    Maybe not being able to be alone in a room with a woman doesn't make you virtuous. Maybe it just means you have no self control. Healthy, balanced people, Christian or not, can stand being around people they find attractive without jumping on them. What's the point of willpower if you never face temptation?

      It's not entirely about self-control. Putting yourself alone with a woman you don't know is a dangerous gamble, as even the mere accusation of rape can utterly destroy a man's reputation. If it's someone you know and trust however, then that's different.

  • @KikiDiki

    If a man told me he wouldn't be in the same room with me, it would make me think that he had little confidence in his own self-control to resist mistreating me in some way. As if he had to restrain some constant urge to do something unsavoury to any and all women or something... Personally I find it charming when a man treats me like me and him are the same species.

    Personal pet peeve: don't get me wrong, knowing your boundaries is important, and yeah I'm all for abstaining before marriage, but...Idk, if you're not in control of yourself enough that you don't feel like you can trust yourself in a scenario where you have to be alone with someone of the opposite gender in any context...you realize temptations don't go away once you're married, right? Like, if you're a man and the breadwinner, you might have to work with other women? Or what if you have to go to the store and the only employee is a woman and there's no one else there?
    Idk but self-control is really important and I feel like that gets lost in emotionalism nowadays.

Seriously, there’s literally NO REASON why she’s putting herself through all these hoops for this creep-and you can’t even argue it’s like Edward Cullen where he’s just her best option. I respect Clay's pursuit of celibacy, but to go to such extremes to not be alone with another woman as to not even be in the same house as her just feels ridiculous. No normal person, Christian or otherwise, would ever do this sort of thing. What would happen if Clay ever found himself alone in an elevator and a woman suddenly stepped in to travel down a floor? What would he do?

    • @alexandervaldes7720
      @alexandervaldes7720 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @Dan Williams, I see your point. However, I think that Clay not being normal was a major point in this film. He was probably still dealing with his past. In the movie, the past life of Clay was pretty wild, even for a frat boy. What the movie seems to highlight about his past is his sexual history, especially his production of a porno flick. I have met a few people who have pretty bad past lives and it isn't easy finding a sense of normalcy. I can only imagine that Clay set these rules up not to keep him from getting physical with someone(although some of the rules do seem to have that reason behind them) as much as helping him keep his thought life pure. If you remove the distraction, it is no longer distraction. And, the movie also highlights that he was living with a sense of regret as well. That could also have been something the directors were trying to have portrayed. While I like Say Goodnight Kevin a lot, I don't think he did a great job with this one. The main point of the movie, I believe, is that our relationships should be glorifying to God and demonstrate his love and mercy as well as try to characterize his holiness. It is a difficult balance to maintain, but when I consider what God has done for me, it is the least I can do for Him. God Bless!

      +Alexander Valdes The problem is, their relationship doesn't embody the bountiful love, compassion, and glory of God. It is a one sided, controlling, manipulative mess. Clay doesn't seem to view Amber as a fellow human being, another beautiful creation of God, but as an object whose only functionality is being a good spouse. Clay went from one toxic view on women to a different toxic view on women, and his guilt hasn't made him any better than when he was doing poros. It's one thing to remove a phone from a room because it's distracting, it's a whole other thing to do that with a *human being.*
      The movie doesn't really seem to view this as bad, as he doesn't even really change by the end, proposing in the baby food isle, and dodging her lip kiss with a peck on the cheek. He doesn't really learn or grow from his dickery, nor does he really apologize by the end. He was ultimately rewarded for his terrible behavior. The girl fell for him despite his constant disrespectful behavior towards her, and she jumped right back into his arms after he showed just a touch of the attention she was so desperately craving from him, without him having to change himself really at all. In fact, making a big, romantic gesture to win back the girl that you drove away with your antics (especially after having shown little to no true affection towards her), WHILE still catering it to your own sensibilities, is the mark of a manipulative, abusive partner; not one showing mercy, holiness, or love.

    If you were to make a Christian film I think one of the best concepts is showing how human we are. Being a Christian is acknowledging our weaknesses and our need for Christ. If the intentions were as good as the actual execution, I imagine many Christian films would do actually fairly well. I just have to wonder why they don't.

