Definitely but knowledge is important. The reality that most of us will experience this with our buns and having helpful information of what to look for, what to have on hand definitely takes a great deal of that fear away. ❤

Wondering what a vet could do for a bunny that is different than you providing critical care and gas drops?

    • @bunnyadvocate4139
      @bunnyadvocate4139 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@codymagee4387 Bunnies suffering from gi stasis are also in pain that will leave them unable to eat. So for one thing they can get appropriate pain medication. Intravenous fluids can be used if needed. Sometimes without the vet’s assistance the bunnies may die. GI stasis can kill a bunny in 12-24 hours.

My Bun literally went through GI Stasis a couple of hours ago. Luckily I caught it quite in an early stage. He had his herbs at lunch time but didn't eat his greens at dinner time and refused any treats. I still had Inflacam at home (a pain relief medicine given by our vet) from our first GI episode in April which I gave him 0.15ml of and fed him 0.7ml of critical care (fine grind). Additionally I kept my Bun on my lap and massaged his tummy for a solid 10min. After 2 hours I caught him drinking water again and snacking on his greens. I kept him under my surveillance for a solid 12 hours to make sure that he was good. Luckily it was just a scare and I was able to care for him at home. Hope this information may help any bun parent out there. ♥

My bunny is on day 2 of G.I. stasis. I laid her on her back (head tilted down with her body at an angle) and massaged her belly and she "passed gas". I sat her down and offered her some food, and she ATE IT!!! She also nibbled on some parsley and hay. Hopefully she will get better. 🙏 ❤ Prayers for Bunny!

I had a lion head rabbit for almost 12 years, and due to the wool in his fur, he went into GI stasis about 4 times a year. It was horrible! I used to feed him papaya tablets from GNC to help prevent it, however they discontinued it during COVID. Thankfully, I was able to find
another product online that contains papaya and papain. It is called Sherwood Pet Health digestive support. It keeps the GI tract moving and has pineapple and papaya. It's approximately $25 for 100 tablets, but well worth it!!!! He ended up passing away of old age,. But I truly believe these tablets gave him an extra few years.

I know I’m late to the party, but I wanted to share what my bunny went through. I’m still in school and don’t get home until around 3:30 or so. I usually have homework that is due the day afterso I do that and then hang out with my bunny after. He usually gets 30 minutes to an hour of attention (I’m trying to get that up but sometimes extracurriculars get in the way as well. My rabbit is very well taken care of though and is the most spoiled little man ever!) Anyway - the first time I thought he had stasis was on a Wednesday night after a big game I had and I got home pretty late. When I got to him, he had eaten all his food but when i replenished his food he didn’t run to his bowl like usual. He was also hiding in his enclosure. He was pretty hunched and his eyes were droopy. He refused to eat greens and treats so I was really worried. I called every exotic pet vet near me but all of them were closed including the vet we previously went to. (At this time he was around a year old and we went to see the vet when he was 6-7 months old) We couldn’t do anything because we didn’t have supplies and he wouldn’t move. He even pushed his water bowl and it spilled EVERYWHERE. So the only thing we could do was wait until the morning to take him to the vet. But, fortunately , he was eating when I got to his pen in the morning. Not sure what happened, but he was better for a while until now. not quite as bad and he is moving. ate a little bit and allowing to pet him. The vet is closed. We have to wait until tomorrow again. Keeping a close eye on him! Pray for him 🙏

My rabbit got this last week, brought her inside immediately when I realised she wasn't eating anything.. not even her favourite treats. Also hunched up in the corner. I massaged her abdomen which helped, also lifting her back end up gently and holding it in the air (helps the gases move around).
I gave her some babys Infacol and watched her very closely. After around 12 hours, she was better and started pooping and peeing again.
Put her back to her ordinary housing and she's doing very well now. Still keeping a close eye on her.

I lost a bunny recently to GI stasis because I didn't catch it soon enough. She had had a spay surgery 10 days prior so it was even harder to detect. It was a horrific and traumatic experience... I will be much much more vigilant and proactive in the future and will buy infant gas meds and critical care to have on hand.

@@diana-xw9fkfirst you need to understand the genesis of the stasis. In our bun’s case, it seems always to be gas. For us, giving baby gas drops turns it around within a half hour. Only once did we have to repeat it. When she’s refusing food, we give her the drops via syringe and also give her pineapple juice via syringe. Our vet says that has an enzyme that can help break down fur. Be aware that pineapple juice is frowned on by some, but we trust our vet. Things to have on hand include baby gas drops, unsweetened pineapple juice, and some people keep metacam. Having said all this, it’s important to get to a vet asap if your bunny shows signs and these home remedies don’t turn it around very quickly. Our girl just seems susceptible to gas. Hope this helps!

We just went thru this with one of our buns. He had it twice in a couple of months and got thru it but the third time I feel like he just gave up. He was sitting in the bathroom which he never did. We took him to the vet and they said they'd have to operate or put him down. The operation was $8000 and not a very good chance of survival. I still keep wondering what caused it, he was always a healthy, active bunny and we never changed anything in his diet. I wish we could've done more for him. Miss you madly Mr Bean.

