What do you think about having activated carbon? I know it can be used in dogs, cats (and humans) in case of toxicity and also humans take it to absorb gas. Maybe it could help rabbits w/ stasis until you get them to the vet? And I recommend DE diatomaceous earth for natural treatment of fleas. Also, what about adding glucosamine to their greens, water to deal with inflammation/arthritis in early stages to avoid needles?

    • @mignonnesilva4306
      @mignonnesilva4306 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I am not sure activated charcoal will help a rabbit with GI stasis. Definitely ask your vet about that but my bun needed that once and the vet thought the charcoal could have been a reason to cause the stasis among other things.

A tip to anyone making an emergency kit for any reason. If you don't know how to use it, it does not belong in your kit. Subcutaneous fluids, needles, otoscope, and medications are examples of things that you may not be trained to use. Some things like a thermometer and stethoscope can be exceptions to this rule because their is no serious risk to you or your pet as long as you are being gentle. Though you may not know what to do with any of the information these tools provide you with, that is why you call your vet if you have any concerns.
Other great tools to include in your kit.
    nail trimmers
lots of different types of tape, medical tape, duck tape, masking tape. Just use each for its appropriate use(s).
    A food dish
a water bowl or bottle (depending on what your pet uses and is familiar with).
    clean towels/blankets
    bedding materiel
appropriate pet carrier or create (especially important if you need to evacuate due to a storm or other emergency or need to rush to the vet)
    leash/tether
harness/collar (leads and collars are especially important if you need to evacuate due to a storm or other emergency)
ear cleaning solution and or pads
cotton swabs and pads (never use Q-tips or swabs in or near your pets eyes or ears)
bandages (both elastic and none elastic)
    Sterile gauze
    gloves
wound cleaning solution (hydrogen peroxide (best stored in its original container), betadine iodine (always dilute with water when cleaning a wound))
A bag or container for your pets food (mark out portion sizes on the container if possible to help you not over feed and run out sooner than expected best to pack 3-7 days worth for each pet)
An appropriately sized scoop for portioning food
    Other tips:
Always have your pets collar or harness tags information up to date and be sure they are wearing them
Have your pet microchip if possible (tags are great but can fall off or become separated from your pet, microchips are considered permanent forms of pet ID that your pet can never loose.)
Have your pets microchip registered in a pets microchip data base ( have access to your account with these data bases and up date your pets information regularly)
Finally include emergency phone numbers and information about your pet(s) in your kit. This can help reunite you and your pet if you become separated. You can send this information with your pet if you need to leave them in the care of an animal shelter, friend, or relative temporarily.
Have a list of phone number too...
several pet friendly hotels and emergency shelters in your area as well as outside of your area in case you and your pet(s) need to evacuate.
Relatives and friends (so you can let them know when your safe and make arrangements for your and/or your pet(s) to stay with them if possible)
Your pet(s) veterinarian (so someone can call if they have questions about your pets health status or records)
Information to include in your kit...
An up to date photo of your pet(s) (Both digital and printed, this can be used to make lost pet posters in case the worst should happen, or can be sent to pet rescues, shelters, animal control, and veterinarian hospitals to help ID your pet if they are taken in by one of these entities.)
A digital and paper copy of your pet(s) health records
The name and portion size of your pets current food(s) and bedding (this can help care givers prevent your animal from experiencing extra stress and discomfort from sudden changes to their food and bedding material)
The name, dose, prescribing doctors name, and vet practices name of any medications or supplements your pet is currently taking.
Special care instructions (especially if your pet is an exotic pet or has special needs. This can range from describing how your pet needs UV and/or basking lights, a heating pad, humidity requirements, special ways you entice them to eat. ANYTHING you feel that a complete stranger may need to know about taking care of your individual pets needs.)
Sorry this was so long but I am very passionate about animals health and well being as well as being prepared for emergencies. If even one person read even a single line of this that helped them with their pet, then I am happy.

That roll of wrap is called vet wrap and also co-band. It is a bandaging material that sticks to itself but not to fur or skin. Just be very careful not to wrap it too tight, and also remove/check on it frequently, as it tightens with time and can easily cut circulation off if wrapped too tightly. We use this lots with our larger livestock.

GI stasis is when they stop eating and their digestive system stops moving. They need to eat constantly and their GI system needs to always be moving. It's common in bunnies.

Gas drops have not been proven to help with gas or GI stasis in rabbits. It’s not harmful, but vets don’t believe it helps. Rabbits need medical intervention like pain medication, motility meds, and fluids.
