Hey I have a question for anyone who reads and might know what's up. I have a ktm 250exc 2 stroke. I will ride this damn bike for a day and if I turn this bike off at the end of the day it wont start anymore, we check the spark plug and no spark. There's a very small bit of what I'm guessing is oil. I've been through 3 spark plugs just wanting to ride but I know it can be a few things.. the bike runs and starts fine until the spark plug fucks up. I've adjusted the carb screw to what the manual says and went from 40-1 to 50-1 because that's what all my buddies use. Hasn't solved anything. I think I'm going to buy a carb kit but I don't know if the jets come with the kit. I'm thinking it could be the jets but someone's telling me it can be the struts or the reeds. What do you guys think? I'm going to take this dang thing apart next week but just getting opinions.
@Brody Reed iqu
@Brody Reed so did I it was my first bike my dad used to call it my little red rocket 😁
Do it right and that bike will make a good return great find 💯👍
YEEEEEEEEESSSSS, the hand crank compression test is back in town, whoop whoop
It should idle with the idle screw. The only reason for the cable adjustment is to take the play out of the cable. It’s dangerous to use the cable adjuster for idle speed. When you turn the bars it can make the engine rev. I’m pretty sure you have a leaky head gasket that is putting coolant into the cylinder. If your pump seal is bad you’ll most likely have oil in your radiator. I love the old cr’s. It just needs some tlc to bring it back. I’ll admit that some of the things you do drives me nuts but hey, we all had to learn this stuff at some point lol.
It will only rev when you turn if the cable is not positioned right lol
@@gazking08mx no, the man is right. It should idle with the slide bottomed out.
It should idle with only adjusting it from carburator too
There's an idle adjustment screw on that carb opposite side of the air screw. Do not adjust the idle using the throttle cable. There should be free play in the throttle.
free play some 3 MM to 5 MM is correct.
A resto to make it look as close to the way it came from Honda would be so cool ! I remember seeing these bikes in the showroom as a kid (yes I'm old). On the frame and swingarm try some aircraft stripper and polish/reclear the swingarm. The frame originally should have been red with a blue seat. I loved these little bikes I'm so excited to see it be saved ! Great find Joe !
Dont adjust the idle by the cable on the bars. Get the bike hot and then adjust the idle on the carb.
Dosent matter where you ajust it. Al long as you don't think an idle that high is normal
I'm glad you still make videos because you have so many "top notch mechanics" spilling they toxic bullshit on your videos I love your videos
Need to start doing leakdown test on bikes. They'll never run right if you dont know if you have leaks or not. It would be a great idea if you plan on moving forward mechanically.
If your bike is burning the coolant oil mixture and making the smoke like you said, then your crank seals are bad. There is no connection between the gearcase and the cylinder, so the only way it could burn transmission oil or coolant is through the crank seals
@@johnnyd2434 no kidding, using throttle adjustment for tickover, i could barely watch man!! 🙈
Conner Jones Its unbelivable how long this Guy has worked on bikes, and still doesnt have a clue how an engine works.
And it could of course leak through the head gasket Also.
But it might aswell have been some condensation in the pipe.
And the engine having a bit of Milky oil could Also be from sitting. This Guy is the definition of clueless
same thing happened to my 87.
bad head gasket but its prolly a crank seal lol its old and been riden hard and put away wet
glad to see you fixing up another dirt bike and not a quad. if it is not idling right you probably need to take the emulsion tube out of the carb and clean all the little tiny holes in it , good luck
Love the Roni Mac cut fender 😂👌
I was going to put a comment like this I was wonder if anyone else did!!! 🤣you would make roni mac proud! I bet it has at least 6 or 9 gears!
This was my first race bike when I was a kid! Thanks for bringing the memories back to life man. Great project!

Joe I tell ya my brother, I'm so busy like you, I'm just getting caught up with these videos 3 years later!😮😅
As someone who owns a bunch of farm equipment with small engines, your videos are very helpful.
Thanks so much.

Poor Hondas had a hard life, looks like it's been Ronnie mac'd
He had a little honda stolen! It could be his!! 😁😁😁 screaming baby eagle
fenders arent cut
Actually rebuilding my 1987 YZ80 that I picked up over the summer for $100 at the moment. I was surprised I got it for so cheap and it came with the registration. I love 80s there so fun
I was 8 years old when this came out and if you were lucky enough to have one you were king of the neighborhood lol
Why did I think he licked the oil cap when he was checking the oil 😂😂 19:30
Love your videos, reminds me of my childhood. Only thing you really shouldn’t adjust idle at the throttle. The adjuster at the throttle is the cable adjustment, you need 1/4” free play to stop throttle surges while riding. When you adjust from the throttle you are taking all that free play away. If you can’t get it to idle with the idle screw there is a problem somewhere, usually just a carb issue. Besides that keep up the good videos, keep learning and keep the passion alive👍👍
Dear Santa: for Christmas I would like a compression tester, micro air guage and a 100 gallon drum of WD 40
Wow Honda cr 80 honestly it’s the first dirt bike i ever touched .....upstate NY.......GREAT MEMORIES
I was so stoked for this video and im stoked for the rest of the videos to come out, this is gonna be fun
It actually seems to run pretty damn good. Looking forward to see what you do to this. Buuuuurp!!
