      I've had budgies as a child, teen, student, and now as a 42-year-old. Somehow I think I will always get back to having budgies. Other birds have their crazy 5 minutes, they are crazy 24/7. As much as I adore other parrots or would love to have a cat, budgies just cheer me up like no other. Before I had my current flock I visited a parrot sanctuary. I loved seeing all the macaws, greys, cockatoos, caiques, quakers...but when I came to the corner where they had the silly little budgies going on with their busy budgie day I was laughing and smiling the most. 🥰

      @@murphychurch8251The only downside to having budgies is, there Short lifespan. :(
      On average most budgies only make it to be 5-6 years.
      With proper care & nutrition, you can usually expect 8 years.
      Anything beyond that is just magical.
      But I've heard many budgie owners saying that budgies will live up to 4 years as a minimum and every year after 4 is just a bonus.

    I know this has nothing to do with the topic but my son expressed a desire for an African grey. Never dealing with parrots before. He was watching Apollo the talking grey on TikTok. I researched the species on the net, as a preliminary. Began to watch TH-cam videos, came onto your channel here. After hearing about why an African grey would be difficult at best, I suggested we start volunteering at a bird sanctuary and interacting with the birds there. He said no. I decided for me, it would be therapeutic for me to interact with parrots at a sanctuary, but I have cats. I still want to volunteer, but it wouldn’t be fair to an African grey to adopt one, when I may not live long enough (I’m 53). I love the idea of therapy and volunteering at a shelter though.

      I had budgies when we were kids. Surprisingly a lot of the time the birds were attracted to me, kept landing on me. I have this effect on strange dogs and cats too, maybe because empathic, maybe because I’m depressed. I never pushed myself on the birds but made sure my presence was there. Eventually the birds would shake the cage door to interact with me, so I did. They’re so intelligent.

    These girls are so wonderfully caring about Blue!❤💙🐦 Blue couldn’t make it to your arm and would have fallen if you hadn’t caught him. How can you help this fellow’s flight or should you not bc this guy had balance issues which caused his crashing in the first place? Yes. Parakeets are underrated and so mistreated in pet stores. Thrown in a container and kids shaking them and no one correcting them, etc. Makes me nauseous to think what I’ve seen in pet stores. Had to go up gently to people and ask them to take care. Sweet Blue and these girls were so cute. Makes me miss my babies, Beau Blue and Silly Goose. Two blue parakeets and my best friends growing up.🐦🐦They said so many things, followed me around and were part of the family. Lost them (to their old age) decades ago and still miss them terribly. Just go slowly at first, and they are brilliant, loving, fun… My birds would never have stayed sitting on the cage. Would have flown right to my shoulder. Hope Blue can fly again without crashing. ❤yay! I’m so happy! Thanks for writing🐦❤️

    Sooooo agree with Dave. Budgies are sold at prices like they are some kinda living home decor. I think it’s unacceptable to have them at like $10-20! People will think that reflects the kinda care they require… when they are much more involved and intelligent pets than that price implied (like it’s a goldfish or something!). I really love how much your whole family loves the little birds and legitimize them. Ironically these parrots are probably the best suited for human companionship (along with other small species like parrotlets and cockatiels) but a lot of “bird people” even tend to treat them as lesser species. And that’s how so many big birds get rehomed!

    I'm trying to fall in love again with my Budgies, unfortunately their noise started to get me down, something I never anticipated, I knew they chattered and chirped but I have one young male who screeches so bad. He was abandoned by his parents and all his siblings died, so was hand fed by himself then came to me as soon as he was weaned, He is nippy and spends alot of time by himself when the other budgie and my green cheek want to hang out with us. I think he lacks social skills. Anyway he sets the other one off screeching and man it sucks. It started to make me feel sick with stress and I noticed some resentment and I started considering finding them a new home.
    I take good care of these birds though and the more sociable one is currently kissing me (kissy noises included) all over my face and I do love him.
    I just think I need to take a few steps back and work with them more, they are such fantastic, bold little birds

      @Joanie Dorsey - Oh my goodness, we have the same story!! I'm also fostering a rescue parakeet! Actually, I'm about to declare him officially mine now after 7 weeks of looking for his owner. I had just lost a budgie who got out when I had my grandkids at the house. In just a flash of a second he was gone, just like that. I still can't believe it. I've been searching everywhere for him while also searching for this bird's owner(s). I don't know how old this bird is since there's no leg band. I've named him Houdini because he's a real escape artist! He's not fond of the cage and (at first) really didn't like being covered for sleeping either, so I've had to improvise on a few things (night light, noise machine). I have no idea what kind of environment he came from. The first few days, he stepped up onto my hand, but I think it was because he was so frightened, he didn't know what else to do. Now he refuses, sigh. I have a lot to do to get him trained the way I'd like him to be. I also have a new budgie "egg," soon to be hatched & hand raised who will be joining us soon. I have to get Houdini Bird trained well enough to not teach the baby some of his bad habits (like escaping to the highest level where I can't reach him), LOL! I'm lost. I may have to call and get an appointment with Bird Tricks! Good luck with Sky! I'm glad she's doing well!