He refused to eat his treats, had to get the big guns out and only then did he eat it. I was unsure if he was hunched over, couldnn't tell from his posture but he did turn into a loaf so I was confused.

Bunnies and guineapigs need good quality hay at all times. The fiber of the hay and actively munching helps keep the bowels active and the digestive system working. They need much more hay than "wet" food, which has lots of sugar and feeds bacteria.

This info is so important! My Eden just got over a GI Stasis episode. I ended up having to take her to a new vet since her regular didn’t have any openings. Worked out fine, new vet is just a much longer drive, comparatively. Would appreciate tips on administering critical care. Eden is a very stubborn bun, and while administering tiny syringes of medication is difficult, administering larger syringes of critical care is impossible with just one person. SubQ fluids were easier to handle by myself than critical care is! Fortunately, she was willing to eat pellets even if she refused critical care. And vet authorized lifting the limit on fruit, so Eden got a fairly sizable chunk of banana to enjoy. But at least she was eating.

Because the symptoms were similar I treated it like stasis til I got her to the vet. I was wondering if you have done a video on bloat? Like the signs to watch out for, just for those who are new to bun parenting so they know the differences, I'd hate for someone to go through what I went through.

My precious 1 year old bunny is bloated since yesterday 3:00 pm. Although she's eating, drinking water, peeing and pooping, she's still lethargic and bloated. I'm giving her baby drops every 8 hours and massaging her tummy, but I'm not seeing major improvements. She is even accepting pellets and bananas (I'm not giving them, just offering to understand her condition). I thought about taking her to the vet but since I'm a minor, I can't afford to take her, much less pay for the consultation and exams. My fear is that it's some kind of obstruction (I'm pretty sure she ate the mop's sponge) or something worse and she passes away due to the negligence of my guardians. I'm doing my best to reverse the situation. Please pray for my little one! 🙏

Stretching is a normal body movement. If your bunny yawns and stretches and then goes about their business, they are fine. If they stretch and press their belly into the floor and then don’t move and do it frequently, that’s pancaking and should be treated as a sign to act.

My bunny is severely overweight to the point where she cannot clean her behind and poops builds up (we have to clean it for her). I’m sad to see I’ve been neglecting her to this point. So I need your guy’s advice and help. We’ve started a diet but I don’t know how to get her active. I take her outside for walks and she explores and jumps around for 5 minutes and then sits for 30. What do I do?

Cut back on the amount of pellets if she’s 5 pounds or less she doesn’t need anymore then 1 tbsp of pellets per day. Make sure they’re Timothy hay based and don’t have fruits or seeds or extra junk mixed in with the pellets. Oxbow, and Small Pet Select. No alfalfa hay even in treats. Unlimited Timothy hay or orchard grass hay. No treats period. Limit green to 1-2 cups per day. I adopted an overweight male last January and I had him on a strict diet and he lost over a 1lb in a few months. The vet said he needed to loose 2 lbs at most. But his diet now is even strict. It’s just pellets, hay and veggies. No treats. I got him moving around to by getting down on the ground and encouraging him to move and explore.

So I’m curious, is it really necessary to neuter a bun? If you don’t own another one and they are past that six month mark there’s no issues with behavior or anything and I’m afraid to cause any issues by getting a surgery that might not be necessary.

It’s the risk of cancer that is concerning especially for female rabbits they can develop cancer in their uterus. As well as some females can become aggressive over their pen or cage areas. Males will spray urine and hump so it’s behavioral issues you’re avoiding by having them neutered. It also much easier to litterbox train them and not have them marking up areas of your house.

GI stasis is such a sneaky thing, and just like you're saying, if you don't know what to look for, it can be easily missed. But when in doubt, do the snack test! (Give them something they always eat as a test) in my experience, if they don't take the snack, they're in GI stasis (or just really pissed off, if I just cut their nails or something lol)

With my bunny it is not coming for a treat and/or hunching and not wanting to move. That is when I call for emergency vet.

Oh my! I never rly knew this, I've had my bunny for two years but until now that i rly ever pay attention about the sickness she could get (mostly becuz i was busy with schools). I can see some of the symptoms you've told in the vid and back then i thought it was just some weird behaviour she's having. I was thinking about getting her to a vet but it's hard to find any vet that accepts rabbit in my area. Could you let me know the name of the critical care medicine? I would love to give that to my bunny whenever i see her acting like this again, and I'll definitely bring her to a vet next time i had a chance. Hopefully she gets better too, tq for this useful information, i love you :') ❤

Please, please, please DO NOT force feed a bunny until a blockage has been ruled out by your exotic vet. Work with your vet to establish a care plan for when your bunny stops eating and pooping, or just isn't acting right. Also, be sure to know what to do and where to go when your regular exotic vet is closed. Stasis rarely happens during regular office hours.