That white smoke is most likely not coolant its means you have alittle more oil in gas mixture then you need but it's ok especially when it hasn't run in awhile👍🤙
Rad bike Joe. Those things were quick with little kids riding them!👍👍👍
Some of those Hondas have the idle adjust tied into the choke knob. Try twisting the choke knob in or out as needed. You do not want to adjust the idle by tightening the cable. Something else is wrong if that is how you are adjusting the idle. That little hose is just for carb venting, it allows the float bowl area to be at normal atmosphere pressure, not pressurized or vacuum. Should not affect idle at all without that hose.
Hey joe, just a tip man when ur starting a two stroke you don’t have to blip the throttle on every kick, might make for easier starting if you stopped.
I would LOVE to see a 70s vintage dirtbike dressed up in modern fashion!
A aftermarket build.
A friend of mine had an old 80's cr and had it fully rebuilt it was a rocke kept up with the modern bikes and in come cases beat them.
those cr80s had the best power to weight ratio
Use citrus based Paint stripper on the plastic. Then wet sand them with fine sand paper to bring color back.
Here’s your chance to turn a beat up nasty looking bike into something really nice. I’m not talking about with bling parts. Getting it back to original would be awesome. Silencer sounds hollow. That’s the least of that bike’s issues but just throwing that out there. Tare it down and split it apart. Make this one your “restore” project. That bike deserves it.
You need to loosen the lock nut so you can adjust the idle. The lock not is the knurled thing right up against the throttle and it's keeping the adjustment from taking place. Also, isn't there a screw on the carb. that's for adjusting how far the needle and slide move down the barrel?
Great videos .Since it won't idle by the idle screw check the needle on the throttle slide if someone had it apart they might have the c clip to high might have to move it down a Grove most are in the center Grove
Water pump seal and bearing kit from Ebay and a clutch cover gasket if the top end has o rings build it up with motoseal gasket maker and let it dry overnight and then put orings in place
That bike will definitely be a great competition with that 125 my old 87 cr80 used to beat 250’s and all
If I'm not mistaken you can adjust the idle by turning the choke knob forward or backwards. That's how my 1990 cr and rm 250s do it
Still worth changing the seals make sure there’s no pitting on the impeller shaft if it has new inner or outer seal will still leak! Loved the video them old 80’s kick it 😂 😂
Very much looking forward to this series of videos!
the frame are red original in 1987
Einar 87 was an incredible year for Honda's. The 87 125 was the first year for case reed induction. They are super durable and run for ever. I had an 87 CR 250 that I fell in love with.
He literally said “painted black”
I think the shock is supposed to be like that for the airbox/ boot to go to the carb. I’ve had an 1984 cr60 and it’s the same way
You should vapor hone and completely restore it...these will bring up to 3000$ restored
pmedic88 completely agree
Replace everything on it make it look brand new
Johnny D Shit we’ll see
@@johnnyd2434 well there's no reason to do a project if you're going to lose money on it
potatoking you can keep it and ride it, money isnt everything. Working on a project is also fun
Vhjvb Hjb but that’s Also how he makes money. He has plenty of bikes.
Connor White Yes, if youre doing projects to make money its different.
He Said That there is no Point to do a project if you cant make money.
Aldo he is making money on ripping people of. He does shit paintJobs, dangerous bodge Jobs and cover ups. Just to make as much money as possible.
You can do projects to make money, but there is a right way of doing it
I mean this man might not always know what hes doing and be a professional but gosh damn hes just a curious guy like the rest of us let him do his builds it's not affecting you
Right? What's up with these a holes when most of us were learning people were more cool about stuff, motors blow shit breaks ,big deal, that's how u learn
Bro thank you
might as well have taken the motor apart and painted the piston black too ffs
Love 87 CRs, the problem with small wheel bikes is they cost as much as 250s to restore cosmetically but no one wants to pay 250 prices to buy one.
could look cool
All that paint will scrape off with a stanley blade
or just pressure wash it all off
Good job bro..keep em flowing 🤙🤙
Rode the hell out of my kdx 80 in my teens that bike ran forever didn't know anything about bikes back then but mixing gas and changing plugs even put it in a crick just flipped her over and popped the plug out and ran it good out 80s just run 👍
so beautiful to listen to this old beast
A lot of times the reason someone paints a whole bike black is because they stole it from someone local and they don't want the person looking for it to never notice it was their bike if saw it.
Fix it up so 2 cans of wd40
Don't forget the heat gun
.......and a carb clean
In all seriousness tho I enjoy his content just wish he dug into more of the projects seems a bit lazy
Gonna have to set your mixture screws to get idle right.
Think your best bet for this bike is to take the motor out and see what’s wrong with it besides it would look a lot better if you striped it down went through the whole bike and sand blasted the frame gave her some primer and paint because she’s in need for a complete rebuild still it should be a good little series
First!! By the way your videos are extremely inspirational and our friend actually got the kx80 from you a couple months ago. Keep it up!!!!!!
oh that's awesome!
