    Something I noticed awhile ago that fits in with this. So those clock things on everyone's weapons are all at exactly half for everyone, and (I don't remember which is which) what half is glowing is different depending on what country they are from, like the Keves side is on the right and Agnes is the left (I could be wrong on the sides, but it's something like that).

    You brought up Ys VIII in terms of character switching mid-battle, but FFVII Remake is also a good example as well. That game actually heavily encourages you constantly switching up which character you're controlling and utilizing their ATB Gauges to directly command the AI-controlled party members on what to do. Just the ability to do those things would greatly benefit Xenoblade's combat system.

    I really like your interpretation of ouroboros. Plot wise, when Melia says "Ouroboros abhor this world", maybe our party really does hate the world, or at least the state of it. All the war and endless fighting, maybe our party is trying to get rid of that, but for some reason Melia and Nia want to perpetuate it/keep it like that.
    It's also pointless fighting/brainwashed fighting too, as Mio says she's "fighting because there are enemies to kill". This is before they are allies and indicates that the fighting really isn't reasonable. So Mio and everyone might be trying to "wake everybody up" the same way she has

    Torna combat may not be the most customizable, but it is the fastest flowing and most fun system. It is more action focused. I disagree that it wouldn't work in a longer game. If they went even further in the action direction with it with swap timing and such it could easily be deeper. For example like character action games. Having a weapon swap system would be enough even if they had preset moeveset. And a power up state like a devil trigger/ouroboros trigger. People are often willing to put time into character action games from how fun and engaging chaining attacks can be and comboing and I feel Torna has a similar vibe that with a few tweaks and improvements, could fill a similar niche of like character/weapon swapping for combos.
    For example what if they went like Torna but you can swap between all 4 party members. So you could manage positions and attacks.

    • @justice8718
      @justice8718 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Imagine if bosses had desperation moves that stops the momentum of overdrive, driver combo cycles, and chain attacks. And, the enemy proceeds to buff themselves with stuff like Monado shield, sudden enemy waves (while cooling themselves down), huge AOE debuffs, or 100% invincible attacks. They can also require more quick time driver-specific events (the player himself needs to either topple, launch, smash, or break in time) to prevent them from taking out the player, buffing themselves, or debuffing your entire party.

    Interesting to see how different people can see different things in the combat systems. Comparing XC1&2, I never thought 1 was slower at any point, I actually preferred 1 greatly, it felt a lot more interactive between managing aggro, visions, monado arts, and tension. To me, XC2 felt like you were aggressively doing mechanics at an enemy until they died, which I didn't like as much, even if it gave me more options with how I chose to do it.

    • @embrcelica
      @embrcelica 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Thats honestly a pretty interesting take. as someone who likes both styles of combat, i think that xc2 provides significantly wider range for optimization and interactivity while xc1 has smaller options, but made the process a lot easier to digest. Aside from tension and monado arts (the latter of which is an integral part of xc1 as a whole), xc2's combat largely encompasses what xc1 had in just a single blade's kit. Its obviously personal preference what types of systems you prefer to manage, but ultimately it comes down to whether you find xc1 way too lax, or xc2 way too dank.
      Overall, i think what i can safely say is that for a new player or blind experience, xc1 is more accessible with its simple and/or trivialized systems, but also in my opinion suffers from an identity crisis as a lot of what it has going for it pales in comparison to actual mmos its combat is based off of. I think xc2 is a lot worse for the new player but has aged significantly better in this action-oriented game industry, and has really come to its own and is more suited for end-game content.
      For the health of the franchise and xc3, I really hope they go towards xc2's direction, but it would be in their best interest to make it more digestible from the get-go.

      1. Xenoblade Chronicles X
      2. Torna
      3. XC 1
      4. XC2
      The former two games have fast gameplay, and the latter two are slower, but I feel that 2 has the slowest battle system of them all. 2 is definitely the best in terms of content and customization, but I think Torna is much better in terms of the actual gameplay. I love how it combined the best things from 1 and 2's battle systems.

