I Put Marbles in a Rock Tumbler & Something Weird Happened! Then I Give Them to YOU!

- I have tumbled so many agates, jaspers, gemstones, rocks, and minerals, but one thing I have never tumbled is marbles! Curious to see if I could transform marbles into beach glass and then restore them to their original shiny state, I decided to give it a try. The results? Absolutely not what I expected!
First off, the tumbler barrel nearly burst! Turns out, marbles off-gas during tumbling, a surprise hazard I hadn't anticipated. Then, the marbles lost a significant amount of their weight, another unforeseen outcome that caught me off guard. But it's the final result that truly shocked me - something happened to the marbles that still amazes me every time I think about it.

Happy Hounding! - บันเทิง
Someone has to say it: "Ariel, I think you've lost your marbles." 😂
Hahaha you’re not wrong 😆
Possibly on the floor no less
you beat me to it, haha
THANK YOU SO MUCH! This is SOOOO the type of question I will not rest (or do ANYTHING else) until I find the answer! I was about to go into a Google inspired spiral trying to figure out what would make a tumbler become a "buldger" like a bad can of old beans!
lol
I have a feeling I'd just be tumbling random objects constantly if I had a tumbler😂
Haha that’s totally the plan 🤣
@AgateAriel It reminds me of when I started working in a restaurant, and pretty much tried deep frying *everything*. Co-workers would pass by, see me staring intently into the fryer, and just ask wtf I was deep frying now.
Deep fried spinach, dusted with garlic powder & salt, is amazing.
Deep fried chickpeas/garbanzos are addicting. I just like 'em with salt and they're awesome with a ton of different seasonings.
One experiment that my coworkers would ask me to make was rather surprising. One day I whacked up thin disks of really good Polish kielbasa & deep fried em. They cupped up, so OF COURSE I filled the little meat cups with sour cream & sprinkled with shredded cheddar cheese.
Surprisingly good and lol about once a week I'd end up making a platter.
True Story 💯 😂
got some really old pre wwII hinges, locks and screws caked in paint. Using the ceramic tumbling medium all the paint came off, and after a bit of polish they look brand new on my 100 yr old house. solid brass. only 5 days in the tumbler, I probably could have pulled them out by day 3. I now use a 2 barrel set to clean all kinds of hard to clean things.
@jenkor513 oooooh that beats the crockpot method!
Glass has tiny air bubbles that get trapped when it's being made, and as they wear down, those bubbles get released. As you mentioned, it's good practice to burp the tumbler every day or so when tumbling glass. It was neat to see what happens when you don't; you're braver than I am. 🤣 Those tiny shiny marbles are soooo stinking cute!
Haha I was slightly terrified 🫣 but at least nothing too crazy happened 🤣
glass doesn't contain enough air to pressurize a container like that. Certainly strange though - It looked similar to a jug I left outside with water in it, the water froze - expanding the jug like that. If it wasn't something like frozen water expansion (or temperature/air expansion) - I'd guess it's some kind of a chemical reaction of some sort causing the bulging. Glass doesn't offgas until it's at molten heat, and even then - it's extremely minimal. (Credentials: I'm a career glass worker)
@@TheGoldPanner Interesting. I always get pressure built-up when I tumble glass. Never enough to make the barrel bulge like hers, but always enough to make a little noise when it opens after 1-2 days, which I've never experienced from rocks (though I know that's possible also).
@@LivetolearnMama I am very curious as to what would be causing it - I'm gonna do some asking around in my glassy groups to see if we can come up with an answer, I'll also chat with some folks at the American Scientific Glass Society and see if there's any literature about that. I'm wondering if some sort of chemical reaction is happening during the tumbling. If I find any solid answers, I'll report back! =)
@@TheGoldPanner Awesome! Thanks!
We used to make "Fried Marbles" with the clear ones in the 70's. You heat the marbles up in a fry pan till hot and then dump them in ice water. It would "craze" them with internal cracks. Some would split completely but you would pick out the best ones to glue those rounded metal snow flake necklace attachments. That's a Mom technical term. Lol. Love your experiment and still love marbles. New subscriber and love your personality. Keep it up.
I am a lampwork glass bead maker and regularly tumble my work for the matt, frosted look. Normally only for a few hours at a time, not weeks on end! I have never tried to get them back to shiny though. That might be an interesting experiment for me too. Thank you so much for showing that it can be done.