Seriously you should not be doing what he is doing. His methods are straight up dangerous
I have a Cr85 and the power is amazing but I need a few parts for it right noe
Tom Bateman what you got for parts
Tom Bateman lmk ASAP what parts you got
Tom Bateman do you got any back bearings
Tom Bateman do you got grips
Tom Bateman do how much for grips and back bearings
Oh freak yea another build
You can buy spray that can take spray paint off with a hose, I would look into that, instead of a heat gun
I have a 81 cr80r can't find anything for the bikes motor locked up...I'm in ny nothing for them bikes in the state...nice project
Use some paint stripper on the plastics and then sos them and they should look brand new
Love your videos and helpful too 👍🏻
Did you clean the jets with a needle to get crap out? You said blowing out and that doesn’t help if they aren’t gone through
Leak test! Mix 32:1 minimum plug chop to confirm. Look these things up if you're unfamiliar. Step up your game bro it'll bring you major credibility and provide us more content. I like and understand why and what you do and I give you credit so the advice I give is to only make you better.
Do it right. Dont cheap out on this one
Todd Coleman not an option 😂
This bone head doesn't know how too....
It's his bikes and quads bitches
Good luck finding plastics I have a 93 and that’s hell to find parts for
as for the shock, i had a cr80 1995 and it was off to the side so i think it is supposed to be like that
22:45 SHE'S ALIVEEEEEEE!!!!
hey i have the same issue with my rm80 it won’t idle can you message me back and explain what you were doing ? please and thank you
PeytonKnown on the carb there’s 2 screws idle and pilot in the middle of the carb where there’s a hump or where your throttle cable goes tighten that but like 1/4 turns increments
Front suspension prolly has little to no milkshake in it. Change the fork oil, if the seals aren’t leaking, should be fine.
Without the air filter it would be normal to get a lean idle, but you get the opposite, mid throttel and idle are way to rich.
You might need a leaner idle jet or maybe you just made the hole larger while clining it.
You might want to replace both crank seal, water pump seals, reads and head gasket
After that you should be ok
I dont know why people are such twats. You're learning.
He's been oiling brake rotors and blowing into reed valves for years now, I'm convinced he is a genius and this channel is just a goof
People that talk so much have probably never rode a dirt bike
He doesn’t learn. He doesn’t pay attention.
can’t you put air in the forks to stiffen them?
28:50 was the best part 😂
I have a cr80, have you checked the engine vin ?
Will you do a engine rebuild ? And also my kx60 had the gray kinda oil so it’s needing a seal kit
GEE WIZ THAT AIR FILTER LOOKS LIKE A WORN OUT BUFFING PAD LOL
90 rm 80 was the holy grail growing up cr an yz was a tie then kx
Is he saying “tag” or “teg” at the start talking about the cr80 i.d plate
Love watching your videos bro
You can also get brown , Milky and foamy oil from not changing it.
What do you do with all these vehicles??
I had a 1987 cr250r that I sold about 3 weeks ago😥 just needed to be resleeved😭
i love vintage bikes
Rips it down the road without a filter causing a lean condition which overheated it and blew out the gaskets.
Seems like it needs a top end rebuild
I’m getting a dirt bike soon it is going too be a mega max 212 cc dirt bike with a headlight on it
there is paint that i bought that is that exact original color i used to have one and i bought a new rear fender and it came white so i spray painted it
Wait for the day this guys tailgate drops while he’s driving and his shit goes flying off the back.
love the vid and love the cr80s :)
First project build honda cr 80r
O Riley’s sells a paint remover for plastic that works amazing, 3 or 4 cans of that stuff and that bike would look 10 times better
So my teacher brought in his 1983 yz490 and that thing is a bitch to put on the carb it's so tight in there!
Its going to be hard to get the idle down when it has no resistance on air flow with no air filter.... Plus u should not use the cable adjuster to adjust the idle because if u turn hard it will change it but its whatever I love the older Honda CR's
I don't recommend sharing your bikes VIN online bro. Cool video though!
Was this Ronnie macs old bike the fender is cut
Using Channel locks to take a spark plug out can easily break it by proper tools
Put some air in them there air fourks theres valve stem caps on the tops of them put some air in em they will stiffen up
I mean im used to "destroyed" bikes and i looked at this thing my first thought was "duud its mint condition for sure not destroyed use a knife to scratch off old paint from plastics use paint winer or whtever that is (im from europe) to get the color off the rims replace the rear fender (looks broken) replace the old fuel lines n stuff oil the chain replace the oil and that stuff that goes into the radiators and see if it has anything else
Ya got me paying attention now!
You should restore this bike and keep it and then get an 85, 250 4 stroke and a 450 and another cr500 so that you have all the Hondas: cr8,cr85,cr125,cr250,crf250,crf450 and a cr500
Tom Bateman set up a go fund me and I will🤣
After this project, you should get a Yamaha Blaster
Top end bearing is toast
