Sorry for the long rundown of that bikes issues but it makes sense to go that far into something.

I got the same bike from my friend when I was a teenager. His neighbor gave it to him for free and he didn't know how to work on it so he gave it to me. It was seized up and I'll never forget my dad saying "we really shouldn't do this, it's not the right way" and giving the kickstarter a firm whack with a sledgehammer, after letting some WD-40 soak in the cylinder. Broke loose though! It was magical hearing that beast run for the first time. For my 13th birthday my dad got me a new cables and what not to get rideable. Those were the days. I thought I had the fastest bike in town until my buddy with a newer RM 125 absolutely smoked me 😂 I was drooling over his inverted forks. Sorry for the long story but if you made it this far thanks for reading
The nice thing about these DT400's is since it's pretty much the same engine used in the IT400 and YZ400 besides the engine base you can just swap a YZ400 cylinder and piston on to it to make it spicier. The DT's were tuned for low end pull for when out in the trails. The YZ400 had all the oomph to it being a race bike and all.
I'm not exactly following you? Swapping out cylinder and piston can be done by bore job and oversize piston. Changing connecting rod will change stroke and cylinder head might change compression ratio.rejetting carb or different carb usually is included to improve performance after Changing stock specs
I am 62yrs old and just got back into two stroke dirt bikes. As a teen in the 70's, I had a Bultaco Lobito 175 and Suzuki RM125. Got into cars in '79 and never had another dirt bike until this summer. I bought a '78 Bultaco 370 Pursang from the original dealer we bought parts from in the 70's and also a '74 Bultaco 250 Alpina project for $300 from a private party. New rings, circlips and carb and she is up and running. Nothing beats the sound and smell of a two smoke! Love your videos BTW! 👍
When I was 12 my dad got me a mid 70's model Bultaco 250 Pursang. Rode the crap out of that thing for a couple of years. Would love to have another one just for the nostalgia.
i'm a 2stroke tuner, these engines have the most effective power between 9 and 12k rpm, you'l be surprised what happens if you hit that 9k rpm :))) the reedvalves are leaking, but are still good enough, just flip them around, best way to get that flat dent out of the exhaust is pumping it up with a greasegun, block both ends of the exhaust as close as possible to the part you want to fix, weld on a little nut on the pipe with a little hole for the greasegun, fill the pipe first with grease, then just pump it up, works great, finding a replacement can be quite hard for this bike, cleaning is easy, might want to run if after cleaning for like 20 minutes without the muffler, to get all the grease out, and dont mess up the muffler, no need to remove the greasegun nipple

Missing fenders and dented pipe after hitting a car! Apparently no mice or critters in your area unless it's been kept inside a well sealed heated garage. Doesn't take Columbo to look at the condition of the seat and front forks ,wheel to cry foul.still bad ass 2 stroke non the less.
For the pipe. you can drill a hole or 2 or 3 on the good side of the pipe large enough to get a brass or steel drift in and use it to knock the pipe back out and into the shape you need. Then weld the holes back up when done.
or fold a bicycle innertube in half and use a wire hanger with a U bend on one end pinch to the tube so can jam it up the pipe. Pump up the innertube and unbent :) but can cause cracks sometimes depending how bad the dent is, but 95% of the times works pretty well for not much work.

I don't know where you live in Australia but the drugs must be good to spend 2500 au dollars on a piece of sh$?T that needs a full restoration and thousands of dollars spent on it, I'm in country Victoria Australia 100 bucks sounds about right.

To get the dent in the exhaust pipe out you can use the leak down test kit you used the other week. Put bungs in both ends of the exhaust and inflate to about 4 lbs (very low pressure) then heat the dent with a blow lamp. I used to use an oxy acetelene torch which is much better but that steel is thin and should heat up to red hot quickly with a blow lamp. Use MAP gas as it gets hotter than propane. The dents come out like magic. You can make you own rubber bungs to do this or even temparary weld over the end of the pipe and use a tyre valve. I have seen this tried on petrol tanks but dont do that. They spread open from the centre and it ruins them. I have done this myself and Ive seen many bikes on your channel that would benfit from this. It would make a good video. Regards from Marcus in England

Max for my age and police had me pushing it more than once.i traded it in for 84 650 nighthawk took the state sponsored rider safety course to get class M and first week out on nighthawk I was behind a trailer with my old P.E. .I installed Answer aluminum silencer and it still had the homemade plate bracket which I confirmed was my bike i traded in. .honda dealer gave me 400 on trade. And at 13 I had kawasaki kd125 oil injected that I don't remember giving away.talk about long stories.

