I order the 6 pack!! Thank You for showing this procedure!! My Grandsons and I will have Fun making Rocks Shiny!! I have Subscribed! I see a few Video I want to check out!!! Have a Nice Weekend!!! 🤗❤️👍🙋🏻♀️
I love that method too, but you have to be careful when it gets cold out. if the ones you spray gloss on are left outside then the gloss you have sprayed on will crack and makes a big mess of them and only way to fix them at that point is put them in a tumbler.
HOWDY, Brian! 👋🏼 I'm so glad I didn't scare you away. Are you going to spray your rocks? I think it works great. Sometimes, tumbling is overrated, but it's great to have options. Let me know!! POLISH ON!! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
I'm a lifelong 'rocker', 73 now and still hooked! Used the nail polish method when we were kids, then got a tumbler, but I actually prefer to just have shiny rocks. Here in Scotland it's wet more often than dry, so I don't have to lick too often, lol. I'm an artist and there are quite a few acrylic mediums and varnishes that do the job well and I always have on hand, but the spray coats are quicker. We have some beautiful rocks around the coastal areas, fossils too (the leaf and fern types are so lovely) but last year I finally made the trip to Iona and came back with bags of Iona marble. Iona is a very spiritual site and the stones hold that energy, so wouldn't put them in a tumbler. Good to know I'm not the only crazy around, love your zany humour, ❤ from Scotland ❤
Howdy! 👋🏼 Love your name!! Wow, you live an enviable life there in Scotland. I had to Google the Iona marble. Beautiful!! Thank you so much for watching! Nice to meet you, my fellow ZANY ROCKHOUND!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
I absolutely love your spirit and the humor you add to your video. I'm addicted to rocks myself, and this is not a bad idea at all. Thankyou for the smiles.
Howdy, Dragon! 👋🏼 Yay, I love meeting rockhounds!! Thank you! Yes, I like this idea for a quick shine on fragile rocks or JUST BECAUSE!! Let me know if you try it. ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
I prefer the tumbler polished rocks better overall. But, if it's a small stone that you like the appearance of and know it will tumble into nothing in the end, a good coat of spray on gloss appears to be a great alternative! Great idea, thanks for sharing! Thanks for the video! Eric 👍
Howdy, Eric! 👋🏻 I agree with you that each polish type is subjective and/or dependent on how small or fragile a rock is in terms of surviving all tumbling stages to look worth a darn. It's definitely great to have options! I appreciate your watching and feedback. Do you tumble very often? TUMBLE ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨💦
HOWDY, April! 👋🏼 Smart! What a coincidence, as I have a video coming out on Sunday about using fingernail polish! Glad to know this works well. I agree!! ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
I’ve used clear nail polish as well…but I think this spray method she shows in the video is going to be a much faster technique! You can cover more rocks in less time! I’m anxious to try it!
Howdy! 👋🏼 Heck yeah, this is better than fingernail polish, but good to have options depending on the tools on hand. I hope you try this Rust-Oleum spray as it works great! POLISH ON! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
I think it depends on the rock and also whether you want them completely smooth. I get much more pleasure from using nail polish than a rock tumbler. I like the unevenness. However, some rocks are so weathered, that tumbling enhances them in a way, painting them can't. I do not understand the crowd that dismisses painting outright. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Painting also allows people with limited space, income, to enjoy their collections more. I am glad you posted this. When I run out of my current supply of nail polish, I will try it. I use nail polish exclusively on what I call my "littles." Rocks that are tiny versions of bigger rocks, I have found. When I have to downsize, in my old age, I hope to take my "littles" with me.
HOWDY, Diann! 👋🏼 OMG, I literally made a video TODAY on using nail polish that I'll post next weekend. Everything you said is EXACTLY why nail polish IS a perfectly valid option for polishing rocks instead of all the hassles that come with tumbling. Wow, it's like you had a camera over my head today!! I love your positive outlook, and "littles" is so cute and accurate. Let me know if you try the Rust-Oleum spray method and what you think. ROCK ON!! 😃👍🏻🪨⛏️
I think this is a great alternative for those more fragile rocks that won't survive the tumbler or take a shine. But I do love me a smooth, glassy stone.
Great results in this experiment. The best part of it, that the colors are staying under the coat as if rocks would be wet. I did Rust-Oleum on shells, and then capture them in seed beads, and made a set of earrings and a bracelet. Looking great. The only thing I would prefer the tumbler over the spray is that if rock will be in constant touch by hand, then the coat will run off eventually, and another part of discomfort - scratches on the surface of polish spray. Has to be handle careful, otherwise it would lose the decorative look. For shells spray works great as they could not be treated in tumbler, still careful handling required.