    Honestly, being called a Christian alternative to Fifty Shades of Grey doesn't seem that far off. Both of them feature a male lead who is creepy and abusive (though a bit less blatantly in OF's case) but played off as quirky/attractive, and both of them horribly misrepresent the groups that they're supposed to be representing (Christians for OF, the BDSM community for Fifty Shades).
    The celibacy thing, for instance. There's nothing wrong with wanting to avoid physical intimacy before you're married. Heck, I've heard of plenty of cases where people don't even want to do things like kiss before they're married. However, refusing to be alone in the same room as a woman isn't just impractical, it's actually kind of terrifying since it kind of implies that you have so little self-control that you think you'll try jumping any woman you're alone with unless there's someone there with you. That's less "an interesting quirk that he might need to overcome" and more "Holy shit this man needs psychological help, stop laughing and call a professional." Also, it doesn't help that he continues spouting this rule despite frequently being alone with a woman. A screen door or standing just outside of a door does not in any way change that you're still alone together. This makes for both a creepy character trait, and a ridiculous extreme that reflects poorly on the character who generally represents the Christians in the film.
    Some of that might have been negated if, as you said, it was filmed in a way that actually made it clear that this wasn't a particularly reasonable or healthy way of thinking and actually had the characters make their big mistake at the end, reconcile, and find a balance between his strict rules and her (overly) carefree attitude. However, a lot of people who make Christian films (or even just religious films in general) seem to have this mindset of "This is a Christian film, so we need to be clean instead of having smut in our films like all of those non-Christians" that tends to drag their films down and either make them really preachy as with most of your reviews that I've seen, or just fail at delivering their message well as was the case here. It always makes me wonder if they're actually Christian, or if they are Christian, then whether or not they've ever actually READ their own religious text. Because most religious texts, the Bible included, are NOT very "clean" books. That's one of the reasons why their messages hold so much sway: With the exception of a few individuals here and there like Jesus, the figures in most of these books AREN'T wholesome and perfect. They're extremely flawed, make a lot of mistakes, and sometimes even do genuinely horrible things. Not only does this make them people you can relate to, but it makes it so much more inspiring when they DO end up learning from their mistakes, doing the right thing, and trying to be better people.
    If you want to genuinely make a good film representing the values of you religion you can't be afraid to make people uncomfortable, regardless of whether those people are believers or nonbelievers. If you just have your characters be perfect little angels who never make any huge mistakes and end the story with everything working out for them purely by virtue of just being good, then that's nothing more than ego-stroking. It's a way for people - in this case Christians - to feel like they have the moral high ground over others by reinforcing this image of people like them as just being above the rabble. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, of course. Sometimes it's good for people to just escape reality and live vicariously through a fictional character, because sometimes reality sucks and you need a break that can allow you to feel better for a while. However, that's how to make a good escape fantasy, NOT how to make a good movie that's genuinely representative of your faith and the positive qualities of those who follow it.
    Ugh. Sorry for the miniature essay. It's just that this film seems like one of the few Christian movies I've seen that honestly feels like it actually came close to doing everything it needed to be genuinely good, only for the way it was handled (especially with the ending) to drag it right back down again. I'm not saying that it would have been a GREAT movie, but it could have been far better if it had just been a little less over-the-top with the characters (or at least had both of them start compromising more earlier on) and been willing to risk testing its intended audience's comfort zone by actually having the characters make the big mistake at the end, and then forgive their mistakes and work through things together.

    • @GRANTMANFILMMAKER
      @GRANTMANFILMMAKER 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      This is one of the best mini essays I've read in a long time! :) Christian films push this idea of a moral high ground. Standing way above Hollywood. But the reason More people(Including Christians) go see "Secular" films(I hate how other christians use that word.) is because of the reasons you listed. Real characters, real flaws, real escapism. Most of my friends are atheists, and they're not these frothing-at-the-mouth hobgoblins these movies make them out to be. Are there jerks? Absolutely. But they're targeting the people who would never become christians, and simultaneously alienating people who might be on the cusp of believing. Hollywood is taking the ""Message over substance" stance more and more. If we as christians can put away our "Holier than thou" approach to filmmaking, and take the L.O.T.R/Narnia parable approach, we could really turn out some awesome stuff!

    • @ThatRandomEncounterGuy
      @ThatRandomEncounterGuy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      *slow clap* that’s some very awesome statements. If we had more people like you working in Hollywood and far, far less people like Ray Comfort, James Dobson, Ken Ham, Harold Cronk, Phil Robertson, and Kirk Cameron (not David A.R. White; best thing to happen to bad movies), then I think we’d be in a lot better place.
      It shouldn’t be about shoving God down people’s throats. It shouldn’t be about preaching a message with no characters, and the story just there to make this “me vs. everyone” narrative-you can’t hold majority rule AND be a persecuted minority. It also shouldn’t just be Jesus and God is awesome because it just is and that’s it. There’s more to Christian storytelling than “propaganda” and “pep rally for God”. I’m not saying this as a Christian (I’m more agnostic anyway) but I’m saying this because I believe that EVERYONE should be allowed to have good movies, tell good stories, and challenge someone’s ideas; in real life, nobody-NOBODY-has some “always 150% pure, sparkling Lawful Good” setting. Everyone has the capacity to be an asshole, but everyone has just as much capacity to be a good person so saying “my group is above you” is not an idea good people have, nor should they have. Nobody holds a monopoly on being decent to each other, everyone can be just as nice as they can be awful, we are all born from the exact same darkness and nothingness and we’re all destined to go right back in.
      This concludes my TED Talk-I would think a lot of this information is, like, super basic, redundant stuff but if it *was* redundant then we wouldn’t need to reinforce it.