      @Joanie Dorsey - My Budgie that was lost was originally named "Blueberry" after the Blueberry in the Bird Tricks videos. Personally speaking, I’m not a fan of Budgies and can’t see myself ever owning one myself. I’ll be honest… I’m more into the beefy looking parrots such as Cockatoos, Macaws etc 😅
    But there’s no way in which I would underestimate their intelligence or value to the parrot/parakeet world. As proven they are absolutely underrated as an animal, and it’s unfortunately not many people get budgies with the intention of training them…

    Free to a good home is too expensive for some people. Maybe knowing how much care and training is involved and how much a good diet and ongoing veterinary care costs would deter those who won’t care for a bird. Outlining these costs in time and money would serve all birds better.

My other birdie is a male, and is currently being acclimated to the home, but he is much less scared but needs tamed is all. I'm seriously considering giving it a shot, your gentle methods seem like they would be the most worthwhile to try, and I feel like my female budgie and I got off to a rough start. That sounds like a just a content wing flap that birds do when they are relaxed. If you have any doubts though that what you are seeing is different then a visit with your avian veterinarian is never a bad idea.

      thank you so muchh, this was very helpful. it must be a content flap then, since he only does it before he is sleeping or when he is sitting on someone's leg for a long time. If I see other problems emerge I'll take him to a vet. Again, thanks alot.

      I had to go to the vet with a budgie when we had freezing temperatures. I prepared by putting the box with the bird into a firm shopping bag, on top of a warm hot water bottle (not too hot), then had blankets to put around. First I got my car heated up, then fetched the budgie bag with the blankets around until we were in the car and I could partially remove the blanket for air circulation. The most important thing is to make sure they don't get blown by cold wind.

      It depends on the bird. As long as your interactions are remaining posistive then you can hang out more. If these interactions turn negative then it is time to end the hang out session for now and try again later.

    I have a conure, Birdie, that was given to me because it flew off it's cage to bite it's owner's face. I've had it for 6 years and still can't get it out of it's cage because it attacks. I have to wear a glove to clean it's cage. My other conure is a darling, and I was hoping these two would be company for each other while I'm at work. I have their cages close together, but I'd never let Birdie get near Skittles. The woman who gave me Birdie said she'd heard the former owner's wife didn't like it and would throw things at the cage. Poor bird ! I give Birdie chew toys, and treats, and it accepts them happily, but will bite me if I linger. Any suggestions on how to help Birdie ?

    I have a very important question to ask I want a budgie so bad but my parents are still thinking about it (I’m 14 btw) what do you do to not get poop all over your floors when blueberry is flying around??? Please answer ❤

    • @ESLteacher62
      @ESLteacher62 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TinyToads - Once your budgie is tamed and used to his/her environment, I have found that they don't travel around that much. For example, I have a play gym on top of the cage where he can play and spends a lot of time on, so the poop goes directly onto the very bottom of the cage itself. He usually will want to be where you are, so I would get an old sheet and put it under wherever you're hanging out. That will catch most of the droppings. Then just roll it up and shake it outside until the droppings fall off, LOL! It's been my experience that they don't fly around all that much, so most of the droppings are wherever the bird likes to chill out. It's pretty easy to clean up.