Honestly, the prime reason I use my torch these days is to fire polish my fused glass if I've have to sand off a bur or even an edge. *
Though in a few cases, like if I have an enamel decal on it or used iridized glass (which does not take repeated reheating), I have used a slurry with jewelry polish after wet sanding with a 400 grit diamond pad. I can usually get a shine in about 10-15 minutes with elbow grease on a small spot. I honestly think she lost so much glass weight from running the tumbler on the larger grit sizes/earlier stages too long-- she might have been better off going for polishing sooner. I'd love to here what you discover if you do try to polish up some roughed up pieces (and are you using 104 COE or boro? since I have the feeling that would have bearing on it too!) But if you just want to do a single spot (like as a window to the inside if you did ribbons for instance) maybe just skip straight to polish...
*for those not used to hot glass, if you heat the glass just a little, the surface will flow, but not the interior, and you can usually smooth out surface pits from grinding, saw cutting, or sanding while still keeping the shape of the piece. Those surface pits are what diffuses light when it hits, causing the "frosting". Using heat to have the glass smooth itself is referred to as "fire polishing" and with small enough/thin enough pieces can even be done in a candle flame.
🤣Screaming at the screen, "Shine your blacklight on the whole seive of marbles to find the other glow in the dark ones!"🤣🤣🤣
The frosted ones would look really cool in a bowl with some led led lights hidden at the bottom. Maybe a mini string of red xmas lights. Nice job on the video, I had a rock tumbler as a kid and it's something I always wanted to get back into. Thanks for sharing!
Brings me all the way back to the Great Marble Wars, out on the playing fields in the grass of Ortega Elementary School, back in 1969.
early 70's for me
Late 70's for me... "Cleary boulder haystack up! Boulders only!"
You do know that you are just the ones who are around because your parents are just the ones left over from the original marble wars, right?
1966 for me at Gladiola Elementary in MI.
I was the champ at my school. A lot of players left crying.
As an avid collector of small round things, I absolutely love how these turned out. They're so shiny!
Haha right!! I was impressed they got that shiny!
I love marbles as much as rocks. I mix them in with my rock collection. I would never tumble marbles. They are just so beautiful. Just a tip, I use a small flat head screw driver to open my top lids. ❤ cool experiment, and fun video. 😊
Oh that’s a great idea! It was really a struggle opening the barrel 🤣
I use the washer that is between the barrel top and the screw on nut. Thin enough and works pretty well. Saves the fingertips and nails 😊
I saw some tumbling done about 30 yrs ago. Happened upon your channel today. Thought, what the heck and watched the whole thing. Very fascinated now. So onto more of your content. Thank you so much for sharing this.
WOW! I think I like the best when they look more like Sea glass. Just a little bit cloudy since you don't see that in the normal marble. I also love glowing in the dark anything!
I always wondered how marbles would do in a tumbler. I love marbles and have a collection that I keep in an old gum ball machine!
Oh that is so cool!!
What a novel idea. Love it!
Hey that is a cool idea! I have a few jars and have been wondering what to do with em.
make sure Keegan Michael Keye doesnt visit your house he might just..
*fills mouth with the marbles*
Some old marbles actually worth a fortune if you have the whole set....
That was pretty fun. The shine recovery was great and you didn't lose all your marbles, just half! Hahaha!! :)
This was a lot of fun to watch. I was very surprised how much mass was lost in the tumbling process.
And don’t tell my current cats, but one of my previous kitties who was named Doc is my favorite pet ever. He was a little furry menace who was more food motivated than a golden retriever. I taught him how to do some tricks. He slept with me almost every night of the almost 14 years I had him. I miss that little furry guy.
Oh my gosh that is so sweet! Pets are awesome 😊
I love marbles--they are tiny little works of art. I actually thought those with the spirals inside looked awesome with the beachglass finish!
That white galaxy marble looked amazing
Right!! I’m still not sure where it came from but it was really cool!
@@AgateAriel it looks like a fracture pattern inside the glass.
This is really pretty. My wife would love these on a chain or bracelet.
I think my favorite animal now is an otter. Recently I was invited on a hunt to the Okefenokee swamp. Being that I'm not able to hunt after a brain injury, I just sat beside a small lake while the rest went out hunting. They had a wild hog that has gotten tame , she would flop down beside my chair , and then get up and root around the lake. I watched the gators float around, but the otters would peek up at me , and then just play around all day. It was the best trip , I think I've ever had. When I wasn't petting Willow the hog , she would root at me for attention, and just watching the birds , and other wildlife. But those otters stole the show. This wasn't a zoo , or anything fenced in , it was just nature the God made it. I know this wasn't a comment about stones , but you asked about our favorite animal. God made so many beautiful things that we overlook. We spend lots a $$$$$$ on things to make us happy. Now that I can't go do all the busy things, and just sit out front, and watch the birds fly , sing , and the other animals doing their thing my mind is at peace. Plus the area dogs see me outside , and come hang out as well.
