Tony Joe White - Tunica Motel

  • Tunica Motel is a fine example of swamp blues, the trademark of Tony Joe White. It's from "10 jaar het beste uit 2 meter sessies" (Varagram 1997). I've you want to buy this album: bit.ly/190Mjmz. 2 meter sessies, a dutch radioprogram by Jan Douwe Kroeske, asked musicans to perform an unplugged version of one of their songs.
Tony Joe White chose Tunica Motel, a song about a man who escapes the city, drives to Memphis to find his tranquillity in a motel which bears the same name as the song. At daytime he finds his comfort and rest but at nights he is haunted by regret and thoughts about the founding father of the blues Robert Johnson and his reason to sing. He reputedly sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads.
Will he ever sleep? Can he resist the alluring Crossroads? Will he walk the path of virtue or will he go astray and fall into evil ways? Tony Joe White puts us at the Crossroads with Tunica Motel and whilst playing his gritty, dirty and muggy blues, he's waiting for answers. So do I.

    Monday looked like a downer
    Tuesday looked like rain
    A bad altitude
    And I knew I needed a change
    Head out on the highway
    Cruising way down south
    I knew a little place
Where I might could work it all out
I'm so tired of fighting with myself
Gonna spend a little time at the Tunica Motel
Just outside of Memphis, Highway 61
Sleepy little town down by the Mississippi river
I'm gonna layout on a houseboat
    Until my hide turn brown
Ain't gonna move 'till the evening sun goes down
    Fried chicken to go
And they got live bait for sale
Anything you need at the Tunica motel
    I find myself at midnight
Moving to the back porch blues
The guitar cries, telling me about the hard times
    Something moves in the shadows
    Giving me a little chill
I thought I saw Robert Johnson
    Walking out across the field
    There ain't hardly nobody
Left who even knows the tale
Gimme the blues at the Tunica motel.

I was in Tunica yesterday... Still a sleepy little town as long as you don't go about 12 miles north! Had a friend that retired to Tunica so he could be close to the casinos. Eat the buffets and drink the free booze! He died last year... Not a bad place to die, quiet and slow. Better there than Memphis or Atlanta or some other rat race town.

