Why China’s Three-Child Policy Won’t Impact "Leftover" Men and Women | Gen 跟 China

  • VICE World News’ latest series, ‘Gen 跟 China’, is an insider’s view of the country as it navigates a post-pandemic world. In this third episode, we discover what “leftover” millennials think of their single status and their place in society, as well as why the government has introduced a three-child policy.
    The term 剩女 (shèngnǚ) has become pervasive in Chinese society over the past decade. It translates to “leftover women” and refers to unmarried females over the age of 27. These women usually live in the big cities, but there is also a subsection of males in the countryside who are also “leftover”. These are the extra men born during the country’s previous one-child policy. Can China’s single millennials catch a break from the government?

    Let's be honest, marriage has lost it's appeal to most women globally. If you're able to support yourself, indulge your interest, and are indifferent about having children, what's the point of marriage? People like to say that unmarried women will die alone but statically, women tend to out live men anyway...dying alone is the reality that most women will face regardless so why bother?

If they take these leftover men from the rural areas they are expected to move to that rural area, take care of the men's parents, take care of the household, farm, and raise a child... women like her who bartends & produced music for a living will definitely not be happy with that kind of lifestyle.

      @@iknowyouwanttofly This is why the one-child family failed them so bad. In their culture the women are married off and the men care for the parents. It would mean the couples who prefer girls would be at a disadvantage in rural areas. They'd marry their daughter off and have no one to care for them. One of the solutions would be to combine the families, but that would be a nightmare for the man who will need to provide not only for 2 sets of parents, but also to his own family.
      This must be why most females are moving to the city or were born there. They can have their own careers with better pay than most of what they could've gotten in the rural areas (unless they start a TH-cam/Weibo channel like Li Ziqi).

However, men would likely (especially from the rural areas), be more abusive and sextually biased. Simply because their environment isn't as educated as in the city. For example, they might think it is natural for the wife and her family to not only provide for his family, but also do all the housework, obey his and his family's will, have babies the time he wants with his last names, and do most of the parent's work. And really.... have a chance to hate your daughter from being born. Why would any educated women (or anyone) accept that deal if they can simply live better and have more choices on their own.

Maybe some won't be getting married or have kids at all. Society can pressure and insult the millennials all they want. It won't matter because the change has been happening. In my country, average middle class house is $50K, but minimum wage is barely $300 a month, my senior with a diploma (she decided to postpone her study due to mental health) get BELOW that. ive been telling her its illegal, and she is being used. But its so hard to get a job she just put up 9AM to 6PM everyday, for six days a week, for below minimum wage.
      My dad works for the government, in fairly high position. And his monthly wage is $1500, while my mom, works for the government too, albeit with lower end, got around $750 a month.
      Our house is $50K. Arent that just insane??? After they retired, we can barely make end meets.

      It's coming from a rural man so think from his point of view. What he meant was if a woman is at a marriageable age and choose to not married then they'll be seen as too demanding for ignoring those who wants to be with her and expecting something more. That's was his point. People in rural areas don't always get married out of love or status, it's more like a robotic routine where they need to procreate to maintain the legacy/generation.

    • @kowalski4130
      @kowalski4130 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      The point he is trying to make is that if a man is not married by 30 its because he never got a chance with a woman and so will have to work harder for a higher income to attract a woman, but if a woman is still single by 24 its most definitely by choice as she most likely rejected all the men that approached her cos they were not good enough, a woman is single by choice whereas a man is single by force, women have way more options for dating as men are willing to compromise and accept a woman who is not perfect, whereas a woman is shallow as f*ck and only cares about good looking men and money even if the women herself is not good looking , they all think they deserve a high quality man even if they are not high quality women, for a woman to get a boyfriend its as easy as shooting dead fish in a barrel with unlimited ammo but for a man its like going through hell unless he is good looking , as all women value most is looks. you could try it yourself, put a fat woman on tinder and you would get thousands of matches and put a fat man on there and you will get nothing , just shows how easy it is for women.

      Right. Men are just mad that women can take care of themselves and choose to be happy. Women tend to pursue self improvement far more than men do. Then men complain that women don't want them because they never had to compete for a woman's attention. They used to have arranged marriages and their parents took care of everything, then their wife took care of the kids, house and parents. They don't even know what to do, and blame women.

      Birthrates/population is kind of like running downhill, if you slow down you fall down the hill and break every bone in your body. People get older and stop working, stop contributing to society, to produce enough for everyone, the more non-workers you have the more workers you need. If the aging population continues to grow (people living much, much longer) and the number of young workers keeps decreasing then a society won't have what it needs to keep going.

    • @si91
      @si91 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      How exactly are the men supposed to do that? They now have to compete with women for jobs and education. It's hard to compete when you double the number of applicants without increasing the number of spots.

    • @AltruisticWarrior
      @AltruisticWarrior 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ain't quite that simple. Women are increasingly the preferred applicants for many non trade jobs because they'll willfully work for less and the bottom line is all that matters in corporate America. Plus, diversity sells good to the customer and public. So unless men want to start working even harder than they do for even less, it's going to be a problem. As far as I'm concerned, we're headed for a race to the bottom. Not everyone can be a lawyer, doctor or CEO nor should they be. Hypergamy is also increasingly a thing amongst women now that they are taking on the role that men once did. I suppose we're at a crossroads. Men could also act as a stay at home spouse if there are plans of children but much the same, more women don't want children. So I can understand why some younger men in particular are feeling the pinch. I'm lucky enough to have a rare niche job that makes roughly 60 an hour but it's sad what I see around me.

This is so impractical and unrealistic considering a person finishes his/her bachelor's degree around 22 and will have to start as an entry level employee while having to spend those small salary for rent, food, transportation and utility bills. By the time someone reaches 27, if he/she has lived an independent life who has to pay for everything, you barely saved enough money nor own a house. And you want them to get married before 27?!?!?? Most of it is to do with bonding issues, wo^man who are in late 20s would experience multiple sex partners which eventually lead to negative experiences. These type of woman lose the ability to have healthy and stable relationship. Most men do not want to deal with this. Wo^man are ruled by their emotions, especially in romantic sense. They become broken record, unable to play the sound of healthy relationship. They adopt feminism etc which leads them to be lonely cat woman or one night stand queen, who hates all men. Hence, a woman should invest in her youth to find healthy long lasting relationships instead of eventually becoming broke. There are only 3 things a woman need, youth, modesty and someone what attractive. For a man it's different, he needs more than that, that takes a lot of work. So why after all that would a he want a broken relationship? Wo^men need to be raised correctly and given healthy advice about life. Their beauty fades quickly and life becomes harder, so secure early.

    Once again their government is shooting themselves in the foot again🤦🏻‍♀️. Do they really believe stigmatizing leftover men and women would pressure them into getting married?? All they’re succeeding in doing is to isolate them even further and make it even harder for them to attract a potential partner, or turn them completely off to idea of ever getting married.

    That lady has a point if you force people to marry young when they/if they dont have a clear idea of themselves they will divorce and even delay getting married again. I get that they want to help rural men with social "modernizing " skills but who knows of they would be open minded to a wife who more independent and may not want a kid right away or expect her husband to also help her with house work and child care equally