Ii truly miss the "ole days" when we did take time to observe things around us because we didn't have things (phones, etc.) grabbing our attention. We were in awe of so much, small things could make you gasp in wonder....for you may never have seen it before, except through a picture or encyclopedia. Ha! Even going back to school to hear where everybody went in the summer was cool. Glad you got the time to sit and watch the otters.
Glass artist here, the "flat marbles" are called gems or (amongst those not trying to sell them) globs. And if you paid more than about $3/lb, you over paid. The lightly tumbled/cloudy like that are also sold, for about $6-8/lb
Cutest lil choking hazard I've ever seen! 😍
WOW! That’s crazy how much the marbles lost in size and weight! Neat experiment! I love marbles! ❤
Right! I wasn’t sure what to expect so it was fun to test it out!
Well... now you know! What a fun project😊. Keep having fun and keep the mind spinning. Thanks for sharing your time and talent! 😷⚒
Thank you so much!
What an amazing difference tumbling the marbles made. This video was fun to watch and informative. :)
My Dog Corkie saw your video on the TV screen and pushed play on the remote!
Corkie is a rescue I've only had him since December 18th, and he loves marbles! Between his finding this video, and him finding marbles when we are on walks you got a new subscriber!
Always had an interest in rock tumbling, but never did get into it (no space for a tumbler) and tumbling marbles was something I have wanted to do since I was a kid!
(My cousin had a tumbler back then but only tumbled glass trying to make beach glass) you just made a 45 yr old dream come true! Thank you!
I had a cat that knew how to use a remote. He loved ChiPs and hated Star Trek.
His name was "The Frisco kid" (brother of "Vinny the Velcro")
I think the glass might be reacting with the ceramic media , leave that out or any alumina grit and see if it's still bulges.
From my childhood: the clear ones with the colorful swirl inside were called Aggies, the totally clear ones were called pureies, the larger ones that you didn’t get were called shooters. That’s all I can remember right now. What a fun video!
Fellow old citizen !!
Cats eyes.
Puries
Solids
Steelies.
Then large BOULDERS
Cats eyes boulders were just boulders.
Purie boulder
Solid boulder
Steelie boulder. ( most valuable )
@@markwarren3535 I was just coming to add that you could get old ball bearings from auto garages and they were called steelies. My grandpa owned a gas station/garage and we had a large tobbaco tin full of steelies. I wonder whatever happened to them? 🤔
"and a great big glassie with an American flag in the middle."
So clever!!! Love watching! Trying to convince my hubby I just NEED a tumbler! Favorite pet is now grandpets! Easy to love and then send home!
Oh yes definitely convince the husband! They are so much fun!! Haha love the grandpets! 😆
I learned a lot while watching. Hubby use to have a tumbler as a child but lost it in a house fire and it was never replaced, he talks about doing tumbling periodically but he only talks about the noise and making sure it didn't get to hot and catch fire. Looks like fun to me...slow fun, but fun none the less. :)
Very cool! I had never thought of putting marbles in my tumbler. I like the matte finish midway!
I would never have thought to do that experiment!!! That was so good. Great job. I absolutely love the new baby marbles. 😂❤
Thanks so much! 😊
I love the infectious joy that just seeps out of every video you do. Its like a little bit of agate-y sunshine 😊
Very nicely done! It has always had been a fascination of mine about stones and their looks was treated and cleaned!
I really enjoyed watching this process. Tough, stressful day at work, and this was soothing to watch. Mini marbles!
i hope you are aware that glass dust is VERY bad for you to inhale, or ingest, so all that sludge you've made, its is quite hazardous when dry! pls be careful where you dispose of it!
bet it would make a kickass pottery glaze too
A few comments. Glass marbles are tumbled in a big tumbler to clean them off before they are packaged. Next time try and split them and see the results, you will be suprised. Get one of those paint can openers from a paint or Home Depot place. They are perfect for pulling off the metal tops and are usually free. Lastly don't tumble them for such a long time unless you are going for making them smaller like you did.
I just got a rock tumbler and was wondering about tumbling glass. I love how much joy you are finding in yours. Inspiring!
I have had a fascination with marbles all my life. Flat ones, clear ones, antique ones...Thank you for a wonderful video. Will be looking forward to another!
