    Wow, I just commented yesterday about modifying a gent saw to do something similar, but I'm worried about fitting the handle. Thanks to the TH-cam algorithm, I found out you've already made a video about fitting a handle to a saw, haha.

    I appreciate that when you were putting the plate into the back, you made a point of telling us how you feel you SHOULD have done it; (soft hammer on the back, instead of hard hammer on the plate) It shows us the thought oricess, better than if you had gone back and reshot, and edited, so everything would be "perfect". Watching the whole process, with errors, corrections, and all, teaches me far better than a perfect, no-errors sequence.

      That's what this channel is all about. Experimentation and fun. Finding the best way that works for the individual rather than the "best way." I like to show the learning process as I think people learn more watching other people learn. It kind of gets the brain running.

    Good going. Little by little I've been making my own tools. My dream is eventually to have a complete set of tools that I made myself including hand planes, chisels, etc. Of course, will build a special chest to house them all.

    Dayam James, those are some beautiful saws, especially love the burl handles, absolutely gorgeous. Have a "cheap" saw that I did a major reshape on the handle, but now you've got me thinking about making a complete new handle for it out of purple heart as I've got quite a bit of it.

  • @AllanMacMillan

    Those are some really nice looking saws! You've put a lot of effort into getting the details just right. Thanks for these videos, without guidance from you and all the other creators in the youtube woodworking community this sort of thing would be much tougher to learn.
    I recently finished making a 3d printable dovetail saw, which I'll soon be posting on Printables and Thingiverse. Cutting and setting the teeth was a challenge. Mainly just seeing the details was tough, mine was 15tpi, and I will be using some more powerful magnifiers next time I need to sharpen it. I did some experiments with your other method of marking out the teeth with a hacksaw, but my tooth pitch was too close to kerf of the hacksaw blades I had on hand, so I ended up using the file to do the marking and the cutting. I don't own a saw set, so I did that by the method Paul Sellers showed in a video where he used a punch.

      Making your own tools is satisfying. You don't have to make a whole saw all at once. You can start out by just making a handle for another saw. Then you can retooth a saw. Work up to it step by step. So far the closest I've come is retoothing a saw and making a handle for it too. I also made the sex nuts for it as well.

      That is the fun of a folded back juse a quick tap on the bact fixes the plate.

    Thanks James! I really enjoyed that. Why do you want to upgrade from your Veritas saws?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Veritas saw works well. But the handle leaves a lot to be desired. Also with a folded back you can easily adjust the plate and there's less chance of kinking it in the future. With the Veritas saw it pinned and glued in place and if you run into something the plate will kink easily. Veritas is fantastic for the price. But it's not a high-end top saw.

    Was that a power drill I saw?

  • @whittysworkshop982
    @whittysworkshop982 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Did you have to do much straightening to the plate after the back went on? I always drill the holes in the handle and cut the slot before I shape it, then it's not a huge waste if the holes or the slot goes wrong...... You're brave cutting the smaller through hole first 😆 Is that carbide spade bit good for drilling the plate?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      With the folded back I don't have to do much straightening at all just give it a good tap and it brings it right into place. Yes the carbide bit does wonders for drilling through the plate.

    What does the teeth setting tool do?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It bends the teeth to the side. Every other tooth leans to every other side. That is called set.

  • @cheryldawkins7486
    @cheryldawkins7486 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sharpening novice here. Do the teeth on a crosscut saw also get set or just rip saws?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Almost all saws get set. There are a few Japanese saws and any flush cut saws do not get set. But all others have set.

  • @lelandallen
    @lelandallen ปีที่แล้ว

    What if you don't have access to a saw that cuts a thin enough kerf in the handle for the saw plate? Your thinnest saw needs a handle!

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can always use the sawplate you're intending for the saw and cut the curve with it before you set the teeth. You can clamp it on the bench with something at the right thickness up from the bench and then move the handle back and forth across the saw to cut in the groove.

      @@WoodByWrightHowTo It's like having a friend who is a fruit dealer, but instead of buying your fruits from him, you buy them from his competitors. Cosman may not sell saw DIY kits and parts, but he may have preferred you contact him first. He may have provided the parts for free in exchange for a mere mention of his channel and or tool products.
