Sandor may be no saint, but he rescued Sansa from beeing raped and murdered and actually cared for her well being.
He protected Arya and I still think the "ransom" is nothing more than an excuse. A lie he tells himself because he refuses to admit that both Arya and Sansa remind him of his sister who was killed by his older brother. He acts like he did because he thinks that this kind of feeling is a weakness.
He protected both of them because he blames himself for his sisters death and wants to do at least one good thing before he dies. If not for Sandor's bravery, Arya and Sansa would have never seen each other again and Little Finger possibly never got the justice he deserved for betraying Ned Stark.
Ned would definitly be thankfull if he survived the show.

Rawr5649 What the hell did she ever do to earn it? Like everyone is talking of how Sansa matured and became a mastermind and very good player jn the game but only thing that happened was that she stopped crying and she quite literally did nothing that actually showed a mastermind. The only reason she isn’t still manipulated by Littlfinger or that she killed him is because Littlfinger didn’t know Bran’s abilities as the three Eyed Raven. Plus that her “independence” of the north was totally bs, like she fucking asks Bran for it and he just happens to say yes. So no it would be satisfying if she had earned instead of running around being manipulated. Jon on the other hand........ Additionally the fact that you jumped in the series last 2 season smells from miles. Its queen in the north nit queen of the North

It was because of her that they conquered back the North. She always knew she was smarter than Jon and she herself said that he couldn't do the same mistakes Ned and Robb did. When Jon went to Dragonstone, it was her who was with the northerners and acted like a real lady saying what was needed and what they could be better to be prepared to the winter. It was Sansa that never bent the knee because she knew the North deserved better. If she doesn't deserve the North, no one does (and I'm not talking about Arya).

Ned stark might've been Arya's father, but Sandor Clegane was a Dad to her when she needed it.
Edit: This is four years after, damn. Alright what I mean by him being a dad, he literally taught her the things that allow her not to be gutted and lying in a ditch with lifeless expression. Ned was good, but he didn't want either of his daughters to be anything of what they became to be. Arya being probably one of the best fighters and skilled assassin (Even though I'm highly disappointed it wasn't Jon that killed night king). Sansa being ruthless & cunning, outwitting the one man who taught her how to be deceitful and was the one who started the chain of events that led to Ned's death. Sandor taught them how to live in a world where no one gives a shit about you, and everyone has agenda. You won't make it unless you fight for it. That's the show Sandor, the book oh boy that's a WHOLE different story.

Sandor had the best or rather, only redemption arc in the entire show.
He was made a monster due to his circumstances and he embraced that role.
He became more than just a tool for evil. He defended Sansa not because he owed it to her or he hoped she'd take him somewhere. He did it because he chose to. He fought for arya because he chose to. He could have retired to building the sept, but destiny needed him and again, he chose to be the better man. He never stopped being the monster he just learned to control it better and decided to serve good instead.
    He won.

He deserved a happy ending, but he was never going to get one, and he knew it. The world made him a monster, and the best he could do was put his brutality in the service of a good cause. A real warrior wants to go out fighting a worthy foe, preferably taking that foe with him, and that's exactly what the Hound did.

The hound was, for me, that character we all find watching a show that we latch onto and relate with for personal reasons. And when he achieved his ultimate goal of taking back his innocence from his brother I actually cried. I was so happy for him. I knew he would die in the end but not without getting his just deserts. Truly a marvel character.

All the characters are compelling, of course, and take surprising turns, but foul mouthed, foul tempered, death dealing, vulnerable Sandor Clegane, and the way he protected the Stark girls, was simultaneously the most complicated, and the most simple. Staying power, he has.

Making him also very lonely: a man who's knew little joy in life. When he 'tuck tail' at the blackwater, he had his fill of the corrupt south, and saw his opportunity to mayhaps try his luck in the North instead, protecting Arya to safety would surly put him on a good standing with the Northern Lords, or even the Starks of Winterfell themselves? After capturing the Wight, beyond the wall, Sandor returned to the Capitol, only to see his só háted brother, the brutal butcher of his family an disgrace to everyone that was ever Knighted, was now a 'proud member of the Kingsguard': As a zombiefied monster, the Mountain was virtually unkillable, as in the fight itself, Sandor quite easily disarmed Gregor and stuck a broadsword, right though his chest(plate). A stunning move that would have instantly killed even the best warriors, yet the Mountain, 'undone'by Qyburn's experiments was unstoppable. See how EASILY Sandor dispatches of FOUR Kingsguard that come at him in the final confrontation... 'Whup-chop, slice, pop, chop, hack'... 4 man dead, 4 of the so called BEST swordsmen in Westeros....If it was the alive-Mountain, he wouldnt have stood a chance against Sandor.

    Despite his outside appearance....
Despite hundreds of people he killed...
    Despite his violence...
There was a part of Sandor Clegane's inner heart that contained compassion. He knew that an older sibling's job is to protect a younger one. His own brother's fierce, wicked, and murderous cruelty was the ultimate betrayal. Among the Seven Kingdoms, The Hound was one of the most honest, and true people to exist. In a way, he 'adopted' Arya. The love he had for her was unconventional, and even he didn't know he had it. Arya's greatest benefit from Sandor was wisdom about life and the world, a far greater asset than her learning the assassin skills of Jaqen H'ghar, or sword fighting from Syrio Forel.
Sandor, Tyrion, and Jon were the heart of the series. They were the toughest, bravest, wisest, honest, and most honorable of all.
