Thank you from 2023!!!! Your video alone after the tens of tons was the only one that used this method and was the only one that worked. After new brake switches, mechanic service, not able to take the car to the dealer due to age of vehicle, and dodging the police for weeks trying to make it home without having to spend hundreds on rewiring. Lol, could kiss you my guy! Going to head to work in the morning with confidence for once in a long while!
This problem just popped up on my wife's 09 Chevy Malibu LS at 136K. Followed the instructions in the video, took less than 5 minutes, and it fixed the problem. Thought for sure it was going to be a much bigger problem. Thank you for sharing the fix!
Wow. This completely worked. I've been struggling with this problem for over two years; but it would go away for a few months, then come back for a few days, then go away for several more months. I took it to several garages and invested tons of money into replacing various brake parts thinking that was the issue. It was frustrating taking it to garages and it not having the issue once I took it there... "Your brake lights are fine, are you sure you're not riding with your foot on the brake...?" One dollar for a packet of grease fixed everything. So many fucked up situations caused by this, got pulled over by cops twice, almost got rear ended before I knew my lights were always on and was subjected to an enormous road rage incident. It was at the point where I was going to just sell the car because I wouldn't know if my brake lights were going to be working this particular day. It was really that bad. Magically found this video after constant googling and all is well in the world now. You saved me thousands of dollars.
Hubby replaced the whole switch, THEN had to pay for the new switch to be programmed once he installed it. His internet, google, wifely assistance allergy strikes AGAIN! Right in the wallet! HAHAHAHA
Thank you for this video, bro I tried to troubleshoot it myself since I've been working on cars my whole adult life & I'm 46. But that cleared it up w/o issues. I wouldn't have ever found it on my own, even with what I know. This fixed it w/o even costing anything... Keep doing what you're doing!!!👍
THANK YOU Dave!! This has been bothering me for a few months now! Even the GM Dealer couldn't figure it out. I woke up this morning got some as they now call it (Bulb Grease) . Did just what you said, but I did it with both plugs, cleaned with a can of air and then added the grease and WHAM!!! everything is now working perfect! Your the best!
I want to thank you very much for this video. I have been to a mechanic twice over this issue and they could not figure out the issue... charging me 200 dollars. Needless to say, I am leaving this facility.
I got here on accident, and I must say, the "sorry, I just woke up and want to get this done" comment was funny as F. Thanks for the chuckle and take your thumbs up
It’s 2018 ... I have a 2010 Malibu LT and my interior fuse box looks exactly the same in the video.. I did exactly as you did in the video and my brake lights no longer stay on while driving I did this fix last saturday Oct 27,2018 and I’m very impressed it worked !! Total cost was jus $10 !!! Thankyou my Guy!!!!
Dave Cain is there a difference between bulb grease & dielectric grease? Because I used the bulb grease & it didn’t work because the problem is still occurring after I used the bulb grease
Let me say this, I figured this wasn’t gonna work on my grandmother’s 07 Malibu LTZ because we have been dumbfounded for about a year now trying to fix her tail lights, brake lights and turn signals but I’ll be damned if it didn’t fix them all except the rear turn signals. That’s good enough though! Thank you so much man! That die electric grease was $15 but worth it!
It's 5 a.m. I'm driving down the road with my brake lights stuck on watching this video. So I reach over and smack the console where you are working and the brake lights go off instantly thanks so much
DAVE THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! I’ve taken my Malibu in twice to see what was wrong with the cruise (I travel heavily but can’t afford a new car) and both times they told me they didn’t know. So struggling with no cruise and weird brake lights for almost a year I was hopeless. I came across this video last night and bought the grease today and applied it. Seamless brake lights and cruise! I really appreciate the help.
Wow man thank you sooooo much. I had a road rage incident where someone apparently thought I was holding my brakes on purpose I guess? Tail gated then sped past me with the universal sign for hello. After I found out I had a brake light issue I searched the net for a solution. All I did atm was unplug and reinsert that deal and it fixed it. I'm going to pick me up some of that D-Electric Grease though. Again thanks a ton
K Soud as pointed out by another commenter I mentioned the wrong plug. The one I fiddled with in the video is the one that has kept my problem fixed for two and a half years now.
