    A little bit of genre trivia. Lucio Fulci didn't have a permit to film on the bridge, so he had to do the scene in one take. Before the police came to shut down filming!.

      Plus these zombies while slow, do seem to be extremely strong compared to many of their fellow rottens. One crashed through a wall or a door to attack the cop. Another punched through a door to deliver some medieval eye surgery and another crushed Ian Mculloch's ankle with just a grip in the graveyard. No matter how well you board up your lair, they may just force their way in.

    • @JunoneMaster3000
      @JunoneMaster3000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Yeah. That kind of underestimation and jokey attitude is what made Roger die in Dawn of The dead.
      George Romero was aware about this kind of thinking and he represented that very well in Dawn of The dead.

    • @gunship4720
      @gunship4720 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Fair point about them not stopping. I always go back to the "sprinting zombies" and how that is more terrifying.
      Granted, in many respects, the runners are scary as shit.
      But, something slowly hunting you?? Thats downright horrifying. Sorta like how primitive hunters chase their prey to death. That deer may be faster, but it will be steadily chased until it gives up and dies.
      City? Millions of zombies? Even if you run and find a place to hide, you gotta come out. You were seen, zombies are aware of your general location. They congregate. You leave for food? Too loud? They will slowly make their way to you. And, with their brains solely focused on feeding, no other thoughts, motives, beliefs, feelings - every bit of what they are is to rip you apart, which means every ounce of what they are is put into their strength for the hunt. If one grabbed you, would be really hard to get out of their grip. Now try to run in a direction crowded by them
      Son of a gun, I am pretty damn drunk right now and reading comments about how they dont stop has really got my mind rolling. Never even thought too hard about this, I just always thought they would be easy - maybe so, maybe for the country folk. Really see it being a hard time for people in a city once shit popped off.

      That's a thing about old school horror movie zombies, they were slow shamblers and it made them scary. Modern runner types are awful. They were cool in the first Return of the Living Dead because they were legitimately terrifying, smart and able to trick people, plus they couldn't be stopped unless completely burned away or nuked. But when they crawl on walls like Spider-Man, as seen in the Day of the Dead 2008 remake, or claw and spit blood like in 28 Days Later (a.k.a. NOT ZOMBIES AT ALL), that's when the fast runner zombies suck.
      These zombies and the Romero ones are the best. The ones in Dead Alive/Braindead are cool too.

      Fear of the walking dead SE1 ep 1-3 was like that. In the Hollywood narrative, they weren't aware one bit about zombie or their tendency to attack/bite and all movies it's always like that. That's why early on in the series people kept going on about their day even with all the proof that a zombie virus was happening. Mind you that was in the 21st century with cell phones where they showed kids/adults watching TH-cam on their phones of what's happening around their city/world. And they still didn't believe it! In this time frame, you would probably have to see it to believe it. We all know the minute someone captures a attack, it goes viral and the world would end within 36-48 hours. Gov and CDC would have to respond within 5 hours of the first zombie attack. All in all we would be screwed no matter what reality you're in (fiction/none fiction)

      But even then thats only prolonging they inevitable as all it takes is for one person to simply die.

In other words, having a still image of the bridge and edit out the cars from every frame of the image, then paste the footage of the zombies on it. One example is the scene of 2001 Space Odyssey where the astronauts are walking into the underground facility of the moon.

This is a truly great horror film in my opinion, but please do not watch the uncut version of you are easily disturbed. I felt terrible for days after this, I am very sensitive. This was the original Italian dubbed version of the final scene:
    "The situation here in New York since dawn last Friday when the first appearance of these strange beings was reported is worsening rapidly, boarding on total chaos. The National Guard which has been mobilized by the governor is loosing control of the situation. In every borough, from the Bronx to Brooklyn, Queens and even Coney Island, more and more sightings are being reported of these beings that, in spite of the barricades, are gathering and moving toward the center of the city of Manhattan. The governor has declared a state of national emergency.... citizens are abandoning their homes and running. A large group of them are said to be moving across the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan. A group of these beings are said to be outside the studio... this may be our very last new bulletin....."

      As I say, I don’t think they had the money nor the time. Also it’s worth noting that the shot has been stabilised in more recent releases, in previous versions it looked a little shaky, likely a result of the quick shooting schedule and poor weather on the day of shooting. They shot the entire scene without a filming permit, which is what caused the issue with the cars in the first place. Therefore using a matte painting may have just not been possible.
      For further context, the film was shot in June and July of 1979, and released in Italy on 25 August 1979. The whole thing was shot, edited and in the cinemas within 3 months, which is utterly insane to think about, and just goes to show how professional the entire crew was.
      The film could have been a rushed disaster in the wrong hands. Thankfully that wasn’t the case!

      Perhaps. But personally I wouldn’t want it changed, partly because I’m so familiar with it.
      It’s the same with the Evil Dead, I’m quite familiar with the film in its original form without the CGI alterations made on the Blu-Ray to remove some of the amateurish goofs from early in the film. If I ever watch the film in HD and I don’t see Rob Tapert on the right side of the bridge, I roll my eyes, because I know he was there originally and they’ve just removed a really fun little error. It doesn’t take away from the film, if anything, it gives it character, but I can also see why Sam would want them removed.

If you don’t want that stop reading....3...2...1....Most of the zombies are just swaying side to side and not actually walking. Just a few of them are moving forward slowly for the herd to look thicker, but most of them just stay in the same place 😂 Honestly though, considering they had a very limited number of zombies and probably no permit, that’s very clever filmmaking.

    Trivia facts: Over 100 extras were employed to play the bloody, newly dead zombies walking across the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan. On that day, it was cold with drizzling rain and the extras playing the zombies had to keep themselves from shivering. Also, the fake blood had some ammonia in it to stop it from changing color for the appearance on film. When it dripped into the actors' mouths, they would spit it out when the cameras stopped rolling. All of the extras playing zombies in the New York Brooklyn Bridge scene were locals who were paid $40 per day. The director Lucio Fulci spoke very little English, his only direction for the New York zombie extras was "like . . . ah . . . this!" Although a national state of emergency had been declared and the local radio station had been overrun by zombies, notice how the traffic below still flows freely in both directions. This was due to budgetary constraints - there was not enough money to stop traffic on the bridge.
