I can see why it started 1969 or there'd have probably been an entire decade of Beatles being at the top.
Elton John was #1 for only two years: 1975 and 1998. Hell of time difference but I'm pretty sure that Princess Diana is why he reclaimed it very briefly.

Maybe its just me getting old. But for me, the late 90's is where music took a big downturn. Way too many boy bands.
Me too. Most of the music from then on sounds the same. Nothing new.
I'm aghast I did not see any other metal bands like Slayer or Megadeth just to name two, on the list.
I'm surprise Metalica didn't make it to the top, and where was Nirvana?

Its not interesting , its just that today music is made on an computer and you need one microphone for vocals , back then you needed to record the music as well.
Very interesting. I'm surprised neither Cyndi Lauper or John Mellencamp made it onto the list. They got very high radio rotation back in the 80s. Also surprised (pleasantly) to see AC/DC hold station for so many years.
Amazing that Elvis Presley stayed on this list for 9 years after his death. Now that's staying power. Also Elvis would have been on top from the mid 50's to mid 60's.
It's not an aggregate list of all sales, but represents sales as they rose and fell for each artist. The Beatles don't actually drop off the list until 1984 which shows that people were still buying their records 14 years after they split-up. The boom in CD sales in the mid-80s and other formats such as streaming has helped more recent acts reach a wider audience quickly which would explain their higher level of sales. When I was a lad we used to have to get the bus to the next town over if we wanted to purchase the new single release of Wayne Fontana... now you can download or stream the track from various online sources. Or find them on TH-cam. Also, the fact that these tracks are now available on the internet means that they sell around the world almost instantly.
If this chart was based on overall sales, I am sure both The Beatles and Elvis would be sat proud at the top of the list as they have done since their hey-days.

I knew the names of almost all the old artists but never in my live heard of Garth Brooks. Expected more difference between top 3 and rest, really close. In recent times I thought Rihanna and Beyoncé were about as popular, but guess not. I expected many to be bigger (Tay Swizzles), smaller, on there, not on there, totally unexpected results.
I know a few kpop artists, I thought many would be bigger, like several bb and blackpink, and I assumed Psy just had one hit, but he keeps selling?!

I think that the list doesn't tell much about the artist themselves, but rather it tells more about the cultural shifting in this long period that it covers.
So is this year by year or cumulative? What do the numbers mean?

Some numbers go up or down constantly, others stay fixed a while, is that with monthly data for some but not all?
I believe it is album sales. Every time someone drops an album their number spikes.
II find it hard to believe that the Jackson 5 was NEVER on the list 1969-76
And the Bee Gees weren't on the list in the late 70s. The disco era was HUGE for them, in America and everywhere else.

Who the heck is garth brooks, lil wayne and Shania Twain or Jay-z and so many other names after 2000? I had other names on the list. What is so special about Eminem for petes sake? But i am not from USA, so meh.

Lil Wayne destroyed the music industry in 2008 and he was on a decline this year. And I haven’t heard of wiz khalifa in 6 years. I legit think he retired so I don’t know why he is on the list to begin with let alone going strong in 2021/22