    I really feel it should be more Torna like but more customization with weapons and character set ups. Having 4 on the field but each has a partner that supports op them like Torna so basically 8 on the field and switching too. Maybe we get 10 total members of the main cast to choose from. Also, each character has 2 weapon styles like Lane has a sword and shield mode we saw. This can lead to insane customization and combos. But I hope they do what DE and give that ! on arts icon when it would help, so useful for positioning and maybe have a similar art pallet amount. Lastly, I think they should have arts look similarly to 1/DE where the effects are color coded for better visual ques and what each art does instead of looking at text

  • @RellekEarth
    @RellekEarth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I had a theory about this as soon as I saw Lanz use his sword as an actual shield as well as the general nature of shield hammers being shields and hammers. Each character gets 2 modes with multiple arts for each and then the obvious link where 2 characters linked creates an oroboros which we don't know the exact extent of yet. Having two characters pair up is like Xeno 2's blade system, except they aren't tied to each other (even though you can use the overdrive, that doesn't count) and can be flexibly moved around across everyone. So with Xeno 1 we have every character being MOSTLY separate entities (one layer), Xeno 2 we have the dual character dynamic with Drivers and Blades (two layers) and now I see in three that we have characters with 2 modes they can switch between AND a third mode that can be activated when linked with another character for a third layer. It fits well with the theming of the game (Two opposing sides fighting, but coming together creates a great strength) and I can't wait to dive into the depths of this combat.

    -Party Swap for sure. Xenoblade 1 and 2 are both well known for the AI Party members messing up whether it be Shulk's AI or Tora not breaking with QTPie
    -Some Gambit esque system from FF12. Never played FF12 myself, but I heard it has very good AI customization.

      I wouldn't like the gambit system to show up. Yes, it allows for AI to be good. ClementJ64 played the Zodiac Age at 12x speed without significant detriment. Just let that sink in. And I'm not sure how you could downplay such a system so that doesn't happen, while not just being the Kingdom Hearts AI customization.

Maybe it's because I'm expecting the trailer to look like final gameplay in terms of characters onscreen (given they've likely been sitting on a mostly finished game for a while, as you said), but the party's physical formation looks a lot more like 1/X than Drivers and Blades in 2, and I don't see why they'd make the rear guard invisible here unless to obfuscate the party system. I just want to say something about a novel that i'm currently reading 'Warlock of the Magus World' it was translated in 2017 and as I continue reading it the similarities between it and xc3 increases, at first there were Seers a bunch of test subject by the mc for testing a recreation of an ability that makes see into the flow of destiny and see the future, I didn't of the Seers that much but after that the mc joins the Ouroboros clan and guess what is the name of a promising youth from the Ouroboros clan with pure bloodline? Fricking Noah, if the novel have any more similarties i'll (hopefully) update this comment.

    So watching your video got me thinking more about the clocks on everyone's weapons, and I started to question if different characters had different halves of their clocks filled up (thus supporting your theory that you might need to find someone with the other half of the clock to unlock the ouroboros). I went to check it out and unfortunately it was easier said than done. First off, with the characters swinging the weapons around as well as doing acrobatics, it was hard to get good view of the clocks most of the time. Second, even when I could see the clocks, most of the weapons don't have an easily identifiable way of knowing witch way is meant to be up. Luckily some clocks (such as the ones on the giant mechs) are easy to read and I can confirm that their are some Agnus clocks that fill the right half and some Agnus clocks that fill the left half, additionally the Keves nation shows off many of their solders and I can say there are examples of either side being filled of the same weapon type. It is safe to say that witch side of the clock is filled is not dependent on nation.
    As for our party members, I am working under the assumption that the bladed weapons (Noah, Mio and Lanz) are all considered upright when their blades are pointed down (i.e. how in past games the weapons were stored when not in use). With that I can say that Mio has the right side filled and Noah and Lanz have the left side filled (in particular about Lanz's sword, their is one shot where we get clear view of both sides of weapon and the clock displays left regardless of witch side you view the weapon). Eunie I assume the clock was aligned to be upright when she uses it as a staff and thus has the right side filled. Sena was a bit weird as her clock is sideways compared to the orientation of the handle, thus my best guess is that her right side is filled based on how she holds it in her ready stance. Last but not least Taion's gauntlet I'm guessing the correct orientation is when his arms are at his sides, at witch point his clock is filled on the left half. It appears that boys have left half field while girls have right sides filled, similar to how in your xenogears example the male angle was on the left and the female was on the right. Then again this does take some assumptions so with way is up for some of the weapons so I could be wrong.