He proposes in the BABY FOOD AISLE (cause he is subtle like that), and still only wants to kiss her on the cheek by the end. He is a downright unlikable character. I was actually disappointed they got married at the end, because their relationship seems so unhealthy.

    For a guy who doesn't want to be in a room alone with a woman, that scene where Amber purposefully messed up her sink to lure Clay in, he didn't seem fazed when she stood mostly in the house. I was wondering "Well, if you aren't saying anything about THAT, then why couldn't she just stay in the hallway or even on the stairs AWAY from him?"

    This movie is just so frustrating! Poor Amber was trying so hard to make a relationship while Clay just stood there like a lump of clay. And I don't know why she tried. Amber is cute and vivaciousness while Clay is dull, rigid and sanctimonious. And the scene where Amber asks if Clay if he finds her desirable and then he rejected her kiss really ticked me off. She let herself be vulnerable and he just brushes her off. I'm surprised that didn't get one of your patented "how dare you." And to top it off, he dares to judge her if she slept with the DJ Jerk? Clay is the one who left her feeling ugly and unwanted, which is what those kind of jerks take advantage of. If a woman like her was interested in me, I would be too busy singing "Hallelujah" to make her feel unwanted. Not that I would anyway. You can tell that Amber would be the one doing all the work to make their relationship work. Uggh!

    Most of the movies you review feel like the secular characters were written by the most extremely isolated amish or hutterite type christian who has virtually no concept of what secular people are like. And for the record I have met hutterites who have more of a clue about secular people then the people who make some of these movies. Old fashioned feels like the opposite like it was written by a secular filmmaker who has no idea what your average christian romance is like and is basing things on the more extreme example.

    I don't know, while this movie has honest intentions to a certain extent, I just think it is another and tamer God's Not Dead type. Plus, it acts as if the way he feels is justified. Just because you are a "good Christian guy" does not earn you the right to be loved in return. The movie seems to sympathize with his position but all I can see is a guy butt hurt because he doesn't see women as human beings, just objects that have to understand him and his rigid rules without him budging an inch for theirs.

    WHO MAKES THESE MOVIES AND THINKS REALITY WORKS LIKE THIS?! On one hand, in spite of the cringyness, I appreciate what they TRIED to do and it's refreshing that someone wants to stand up for celibacy and a more old fashioned way of approaching relationships, regardless of religion but even then people dated, kissed, held hands, didn't ask each other a million questions from stupid books or go to a marriage counselor on their first "date". A man takes asks a woman out, takes her to dinner, FLIRTS with her, TRIES to get physical with her (not anything extreme, like I said, hand holding and kissing). Goodness forbid he acts interested in her or pursues her in ANY WAY! Ugh. The cringe is real.

    Wouldn’t the self control thing only work when you’ve had sex before marriage? Because sexual urges are way harder to control once you’ve had an… enjoyable experience, which, if you’re celibate till marriage, you won’t have to deal with so much.
    Am I making sense?

    I disagree on only one major point, I know i guy who used to party like that, do every type of drug, steal, ect. But when he got saved everything radically changed, and yes he tends to be a more quiet person now, not quite like clay obviously and not nearly as legalistic of course but the point is it can happen and probably does. The rest is pretty much spot on though so good job!

    I never saw this movie, but dang it. I think I need to.... Anyway, from the clips, it looks like the guy is acting fairly normal for somone in his positions. He is depressed. He is mournful and angry at what he has done . He hasn't forgiven himself and because of that, he just slipped into a state of depression.
    Or it could be bad acting. Either or. :)
    And why why why did they not sleep with the other people? That would have made such a better message. Two people, who like each other, who stumble and have to forgive each other and themselves. But I guess we can't actually show christens stumbling or anything. Because showing a christian as anything less than perfect would be unchristian. *rolls eyes*

    • @saygoodnightkevin
      @saygoodnightkevin  7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      +610GARAGE it's amazing how Christians will forgo a powerful message, in order to make a movie "clean". Like, how can you make a cautionary tail, if there is no action to caution against?!

    • @610garage
      @610garage 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And that's one of the biggest problem with the christian movie industry.
      LOL What if Jesus was the same way.
      The story of the prodigal son.
      The son wanted what he thought was his. So he asked his father for his inheritance. His father gave it to him and the son left. The next day the son realized what he had done and came back home. The end.
      So Jesus, are you saying that when we become christians, we always do what is right.
      No, of course not.
      So what the point to your story?
      ...... WIne anybody?
      :) Hey, this could be a good video for you to do Kevin.
