Mazda CX-30 review 2020: An SUV for when a CX-3 is too small and a CX-5 is too big!

  • When the Mazda CX-3 is too small and the Mazda CX-5 is too big, there's a car that perfectly squeezes in between them. It's the 2020 Mazda CX-30 and this is a review of the Mazda CX-30 G20 Evolve, which sits one up from the entry level. Is it premium enough to justify the price stretch above the Mazda CX-3? Paul Maric finds out.

I always thought the same thing about the new chrome fronts. However a neighbour hit my CX-8 and when it was getting repaired the panel beater said it made lift easy because only one side needed to be replaced.
That said, the soul red crystal is one of the most expensive paints to respray. The colour was originally only designed for car shows and was hand applied in a very specific pattern. But everyone would see the colour at car shows and demand it. In order to actually ship the colour, the factory first of all asked the Mazda Takumis in the paint department to be motion captured applying the paint. The painting system needed to be upgraded with new control software, which could replicate the exact motions of the human painters. This process was called Takuminuri (obviously the painting process done by a human Takumi).
It's the only colour at Mazda done this way. It's also the reason there are so many panel beater videos outlining the best way to actually paint soul red crystal in damaged Mazda cars.
But Kudos for Mazda for always thinking outside the square.

@@CarExpertAus no worries at all. Thanks for the very detailed video.
Forgot to mention though what a "Takumi" is. In Japanese, a Takumi is a high level craftsman who is mastering their art. The Japanese shy away from being referred to as a professional or an expert because that would insinuate they understand or know everything. Instead the Japanese believe that perfection not possible, and that every Takumi is performing continuous improvement through their entire career, working towards perfection. (Also refer to Wabi-Sabi)
A very different attitude to the west :)

      @@henryzhang2804 I understand your frustration.
This is certainly the exception and not the rule.
In this case the best thing to do is to put a complaint forward to Mazda Australia Head Office.
They are very tough on the repair centres and always put their money where their mouth is. They DO NOT NOT any severe faults.

I’ve had my cx30 astina soul red awd for about 3 months now , married with 1 toddler . This car is the perfect size for me and no problems so far . Only complaint is sunglasses holder is tiny and l can’t even get my glasses in there lol I use it to store other things. Overall I’m very impressed with build quality and performance, as far as visibility out the back goes I removed the headrests as they aren’t used anyway. I’m averaging 5.5 litres per 100 klms on highway and about 8 litres for city driving. I didn’t want cylinder deactivation but had no choice as I wanted the 2.5 engine , so far the cylinder deactivation is problem free and the change from 4 cylinders to 2 and back again is unnoticeable. I don’t mind the black cladding as when I go surfing I sometimes go down some shit tracks and if I’m going to scratch something I would rather it’s the cladding and not paintwork so this car is pretty much perfect for me but definitely won’t suit everyone

I had the same thoughts about the cloth seats so I went up to the touring model with leather seats and, can I just say, it’s worth the extra money. I feel like I’m driving a car that’s $10K more than I paid for it. Definitely the best of the CX range!

    • @ytlurker220
      @ytlurker220 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@User-cb4jm it shows that you really haven't done your research. In the latest 2021 WhatCar? survey in the UK Renault came halfway with 93.7% score well above Nissan, above VW etc. Peugeot has regularly excelled in the past few years for reliability. Also, Nissan shares a lot of electronics with Renault making their systems more dependable, and Renault shares engines with both Mercedes and Nissan. The Renault Kadjar in particular came 7th out of 28 cars in the family SUV category in that survey, with an excellent score directly on-par with Mazda SUVs at 96.9%. It's a proven SUV and the 2018 onwards Mercedes-Renault petrol engines add to its reliability. They're as reliable as you can get. Real-life ownership of new French cars has a negligible difference when it comes to reliability - that's the truth.

    Hi Paul,
Last week my wife and I picked up a brand new CX30 Astina model and we are very pleased with it. It has the 2.5 litre motor and that many safer features on it that are too many to list. Having watched your video I agree with generally all of what you said. It is a really easy car to drive but with the Astina model, at just under $50K, it is worth every cent. There are two points worth mentioning though. Firstly there is very limited leg room in the rear and secondly the rear window is way to small and does create a blind spot because of the head rests. But overall, being retired, it is a perfect vehicle for my wife and I to travel around in. If you can afford it, I would suggest to buyers to try and purchase one of the higher models such as the Touring or Astina models.

