  • Sharpening a Crosscut pattern handsaw is not difficult, but! There's always a but. Nothing is difficult if you know how to do it.
The key thing is visualising exactly what you're going to do. Thankfully, with the help of a cereal packet you can figure it all out. Taking the time to make a simple template is so helpful to make clear exactly what you need to do!

Crosscut saws are an essential in the shop. They make clean cuts across the grain. This is perfect for cutting the shoulders on mortice and tenon joints.
Learning to sharpen your crosscut saw makes sure your saw is in tip top condition at all times.

Very well explained video, just wish we re-sharpened more saws these days. A back saw is a good saw to start with and I agree a rip pattern is the starting point. I remember my foreman when I was an apprentice telling me to run a stone down the sides to even the teeth out, that really takes me back. Providing you take your time and try to get even pressure you are always going to improve a blunt saw, and before you know it after a few goes it becomes second nature. Well done we need more proper video's like this to properly educate new 'woodworkers'.

Thanks Gary. Hopefully a straight forward video like this might help people. I'll be honest, when I started work we sent handsaws out. Then I had one come back with such brutally set teeth it was unusable. That got me to pick up a file!
I asked one of the retired guys to come in and explain "how-to". He explained his method in 30 seconds and I understood none of it 😂. However, it can be learned. Start with a rip and I went from there.
      Thanks for sharing your experience!

Sweet, I’m always looking for how others sharpen their saws. Once geometry is mastered to some degree, it becomes more like any sharpening to folks and we all have our ‘own ways’ to some degree.

Very true. All the angles are a guide and not prescriptive. We all find our own path 👍

Just starting sharpening saw. I found it hardest to keep track of which gullets I'd sharpened. Magnifying glasses help a lot. I thought the setting would be awkward, but I found that straightforward. I've got a box of old saws, so plenty to practice. Hopefully I'll get better with each one. However, first it looks like I need to get cutting some cardboard.😀

Rob, you sound well on your way. Congratulations on your progress. Having some old saws like you do will be incredibly helpful.

@@faceedgewoodworking it helped me visualise it better than others have done. Sharpening crosscut saws is one of those deceptively simple tasks. There's not much to it but if you get any of it wrong you're sunk. I've made calves and cows out of saw plates. Now I just have to get some files. I've been looking. I found one place that wanted $19.80 a piece to ship them. Does the guy hand deliver them to my door?

@@1pcfred Agreed, it is "easy" but, as you point out each thing needs to be done consistently and well enough. I appreciate the feedback.

@@faceedgewoodworking it is easy when you know how to do it. Like riding a bicycle. But if you don't you're going to fall down and get hurt.

Another great video with a very clear explanation of the process. Am I right in thinking that if you sharpen each tooth facing away from you that will give the correct pattern? If any of your followers are still hesitant, I was terrified of messing it up but the satisfaction of sharpening a rip saw and getting a better cut was great and doing it to a cross-cut saw was even better.

Hi Eddie. Thank you for your generous feedback. You make a valid point but I find these things are best explained practically. Not sure if I have time but in the coming days there will be some more on this.