    See, now I'm concerned. This sounds so good that I'm worried that the actual combat won't be this interesting! I think there is a lot of potential in a customizable tag team system. Maybe arts, skills, and abilities could have different effects depending on how you compose the teams. If mechs do return in some form, maybe they'll be tandem mechs, and which two pilots you put together could alter how they play! A lot of cool stuff to think about.

    Thank you so much for your conversation surrounding the battle system of Torna. I have felt very alone in my opinion that just using Torna’s battle system for XC3 would be a bad idea, at least for me personally. I spend more time then most in these types of games so I spent way more than 15/20 hrs completing Torna and I was absolutely bored by the combat way before I finished it. I have played XC2 a few times and never feel bored due to the sheer variety of play/customization I can do with it. It’s all subjective but it was really great knowing someone else had the same thoughts about it. Loved listening to your ideas. Thanks for the great video.

    What if the Ouroboros actually occurs for the parties when they swap flutes? Maybe the flutes that "mourn" (think a Sending ala FFX) are tied to a nation and cause those souls to return or join the "collective" of that nation (and all members present "absorb" or gain their power or something like that -- Highlander rules?). By switching them, perhaps it allows them to gain the "other half" that these groups are missing? In this manner, the Anima/Animus are not tied necessarily to the pairings of the characters, but rather the fact that they have another member on the "opposing" side?
    This would line up well with Takahashi's prior works (good initial catch on Anima/Animus), but also add in with the entire Collective Unconscious, etc. Since we've theorized that some members are highly ether-focused (XC2) and some are highly machina-focused (XC1), perhaps the sum of the two parts is what it takes to truly make everyone "whole" again, post-Klaus?

      I think it's more complicated in the sense that the systems interact in complex ways, and from what I understand the stats are kind of deceptive in how they work (blades don't necessarily act according to their supposed roles, the auto-attack stat affects all damage, etc). So I'd say the trappings surrounding the combat are complicated, but I agree with you that aside from the orb system the combat itself isn't all that hard to understand.

    I think by more characters on screen they mean more enemies. This seems like a more war focused game like xenoblade 1. But if you remember the war parts in xenoblade 1, you're usually just stuck in a circle while the enemies are just standing around it as props. Only a few enemies actually spawn in the circle, and they come in waves.
    Xenoblade 3 might be a much more immersive battlefield where people are actually fighting each other in the level and you can walk around and engage in the battles taking place.

    I have to imagine there is at least some perceived downside to ouroboros, since it's a snake eating itself and they supposedly abhor the world. I wouldn't be too surprised if the flame clock is something that charges during battle and ouroboros is the thing you get when it's fully charged, probably functionally similar to affinity and max affinity, but where getting max flame clock causes you to enter a powered up mode, similar to overdrive (bet you they call it overclock since it's a clock). Basically instead of chain attack or overdrive being a party thing, it's now tied to vanguard/rearguard affinity and triggers per pair instead of party wide.
    Either way, I hope a version of overdrive comes back instead of chain attack. Chain attack is a pace killer and overdrive is a pace accelerator.

All more-or-less broke the established rules. Heck, I just went through NG+ and 100%’d Torna again this past week and I don’t think I found any clear instances explaining how Minoth could fight alongside Addam as he did besides whatever we could find in the base game about various Flesh Eaters, so I don’t think the rules have to or even will be all that stiff anyways.

    I get this feeling that clocks are going to be integral to both the plot and the combat, much like core crystals were for XBC2. It could function as a constantly depleting resource in a fight, similar to Devil May Cry's style points. It might be used for special attacks, or add some passive effect.
    I think Ouroboros will likely be activated between characters of opposing worlds, not genders. The each nations' clocks fill in different directions, which has me thinking that Ouroboros might be activated by mixing blue and green ether. There's even a very short shot in the trailer where it seems Noah's weapon has a line of green ether flowing through the middle. If I'm right, I imagine this phenomenon could be a reason for this war. Maybe something REALLY bad happens when two people from different worlds resonate with each other in this way.