At the home improvement store, out n the garden section.. There is a product called "the wet look." it's to seal pavers etc in your garden. But it works AWESOME to keep your rocks looking like they are actually wet. There are other products that claim the same thing. Ignore them. The ONLY one that does what you want, is the wet look. Trust me. It's magic. ❤
Ok, I Googled it and am still coming up with multiple brands, such as Behr, Black Diamond, Valspar, Glaze 'N Seal, etc. You said to avoid the wannabes, hence wondering the specific one you said is better than the others. I'm still not sure which one you recommend. Many thanks!!
HOWDY, Kristi! 👋🏼 I agree tumbled is superior, but I'm glad you also like the spray. It's great to have options depending on the type of rock or no patience, space or moola to get a tumbler! I appreciate your feedback more than you know. Thank YOU!! POLISH ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨💦
Yes, it's definitely a quick, QUIET and cheap way to polish rocks, smooth or rough! I'd love to see how they turn out!! You can post pics on my subreddit if you're interested. No pressure, of course!! ROCK ON!! 😃👍🏻🪨⛏️ www.reddit.com/r/CacklingChick/s/CphVV8sfYw
Try cold wax, a medium used by artists to alter pigments. It enhances the rock color with a matte finish. Apply like shoe polish, let dry a few minutes then polish with a cloth.
Howdy, Esther! 👋🏼 I was actually looking for wax today while at Walmart. I haven't heard of this cold wax method, though. I need to Google how to do that. Thanks!! WAX ON!! 😂👍🏻🪨🕯
Two words: cooking spray...or just dip in oil...the oil trick I heard used for cracks in delicate gemstones. I found the spray a far faster method and added benifit-indoor use and kid/pet safe non toxic with super shiny result. Happy hounding!! ♡ $RockFairy
Howdy, RockFairy! 👋🏼 Thanks for the DIY polishing tip! I actually did cooking spray on a rock in a desperate attempt for the wet look when doung a thumbnail pic for a video. Worked like a charm, and over time, it still has an enhanced color. You're so smart!! Thanks again!! 😁👍🏻🪨💦
Howdy, Chapstick! 👋🏼 Love that name!! You're absolutely correct, AND it's great to have different techniques for similar results. I appreciate you and your kind words. Curious - do you also tumble? ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
@CacklingChick I wanted to but never have for exactly the reasons you listed. 🤭I've always been a collector even gave my kiddo the bug. She picks up more than me lately. Might try this with her. Cheers to you & yours, hope you have a lovely day. Your garden space is wonderful btw:)
Rockhounding is a wonderful hobby to bond with friends and family! Have fun with your kiddo! Mibe is grown and out of the house. Wah!! Thank you for the compliment on the yard. Have a great day, ROCK ON, and yack with you later! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
Howdy, Tammy! 👋🏼 Congrats on the move and my condolences on the loss of your rock tumbler!! I hope it'll turn up eventually!! Yes, this is a great alternative for polising rocks and shells, and who knows what else. The shine is permanent as long as the items are kept indoors, out of the sun, and little handling. There are similar sprays resistent to UV rays that could also be used. Let me know if you try it and like the results? POLISH ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
You would get a smoother finish with a gel polish and a UV lamp or with resin. I did this on an amethyst ring where the facets had worn down and were dull looking, and now it's sparkles again!
Howdy Lady! 👋🏼 Pardon my ignorance, but is the gel polish a nail polish or something else? Also, what type of resin do you recommend? Food-safe or... ? I really know nothing about them, but are on my list to research. Also, I'm leary of super toxic items. (I'm a WIMP!) Glad it worked on your amethyst ring! Thanks for your suggestions! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
Love it! I love the finished product. I often find polished in creek that are depressed when I get home. This will be worth a try to get the awesome colors I saw at first!
