He had a point though. What Arya was taught was defensive sword play with a rapier. The goal wasn't to kill. The goal was to just drag the fight out long enough to either make the attacker give up in frustration or give time for someone else to intervene and do the wet work and get blood on their hands and avoid the lady having to do it herself.

@Liberty or Death really, wow 0.0 i learnt something about an island where he went and was supposed to have a kind of Christian life not being a sinner anymore. I read also a lot about sansan ship and I thought it was beyond this part, not only when he was protecting Arya and talked about how pretty is her bigger sister. In the book hes less charismatic, the actor in the show made him as deep and funny as a daddy bear, but in the book hes colder and more threatening even with Sansa in the first book. Thanks for your answer, i was hesitating to read all the books to know more about him ^^

The thing about that whole exchange, and Arya was the only other person in that room who understood it, was that everytime Sandor mentioned eating a chicken, he was talking about killing somebody. At first it was just going to be the talker, because he was rude to Arya, with the whole trading chickens comment. But when the Talker looked back at his friend, he knew he would have to kill two. After that he knew he was just going to kill the whole lot of them on principle.

I love how protective he is over Arya when he first meets Brienne, my faves just trying to protect the starks
KesselRunHero perhaps, but by the end of the series he seems to care for her in at least some way. He convinces her not to follow him so she will not die and during the battle against the white walkers, he jumps in after seeing Arya in danger when just moments before he was screaming in fear due to the fire and the dead. But Sandor is also one of my favorite characters, so ofc I’m biased !!

Sansa should have taken up the Hound's offer of leaving with him. I love how a 'Hound' protected and has a soft spot for the Lady Wolves of Winterfell.
It's probably the key insight into his true character: He's a man of virtue and he recognizes that the Starks, though ethically confused, are morally pure and ergo his kin. There are few people with much in the way of morals in Westeros and they all fascinate Clegaine.
He's a giant piss take of the 'Knight in Shining Armor' concept. He is exactly that, so of course he'll defend Sansa, it's just never quite how it's told in the fairytales lol
It's why him & Arya are gold together. She's an even bigger piss take of the damsel in distress, their chemistry writes itself.
Hounds and wolves may bicker, but it seems all dogs will pack up.
His name or banner may also be a reference to his cynicism (which literally means "dog-like"). Who knows?

He was done. This was his resignation to the worst boss ever after putting up with more than he thought he would for him. But true to Sandor, he doubled down and made his feelings clear. No half steps. Just pure rancor.

Despite his hard, cold exterior- hell, his interior, too, Sandor had a soft spot for the Stark girls. The bond he and Arya developed happened organically and didn't seem to be forced. They became a dynamic duo.
Maybe my favorite character...Amidst all the convoluted, high stakes political intrigue and gamesmanship and sometimes even noble purpose, he's just a regular guy who is tired, pissed off, hungry, and cold...All he really wants is a drink, a hot meal, and a warm bed...He'd rather not have to go to all the trouble, but if you are in between him and those, he will kill you...

I HATED the Hound at first. Now he's one of my favorite characters. Hope he slays the Mountain, survives the white walkers and lives a long miserable, bitching and intoxicated life.
He started redeeming himself the second he offered help to Sansa, although I don't really like her.
When he was travelling with Arya, it got more and more obvious that he's actually a good guy, who's been wronged a lot in his life, starting with his brother

Hands down the best of the series. Best introduction, best departure and best everything in between.

The hound had an incredible story arc from a bad guy who was Joffrey’s pet, to a complex individual dealing with his hatred of his brother for his disfigurement. I really liked how he protected Sansa early on and then Arya, even though she was his captive. They were a great comedic duo and I think underneath all that armor (literal and figurative) he really cared for her well-being.
I wouldn't have called him a bad guy early on. I would have called him an obedient guy. He was loyal to the Lannisters because they basically saved him from his brother. You don't hear about that in the show, just the books, but Gregor basically wiped out the entire Clegane family and after their dad died, Sandor knew he'd be next so he went to the Lannisters to be their hired sword. Gregor was hardly going to touch him then. Kid was maybe twelve when that happened so it wasn't like he could take on his big brother yet.

I have a hard time remembering some of the books, GRRM would write in such detail to the point where would describe the peeling of an onion for two pages and I’d get distracted. I’ve never been the best when it comes to fiction, yet for some reason I could read a physics text book all day and solve the problems in it. Kinda the reverse of most people.

Hound and Bron were my two favourite characters out of the whole series. Loved this!
So many brilliant characters I don't think I could pick a favourite: but Sandor Clegane certainly had the best lines.
They better not kill Sandor in the upcoming season. Man is a savage, westeros needs someone like him.
