticed. It’s like a cross between a shot eating grin or holding back laughter grin. Not in a bad way or anything, I kind of like it, it makes me laugh.
Really enjoyed your explanation of the origins of Khakis and Chinos. I spent fifteen years working at an international airport, and saw all manner of different dress styles. Some guys looked like they were going to the county landfill, while others looked very sharp. One day, I saw a guy wearing khakis with black shoes and a black quarter zip sweater. I always thought it would be too much contrast, but it looked sharp. I have a pair of brass colored chinos that I wear with black chukka boots and a black sweater now. I'm very confident wearing that outfit. Best wishes to you!
When I was in high school I wore chinos that had a belt in the back - a nice touch. (I'm surprised Polo hasn 't ever brought that back.) Starting when I got to college, I wore Brooks Bros. chinos. In those days, they were unhemmed and the tailor would custom hem them free of charge. Always cuffs. Alas, those days are long gone. And, yes, I am that old.
Hmm.. maybe it's because I am in college, but I see chinos as an alternative to jeans, just slightly more dressy, and pleated and cuffed khakis as out of date and something older guys would wear. The GAP Lived in Slim is an incredible pair of pants, very stylish and fit super well. Anyone looking for a youthful casual pair of pants should check those out first.
I agree. Chinos lend themselves to smart casual or semi-formal, but can also be everyday trousers. I do view chinos as being more summery; I would never wear jeans in the heart of summer mainly because of the heat, but also because they're colder weather trousers, whereas chinos are hotter weather trousers.
I know plenty about your culture. I get 3 to 4 calls a day from Indian people at call centers who take jobs from my country and contribute zero to our economy. They don't pay taxes or buy anything at all (because they have no physical presence). It's not their fault, but I've lost jobs to India and watched as companies I work for interview Indian after Indian while lowering American wages.
The word Khaki came from Khak which means dust, it's a Persian word also used in Urdu and Hindi. Urdu is a mixture Arabic, Persian and Turkish language so that's why we use word Khaki which was actually taken from Persian language.
@@efandmk3382 In Farsi/Persian/Irani Khak = soil/dust "Khaki" simply means "Earthy"... it can mean the earthy color or more common when something is dusty. Ralph Lauren PL chinos are selling for $450.00 U.S. each and are made in Italy. What do you think of this price point? Are they going to fit that much better or look $450 better than the $60 chinos? Over the top, crazy, or worth it?
Another excellent video..!!! Don't know about the rest of you guys, but I always referred to Khakis by the brand name, you got it; Dockers. Question for you my friend. What is your take on turtleneck shirts? As a 60 year old guy, I've worn black turtlenecks with khakis in the past with kind compliments. Question is, how about a sport coat with that combo? As always, love the content brother. Keep it coming please.
Yes, of course a sport coat goes with a turtleneck. A corduroy sport coat would be perfect with that combination. Wide Wales are more casual, tight wales are more formal.
Great video. I especially like when you explain the historical aspect. Any chance you could do a review of American shoe companies that still make their shoes in the USA?
Corduroy is the best fabric IMHO if you are not going for regular business, classic, or formal style. Corduroy shirts are great. I haven't had the best luck with having corduroy trousers fit me as well as I'd like. A corduroy sports jacket goes with so many smart casual combinations you wouldn't have to duplicate a look for a long time. I recently got many compliments wearing a corduroy sports jacket with an olive Irish grandfather's shirt.

Hello, Gentleman's Gazette. Can you please make a video on color coordination, specifically in the IVY and TRAD style. The color combinations you use are amazing and unique. Thank you!
Great video, I am trying to find a good pair but failing. I am a size 30 (Netherlands) but my calves are huge so they fit me good but not the lower part. Even the regular fits are to tight. Any ideas?
This is confusing me. Sven says we should avoid mixing navy chinos with a navy blazer because the colours will clash. I click on the business casual article and right there we see a man in what appears to be dark blue leather trainers, dark blue chinos and dark blue jacket. He looks perfectly fine, too... so...?
Navy can be like black, there are different shades of both colours, in fact it's really hard to get a good match in pieces that are not a suit. A near miss in colour matching is really stand out awful, it's usually much better to go for a full on contrast for the best look. If you want a full colour match then go for a suit.
I would consider some of the advice here on what's office appropriate to be a bit dated. Men's fashion has become far less restrictive. You have to remember, that colors, cuts, and other choices in men's fashion pretty much went back to the end of the enlightenment era and into the industrial revolution. Men's fashion became a counter to the fanciful aristocracy and as a sign of equality there was a "we all dress like dock workers, sailors, and field workers now" thing. Which is why long pants and loose fitting work clothes became a thing. This intertwined with Victorian ideas of wearing modedt dull colors and intertwined with other ideas of masculinity being about being a modest manual worker. Through the 1900's there were pushes back against this at time: t-shirts in the 50s, more patterns in the 70s, and more casualness in general starting in the 90's. But the framework has remained. Culturally I believe we're finally starting to come out of the idea that there is one version of masculinity and it's manual labor adjacent, and into more self expression, more colors, more casual and practical options, etc. Part of that is that I've seen quite a lot of relaxing of standard office men's wardrobe. The key is to look well put together and age appropriate.