Howdy, Jonathon! 👋🏼 So glad you found this video helpful! I agree it's depressing when you bring rocks home and they're blahsay once dry. Let me know if you try the Rust-Oleum spray and what you think. POLISH ON!! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
HOWDY! 👋🏼 Yay, I'm so happy you like this method. Let me know if you try it! It's a game-changer for those without a tumbler, time, and on and on! SPRAY ON!! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
@@CacklingChick I purchased a rocket tumbler at Walmart last weeks in Toys. Thought I would try it out. BUT...YOUR WAU WILL BE WAY BETTER FOR US!!! I will report back. @@CacklingChick I wanted a double tumbler from Harbor Freight. Waiting for a $20. Off Coupon. Then it will cost same as the ones from Walmart. $40. I was born near the Atlantic Ocean off the Coast of Hunstaton, England. At 6 weeks old my parents, mom born and raised in England, dad born in Detroit Michigan serving USA at Sculthorp moved me to America at the age of 6 weeks. I'm 66 now and have NEVER been back to the land I was born in. I dream of Rocks and Sea Glass. I guess we all do, but the Sea calls me back. But I am proud to be a US Citizen, Not Born but Raised. God Bless Both Countries! WOW...CAN I go on and on... Put the 2 of us together, And I'm sure Fun will Be Had. Blessings.
For more delicate rocks, I keep a container of them with my acrylic pours and use any leftover acrylic to coat them. They are shiny and safe from the ravages of the tumbler.
HOWDY! 👋🏼 Brilliant! Can I assume it's a basic acrylic clear gloss paint you use on rocks? I've never used acrlic paints. Do tell! Please and thank you! ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨🎨
I've tried rock tumbling, for one thing it's noisy in a small area, it's messy and expensive to constantly have to change the grit. I've used even clear nail polish before but I like your plan 😊 Nice results!
HOWDY, JANICE! 👋🏼 I agree with all that. It's great to have options, such as nail polish or this Rust-Oleum spray. Let me know if you try it and like the results. I like mine and they're sitting in a bowl! ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
I guess it's a matter of preference. The more Natural look or the machined processed look. The natural came out just as shinny as the processed. The processed has more of a glow due to no pitting and allowing the light to bounce off and reflect more. I like both. My issue is the amount of money that goes into the processed rocks. The tumbler, the maintenance of the moter, the grinding grains, the electricity, and the patience of the process. I guess because of all that combined I prefer the natural😂🎉
Howdy, Jill! 👋🏼 Excellent comparison!! I also like both and love to have alternative methods to shine rocks depending on the type of rock. You hit the nail on PATIENCE!! Thanks for watching and your feedback!! POLISH ON!! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
Howdy, Ginger! 👋🏼 You're very lucky to have grown up along California's Central Coast! I love that area as there are LESS PEOPLE!! Yes, this method is a great option for polishing rocks. I'm learning there are quite a few rockhounds who like rocks in their raw form, so tumbling to remove their character isn't appealing to them. ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
I think I like both. Tumbling is fun. Some rocks ya just don't want to lose so much. Tumbling one like your gorgeous mosaic(?) one would have destroyed it. Love those becciated jaspers too!
Agreed and very well-said!! I'm so happy to hear you also like the sprayed polish look. 😁 I wasn't sure how people would feel about it. Curious, have you tried spraying rocks to make them shine? I've had that mosaic agate for a while now and wasn't sure how to enhance its beauty. I have another that's even more spectacular. Now I know what to do with it! I agree rock tumbling is a lot of fun, and the challenge makes it worth the time and patience it requires. I'd love to know if you've tried spraying a polish on them!! ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
I love it 😊, I have always collected rocks ever since I was little, and would buy the little bags of polished rocks the would have at the different traveler station, thanks for sharing 🙏💗🎶👩🏻🦱, Sacramento Ca.
Howdy, Elizabeth! 👋🏼 Thank you! Yes, those polished rocks in gift stores are an absolute magnet for kids to become rockhounds! You're not too far north of me, my fellow Californian! ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
You have a great idea here! I mean,we do t get the sanded deeper colors this way,but im COOL WITH LOW SHEEN ROCKS....I LOVE THIS SO MUCH BECAUSE I LIKE ROUGH ROCKS BUT THEY COULD USE A LITTLE TLC LIKE THIS❤❤❤
Howdy, Liz! Exactly! This method is a great option, depending on the type of rock(s) or if a person doesn't have a rock tumbler for a variety of reasons. Thanks for watching and ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
You are so cute!! Such a great personality!! This is a great idea!! Thank you...I collect ricks all over Michigan ,especially lake Michigan...can't wait to try!
I am an insane rock collector myself. I love this idea and use it on some of my own too. Except... and I learned this the very hard way btw- only use it on your stones that won't be subject to serious weather/temperature changes. About 10 yrs ago at a time I didn't have a tumbler I spray glossed nearly a thousand rocks over the summer/fall and left quite a few outdoors as decoration like I usually do. Well after cold weather and freezing temps came the coats of gloss started cracking and chipping. It made a horrible mess. wouldn't have been so bad if I could have easily gotten the rest of the clear coat to rub or chip the rest of the way off but it didn't work that way. Still to this day I find some of those rocks that I sprayed and left outside here and there. They have to be ran thru the tumbler to get the rest of the spray off. It works great though for those that won't experience serious temp changes. Loved your video regardless.