    Only wish:
    Have Poppi return, not even as a playable character just let her be there and play some part in the story. If we get her as a party member though and we go with this idea for a combat system, well she is already an artificial blade so she could link with anyone. PoppiBuster did that in xenoblade 2 as well so, it would be nice to see something like that come back. In a sense she is already the best combination of both worlds, being highly mechnanical yet using ether in a similar way to blades (which would also give her so much story and worldbuilding potential), also customization, you could really go overboard with poppi.
    Although in a sense it would also be really powerful to see some of the xenoblade 2 blades come back and reject the oroborous system because of their attachemnt to their drivers.

Wonder if by killing their opponent’s they fill their clocks but they cap out at half so they have to keep fighting in order to survive but they later find out by working together they can fill their clocks and not have to kill anyone anymore. But if everyone did this then the next generation wouldn’t be able to fill their clocks and might die out. Are there 2 clocks?
      Can the clocks become Ouroboros if there are 2?
      If the clock(s) run(s) out will the land be destroyed?
      Can Ouroboros be feed to the clock(s)?
      If the clock(s) are/is destroyed does that end the conflict?
      If the clock(s) are/is destroyed will that lead to a greater tragedy? (Giant snake final boss?)
      If there was once a second clock was it somehow destroyed making it so the flame clock couldn’t become Ouroboros thus needing endless sacrifices?

    Xenoblade 2 base game battle system is my least favorite. I prefer to have a smaller and consistent cast over a variety of blades. Also not having blades shown in cutscenes besides the main story (ESPECIALLY ROC) besides the main story blades took me out of the immersion.
    The variety of blades made the battle system way too inconsistent and also I got soured by Rex being able to deploy every blade on him on my first playthrough after using many core crystals on him.
    Having to use 3 specials to get one orb was a chore throughout the story to then use a chain attack. The movement is also very stiff and has restrictions with max blade affinity. Movement felt a lot looser in Xenoblade 1 and especially X.
    Torna fixed all of the major problems I had with the base game, with really the only big blemish on it was the Community building to continue the story.

    I think you misunderstand the point people make about taking the Torna battle system and putting it in 2. They typically only refer to the actual *combat* and not the customisation surrounding it. People wanting Torna style combat in main game XC 2 is evidence of both being lacking. XC 2 has great customisation, but poorly explained gameplay that, even if you do understand it, doesn't always feel great. You're punished for switching blades instead of rewarded. Torna improved greatly upon the *combat* aspect of the gameplay, at the cost of removing all customisation. What people want is for them to put Torna style combat in a game with XC 2 level of customisation, so they'd have the best of both worlds.
    Obviously, the problem with this is that it would take a lot more work to make Torna combat work with the customisation of 2. However, I think you'll agree that a system like that *would* be preferable to either version we currently have.

      Customization that ultimately boils down to every fight being break>topple>daze?

    • @xord5293
      @xord5293 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NoonDragoon That's what I hear most of the time. X1 is bad because Break, Topple, Daze. Well I never use those, and X2 has Break, Topple, Launch, Smash, and you don't hear anyone say that X2 combat is bad because of that.
      X1's can be insanely cutomizable with with Skill Trees, and Affinity Skills than you link between party members, in addition to gem crafting and allocation. With those tools you can do alot. Think of these tools as the simple primary colors that you mix to make a painting with you battle palette. Hah, that is so poetic lol.
      Anyways, with those tools you can focus on customizing you arts palette to go along with you skill strategy. For instance, using skills to focus on red arts or purple arts for insane raw physical or ether damage. Anothe thing you can try a purely auto attack party, with double attack skills links and gems in addition with haste gems and auras. You can try making a pure agility party with Naked Dunban and link that skills of his to all of you party members (and stip them all naked for the Agility boost lol). Another thing you can try is an ether DoT damage party. You can also try killing enemies without attacking by making Spike damage builds. Another thing you can try is an area-attack party that focuses on attacking multiple enemies at once...etc. You can also try a chain attack build that generates the chain bar instantly for max damage. Then there are the more basic builds of crit damage for instant chain attacks.
      This is not even counting that 90% of arts have a 'side effect' in battle that ties into how you play the game. But I will be writing a novel if I talk about those. The game gives you a discription of each art so you can use it effectively in battle though.
      There is a 2010 video of someone killing a superboss with Sharla... You see what I mean? X1 is insanely customizable but people focus on Break Topple Daze to portray the battle system as a primitive and dumb one. Most people don't even know why some arts are red, blue, yellow, orange, and purple and how that ties into your strategies...