I did this to my 2008 Saturn Aura XE and it worked but it started doing it again and I applied more of the grease. Worked for a few days then tail lights start doing it again.. any advice ?
This also worked for me. I didn't even clean it like he said. I just unplugged and plugged back several times and that did the trick. Thanks a lot man.
Wow thank you, i did this for just a couple of minutes with little grease, this worked on my 2010 malibu that usually the third brake light would never then on,will keep y’all updated
Thank you very much for the video. Seems to have fixed (at least for now) the brake light problem and the ESC/Traction Control warning lights on my 2009 Malibu.
Thank you for posting this fix. We used it to resolve our problems with a 2010 Malibu, which included malfunctioning brake lights as well as ESC and traction service alarms.
Dresden Schultz.... I have a 2009 Malibu ltz with the 3.6 v6 engine. I had issues a year ago with the malfunctioning brake lights/cruise control. They did the recall last year and this year it is happening again. Took it to the dealership and they said because the recall was done the recall was "closed" and General motors will not cover the repair. I guess General motors considers something fixed if it lasts longer than 12months before issues arise from the same problem. Someone needs to open a class action lawsuit as I'm sure there have been people rear-ended on the highway from these faulty brake lights
Thank you very much for that video. That answered some questions and solved some of the problems. I heard about that but did not know where the connector was again thank you very much.
We purchased my wife's Maax about a year an a half ago and when symptoms developed I checked your video and took care of the problem. A few months later my wife called to tell me she was getting messages on the message center, the cruise dropped out etc. I told her to bring it home and found the connector was still good. I cleaned all the ground connections near the CPM and strut tower and coated them with battery terminal protector. The problem has not returned. I did however uncover a serious melt down of wires from the rear fuse holder to the front of the vehicle. The front console wire harness was also melted. The cigar lighters up front had not worked since we got the car. When I finally had time to look at it I found the fuse was melted in the rear fuse panel. Either the original owner held the lighter in or the was a defect. I heard there were bulletins for defective wiring harnesses but, was told they don't cover my vin. Recently the right rear stop light and turn signal quit working.
Had the same problem. applied Dielectric grease to the C2 connector, but didnt fix it. I then applied it to the J2 connector (the other blue one - horizontal) and it fixed the problem. Thanks for the video!!!
I called the Chevrolet dealership near me and told me this was a recall and they told me that this issue was resolved on my vehicle and opened it there was grease already in there so I took a small paint brush pushed it around and put it back
Thanks so much for this!! Seriously I've had so many issues with this and every time I bring it in to the service center they charge me $300 for this...how dumb
Will this work on an 08 Cobalt? I'm having an issue with the brake lights staying on after I release the brake, then pump the pedal and they'll go off for a few stops and then start again.
It can't hurt to try it. I would say yes, if this is the problem you're having with your car, it probably wouldn't matter the year model, and greasing the diodes/pins is really never a bad thing.
This is a critical recall and should be taken to a dealer for new parts. This and other year malibu's, mine is a 2006. You can be traveling and your cruise control will not disconnect with a brake pedal push. At first they corrected the problem using this procedure as you described. It kept occurring. Now there is a recall service bulletin. There have been a couple of near death accidents involving this problem with cruise control. The brake light problem is an indication of this and the cruise control works intermittently at best.
the GM technical service bulletin didn't call for new parts. what parts would you change anyway? the tsb calls for exactly what I've done here. find it. read it.
Dave Cain I second this. The TSB is for exactly this issue, and provides the solution you showed here. In my opinion is a cheap BS bandaid on a serious problem. I brought mine in to have the recall work, then a year later the issue occurred again they changed break pedal switch and pedal position sensor three months passed and the issue is happening again. I'll take your teaching here and try to fix it myself.