Howdy, Rachel! Thank you for the info. on using it on rocks in extreme weather! Curious - Do you remember if the spray you used was for outdoor use? This Rust-Oleum is indoor-outdoor, but I'm not sure about extreme weather. Thank you for your kind words! ROCK ON!! 😁💦🪨
Howdy, Koreen!! 👋🏻 Thank you so much for your feedback. I totally agree this is a great way to preserve fragile rocks as well as ones that might lose too much character in the tumbling process. ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
@@CacklingChick I love the tumbling process. (I have 3 tumblers.). But there are some rocks I don't dare put through because they'd be ruined. Of course after I finished watching your video I ran out to find the rocks I would do this with...... 😬
EEEEE!!! That's so exciting to get those delicate rocks polished!! I'd love to hear how they turn out! Better yet, if interested, you can post pics of them on my subreddit. I think bc u do have the set up, do the first stage to smooth the rocks then spray I believe it would be more glasslike but love the idea & definitely doing this to a few of mine
Howdy! 👋🏼 You're so smart! I love this idea of smoothing in a rock tumbler, then spraying for a shine. Thank you, I’ll have to try that!! ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
Howdy, Tammy! 👋🏼 Great approach! I rarely touch he rocks after shining, whether tumbled or sprayed, so scratching isn't any issue for me. Also, the spray can says it's chip-resistant. Happy tumbling and spraying! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
Im going to try this! You used a lot of rock descriptive terminology that I would like to learn. Is there a website that teaches about rocks? I pick up rocks all the time but have no idea what different kinds are.
Howdy, Mary! 👋🏼 I'm so glad this video was helpful. I recommend doing a test on some rocks to see if you like the spray look before committing to a bunch of them. As for the terminology, I'm also learning as I go! I recommend www.mindat.org/ before buying any books. If you prefer books, I have some good geology ones filled with terminology here: www.amazon.com/shop/cacklingchick/list/19W83RVHMQZI5?ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_aipsflist_TVDJGCBFJ1ZZAQWMZVX5&language=en_US. @CacklingChick I think so! And I come from a long line of people who love rocks. I have rocks from all over the country that my mom brought home and I inherited. There are rocks in every room in my house!
@MouseMotes Wow, really? How cool is that to have your mom's rocks!! I'd love to see them if you care to share pics. If so, here's my subreddit community to post them: www.reddit.com/user/Cacklingchick/ ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
I'm so glad the Rust-Oleum did an amazing job on them! With the different porosity of each stone, there would be different levels of shine. So, some will need extra coats of the spray. My questions are: 1) What is the total cure time of the spray for this type of application? 2) Is the spray scratch-proof? In other words- can it be scratched with a fingernail? 3) Is there an odor (petroleum)? 4) If so, will it lose the 'fragrance' in a short time? 5) Will it become tacky in hot weather?
HOWDY, Dennis! You're absolutely correct poreous rocks will either not take a shine or require more coats. Great questions and here are the answers: 1) Dries to touch in 20 minutes 2) Chip-resistant 3) Low-odor 4) I don't smell it in my house, but I don't "sniff" my rocks! Try it on a couple rocks before committing to a larger batch as some people have sensitive noses! 5) It's formulated for indoor/outdoor use, so doubt it will get tacky, but I haven't subjected it to hot weather yet. It's also uv-resistant and non-yellowing. You can see the Rust-Oleum labels here: amzn.to/46A27BA I hope that helps and POLISH ON!! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
@@CacklingChick Denise here not Dennis. The reason I asked so many questions is that I was recommended Tree House Studio Clear Acrylic High Gloss Coating. "dries in minutes, creates a permanent, water-resistant finish". I followed the instructions, sprayed light sweeping strokes outside and waited longer than required. End result? Was tacky, smelled so badly of petroleum that I took the stones inside and soaked them (an hour) in a heavy dose of dishwashing solution and hot water. Scrubbed them and repeated the soak. They were sticky, smelled awful. I had to throw the four stones away. This is the Worst thing to put on the stone. $6.00 wasted. That's why I bombarded you with so many questions. I definitely didn't want a repeat disaster.