Actually I was in Mazda’s Hiroshima HQ last year for the mechanic competition (which Mazda Australia won) and some of the US mechanics were saying that from the feedback they give Mazda HQ in some cases to go from design through the factory and on to the street was taking as little as 7 months... but I really hope they haven’t taken brake pedal complaints to heart, because too hard wouldn’t be right.

I feel like that panel that meets the door like that might not sit 'properly' because of the way the door opens. If you recall when cars used to have that rubber (sometimes 'steel') strip along the doors, the end on the rear doors closest to the front was always slimmer due to the way the door opened and the need to leave space. Perhaps this is the same for this car?

Infact, the mx-30 has a 24v battery to assist fuel economy but returned worse. Do you know why this might have happened? As a consumer it kind of puts me off the mx-30 engine. Or can any owners here can you please comment on your fuel economy numbers on your vehicle's. Cheers.

I was wondering about that. I spend a lot of my time between family in Japan and Australia, so getting in and out of Japanese versus Australian models. So it's easy to spot the oddness in the JDM models.
In Japan in most cars, they have to completely change the head unit/screen. Japanese GPS units are vastly different (odd) and furthermore, something that I always found odd is that Japanese cars also have TV tuners in them. It would require a lot of additional work to make them the same, so more often than not I've seen the exact same screen/software in everything from Honda's to Toyota's to Mazda's. But it also makes the screen look at odds with the rest of the car.
The CX-30 is different though. In Japan it seems as if they are refusing to ruin their interior. But that would be at odds with the way Japanese interact with their GPS etc.
They've already spent years of time researching human interactions down to even the font they use. They've already poked fun at Toyota and Lexus at the fact they'll never have another digital clock using a different font in their cars anymore (take a look around a Toyota cabin and count the different typefaces). So I suppose the way they made it easy but re-use the existing international screen, was to add the touch pad to the rotary dial.

Had my CX30 G25 Astina AWD now for just over 6 weeks. For me coming from a Hyundai family. Im actually converted.
The non touch screen is so much easier to use and you can keep an eye on the road.
Negatives Piano black touch points on the centre console is annoying, Needed a wireless charging point.
Positives 2.5L is zippy and can be fuel economic.

I was hoping to hear about the driver's seat. How adjustable was height, and whether there was much lumbar support. You can buy a heated back and seat rest, but would the seat be comfy for a short woman with a bad back? All that brown leather in the Touring made the car very dark in my opinion, and leather gets terribly hot, which is why I I am considering Evolve. Sadly no test driving permitted in Melbourne.

The CX30 G20 touring is definitely on my short list but I just wish Mazda would loose that horrible gloss black finish on the exterior pillars and other areas. The material used is very cheap and nasty and is almost impossible not easily mark it during normal use and is the main thing I dislike about the finish, otherwise it’s a great car .

I love my CX-30, it's fun to drive (especially with a manual gearbox), confortable, and I love the design.
BUT, it's NOT the perfect car: it burns a lot of fuel, the trunk is smaller than my previous cars (Renault Megane and Nissan Pulsar), and the rear space is a bit too narrow.
Before buying the Mazda, I tested a Suzuki S-cross.
For short the Suzuki was way more practical, but it lacked the fun and look of the CX-30.

Actually test drove a CX30 today (in Thailand). Looking in that range for a vehicle to buy, but after the test didn't even bother after to go in and get the quote done. Why?
    1. As I'm driving along the headrest is continually hitting my head. 2. Getting in and out (after setting the seat position to my liking) I hit my head on the door aperture. 3. The steering is dead, it needed steering every inch of the way, no life there at all. 4. Driving along, see a gap in the traffic, hit the accelerator, wait, wait some more, then finally the engine accelerates, meanwhile the gap in the traffic has moved on.
On the plus side it's an upmarket feel inside and very quiet. However, not a car I want to saddle myself with!