    • @NoonDragoon
      @NoonDragoon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xord5293 Maybe I should have worded my point better, but your comment did help to illustrate my personal issues with the combat system of XC1. My main point of contention for XC1's battle system is that there are a limited number of systems to engage with *in battle itself*, not in the time before battle. In battle itself, there are a limited number of options to take to alter the flow of battle, this is why so many resort to either high crit chain attacks by simply matching art colors, or the break>daze>topple combo. But, as you described, there is certainly customization that can be done before battles to create different playstyles. I would personally argue that a player doing so is creating complexity from an inherently simple battle system in order to make a varied playstyle, whereas sequel XC battle systems keep the amount of customization options pre-battle while also introducing systems to engage with in battle.
      XCX is my major argument against the simplicity of XC1's battle system. All of your previous points about customization before battle is easily applied as well to XCX's systems, and more. XCX also has the soul voice command customization, Skell arts and Skell gear customization, and the main player character being a blank slate that can take on any role. But also, *in combat* XCX outshines XC1. Arts management, positioning, and arts side effects are still in play but there is also now TP management, melee vs. ranged arts/weapons, the overdrive protocols, targetable appendages, and the soul voice system. And that's just ground combat, before even getting into Skell combat, or Skell + ground combat. The only thing really lost from XC1 to XCX is the chain attack system, which was pretty boring in XC1 as it really only served to "match the colors to get high damage number". In battle for XCX, there is much more to engage with that makes battles incredibly varied, even without fully engaging in it's pre-battle systems to create superboss level builds (such as the Blossom Dance build).
      And to your point about XC2 also having break>topple>launch>smash, I imagine that isn't brought up in contention as much because driver combos are just one of the systems in battle. There are also blade combos and fusion combos that build with driver combos, which all build up to a unique chain attack system that uses the orbs built up during those combos. Your actions in those various combos directly have effects on other systems in the battles, whereas the break>topple>daze combo in XC1 is a singular system that doesn't affect other systems in XC1's battles. A chain attack isn't affected, outside of raw damage numbers, by whether an enemy is dazed or not.

      But let's get to the argument about XC1's battle system. I sincerely disagree with your point that XC1's battle system becomes primitve after the battle has started. Let me try to illustrate that with an example of one of my playstyles. Once the battle starts, I try to actively look for Defense Down side effects from arts and stack those (Shulk's Slilt Edge and Melia's Bust End for i.e) before I go all canon. If I control Melia, the decisions in battle become even more important, so I must keep aggro in mind and have Reflection ready if anything comes up. Of course, this is on top of actively working with whatever set up I made before battle, like a Naked Dunban strat of anything else.
      Now the main point of my argument; XC2 gives you so much stuff to do before battle (I'd say sometimes it gets too much), only to have you never think in battle. The reason for that is because everything you do is predictable (aka repetitive and boring) because you are following this extremely rigid layered system that builds upon things you did before. Auto Attack > Driver Arts > Blade Arts > Fusion Combo > Orb > Rinse > Repeat > Chain Attack > Break Orb > Rinse > Repeat. If I the game gives me this layered system to execute, what decisions to I have to make on my own? People love XC2's combat simply because the real Dopamine rush comes from having big damage numbers. So in order for you to get the big numbers, there is no strategizing or anything that you have to keep track of other than just follow that layered system to get your big numbers. How is this better than XC1's system, where you have to actually think in battle so you do not die?
      It's crazy to me when people say that XC1's system is too predictable solely because of its Break Topple Daze, which is just one of the myriad of ways you can play in that game, when XC2's combat is literally built to be predictable.
      Anyways here's another point that many people do not know: If an enemy is dazed in XC1, it does not know who is hitting it. So no aggro is generated, and thus if you are playing a low health character like Melia, just fire away with no fear. This is why I pair Dunban with Melia, use Dunban's Yellow Fart move to instantly daze all enemies behind him, start chain attack, and then go wombo combo with Melia cannons without fearing she gets aggro. Is there such synergy between characters in XC2?