Howdy, DENISE! 👋🏼 OMG, I'm so sorry for my lazy reading!! 😳 I appreciate you sharing how that other spray worked out, or NOT! If you decide to use this Rust-Oleum spray, definitely do a test on rocks you don't care if they don't turn out the way you prefer. Definitely takes trial and error. I personally like the results, and the rocks are just sitting in a tray. GOOD LUCK, LADY! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
@@CacklingChick thank you for the kind words. Hindsight is a kick in the tush. I should have picked one or two to test. Forehead slap. I learned. (Grumbling under my breath.)
I agree. It's perfect for preserving rocks in their original shape, yet enhancing their colors with the much preferred "wet look"! Let me know if you try it and if you like it. Take care!
Howdy, Helen! 👋🏻 I'm so glad you enjoyed seeing this alternative polishing/shining method. I wasn't expecting the rocks to look that great, but I agree with you that this is great. Let me know how they turn out for you! ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
Howdy, Indy! 👋🏼 Thanks, I'm just being me! 😁 The can says it's chip resistant and for indoor and outdoor use, so I assume it will last longer than you think. I just have my rocks in a display tray on my coffee table, so minimal touching. I hope that helps!! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
I like to hold my rocks, and I do care for a lot of animals, so coating them with a chemical product wouldn't be so great for me personally. I wouldn't recommend people making jewelry with sprayed stones either, u could find yourself with some skin rashes or some other ill effect. My partner works with metal and wood, and for good quality, and durability... a lot of time goes into sanding and shaping the materials into something beautiful. A quick spray on layer may be great for decorations or school projects, but it's not the way to go if you truly want to cherish a stone and carry it with you through the journey of life. Wishing you much success with your channel. You make the most interesting sounds!
Howdy! 👋🏼 I agree with you if the stone is to be worn or touched often. Others have made similar comments. Another mentioned the spray may interfere with the vibrations from crystals. I hadn't thought of either of those things, but definitely valid points. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate the feedback. Yes, I'm naturally hyper, hence the spaz noises. Thanks again! Take care and ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
Howdy! 👋🏼 Thanks for the feedback and sub! You might be surprised to know my cackle is sometimes too loud for ME! I can't help it as it's my actual laugh. Most people love it, so take it or leave it, right? I try not to do it very often, though. ANYWAY, glad to meet you!! POLISH ON!! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
If you spray your rocks then later decide to tumble them, would there be any problems? I would think it would be fine but I am a complete beginner. Thank you for this video! Your rocks are beautiful and you have such a fun personality!
HOWDY, Laurie! So nice to meet you! Yes, I forgot to mention I see no issues with throwing these in the tumbler asfter spraying as it's only in water and grit, no open flame. I haven't tried it... yet!! Thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate you! ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️

I've lived on the West Coast beach for 50 years and I'm obsessed with all the pretty stones and rocks I have thousands in my garden but I really would like to display the translucent rocks in some sort of light box can anyone show me how that's done
Howdy Janice! 👋 Words can't express enough how envious I am that you've lived on beaches! Especially ones with ROCKS vs. only boring sand! Haha! I recommend looking on Pinterest, Etsy or even Amazon for a display light box for your rocks. I'm not sure what look you're going for other than light under the rocks. I hope that helps and ROCK ON!! 😁👍🪨⛏️
Howdy! 👋🏻 Wow, that's awesome to hear. Mine still look great, too! How long ago did you spray them? Did you use the same spray as I did or a different one? Thank you so much for sharing!
Looks like a good, easy method but I wonder if the stuff they would use to seal stone countertops and marble floors would last longer. It would surely cost more, but if you’re an avid collector, I’m sure you would get a lot of rocks covered from even the smallest batch. Applying it might get interesting, maybe for a thick cote you could make a wire spatula or something to dunk the rocks into the stuff and maybe use a cookie cooling rack to cure. A serious collector could get a piece of plywood and nail a bunch of long nails through like a mid-evil torture device and balance the rocks on the nail tips, just a crazy thought. Or maybe you could put the stuff in a spray bottle, it probably would last longer that way. Anyway, happy rock hunting!