    Help SOS!!! I just rescued a parakeet from a 7-11parking lot. I've had him since August 27th...I contacted local police and posted him to an online group that reunites lost birds, but no one claimed him and he has no leg band. I have gotten him everything a budgie should need...he has a cuttle bone, a mineral block, a bird bath(that he used once), he has toys and a swing(no mirrors). Everything was introduced slowly, but he doesn't play with toys at all, doesn't use the cuttlebone or mineral block. I am working on getting him off seeds however...he doesn't like anything except romaine lettuce and seeds. He doesn't like carrots, apple, banana, etc. and he doesn't like millet at all. In fact, he is afraid of millet. I have cut the sprig to the size of a quarter bc if I had a full or half a sprig cradled in my hand he freaked like I approached with a chainsaw, but still won't eat it. I heard you mention it could take months to get him off seeds. I have tried pellets and he tosses them aside. I have ground them up, and put them on lettuce etc. and he looks at me like I am trying to poison him. He becomes vocal and annoyed if I put the pellets on top of his seeds. If I put anything with his lettuce like another veggie(shredded carrot)he won't go near it, and looks at me like I have no soul. I also heard you mention to try to work with one bird at a time, but he only really makes noise in the house if he hears other budgies on my phone as I teach myself how to care for him(or if I put on Thor Love and Thunder, not joking, chirped through the whole movie) We have a huge screened in porch and so for the last part of summer he spent his days on the porch and he would sing and chirp etc. and nights inside. He is inside, where his cage was always placed, bc it's cold in NJ. Should I continue to work with him alone or should I get him a friend to teach him how to be a bird? I am home all the time so I spend everyday working with him and talking to him, and in the time I've had him he has adjusted to my dogs and my dogs ignore him bc they are older and don't care. We all sleep In the same room and eveyone is happy and peaceful. However, he can only come out of the cage when my dogs are locked out of the room(one of the dogs used to be a proficient bird hunter, and I'm not taking any chances). He gets fly time, but training him to come back without a treat is proving difficult. But my biggest concern is his dietary health. How can I reward him when the glory of all bird treats is millet and he looks at millet like a weapon of mass destruction? At what point should I be concerned if he doesn't start to take interest in food other than seeds? Any advice would be helpful. Thank you for the great videos it has really helped.❤🐤❤

      @Carolyn Fitzgerald - I just wanted to tell you that I also rescued a parakeet on August 30th (a few days after your rescue) and my new little bird isn't doing very much either. I tried to find
      his owner(s) but got no response, so I am now claiming him as my own. It can take a while for them to adjust. He's finally chirping a little when he hears other birds (on the videos that I play for him; he loves that), but he's still a bit afraid, doesn't play with ANY of his toys yet and has a long way to go. I just wanted to share that with you so that you will know that it's normal for them to take a while to adjust. Don't give up! He's going to come around. I had a budgie before I got this one. I got him from a pet store and they had clipped his wings. It took 5 LONG months for that bird to chirp, play or do much of anything, but once he adjusted, we had a great life together. I used to play videos from the "Kiwi and Pixel the Parakeets" TH-cam channel. My little Budgie learned how to say almost every single thing that Kiwi says. So, during those 5 LONG months when he was silent, he was listening to Kiwi and Pixel and learning how to talk (silently). One day, 5 months later, he started chattering up a storm, including saying a lot of the words he had secretly learned while he was silent! Ha Ha! The little stinker was holding out on me! Just give it time. Your new bird will adjust and be an awesome pet! I'm not trying to answer your question for "BirdTricks," but when I saw that we have similar situations I thought it might encourage you a little bit to know that you aren't alone and it sometimes takes quite a while for them to come around and adjust. We are just days apart on how long we've had our birds. It sounds like we are in a similar place. Hang in there! Good luck with your new baby!

Birds are very different than the aforementioned furry friends, but I am happy to have the opportunity to work with a pet I was never allowed to have bc my sister is scared to death of them( attacked by a goose as a child, can't blame her...don't put Ritz in your pocket around wild geese) Thank you for telling me your experiences and the length of time it took your bird to come around. I know it could take some time, but at least I have an idea in my head to not expect things to come along as fast as with my other animals. Thank you again this really helped me a lot. You should soundproof the room you have lessons in - it´s a terrible echo

    • @paulinemegson8519
      @paulinemegson8519 ปีที่แล้ว

      They use rooms at different venues. They’re not their rooms so they can’t baffle them(not soundproof- soundproofing means to mark impervious to outside sounds. “Baffling” on the other hand is placing sound absorbing surfaces to reduce/eliminate echo) Yes this room is echoey, because it’s big, empty and mostly hard surfaces. Sadly there’s not a lot they can do about that, other than to overdub a narration/voice track or maybe they could add subtitles cos it is hard to understand sometimes

      @Caylynne Murray - Have you tried music? These budgies seem to love having noise and they can't stand silence. Just a thought. When it's silent around the house, it seems like my budgie gets uncomfortable and nervous. Now, I almost always have some sort of music playing or something when I'm not able to give him attention, even if it's just the radio. His favorite music comes from TH-cam - one of the channels is called "Relaxation Music" I look for the videos that have birds sounds in them (with birds in the scenes) with the music and my budgie just loves 'em. They're beautiful! They show so many different breeds of birds - it's so amazing and the music is very relaxing. There's several that are 24 hours long, so those are the ones I play when I'm going to be gone for a few hours. It really keeps him company. It's been a lifesaver for both of us! I just prop up my laptop where he can see well and off I go! It's been my experience that when I play the 24 hour videos, you don't have those awful commercial breaks that pop up suddenly and scare the birds, so those are definitely my favorite.