Many years ago during the summer holidays, my sister and I were mooching up and down the lane outside our house when I saw what I thought was a piece of ice. I was so shocked when I picked it up and it burnt my fingers! It turned out to be a clear and white marble that had been chipped all over. We spent the rest of the summer putting marbles up and down the lane trying to make another one, but we never managed it! Sadly I lost 'Icey' many years ago, but maybe I could get a rock tumbler and try to make another one!
Wow that’s crazy!! Love it!
Love all the colors!! Very cool! I liked them too before you made them shiny. It looked like sea glass! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much! 😊
Very interesting they turned out really cool looking. You can see the center details more. Love the glow in the dark ones.
Would never have thought to tumble marbles. Fun and so interestimg to see the progression of tesults. Such cute baby marbles.
As far as favorite pets go, each and every one has been a favorite of mine. Have loved them all so much. ❤
This was a VERY enjoyable, outside the box video. I used to play with marbles as a kid and the purees (pure eez) were always the favored ones. It just so happens I've found a few of them and the next time I do some tumbling they are going in.
That is so awesome! Thank you so much!
That was one of the most unique “experiments “ I’ve ever watched on TH-cam! Thank you for having us join you on the adventure! I loved the clear one that looked like a solar system… really neat!
I think it was amazing results. Thank you for doing this experiment. ❤
Wow, interesting result from this marble experiment! Thanks for showing it on your channel.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
The pits on the glow-in-the-dark marbles were some of the phosphorescent flecks that fell out.
I love marbles. Got a bowl full with solar lights inside. At night it lights the room and casts all sorts of colours.
Wow, great idea!
Wow! I didn't think they would turn out so beautifully!
Loved this experiment! The tiniest ones are my favorite. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome experiments!! Those turned out great!! TUMBLE ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
Thank you so much! 😊
Glad I found your channel. I tumble rocks for jewelry and have tried marbles. Currently, I am teaching myself how to work with silver and semi-precious stones.
That is so cool! Definitely something I’d like to try in the future!
My older sister had a tumbler when I was growing up, and I loved it! Thank you for reminding me of that joy!
These look so much prettier afterwards! I've always wondered if there was a good way to make those flat pieces more smooth on the back side. Knowing this, will open up the opportunity for more projects where clarity is important. Thanks for doing this!
Cool, wow, they are definitely smaller. The galaxy one is super awesome! My favorite pet is Cosmo, my cockatoo he is a sweetheart ❤️ cuddly bird!
Aww that’s awesome!
That was so awesome 😎. BABY MARBLES!! Just know that I will cry for days if I don't win a baby marble😢,LOL. I hope you never stop doing what you do. I absolutely love all your videos.
Thank you so much! Cross your fingers! 🙌😊
This video made my day. I have loved marbles since the 1970s.
But seriously! I love how itty bitty and perfectly smooth they all are. 😍😍😍 I really enjoyed the video.
Kids, seriously don't let your mama mess with your marbles!! We all know that mama has lost all her marbles, and now she is after yours!
Bahaha 100% 🤣
Seems like grinding up spaghetti to make pasta.
The clear ones showing the bubbles after they have been tumbled is AMAZING! Love the experiments
That was amazing! The new marbles are almost as easy on the eyes as you are. Looking forward to more videos.
You should put brand new marbles straight into polish. That way you can see if you can shine them up even more.
Oh that’s a great idea!
How does one know when they are a true rockhound? If you take a bag of marbles on the hunt and every time you pick up a beautiful specimen, you take a marble out of the bag and place it where the specimen was resting. Once you have lost all of your marbles, then you know you are a true rockhound. In your case, you found a different way to lose your marbles. Now you are a true rockhoud!
Oh my gosh-I love that!! I might just have to do that!
That's a terrible idea. Nobody wants to see your marbles out in the wilderness leave no trace!
That was fun - thanks for putting in the effort! That was weeks of filming segments for these 20 minutes. Great work on the bench by the way, looks very nice, I like the stain color it came out. You're already in a basement, you don't want it too dark. Thanks for sharing the tumbling fun. And you're correct, the glow in the dark ones are awesome.
I love your little baby marbles! I love miniatures! They're SO cute! Fun experiment!!! 😀❤
Now that’s a cool experiment! I absolutely love the new minis! Thanks!
Haha right! It’s so hard to show how actually tiny they are now-I love it!
Your commitment to this experiment was AMAZING! I’ve had my rock tumbler for probably 3 years, and I’ve only tumbled one batch because I’m too impatient. 😂 The little clear marbles remind me of Orbies. Also, I love all “critters”, but my favorite is a good old fashioned mutt dog. ❤
Oh my gosh they do look like orbies! Haha thank you so much!