Aside from tumbling, using a buttet polishing machine, and Rust-Oleum there is also water polishing where you line them in a trough and let water roughly polish them like a river, or an approch ive used is muriatic acid mixed with water to dilute. i caution this method but leaving stones overnight in the acid can eat the softer stone, remember a solution of water, baking soda and dish soap can dilute the acid to safer standards. Be wary and dont let it touch your skin. I use steel tongs and a steel cage to lift them in and out slowly. Wear protective gear this stuff is an acid and best used outdoors under supervision by someone who can call an ambulance. Have the dilute set up before the muriatic acid leaves the container. Gloves are ideal. DO NOT INHALE FUMES!!! Even on accident stay upwind! Ive been polishing, rock hounding, & collecting both stones, & minerals for 25 years. Another way is use food grade resin to coat the stones it provides a depth that draws the eye, but devalues the stone for jewelry, and resale however for personal stones like most crystals professional stone,& gem sellers dont want customers cut by a sharp edge or a poisonous element in the stone to touch skin often use clear gloss nail polish or glossy epoxy resin for protection.
HOWDY JOHN! 👋Wow, thank you so much for your wonderful info.! I'll admit that I'm intimidated by acid, so will most likely skip that technique. Maybe... I appreciate all the safety tips, though! I'm intrigued by the food-grade resin as I wasn't aware such a thing existed so added this to my list of things to try!! Thank you so much and ROCK ON!! 😁👍🪨⛏️
Thank you so much! I definitely need to read up on resin as I really know very little about it, except it's a coating/sealer. Thanks again for the awesome suggestion!! 😁👍🏻
Interesting, and thank you! I'm reading up on resin, and fumes are definitely an issue, and the long-term effects on humans haven't been fully studied yet. 🤔 I appreciate you mentioning this method! Learn something new almost every day!!
@CacklingChick 2 part epoxy can have an odor issue. The brand I use is very low odor and a surgical mask and nitrile glove is all I need. Deep pour resins (river tables/counter tops) do require a respirator. However, I primarily only use UV resin since I concentrate on jewelry pieces. Nitrile gloves for working and a well ventilated area for curing with a UV lamp. I have multiple lamps, so I can work on several pieces a day. I DO wear a painters mask for sanding and buffing. But, one would do that anyway.
I would have tried the mosaic rock In grit 2 and lots of plastic or foam... think it would stay together but then again it is a beauty of a rock to take the risk.
Howdy! Yes, I'd love to see it smoothed out, but it's not worth the risk. It's sitting in a metal tray with other rocks on my coffee table, safe and sound. 😂👍🏻
HOWDY! 👋 How FUN!! What tumbler does he have? I highly recommend and personally use these grits from The Rock Shed: amzn.to/3D7vK2r as most tumbler kits come with subpar grits. Make sure he doesn't cross-contaminate the grits in between stages, by cleaning the barrel and rocks well and using a scoop dedicated to each grit type. Also, do a 2-3 hour "tumble" of the rocks on water and a scoop of Borax after stage 3 (pre-polish) to remove all grit before the polishing stage. I recommend also doing the Borax tumble again after the polishing stage. It's also important to make sure to run each stage for as long as it's needed to get the results needed at each stage. I hope this helps, but let me know anytime if you have more questions! TUMBLE ON!! 😁👍💦🪨
Howdy! 👋🏻 Yes, I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least. I will definitely do this on rocks I can't tumble that are either too delicate or small or whatever Do you use this method often, then? ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️

@CacklingChick ❤️👍❤️
Have a wonderful day!! ❤️🪨❤️
Loved your comments.
Likewise! Thanks for sharing your part of the world! Absolutely LOVE it!!
TUMBLE ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨💦
I love my rock collection from all over the world and never thought about spraying them. Duh so easy.. Thanks for sharing
Howdy! 👋🏼 Wow, I'm envious of your collection!! Did you find them all or buy some of them?
You know you're a true rock hound when you lick your rocks 😂yes love it
Howdy, Baba! 👋🏼 Heck yeah!! 🪨😛
@@CacklingChick I have used top coat gel polish for some of my slabs. They came out amazing. Just a few light coats and then cure
@babajigga2006 Kewl beans! Do you mean gel nail polish?
@@CacklingChick yes gel nail polish
Ok, I added it to my list to try. Thanks so much!! 😁
I just started to use finger nail polish. It works real well too.
ROCK ON!! 😃👍🏻🪨⛏️
I found your comment adorable lol. I love that you named them littles and plan on keeping them forever.
I agree her comment and rock name is great!!
Thanks for the idea! I just ordered some unpolished river rocks for an art project. Can’t wait to enhance their beauty with the gloss spray.
Howdy, Stephanie! 👋🏼 You're very welcome! Where did you order your rocks from? Sounds like a fun project. ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
I think this is a great alternative for those more fragile rocks that won't survive the tumbler or take a shine. But I do love me a smooth, glassy stone.