I tried this on my 2008 Saturn Aura xe and it worked for a few days then it started happening again. I just thought to add more and it worked, for a few days again. So it just keeps doing the same thing. Any advice ?
hola bendiciones una pregunta en que lado de la caja de fusibles o del vehículo Chevrolet Malibú 2007 se encuentra el fhaser direccionales es que no emiten ningun ruido y quisiera cambiarle
Hey dave, I did this around 2 weeks ago and it worked fine for the first 3 days. Is bulb grease the same type of grease you're using? I got a small 99 cent packet and pretty much spread all of it gently between the connectors. It started having the issue again after 3 days so I used a brush and tried to... idk, wipe corosion off? It worked for another day once I unplugged it and plugged it back in. Im not sure if the issue is how much grease you use, or if it's the connectors and pins themself? Should I try deoxit contact cleaner? Also, when I start my car and apply pressure on the brake to put it in drive or reverse, it gives this weird grinding feeling, then the brake lights will flash. Sometimes restarting the car a few times will get it to stop doing this, but it will start again a few miles down the road. I really thought this fixed it but it started again. Idk if taking it to a shop again and telling them I think its an issue with this connector (they coudnt find an issue before) would do me any good???
Well, it's been two years now, still no problem. Interestingly, someone pointed out that I demonstrated the wrong connector. I checked the TSB, and sure enough, I DID video myself showing you all the wrong one. Man I really was asleep when I shot this video! Anyway, it wouldn't hurt to do both connectors if you are so inclined. static.nhtsa.gov/odi/inv/2013/INRD-RQ13001-56112P.PDF
12 Malibu brake lights staying on when car is off. Looks like they must have done this fix at the dealership years ago, but it’s an issue now. Hopefully more grease will fix it.
My car has the same problem. I pulled all the plugs and they had the grease on them. There was no visible corrosion on the connectors. I cleaned the plugs with electrical cleaner and still no luck. My brake lights do not work when the auto lights are on (all of them do light up though). cruise does not work along with the power mirrors and manual shift buttons. any ideas?
with 5000 views on this video one can assume that 5000 people have experienced this exact same issue (never mind all the people who have not looked on TH-cam for trouble shooting steps to this issue). How has this not been escalated to a more serious recall in which the BCM must be re-designed and replaced!?
Because In the service bulletin it literally tells you how to fix it and because it only affects vin numbers ranging for 2 years it’s not really presentable as a class action lawsuit. It’s a design oversight.
Dave Cain ,,will buy some and try..havent noticed lights staying on..but just started problem with pressing brake and cant shift from park...changed the solenoid..still doing it
in your description, you said "seems to be doing better", does that mean you have the same problem but just less frequently, or has the problem completely gone away after you applied the greese?
moo0oody92 I ended up going to the mechanic. they replaced the traction control button cuz it was malfunctioning. and they replaced the brake light switch. It coated me $189 Canadian dollars. and the $113 for the diagnoses thing to figure out what the problem was. lemme know of this helps. I think its better if u go to the mechanic and get it off your mind. I was stressing over 2 months with this but I can finally drive in peace.
I had this issue fixed by the dealership couple months ago on chevy malibu 2010. It took em awhile eventually it got fixed. Now my car was starting to do the same thing AGAIN. This is safety concern to me and i think that Chevy should adress this as a recall.
I tried this and it worked for a while and started messing up again tonight. Tried this again but not working. Still having to press hard to get the lights on. Any ideas????
GM Recall #: N130036 NHTSA # 14V252 Date Issued: May 14, 2014 Recall Title: BRAKE LAMP MALFUNCTION Recall Description: General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in 2004-2012 Malibu, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6, 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles. On these vehicles, over time an increased resistance can develop in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection system and result in voltage fluctuations or intermittency in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit that can cause service brake lamp malfunction. As a result, the service brake lamps may illuminate when the service brakes are not being applied, or may not illuminate when the service brakes are being applied. Additionally, cruise control may not engage. If cruise control is engaged, additional service brake pedal travel may be required to disengage it. Service brake pedal application may not be required to move the shift lever out of PARK, or additional service brake pedal travel may be required to move the shift lever out of PARK. Traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features, if equipped, may be disabled. Service ESC and/or Traction Control tell-tales may illuminate with this condition. Safety Risk Description: These conditions may increase the risk of a crash. Repair Description: Dealers are to attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and on the BAS and harness connector, and relearn the brake pedal home position free of charge.