That turned out so cool! Thanks for sharing!
They are so cute. Much more shiny then when you started. ❤❤
Thank you for the marble test. When I was a young boy I wanted to buy a tumbler and do the same thing but had neither the money or the way to get one. So the answer is finally here. When I use to play with marbles we called the large ones, "Boulders", and the ones that were about half the diameter of the regular ones, "Peewees". Also, used the names of "Cat-Eyes" to describe the ones like the one you used for comparison and "Pureez" for the clear ones.
That was very educational! Thanks for sharing.
This is so chill to watch
Ya know what Ariel? I enjoy just listening to you. You passionately talk a lot about your interest. How you are engaged into your hobbies captivates to all ages. Amazing.❤
LOVE THE GLOW IN THE DARK MARBLES
These are amazing! I love them!
I definitely loved the frosted sea-glass marble look
Okay... That was pretty cool. Thank you for the video.
What a cool experiment! And gotta love the unexpected results of How small and How shiny they got.
That was so cool! I really like the marbles look and it's fascinating to see the detailed ones lost all their detail when tumbled. Still though the glow in the dark ones are my favorite.
Beautiful! They shine!
Stunning colors and the video was very interesting.
I've always wondered what would happen if I tumbled glass or even marbles.
Love, love, love, the clear invisible but visible spiral milky way looking marble.
I really luv your videos, you're very informative and explain things very well plus you don't ramble on and on about nothing.
These marbles are so cool! I played with the "basic" everywhere you can get them marbles as you described them. The ones with a swirl of green on the inside? That was one of my favorites and I always wanted to get closer to the swirl, and here we are almost 40 years later and your experiment gave me a chance to see what "closer to the swirl" looks like, and you gasped in the video I think about how good it looks. I agree! I did not think they'd get shiny again!
I LOVE those ones with the flat bottom. Ive akways wanted to do something grand like creating a whole wall with them. I look forward to your seaglass versions
That was pretty amazing. Great video. I shared it with my son so my grandkids could see it.😮 I have my first batch of rocks tumbling now and just bought another tumbler used. I have a Lortone and now a Thumler.
That is so awesome! I love my lortone!
@@AgateAriel I noticed my Lortone runs at 60 RPM, but the Thumler goes 40 RPM. I imagine the Thumler should be better for later stages and the Lortone better for stage 1.
That is a fantastic project. I love the end result
I was thinking of trying this... Thanks for saving me the trouble. Keep up the good work
What a fun experiment! I inherited my grandfather's tumbler, and have not had a chance to use it yet. This excites me to try it out! Thanks @Agate Ariel
I had a tumbler kit as a kid but didn't know you could get the polish and stuff outside of the kits. That knowledge would have make my childhood rock collection way more interesting.
Love tge effect of the traditional spiral one when the center takes up more volume.
This was fun to see!
Well that was a fun little journey! Thank you!
I really liked this (as a fan of rocks, tumblers, and marbles) but I also got super tense over seeing you open a pressurized container of unknown outgassing without any apparent ventilation/respiration safety haha, glad it wasn't toxic
😮❤❤❤ I like the polished ones because it kind of took off the excess clear and made the marble prettier. I think because the Center swirl shows better I don’t know I love it.
3 years ago I bought one of these tumblers and used it to clean rusty bolts on my motorcycle, since then it has been sitting on the shelf, this video makes me want to try doing these type of experiments. 😁
That is crazy! They got so small! I love them
Amazing, I've always wanted to try Marbles. Great job!
THis was great fun to watch.
you made me inspired to start tumbling! keep going :)
I love marbles. What a fun project! They are prettier now than when you first got them IMO. I have my daddy's and uncle's marbles from the 1930's! Well used and so fun to go through. Back then kids did play marbles with their friends all the time, so they are worn and precious to me. Still in the old Jiff peanut butter jars my Grannie had saved them in. Nice video and I look forward to watching more of your videos! I've always been a rock hound. I have rocks everywhere, from everywhere that I've been.
Be careful if you decide to tumble old marbles. Uranium glass was a thing with some of those from Akro Agate and others.
Oh I would never do anything with these precious antique marbles that belonged to my daddy and uncle. But that is good information to put out there for others that might @@paulskalla6845
I’m shocked that worked! 😮 Nicely done
You and me both!
I fell upon your video quite by mistake actually, but I absolutely loved it!! I've actually tumbled glass before but learned so much from watching you and your techniques. I am most definitely a new subscriber. I adore how the marble turned out. I didn't realize you could polish them too. I've always tried to make the sea glass effect.