HOWDY! 👋🏼 Spot on!! Thanks for your feedback, as I absolutely love to hear what you think. POLISH ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨💦
I am so glad I saw this. I, too, pick up rocks and marvel at their beauty. I can't wait to try. Thanks.
Howdy, Bobbie!👋 So nice to meet you, ROCKHOUND, and glad you found this video helpful. ROCK ON!! 😁👍🪨⛏️
HOWDY, Yelena! 👋🏼 Excellent point!! I hadn't thought about the handling of the rock, such as in jewelry. Thank you so much!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
Also, good to know it works great on shells!!
Trust me. It's magic. ❤
HOWDY!! 👋🏼 OMG, this is awesome! Is that the brand name? Does it work in extreme weather? Thank you!! SHINE ON!! 😃👍🏻💦🪨
Yes they have different kinds.. Glaze and seal which is a lacquer I think and the also a rain sealer that I think is water based.. Let me look
Google the wet look for garden..
I love the spray, but the tumbled are so gorgeous. Thank you for sharing this technique with us. You are awesome!!!!
HOWDY, Kristi! 👋🏼 I agree tumbled is superior, but I'm glad you also like the spray. It's great to have options depending on the type of rock or no patience, space or moola to get a tumbler! I appreciate your feedback more than you know. Thank YOU!! POLISH ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨💦

@CacklingChick I do the occasional driftwood sculpture and other carvings of wood. I'll bet you'd be a great artist 😉 Have you tried?
Oh, neat! No, I haven't tried yet. I have a few small pieces in the garage to make a driftwood and seaglass wind chime!

POLISH ON!! 😁👍🏻💨🪨

For those that are not smooth enough for spraying, a light coat of resin might work well. Even UV nail polish.
Howdy, Cindy! 👋🏼 I haven't tried resin. Yet. I'm a chicken when it comes to toxins, but I'm aware the spray is also toxic. There's UV nail polish?!? 🤔
Good idea for a quick polish. Born and raised on the central coast of California ❤
Howdy, Ginger! 👋🏼 You're very lucky to have grown up along California's Central Coast! I love that area as there are LESS PEOPLE!! Yes, this method is a great option for polishing rocks.
ROCK ON!! 😁💦🪨

Great questions and here are the answers:
1) Dries to touch in 20 minutes
2) Chip-resistant
3) Low-odor
4) I don't smell it in my house, but I don't "sniff" my rocks! Try it on a couple rocks before committing to a larger batch as some people have sensitive noses!
5) It's formulated for indoor/outdoor use, so doubt it will get tacky, but I haven't subjected it to hot weather yet. It's also uv-resistant and non-yellowing.
You can see the Rust-Oleum labels here: amzn.to/46A27BA
I hope that helps and POLISH ON!!
Howdy, Nigel! 👋🏼 So glad you found the video helpful and nice to meet you! Let me know if you try this Rust-Oleum spray! ROCK ON! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
You are so silly. And I love it. How does the spray polish hold up over time?
Howdy, Indy! 👋🏼 Thanks, I'm just being me! 😁 The can says it's chip resistant and for indoor and outdoor use, so I assume it will last longer than you think. I just have my rocks in a display tray on my coffee table, so minimal touching. I hope that helps!! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
LOVE this!! ♥
HOWDY! 👋🏼 Yay so glad you found it helpful! Let me know if you try it. Woot, woot! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
I prefer the spray it keeps the rocks natural formation 💯
YESSS!! I prefer rocks in their natural form, too! Keeps their character, just like people!! 😂 Thanks for stopping by, lady! SPRAY ON!!
I got up to the kamala cackle . Then turned off the sound . Captions are great though .
Suscribed . Thumbs up .
POLISH ON!! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
I am a prolific rock thief. Drives my parents nuts!
You have an awesome hobby. Never give up on your passions. Yes, rocks ROCK!!
Beeswax works good too
Howdy, Thomas! 👋🏼 Wow, interesting. I'd love to hear more! Just buy wax somewhere and rub it on the rocks? Thanks!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
@@CacklingChick thanks so much for your reply! Rock on!
You're very welcome and HAVE FUN!! 😃👍🏻
Good job. That beats sanding and polishing too. You made me laugh with your squealing and carrying on. 😅.
