Only at 16:01 , so you guys may mention this later: the great spring sickness sounds like English sweating sickness, both describe patients as being well in morning and gone by dinner. It’s the disease that took Arthur, Prince of Wales, making the future Henry VIII heir to the English crown. Claire Ridgeway at the Anne Boleyn Files channel has a great video about it.

They've never figured out exactly what the sweating sickness was, either. A dominant current theory is some sort of Hantavirus, but I'm not fully convinced.

I always thought the GSS was similar to the unknown Tudor disease the Sweating Sickness.
Symptoms included a long fever, aches and pains, chills, vomiting, shortness of breath, and chest pains. The sweat was also known for its foul smell.

sweating sickness, the thing that killed henry viii’s brother arthur (the actual heir) and ran rampant during his life, of which he was terrified of getting and took quaranting very seriously, even when his wife got it.

The great spring sickness sounds a lot like the real life sweating sickness. It was one of those pop-up shop versions of a disease, shows up for a little while and then vanishes from history. It was big in Tudor England during the reign of Henry the eighth. You would wake up fine in the morning, then he would start feeling faint, and then he would basically sweat to death. Anne Boleyn actually caught it and managed to survive.

i would like to assert that grey scale is potentially a fungal infection. similar to cordyceps

  • @Rougarou99
    @Rougarou99 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

Another point in greyscale being a smallpox analogue is the fact that survivals of greyscale are often scared by the disease, just as in the case of smallpox.

Spring Fever sounds like it could represent the Sweating Sickness from England. Death usually occurred in the first several hours of symptoms showing, so people would wake up sick in the morning and die before night.

I think your SARS joke was probably closer than you think. To me, the Spanish Flu is the closest match to the Great Spring Sickness. Something that spreads really quickly. Something that usually takes a week or so to kill you (so that it can spread between major cities), but that can kill a healthy man within a few hours if the first symptom you notice is not being able to breathe.
We haven't known that the flu was almost entirely airborne until the last few years, and I think the panic and confusion that led Bloodraven to burn down a quarter of Kings Landing has a lot in common with a disease named after wartime propaganda.

The word "cancer" means "crab" in old greek, hence the name of the star sign; the disease gets the name because a dissecated cancerous mass has wrinkles (or something) that resemble the shape of a crab.
Dengue, zika and chikungunya are all transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, and they're all (but specially dengue) real pains in the ass down here in Brasil

100% agree that Varomir could potentially ride a dragon but... I still think its genetic.
The skinchanger gene, in my opinion, has been subject to a primitive form of eugenics -
    1) the trait was highly desirable, and thus deliberately selected for, in Valyria.
    2) The Faith of the Seven treats people with the trait as demons, while also providing lords with 'weird' kids a place to send those kids in the knowledge that they wont reproduce.
    3) Beyond the wall, where might makes right, the strength granted by being able to warg will allow a man to kidnap and 'marry' more women and thus spread his genes that way.
This to me explains the lack of skinchangers in the south - they're often killed or outcast, and heavily pressured to join the faith.

To add onto this, I dont think Warging powers are the result of a royal lineage, I think the opposite. That many noble families only attained their dominance over their local smallfolk because their founder was capable of Weird stuff.

I've had a theory for a while that Eurons bribe Gold is disease tainted in a " smallpox blankets" kind of plot. The timeline matches up that he would have been in the far East when the gray death was happening

What about a Hantavirus for the Great Spring Sickness? The main symptoms of Hanta Pulmonary Syndrome are a fever, headache, body aches, a cough, lethargy, and chest pain, and it can kill in as little as 2 days after symptoms are first presented. Various Hantaviruses are carried by rodents worldwide, though the one that causes HPS was first discovered in the Southwestern United States, not too far from where a certain writer lives...

Yep but they didn't know you needed to replace the salts. So they'd just give pure water and the person would improve, then die as their body was stripped of the salts essential for blood production and organ maintenance. Didn't figure this out till the 1800s.
It's why when youre really seating all day in hot climes you need to ensure you're eating salty foods as well as drinking loads of water