Hi mouse man, here we are 5 years up, after the flood of '11, the crash of '08, Memphis rated the best place to save a dollar, by Consumer Magazine, yet never much been there, only flew in drove out on my way to Tunica. Sure do miss Nashville, yet to be sure, the town has needs, if the willing are able, then we can turn the tables, so to speak, one of the worst of the poverty ratings also, Tunica, has auspicious amounts of casinos, haha, and the mighty river flows, the barges keep the consumer in supply, the river lives much better than we can justify, considering all what we done to it. I was at the Fitz, a little TLC and you'd be happier with the region. It suffers a despair, thick as oil it stains the air, yet I do love the region, the folks there, very kind for just a joke and a smile, Atlanta, is a fine town too, such an efficient airport as it is known for, when I visit Atlanta, the 'burbs of it, what is it- Murietta, just calm and green yet the best (& I know from Europe to NYC, to growing up in "Little Italy" that the best...) Veal Parm I ever had was in the Airport Hilton, I was late and had a few good jokes, after a client gave his whole pitch in the car ride, late, and closing meant I had nothing to eat, so my buddy Jose, was drinking Dewars and dropping big tips, asking them to wait, and they said I had a great friend, yet so obnoxious, they said, laughing, "so Texas-ass" and it was the very best veal parm I've ever had, they served me a huge portion as they closed, refused my money, refused my tip, (I left the cook and the gorgeous waitress very huge tips through the mischief with the Concierge, see it was late, I don't pay for company, and yet with Southern Hospitality, she did not let me sleep alone. Later I learned that Cookie was not the concierge at all, yet she did make a point to pay the restaurant, all the tip, so much kindness). So I had great tales of Atlanta, except the client wore a big rubber nose and floppy shoes, so business was at a loss... and Memphis I dunno, yet Tunica needs a tune up. I am working with a group that may just belly up to the bar and make a major play. So far, it has been a struggle. People do not take this all so seriously as it is. The buffets are awful I starved the best being a chicken drive through and not Popeye's, (GOTTA LOVE POPEYE'S CHICKEN, try the rice and beans with gravy, good stuff, they got to nicknaming me the Gravy Man up in the Food Courts, and Concord; love my Popeye's & yet none in Tunica, Mississippi or Tennessee for me, and no sushi, only that ill smelling buffet, even the roadkill stew had live eyes and the lemon catfish were baiting the toothless, food that fights back, food that still bites back, sharpen the forks, if it moves stab it, if it lives -kill it and my X used to say, "go be with your Freckles and Bambis, just bring 'em home so I can kill 'em, cook 'em, eat 'em she's dangerous according to the court, has to stay 1,000 miles away, truly an indication; and I gotta say, so many good folks, just plain folks, and a dreamer with a cool vision, if we can put the right numbers by it, this region will have a positive change.) I don't gamble, yet when my clients own casinos, they are prone to force a chip or 3 on me, and I have gambled 3 times and won 3 times, $13.50 on the horsies (I hava a system- chaos) and then $42- on the one armed bandit in Tahoe, I was in a body cast and hanging out alone, while my brother went to ski, so I immediately went over to the Ponderosa, rented a ski mobile, Vrooom, crash, crawling out of the wreckage, I lost the path, when they saw I was in the body cast, they gave me back my money so I got $42- worth of munchies, frothy stout, some suspect company, her name was Alice and she had malice in her p-p-palace, uh- and really stoned, and I won $30,000- on my second honey moon at Bellagio. We had business eating caviar, woulda cost us a month's rent and my real intense intent, to wrap up bz and go with my leggy honey to our Nobu's feast, where the give me the large wooden boat of sushi, sashimi and every trimming you can imagine, tobiko and when I dropped my chopstick, my honey was in a short mini-mini-micro-mini dress, commando, handy and all set up to trick and trap me. In fact, so you know the code, the name of Loudermilk when combined with a hyphen and any first name begins with "S" means you just ordered a very expensive uh-specialist, which as I said , i don't do, yet my then-honey surprised me, and all that money, it had no impact compared to the indignities and abuses my husbandry vows and duties compelled me to only try so hard to resist. That was a loss, when she went back to her brothel, leaving our son, our cat (Gato Diablo, the carpet shark) and me, perplexed, in total chaos, and so much more happy for it, the surreal takes no impact away, SO a free man I am and in Tunica, there are many many sweet women, some working some wishing, cat -fishing, I could hang out there a few. Hoping to pump in some improvements and a better face for it, yet the photos in the video, really still perpetuate, was there a few weeks ago, and we have our motors running in this one- a live prospect and hope. With some TLC and some adwork, Tunica can become a whole different place. I am helping all I can and all I want is a Popeyes in the Memphis Airport, another on the way to Tunica, and another in the resort itself. When I asked for room service, she came naked in a robe. So I rented her car, and snuck out to drive through, 2 meals in the drive through, and I danced with Cheri, (her real name, I can only wonder, she don't know mine neither,) and we had fun, yet no fees were accepted, when the confusion was so funny, we ate chicken watched her computer to see RED SPARROW and we made our own atmosphere, shame is we would've spent a lot of money there. I also was taught to shoot craps and play 21, won $11 at the dice and $8- at cards, though I think my hosts were frustrated, at least it wasn't so bad as Bellagio. For any dollar I win, someone bets $1M more !!! Chrissie are you transcribing this ...honey stop your fun and come have some Wonton Soup, maybe we can go to Naka's next week! Mr. Naka, likes to shake his big knife and scream "Yabba-na!!!" and they give me a whole eel on my nigiri sushi, a whole darn eel!! Stop tapping keys, Chrissie, oh honey don't grab me there, wow, strong hands, hey stop tapping keys, damn broke my zipper, darling want to go with me and see Tunica, what? later, oh yeah, why are you... damn woman your nails are sharp! Don't, ok then...
Hey whew, that was, unusual, play Conjure Woman... stop tapping keys Chrissie! Cristina! Cristina Maria Augustanacio, ok then don't behave! You can tuna fish -you can't tune a cat and Chrissie, darling you are one sultry, playful dangerous cat, what video, dance, the Tunica shuffle, oh yeah baby I know that dance, layered me in layered me down, it is her playground, I'm just expensive equipment...
      LANCELOT’S DILEMMA
      She’s pretty and she’s mean,
      And her sister Madeline-
      Been on me like a hungry wolf;
Says I’m more fun than golf!
      What does she mean:
      “A hole in one.”
Anita; hot gal has this cousin,
      Harmony’s her name,
Won’t be tamed, her wild soul!
      She claims I’m her
      …Totem pole.
      What’s a po’ boy s’posed to do?
      So I’m hiding here with you;
      With a rack
      Of Adam’s ribs,
      Behind this barbeque!
      Oh, yes…
      I should introduce you too-
This here is Maddy’s gal pal, Sue!
Hey girl, this ain’t no joke!
      Uh oh, my zipper’s broke.
I woke up in a pool chair,
What the fuck is goin’ on here!
      My zipper’s stuck again,
Try and find some head above my brain.
      Of all the public places,
To be jammed in Stacy’s braces!
      Flock a starflocker, star;
      Flock a star…
      Keep the towel boy!
      Throw me the Kevlar!
      Flock a star, flocker, star…
      Flock a star!
      Throw me the flocking Kevlar!

This is me, really just me, and I'm really sorry about your friend, Tunica can be a place of rare peace. Have to see about the "12 Mile Factor". I heard this video less than 1/2 a year ago, then don't you know, a job takes me there. I had never heard of Tunica before. I like how the river is so powerful, and how it feels so calm. Be well, mouse man. ~RaVen~

Robert Johnson was playing near Greenwood during the depression a harmless flirt he was enthralled with his friend a beauty who came to hear him play. Sonny Williamson who was with him said, friend your drinking to much. Naa ! So he continued to drink a large amount that night. Next day he fell ill and over the next three days he got worse finally going into convulsions. He stopped breathing & died. His symptoms were consistent with acute alcohol poisoning. The whiskey was moonshine.