Howdy, Daniel! 👋🏼 Yes, it does!! It's great to have OPTIONS!! I'm naturally hyper and a spaz, my family can vouch for that! Glad you enjoyed the video and nice to meet you!! ROCK ON!!😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
Omg 😂😂twinn!!!!❤ where have u been ik your soul❤❤❤❤this is my sister from another mister!!!! 😂😊we speak same rock language 😂❤
HOWDY, MICHELLE!! 👋🏼😁 HA, you just made my day! Are you a SPAZ, too? And loves ROCKS?! SO nice to meet you, my fellow rockhound sister!! EEEEE!! ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
She has the right voice for Halloween voiceovers
Howdy, Mike! 👋🏼 Are you referring to my cackle laugh? 🤣
Thats a great idea, i might just try that! Also maybe some mineral or linseed oil. It lasts a while, I use it on my exterior woods…
HOWDY, Mark! 👋🏼 Yes, you should try it as it works very well. I have my rocks in a display tray on my coffee table, and they compliment my tumbled rocks perfectly! Great idea to try linseed oil. Thanks! POLISH ON!! 😁👍🏻💦🪨
@@CacklingChick yes, I just happen to have a can of gloss, plus a ton of nice rocks!
Sweet!! Let me know if you think it's a YAY or MEH! 😂👍🏻
@@CacklingChick I will thanks… !
🥳👍🏻
I use modge podge they come out great.
HOWDY! 👋🏼 That's so awesome to hear! It's on my list to try. Thank you for letting me know it works great. POLISH ON!! 😄👍🏻🪨💦
My clear coat rock collection from Michigan is still bright and clear. I keep them inside in a glass case.
Howdy! 👋🏻 Wow, that's awesome to hear. Mine still look great, too! How long ago did you spray them? Did you use the same spray as I did or a different one? Thank you so much for sharing!
@@CacklingChick I believe it was the same - it was over 6 years ago.
Oooh, sweeeet!! You made my day!! Great info. Thank you! Take care!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
I use a little olive oil sometimes to see more colors than than water can offer.
Great idea to use olive oil!! I think most oils would work for a temporary shine. Thanks for the idea!! ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
HOWDY, Don! 👋🏼 Not a bad idea in spray form for better coverage and less mess. Thank you!! 😁👍🏻⛏️💦
@CacklingChick no problem a small tip for 2 part epoxy resin 55 parts hardener/45 parts resin usually makes a great epoxy coat.
Thank you so much! I definitely need to read up on resin as I really know very little about it, except it's a coating/sealer. Thanks again for the awesome suggestion!! 😁👍🏻
Have you tried uv resin dip method? Mine come out gorgeous!
Howdy, Charli 👋🏼 I haven't heard of UV resin drip! Does it have toxic fumes?
@CacklingChick I have never noticed any. I frequently use it to shine up my buffed resin pieces and some of my rough stones before wire wrapping.
Wow, you sound like a pro! I'm nervous to try it!! Thanks for the info.! I'm contemplating using this. 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
Fabulous
Howdy, Ace! 👋🏼♠️ Thank you! Are you going to try it? 😁👍🏻💨🪨
@CacklingChick indeed I am.
Nice! Let me know if you like the results. 😆👍🏻
My grandson has a rock tumbler but the rocks still don’t have that high shine on them. Is there a secret to getting them to shine in tumbler??
HOWDY! TUMBLE ON!! 😁👍💦🪨
Do you spray Rust-Oleum when they are wet still or completely dry? 🤷♂️
Howdy! 👋🏼 Dry, as I mentioned in the video. I hope that helps and let me know if you try it. SPRAY ON!! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
It's work very well 👍
Howdy! 👋🏻 Yes, I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least. I will definitely do this on rocks I can't tumble that are either too delicate or small or whatever Do you use this method often, then? ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
Some sprays will turn yellow over time and will change the coloring of some of the rocks, especially the lighter colors. Choose a spray that says "non-yellowing" on the can.
Howdy! 👋🏼 Yes, some do, but this indoor/outdoor Rust-Oleum clear gloss doesn't yellow as noted on the pics of the can here: amzn.to/46A27BA
POLISH ON!! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
It depends on the rock, of course, which method is better.
Howdy! 👋🏼 Totally agree. It's especially ideal for those who want to keep the rock's essential character or who can't own a tumbler. Thanks for stopping by. SPRAY ON!! 😁👍🏻💨🪨
Can you laser engrave polished rocks?
HOWDY! 👋🏼 Yes, you can! Check out Rob's channel in which he did this. He's awesome! ROCK ON!! th-cam.com/video/s1tNGH6_HGs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0qdrSPBmQc-r-yW2
