Arrowhead hunting TN - Dovetails to Big Sandys and everything in between!

  • It's been slow for the past month and a half, but I finally managed to find enough for a decent video! The first point up is one of my favorite point types. Dovetails have such a different base style, its hard not to love them! The point at the 6:00 min mark was found exactly below where I pulled the big red benton out of the dirt wall earlier this year. That little spot has been productive this year! The little multi use tool at 10:00 min is an interesting little piece. I had to turn the camera back on and resume recording, I stopped thinking it was broken piece! I've always liked the little repurposed tools. The blade at 13:10 is a beauty! There was a footprint from someone right on top of it. I guess it wasn't meant for them! The blade after that is a little beat up, but was made from some exceptionally pretty Dover flint that I thought was worth sharing. The last piece is a nice big sandy the washed out of the dirt wall with the spring rains we had. That spot has been a big producer for big Sandys and pine trees over the years. Maybe one day a Clovis or Cumberland will work its way out for me! Thanks for watching! Please subscribe to keep up with my upcoming videos.

    I didn't know a channel like this existed. I live in WA state haven't been hunting for many years now...used to do so mostly along the banks of the Columbia River...now the banks are either off limits or full of garbage, glass, and needles. I'm so thankful I got to be out there before it got so bad. I have to share the story of my first find. I was not into hunting, my husband was. We went to Wenatchee (home of the Smithsonian apple orchard Clovis cache) so he could hunt with my aunt who was also into it. My husband picked up an elk point out in the dry area, and even my uncle who wasn't a hunter found one, lol. I was bored to tears and when we finally went to the river I was so glad. It was hotter than hades out. I separated from everyone and went to dangle my feet in the water near some gigantic rocks... I was being goofy pretending I was an Indian maiden, talking to the spirits about Indian maiden stuff, just dragging my fingers through the gravel...then I bumped into something immovable, which I grabbed onto and pulled straight up from the ground...it measures about 5" in length. I believe it's a broken spearpoint, broken perhaps in an attempt to spear a fish. From what I've learned, it might be along the lines of 4-6000 years old...certainly not Clovis. I reported it right away to Olympia just in case...we had heard of others getting in trouble, etc. Anyway, it was fine to keep. The best part of that find was the look on my family's faces when it was me that found it...could have pushed them over with a feather. I got the bug and found many more small ones in the years to follow, but boy that was a fun one. Thanks for reminding me of how great it is to ponder history and discover it for ourselves.

    • @Points365
      @Points365  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha that story is too funny! But they shouldn’t have been surprised… it seems to always happen that way. The person that is least likely to make a find, is the one that makes the best find! It’s funny how people who aren’t really into hunting for artifacts will be whistling a different tune after finding one themselves! That’s how it was for me too. I knew they existed. I knew people found them. But when you find your own, it’s just different! Then when you start learning about their history and realize “wow, there were people here 6,000 years ago. Right here in what I call my back yard!” It really puts things into a different perspective. Thanks for sharing that story. It was so funny I had to read it again out loud to share with someone! Thanks for checking out the vid too!

      I don’t know man… I’m pretty set in my ways! Haha like I was telling someone not long ago, I have a tendency to hold my breath when pulling artifacts. Not sure why I do that other than excitement. If anything I’ll pass out and fall face first in the mud if it’s something really crazy! Haha On the other hand, I also enjoy going back and watching my videos just hearing the sounds of nature in the background as opposed to me yapping!

      I don’t find many dovetails, and I definitely wish I found more! They are very pleasing to the eye for sure. But it’s not that I don’t want to holler, I for sure do when the cam goes off almost every time! Haha But I’ve always enjoyed going back and watching my videos without hearing myself and just the sounds of nature. Just a personal preference! Thanks for the comment buddy and for taking the time to check it out!

    Sweet as always!!! You think that last one is a greenbriar bud!?! Those notches are pretty low on that base…can’t believe all the chert rock at that one spot, that makes my palms sweaty seeing all that good rock!! Looks a lot nicer than the chert I find around Nashville…

      Man there are some spots that have so much flint, it really does make me feel like a kid at an Easter egg hunt! Haha But ya know.. I’m admittedly not the best at point id’ing, but I was thinking big sandy on that last one. I can def see the greenbrier in it, but seems like the greenbriers that I find at least usually have some serrations on them. Nash has some good stuff though man! I’ve got lots of nice stuff pulled from there. That’s where I’ve lived my whole life. It pains me to think of what’s underneath all of the development going on.

    Looks like the multi-use is a broke point turned hafted or thumb scraper I have a couple just like that. Also, are those big blades knives or trade blanks (preforms)? Always wondered about that and can't wait till I find one. Keep 'em coming! Found a couple treats myself this weekend, so not as jealous of you at the moment, but that is likely to fade away. Thanks again buddy! I personally think the big piece in question is a blade. But that’s just my opinion. Either way I was excited to find it! The repurposed pieces are always interesting as well, seeing the specialty tools they created, and wondering what they might be used for. Glad you’ve been having some good luck though man! I still haven’t decided what I really think that thing is.. I have about a dozen of so all shaped similar to that varying in sizes to a little smaller, to quite a bit larger. One thing all mine have in common is the indentions where the hafting was, it’s flat on one side, and the cortex is always still on the butt end of it. A couple of mine have somewhat of a polish on the bit end, which makes me think it was used maybe as a hoe. But I guess being used as an adze could maybe put a polish on it too?

    What do you call that last side-notch dart point in your neighborhood? Is it still called a Robinson?.. I've heard others call them a Raddatz, Godar, or a Hickory ridge also. But in my opinion, those are always a bit bigger and broader, with deeper notches. The Robinsons always look like the same dude made them. The thinning strikes at the base are a dead give away. I got one just like it in my case. Just made of different material.

    • @Points365
      @Points365  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking big sandy on that last one… but that tends to be a catch all type for me when they have that style. Like if I found a Robinson… I’d probably call that bad boy a big sandy too! Haha

    • @moemuggy4971
      @moemuggy4971 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Points365 Definitely not a big sandy imo. BS's always look like exhausted Graham caves to me. Big Sandy's and Graham caves are supposed to overlap the Dalton tradition. You can tell by their more concave or "incurvate" base. I think these (what I call a Robinson) come much later. More towards the end of the archaic. The literature just needs to be updated. Robinsons are supposedly out of your area, but just one state over in Missouri, they're all over the ground like pecans.
      But I guess since the little fella is homeless according to the text books, we can call him a big sandy. He is in fact from the same family tree. Just old uncle Sandy's great, great nephew.. haha! or, how about just "Late Archaic Side-Notch?"

      Just because I find the stuff doesn’t mean I know what I’m finding! I could take a stab at it, but I’d possibly be wrong, and for sure be corrected in the rudest way by some on here. So instead of that, I keep quiet and let the sounds of nature be the background noise! Besides, I much more enjoy going back and watching my finds without hearing myself talk! Haha

      No one can truly say with 100% certainty because we were not there in the time and location these were made, humans tend to make educated guesses and put labels on everything! All we can do is classify them to the best of our knowledge which truly is not that much! Some men are boastful and think they know more than others but what it is it’s all truly a guess and general classification!

      Sorry for the belated response… but agreed on what Jeffrey said. Just about any creek has potential. Especially if it’s a creek that never runs dry. You’d be surprised how much gets turned out of the ground when the are bulldozing to build a new subdivision or something as well!