My dad's good friend bought a big bore Yamaha 2 stroke when they first came out in the '70's. He's got some hysterical stories about what an absolute animal that bike was, especially when everyone else was riding 125cc or maybe 250cc machines.
My friends brothers friend let me ride one a Yamaha before they were designated YZ. Not sure which one. I was only 12 or 13. That thing was really touchy on the throttle so I sped up into 5th and then goosed it without the clutch. It came way up on a wheelie. Scared the crap out of me!!

This bike has a cable operated compression release. Did you check the function of it? Take the exhaust pipe off, drill small holes and center punch the dented part out and weld up the holes. Used pipes start at $200.
I had the 76 MX400 and the engine looks and sounds like mine did. Hold on and prepare to be amazed if you ever get into the power band. I ran 6oz oil to the gallon.
My wife and I got a good chuckle when you said that had to be the sketchiest bike you've ever ridden! She and I used to ride some wackos back in the day.
There is nothing like the sound of a 2 stroke. The video brings me back to the good old days when all dirt bikes, moto cross bikes were 2 stroke. Its rough but wow! What a fun bike.
That’s a familiar sound! I had the 1975 DT 400. It had the classic Yami black and yellow tank. Great bike and a fun low end beast of a bike. Used it in dirt, trails, roads and highways. Great memories

Had to write when you mentioned the breaking leg..I had a 360 Yamaha enduro back in the 70's and if you didn't know HOW to get your leg out of the way when kicking it over it would kill the back of your knees and calf's..black and blue most of the time..wicked fast and a whole lot of fun to ride

Those yamaha dts and mxs are amongst some of the best bikes ever made. As reliable as 2 stroke can ever be. Years of problem free riding in those things. The big bores are torquey and fun. Keep the wheels turning on those old machines man
What a great buy for a $100 bucks! I just bought a 1990 Yamaha Phazer II with electric start snowmobile for a $100 bucks. It ran when I got it but just needed a few cosmetics done to it. Runs great and looks great now. Good to know good finds are still available!
That DT400 was a beast with some porting, raised compression and a after market pipe. One thing to know is oil injection pump is very prone to failure. What was usually done, was just go to pre mix and save the engine. I can’t remember if I removed the pump or just made a block off.
For such a rough state starting off I thought you'd have more problems but the bike definitely deserves some love. I could see the angle of the handlebars when you were going straight, way off lol, and you could see the mud flying from the camera you were wearing. Great bike in my opinion and could be way better. 👍❤️
I had a '78 DT125. Was a great dual purpose bike. Had the same color scheme. Would go through pretty much anything. Road it for years on and off the road.

Them DT series are one of the best models Yamaha have ever made. They are just very reliable. That is why you can still buy them brandnew in some countries like Columbia, the 125 and 175's. Mine is a 1998 125 in stock form and never had a repair in it's lifetime except for having replaced a new piston ring and brakeshoes. All lights are intact and still runs great.

Used to have a 1976 Suzuki rm370 I bought off a buddies dad for $400. That bike was scary fast even though it was worn out a bit. We ended up swapping it into a Suzuki 250r quad frame which made it even more crazy. Love seeing these old bikes get brought back to life.
Glad to see you using heat gun to remove the gas line and not a razor knife I’ve come across way to May fittings damaged and mysteriously leak when fitted with new line…..
I had 1975 DT 400. What a great bike..I wish I still has it. These bikes were incredibly so durable . Built tough to last with great power. 2nd gear was amazing bring back great memories seeing this today🙂🛵
Joe, this was a bargain for sure! Congrats! Yamaha 250 twins absolutely dominated the 250 Road Racing class for many years! That 400 should be a monster once you sort out the forks and other details!
Yeah this is a very sweet deal for 100 bucks no matter condition. Lots of potential. Forks can be disassembled and probably just clean and de-rust to get working again. Maybe a swap later but they can at least move with a rebuild. Bars are easy to straighten or of course just replace. Definitely worth getting fenders for it. Rebuild or replace the seat pan, a few other details and she's ready to rip.
Great video - best thing with that bike would be to sell as-is and avoid the significant spend in front of it. If someone had a dt250 with blown up engine it might be a great match.
Back in the 1980's I saw an ad in the newspaper for a Yamaha YZ-465. When I got to the guy's house, he came to the door with his arm in a cast! That beast was big, heavy, and powerful. I wish I still had it!