It's the upper blue plug, not this one. I just looked it up on Alldata for the G6 which is exactly the same. There is a fancy dealer fix involving wire ties and a rubber spacer that isn't really necessary.
Hey Dave, Did you disconnect the battery 1st, I say this because anytime you are working on electrical the air bags can deploy accidentally or the electrical system can short out, Please email me and let me know, I have the same problem but there is an additional problem intermittently the shift handle will not move out of park. GM TSB mentions that it may seem like an interlock solenoid problem but it related to the BCM connector. I read something online that states the shift handle issue as one of the symptoms. GM web site says my 2004 Malibu is not in the recall based on my vin number. By the way when I jiggle the key from off to accessory and push the shifter button then I can move the shifter out of park. Something tells me there is also an ignition switch problem and by the way GM refuses to cover the repair under the recall. If anyone also has this problem please email me. As a follow up GM is covering this under special policy but if they do not volunteer this information you should ask. I have a video of my car with the brake lights on when I am not in the car and it also shows I am not able to move the shifter out of park without jiggling the key. Another words one hand on the key the other on the shifter and moving key from off to the accessory position.
Dave Shostack I have the same problem from time to time.. I jus purchase the vehicle and started to think it has major issues.. if you find out anymore information on the reason it won't shift from park please inform me. thanks
My 2004 Malibu just started the brake light issue, stays on constantly, no shifter issue "yet". ive also read the cruise control can give issue as well. thanks for sharing the video, will try this tomorrow but am concerned if i should disconnect my battery first as well. BTW, I recently received a letter from "the Executive Director, Global Connected Customer Experience" stating the issue with the BCM and/or BAS circuit and to bring to dealer for repair.
My problem went away on its own but I did receive a notice from GM. I have video of my problem when it was happening I had to jiggle the key to get it out of park one hand on the key the other on the shift handle. GM will not admit it but I think the computer itself is defective
This is the same shit the G6's do, Equinox and Torrent, The Trucks, GM. there is a bulletin on SOME vehicles but it all boils down to the same thing, GM is ripping people off by not owning up to their cheap connector pin designs. They picked the wrong companies to male this crap for the vehicles and shit tons of folks are having these problems. Count yourself Lucky that you BCM " body control module" that box you just pulled that big blue plug from , has not Forgotten that your BPPS
It is so much easier to see it done rather than to read the TSB. Fixed my 2009 Malibu in 5 minutes. THANKS!
You’re a literal life saver! Saved me from getting into an accident and from overpaying a mechanic shop. Thank you
Wow. This completely worked. I've been struggling with this problem for over two years; but it would go away for a few months, then come back for a few days, then go away for several more months. I took it to several garages and invested tons of money into replacing various brake parts thinking that was the issue.

Thank you totally worked. For years my cruise control has stopped temporarily then starts again, and now I just noticed the light issue lifesaver.
I haven't had any problems since I made this video. :-)

I’m having the same issues with my Malibu 2010! Was it in the exact same spot as the video?
This works for my car! Thank you so very much. I was completely dreading trying to change the position sensor. Thanks again.
DAVE THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! I’ve taken my Malibu in twice to see what was wrong with the cruise (I travel heavily but can’t afford a new car) and both times they told me they didn’t know. I did both connectors on my '06 Malibu and it seems to have solved the issue. Saved me from changing the brake light switch again. Thank you!
Bro THANK YOU!!! You saved my grandma sooooo much money!

K Soud as pointed out by another commenter I mentioned the wrong plug. The one I fiddled with in the video is the one that has kept my problem fixed for two and a half years now.
