One of many high points in JNTs run, the lengths they went to to disguise this before broadcast are legendary. I wish this sort of secrecy was still around within film and TV production today.
One of the best Cybermen stories, with one of my favourite Cyber designs. The transparent chin piece with the visible jaw moving underneath really gives you an unnerving glimpse of the small remnant of humanity that lies beneath. And let's not forget what a massive shock (no pun intended) this reveal was when it first aired.
Awesome return for the Cybermen as it'd been years since their last appearance in "Revenge of the Cybermen", which also had been years since their previous appearance in "The Invasion" (not counting cameos like "The War Games", "The Mind of Evil" or "Carnival of Monsters").
I didn't like the design of the Cybermen when they were brought back into the new stuff. I thought they looked too sort of 1920's Art Nouveau and clunky.
Truly one of the best stories made. This was the first 5th doctor story i saw as a 12 year old not long after the series came back in 2005. I'd love for the talos cybermen to return as these next to mondasan ones are proper cybermen. I've met Perter Davidson at a comic con and he is such a lovely guy to meet.
I find it really interesting seeing the Cybermen use robots here as opposed to some kind of partially-converted drones. It’s a really good cover for them.
I remember Earthshock was one of my first classic era DVDS years ago along with The Time Warrior, Revelation of the Daleks and the original DVD of Rememberance of the Daleks
I remember watching this on UK Gold? I was making my way through Classic Who stories and I was GOBSMACKED at this moment. Man, I love the Cybermen. Truely the most frightening villian I think (OK perhaps not these Cybermen but they are still epic)
Hot take: Nightmare in Silver. I personally like their stories a lot more than most people do, but also there are a few stories outside the TV series featuring them that I think are fantastic.
Oh, the Tenth Planet ones. By far the creepiest as they were far less robotic looking, and instead were as the concept - humans with part sof their bodies replaced.
Nightmare in silver is a brilliant reinvention of the cybermen, introducing what might happen when they upgrade to be near invincible! It also makes it seem like no matter how strong they get, the cyber men are always doomed to fail. @@radioactivecheesenowinnucl4746
Back then the Cybermen returning was a big thing because it was the days of writers creative enough not to make everything about them and the joke that is the Daleks.
@@FreeTheDonbas Incorrect. I simply did not feel the need to provide yet another copy of the exact same reasoning why a repeated comment is still incorrect. Ian spins these identical lies every single time, despite having been told more than enough times that they are not true.

I remember this on broadcast. They kept it absolutely secret and the end of episode reveal was brilliant. And the new Cybermen costums were great.
The new Cyber costumes were made by someone with your name.
@@adriansherlock3907 And did a lot of stuff for Gerry Anderson. Heh, it;s great fun when I see my name in the credits!

It can still be done but it's just almost impossible at times.

Best Dr Who viewing experience on first broadcast I ever had. Absolutely knocked my socks off.
In the days before the Internet, the *shock* was kept a surprise in Earthshock. These days Adric's death would have been leaked somehow.
this must have been such a brilliant surprise back when this was first broadcast
It was absolutely mind blowing! I ran down the street to my friend’s place to rave about it. The wait for part two was unbearable!
It’s great watching the reactions to this of people who are making their way through Classic Who without knowing anything about it.
The first time the cybermen were onscreen in 6 years. JNT made sure it was kept as a surprise.
Love these Cybermen designs and in my opinion they are still the best designs.

An absolute classic cliffhanger!
I like how the android can see them all crouched and doesn't shoot.
The second best cliffhanger during Peter's tenure as the Doctor.

Oh my gosh, that got me! 😂😂😂
Possibly the best of the Davison stories.
I got my earthshock cybermen figure in the attic also when the earthshock set came out it should have came with the adric and Tegan figure

"Excellent!"
My favourite Davison story. A classic.
I love the Cybermen.
ashad was not the first cyberman with emotions. it was these guys
Don't shoot! We need to wait until they're behind the rocks!
This is EXCELLENT
God, I love this story.
So good.
Brilliant story
I remember being so devastated by this episode.
That Android at the end had the Doctor and everyone around him in full view..but didn't kill them lol, the Doctor lives on.
Would you like a jelly baby?
The doctor just gets YEETED onto a rock. Lol. Sargent dead just went like ARRRHHHHH!!!
Nyssa is cute as a button. 😍
Ah the first classic Who episode I ever watched, free with the Sun newspaper, I think, loved the appearance of the Cybermen