The guy is a legend, but after his fifth impaired charge, he might have some addiction issues… LOL! Don’t worry about the front forks being locked up solid-it doesn’t matter when you’re in a wheelie in every gear!🤣

I know nothing about this channel. Been following for a while now. I'm guessing that Joe either works for a dealership from home or is related to people who own one. Too many bikes/vehicles pass through his hands to explain otherwise, though I could easily be mistaken. He may also have a dealer's license himself. Not sure what the laws are in WI. concerning how many bikes you can sell in a year if there's even a limit. I just know that he doesn't need to market them to the viewers, since there's never an offer to sell any of them, and all offers to buy seem to go completely ignored. Great channel!

Glad you can find something for what it is really worth, Way too many people on Market Place or Craigs list want a lot for old dirt bikes. It takes a great amount of time and money to get them going again, If you do not have the skill level to do the work stay away from projects otherwise it will set in the corner for years and years undone. These are the type of people that want to much for project bikes and Cars because they think they have a peace of gold but what they really have is a money pit.
I had a 74 dt360 we picked up for $200 when i was 16, only thing it needed was a carb clean it was glazed , and clutch plates were stuck. I disconnected the yamaha oil system, Ran pre mix , cleaned the rusty tank and it ran for a while started every time super reliable bike. I'd buy another today if i can find one. Good find.
those oil injection systems were junk, did the same thing, ran premix, and had my buddies dad cut the tank and welded it up with a harley tank to get almost 5.5 gallon tank on my 360. could go all day without a fillup, missed that bike, sold it for a yz465 and that was a beast
I had a Yamaha MX 360. Can’t remember if 73 or 74. It was fast . Great motor back in the day. My roommate took it out one night to go see his girlfriend probably 25 miles on the backroads. 😂 great times. Love the 2 strokes back in the day. Easy to work on. Nice video

Love Bultaco’s. I have a few Alina’s 85, 97 138 and a 159 Sherpa and a 75 matador . They ride well.

Graduated in 77 had a bull taco. Fun times also had a Suzuki 250 2 stroke. Fast shit back then.

That 400 engine was based off the earlier YZ 400 engines....detuned of course....I bet it had a peak HP of 30 at 5k....I think the carb is only 36mm

This bike has a cable operated compression release. Did you check the function of it? Take the exhaust pipe off, drill small holes and center punch the dented part out and weld up the holes. Used pipes start at $200.
I had the 76 MX400 and the engine looks and sounds like mine did. Hold on and prepare to be amazed if you ever get into the power band. I ran 6oz oil to the gallon.
My wife and I got a good chuckle when you said that had to be the sketchiest bike you've ever ridden! She and I used to ride some wackos back in the day.
There is nothing like the sound of a 2 stroke. The video brings me back to the good old days when all dirt bikes, moto cross bikes were 2 stroke. Its rough but wow! What a fun bike.
That’s a familiar sound! I had the 1975 DT 400. It had the classic Yami black and yellow tank. Great bike and a fun low end beast of a bike. Used it in dirt, trails, roads and highways. Great memories

Had to write when you mentioned the breaking leg..I had a 360 Yamaha enduro back in the 70's and if you didn't know HOW to get your leg out of the way when kicking it over it would kill the back of your knees and calf's..black and blue most of the time..wicked fast and a whole lot of fun to ride

My first street legal dirt bike was a '74 Yamaha DT 360 (green tank). It would climb steep hills just above an idle. Plenty of torque.

Those yamaha dts and mxs are amongst some of the best bikes ever made. As reliable as 2 stroke can ever be. Years of problem free riding in those things. The big bores are torquey and fun. Keep the wheels turning on those old machines man

What a great buy for a $100 bucks! I just bought a 1990 Yamaha Phazer II with electric start snowmobile for a $100 bucks. It ran when I got it but just needed a few cosmetics done to it. Runs great and looks great now. Good to know good finds are still available!