Year three. Still good! I have been on several long road trips with this car and to date it has not had one hiccup. :-)

is it still good?
follow-up. still no problems and this cured the problem of having to push hard on the brake pedal to be able to shift out of park.
Thank you I had this issue
For my son's car chevy malibu 2010
I was always worry and scared to spend to pay for a fix
Finally is fixed
Since I see a few asking, this applies to:
04-12 Malibu
04-07 Malibu Maxx
05-10 G6
07-09 Saturn Aura
Thank you for posting this fix. We used it to resolve our problems with a 2010 Malibu, which included malfunctioning brake lights as well as ESC and traction service alarms.
gary hall I've been having the traction ESC problem with the brake lights also. Hoping it helps my 2009 Chevy Malibu. Working on it Sunday.

Thanks so much for the video . Been 2 days works well thanks to you .
Thank you very much for that video. That answered some questions and solved some of the problems.
I heard about that but did not know where the connector was again thank you very much.
I saw this and did it. It worked!! 08 malibu 3.6 ltz....lights come on approximately 3 seconds after release. This fixed it.
Well I’ll be damn...I have a ‘06 Malibu LS and this definitely worked! Thanks brother 💯
We purchased my wife's Maax about a year an a half ago and when symptoms developed I checked your video and took care of the problem. Had the same problem. applied Dielectric grease to the C2 connector, but didnt fix it. I then applied it to the J2 connector (the other blue one - horizontal) and it fixed the problem. Thanks for the video!!!
Eric Williams I'm gonna try the horizontal one, because I still have the same problem. thanks for sharing.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR INFORMATION!!! IT SAVED ME A LOT OF TIME!!!! WORKS PERFECTLY NOW!
Thank you so much so appreciative you put this online had the same problem thank you again
Works for me with 2010 Malibu! Thanks for de video.
update. it's been almost a year and I've had no problems with the cruise control or brake lights.
Thanks
Are you still having this issue? I just bought an 09 Malibu with this issue and I did what you explained so far no issues
I called the Chevrolet dealership near me and told me this was a recall and they told me that this issue was resolved on my vehicle and opened it there was grease already in there so I took a small paint brush pushed it around and put it back
I have a 2010 and have to do this about every 2 years or so
Thanks so much for this!! Seriously I've had so many issues with this and every time I bring it in to the service center they charge me $300 for this...how dumb
dang that's not cool of them. if you lived in Orlando I'd take care of that for a beer lol.
Hey I have a 2010 same problem just did what u did and it worked till the next time I turned my car on did I not use enough?
Just unplug/replug several times and that should do it permanently
Thanks I just replace the brake light switch and was still having the same problem. I'll try this now
Did it work for you?
GREAT ADVICE AWESOME FIX THANKS BRO !
Thank you for the video. Very much appreciated
Will this work on an 08 Cobalt? I'm having an issue with the brake lights staying on

Update: that is the wrong harness. At least on a sedan. The top harness (j2) is the harness you need
"I need more hands' haha great video!

I'm not sure but maybe. I used dielectric grease from home Depot

So is there a recall on this now?

12 Malibu brake lights staying on when car is off. Looks like they must have done this fix at the dealership years ago, but it’s an issue now.
Hopefully more grease will fix it.
Great video it definitely fixed my problem
My car has the same problem. I pulled all the plugs and they had the grease on them. There was no visible corrosion on the connectors. I cleaned the plugs with electrical cleaner and still no luck. My brake lights do not work when the auto lights are on (all of them do light up though). cruise does not work along with the power mirrors and manual shift buttons. any ideas?
I would suggest a mechanic at that point.
could it be a ground issue?
This video is so encouraging! Dave do you think this will work with a 2013 Malibu?