That DT400 was a beast with some porting, raised compression and a after market pipe. One thing to know is oil injection pump is very prone to failure. What was usually done, was just go to pre mix and save the engine. I can’t remember if I removed the pump or just made a block off.
For such a rough state starting off I thought you'd have more problems but the bike definitely deserves some love. I could see the angle of the handlebars when you were going straight, way off lol, and you could see the mud flying from the camera you were wearing. Great bike in my opinion and could be way better. 👍❤️
I had a '78 DT125. Was a great dual purpose bike. Had the same color scheme. Would go through pretty much anything. Road it for years on and off the road.
I had a 1977 DT100, great bike! Looks like the exact same tank/colours as this bike

55 now.I was last on a bike in 84..Rode a lot of different bikes as a kid..Enjoy seeing you repairing some of the models that I had fun on.

Them DT series are one of the best models Yamaha have ever made. They are just very reliable. That is why you can still buy them brandnew in some countries like Columbia, the 125 and 175's. Mine is a 1998 125 in stock form and never had a repair in it's lifetime except for having replaced a new piston ring and brakeshoes. All lights are intact and still runs great.

Used to have a 1976 Suzuki rm370 I bought off a buddies dad for $400. That bike was scary fast even though it was worn out a bit.
We ended up swapping it into a Suzuki 250r quad frame which made it even more crazy. Love seeing these old bikes get brought back to life.
Motor looks like a bigger version of a blaster motor, would be a cool swap for a blaster 🤔

I had 1975 DT 400. What a great bike..I wish I still has it. These bikes were incredibly so durable . Built tough to last with great power. 2nd gear was amazing bring back great memories seeing this today🙂🛵
Joe, this was a bargain for sure! Congrats! Yamaha 250 twins absolutely dominated the 250 Road Racing class for many years! That 400 should be a monster once you sort out the forks and other details!

Yeah this is a very sweet deal for 100 bucks no matter condition.
Lots of potential. Forks can be disassembled and probably just clean and de-rust to get working again. Maybe a swap later but they can at least move with a rebuild.
Bars are easy to straighten or of course just replace. Definitely worth getting fenders for it. Rebuild or replace the seat pan, a few other details and she's ready to rip.

Great video - best thing with that bike would be to sell as-is and avoid the significant spend in front of it. If someone had a dt250 with blown up engine it might be a great match.
Back in the 1980's I saw an ad in the newspaper for a Yamaha YZ-465. When I got to the guy's house, he came to the door with his arm in a cast!
That beast was big, heavy, and powerful.

Another great job getting an old bike running! What a hilarious story the seller told about being hammered out of his mind, showing off in front of his buddies, and then getting impaired. The guy is a legend, but after his fifth impaired charge, he might have some addiction issues… LOL! Don’t worry about the front forks being locked up solid-it doesn’t matter when you’re in a wheelie in every gear!🤣
I don’t know how you find these deals! Everything I find under $800 needs a top end or is missing half the parts and the condition of the engine is a total gamble.

I know nothing about this channel. Been following for a while now. I'm guessing that Joe either works for a dealership from home or is related to people who own one. Too many bikes/vehicles pass through his hands to explain otherwise, though I could easily be mistaken. He may also have a dealer's license himself. Not sure what the laws are in WI. concerning how many bikes you can sell in a year if there's even a limit. I just know that he doesn't need to market them to the viewers, since there's never an offer to sell any of them, and all offers to buy seem to go completely ignored. Great channel!

Glad you can find something for what it is really worth, Way too many people on Market Place or Craigs list want a lot for old dirt bikes. It takes a great amount of time and money to get them going again, If you do not have the skill level to do the work stay away from projects otherwise it will set in the corner for years and years undone. These are the type of people that want to much for project bikes and Cars because they think they have a peace of gold but what they really have is a money pit.
I had a 74 dt360 we picked up for $200 when i was 16, only thing it needed was a carb clean it was glazed , and clutch plates were stuck. I disconnected the yamaha oil system, Ran pre mix , cleaned the rusty tank and it ran for a while started every time super reliable bike. I'd buy another today if i can find one. Good find.
those oil injection systems were junk, did the same thing, ran premix, and had my buddies dad cut the tank and welded it up with a harley tank to get almost 5.5 gallon tank on my 360. could go all day without a fillup, missed that bike, sold it for a yz465 and that was a beast

I had a Yamaha MX 360. Can’t remember if 73 or 74. It was fast . Great motor back in the day. My roommate took it out one night to go see his girlfriend probably 25 miles on the backroads. 😂 great times. Love the 2 strokes back in the day. Easy to work on. Nice video