I'm not sure as those have more modern electronics
Thank you it really works!
my 2005 malibu ls is doing the same. the brake lights come on randomly
did you find a fix?
with 5000 views on this video one can assume that 5000 people have experienced this exact same issue (never mind all the people who have not looked on TH-cam for trouble shooting steps to this issue). How has this not been escalated to a more serious recall in which the BCM must be re-designed and replaced!?
this car is over 10 years old, with the fact its a Chevy I doubt the warranty covers anything up to 5 years or 50,000k
@@DSR505 He said "recall" not "warranty". There's a huge difference.
Because In the service bulletin it literally tells you how to fix it and because it only affects vin numbers ranging for 2 years it’s not really presentable as a class action lawsuit. It’s a design oversight.
@@DSR505 learn to read
@@CorruptInfinityOfficial idk what this video is about its two years ago lmao
Thanks a lot man, you save me a couple of hundred
will this also make you not be able to shift out of park??im having this problem
Jeffery Sima Yes! long brake pedal travel to disengage the shift lock is a symptom.
Dave Cain ,,will buy some and try..havent noticed lights staying on..but just started problem with pressing brake and cant shift from park...changed the solenoid..still doing it
just got recall letter for this to take in now
in your description, you said "seems to be doing better", does that mean you have the same problem but just less frequently, or has the problem completely gone away after you applied the greese?
Jason Brown still no problem...
Please note the date the video was posted, and the update from three weeks ago. :-)
/and other comments.
hi, I'm having a issue where the traction light comes first then this issue happens. any thoughts as to why. also I did this. and its still there.
TheRedDevilHD I have the same issue with 2008 tho, i hope u can figure it out n let me know lol
moo0oody92 I ended up going to the mechanic. they replaced the traction control button cuz it was malfunctioning. and they replaced the brake light switch. It coated me $189 Canadian dollars. and the $113 for the diagnoses thing to figure out what the problem was.
lemme know of this helps. I think its better if u go to the mechanic and get it off your mind. I was stressing over 2 months with this but I can finally drive in peace.
update : the problem came back. it seems to come back in cold tempratures. this is super annoying
Followup. STILL GOOD! :-)
Worked on a 2010 too. Thanks!
I had this issue fixed by the dealership couple months ago on chevy malibu 2010. It took em awhile eventually it got fixed. Now my car was starting to do the same thing AGAIN. This is safety concern to me and i think that Chevy should adress this as a recall.
It is part of a recall.
I tried this and it worked for a while and started messing up again tonight.
Tried this again but not working. Still having to press hard to get the lights on.
Any ideas????
short in your wiring harness possibly. notorious in chevys
Brake switch?
Appreciate the video bro
GM Recall #:
N130036
NHTSA #
14V252
Date Issued:
May 14, 2014
Recall Title:
BRAKE LAMP MALFUNCTION
Recall Description:
General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in 2004-2012 Malibu, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6, 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles.
Safety Risk Description:
These conditions may increase the risk of a crash.
Repair Description:
Dealers are to attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and on the BAS and harness connector, and relearn the brake pedal home position free of charge.
No kidding. that's why my cruise control wasn't turning on. My brake lights are stuck on my 2009 Malibu. Hoping I can fix it myself...
Thank you so much for the video
After changing the brake pads the master cylinder and another piece you help me out with some electric grease
Thanks, gonna go give it a try
I could kiss you. Fixed my problem on my 2006 Chevy Malibu
Glad I could help :)

I eventually had to take mine to the shop.. there is a recall for this issue but it has expired.. it cost me $311... I hope this helps
the letter regarding this issue that i have expires March 31, 2018, it also attached a reimbursement form in case I paid up front for the repair.
My problem went away on its own but I did receive a notice from GM. I have video of my problem when it was happening I had to jiggle the key to get it out of park one hand on the key the other on the shift handle. GM will not admit it but I think the computer itself is defective
I love you for this video. Thank you lol
Final Update. Sold it in 2020. In 2022 I heard that the engine got busted. I'd have been confident to drive that from Miami to Seattle and back. 😞
Actually X2 connector is the one on top.
I have the same problem !
Ok i will do the trics
Thank You !
your fkn awesome dude ty so much....
go easy with the brush.
