Nice review! I need me a big build volume. Edit: Also thank you for being honest about the faulty fan noise. Integrity is a thing missing from reviewers. Glad it held them to better standards.
Have just pre-ordered one after your review (thanks for the $100 off!), appreciate the honesty for this review, it's not like this is a low price tag product either. Much appreciated Vogman!
I'm very impressed with your review, and the machine. I think it might be my next purchase. As you said, this is still in the test/beta stage, I would like to see a few changes: Carrying handles, as you pointed out. Some kind of sturdy lift handle for the lid, as sticky fingers make a mess of the plastic. A metal vat instead of the plastic one, as I feel it would give more rigidity to the process and reduce drift. (PS Love the clips on the vat and plate, instead of those infernal screws.) And finally, an integrated camera. Since using the Saturn 4 Ultra, I can't do without it. Uniformation are obviously way ahead with an integral heater and resin feed, so finish it off. My point being, if you return to find a small 2 hour print has gone SNAFU, it's not a big deal, but this is a BIG printer, and I don't want to wait 12 hours only to find out it failed an hour into the print, not to mention the waste of expensive resin in the process. Bluetooth cameras are cheap now, and this thing has wireless and LAN as well, so I don't see it as a big change to add it. Oh, and bung some lights in, so we can see what we are looking at. 😄 The price point is not by any means cheap, but you can see what you are paying for, so I for one would be prepared to splash out a bit more with those improvements. Great to hear from you again, Geoff, keep up the good work.
Many thanks 😁 I'm genuinely hopeful that Uniformation will take my critique (and that by others no doubt) and use it to ensure a truly excellent product.
Amazing Video!!!which one do you think is better for jewellery this one or Elegoo Mars 5 ultra. I always love to hear your thoughts and review. Thank you
Great review, again, of the pros/cons. I really hope they listen. And if you see this Uniformation, VOG is one of the FEW "tech reviewers" who I trust for honesty. When I am looking to upgrade I see if they and a couple of others have a video on it first. I agree about the autofeed system. Without a way to agitate the bottle they will separate and that can affect the prints. Interesting to see the pitting tests play out, I would not expect the fan to be the cause. Maybe if it was replaced that could confirm it. And handles, put handles on the machine for easier movement. I have limited strength now, and would definitely need something reliable to grab instead of accidently pulling upward on the door.
Thanks for the kind words 😁 The pitting baffles me. If it had been consistent, I would have been happy, but an inconsistent problem is the most difficult to track down. The fan is nosier than it appears on the video and you can feel the vibration through the metal body, so maybe, just maybe, that's the issue. IF Uniformation are happy to provide a new fan, I'd be happy to resume my printing tests. But I'm guessing the fan belongs on or near the motherboard and overheating that is a road to disaster, so I've been taking risks all the time I've been pushing it for answers. As for strength, it's few of us that get stronger as we get older. The biggest problem with this printer is unpackaging. You cannot lift it from the box. You have to cut away the box and then unbolt the steel framing. Ideally this is a two person job.
While it might be something as simple as a wire that is being slapped by the fan (that's happened to me A Lot with both case fans and GPUs fresh out of the box from shipping/handling), it still requires hands-on adjustment to fix and getting into a brand-new printer inevitably means instant down time; I'm of the sort that I'll repair it myself vs the alternative of shipping it back and being without, with exception of waiting for replacement parts. Heck, most folks probably have a few spare case fans floating around that will fit at least until a factory-fresh is available. I certainly appreciate some details being filled in of my own curiosity, and I'm super happy to see the resin fill system isn't proprietary. 👍 Much agreed with the ACF. That'd be something I'd swap out for first use, which is kind of curious as their GK2 films were always nFEP/PFA even on the first run models (shortage I guess of the 'good stuff' at time of release?). I've bought mine by the roll for many years, but not everyone is in that group of 'power users' and a 3/6 pack might last them for the life of the printer.
I'm a "fix it myself" kind of guy too, but in cases like this I have to resist the urge. I like to show things as they really are so people have a realistic idea of want can happen 😁
Hey Vogman, thank you for putting together these videos and for your honesty. I have a question which I'm hoping you can help me with. I'm torn between the Phrozen Mega 8k V2 or the GK3Ultra. As you've had hands on with both, I wondered if you would share your thoughts. If I were to mainly print at 0.05 layer height, the quality between both printers would be the same right? Just the Mega 8K would allow for bigger prints? I'd appreciate any feedback or suggestions you have. I'd be printing mostly big statues.
My gk2 developed the same issue and I found a cable was rubbing on the blades, easy fix, also the the 2 times I contacted them, one sale related the other a vat issue. They went above and beyond to resolve the issues.
The GK3 is an impressive piece of equipment, but I don't need a resin printer this big. What I would actually like to see would be a miniature version of the GK2 (call it the "GK1") to produce small objects with the highest possible amount of detail (20um voxel size, or better) -- something like the Phrozen Sonic Mini 8K but with Uniformation design and build quality. I hope that when Uniformation decides to next expand their line of printers that this is the direction they take, since I think there is a market for this type of product, with few current competitors. At the right price, I'd certainly buy one!
I have no idea. I wrote to them last year and they said they'd love to send me a printer to review. They had all my details but never sent me anything. Maybe it's an oversight? Maybe they're scared of an honest review (some companies are)? I've written again so time will tell.
Very good review Geoff. Hopefully, Uniformation will fix the cover and fan fault with your printer soon. It would be interesting to see if a new fan fixes the pitting. Also, I hope Uniformation appreciate the honesty of your reviews and constructive criticism. These are the reasons why products need a warranty period. Plus, a company with a reputation for good customer service will stand out above the others.
I'm not sure my honest approach went down well with Uniformation Dan. There's been a few emails expressing their "disappointment" with me - but as I told them, I treat all makes and models the same. I can only guess that this disappointment in me will see me struck off future review lists, which is a shame as ultimately the end user suffers. "Yes-men" may sell more initially, but this approach leads to selling polished turds to angry and frustrated customers... and will these customers recommend the company or come back for future products? Honesty may appear to hurt, but ultimately it's the best medicine.
@@vogman maybe they just want to get the feedback from you firstly, rather than know the problems and feedback after your review video is published to the customers. i guess if there is some misunderstanding between you and Uniformation team.
Thanks Tony. I agree, and it does help. We all let things drip for a while, but it's surprising how much loose resin gets trapped. This simple but clever approach helps remedy this very well 😁
@@vogman Just a little tip you may already know. When you do drain your prints, do it with the heater on. It makes the resin like water and less mess for the ipa 👍. I still use my rechargeable hand warmers in my M5 when tilting my prints to drain. Works perfectly every time.
I did know this one buddy and I do it all the time, but thanks for sharing it with other viewers here. You're absolutely right, warm resin flows (and drips off) much better than cold resin - hence my love of heaters 😁😁😁
Thank you for the review! This was super helpful for me. I’m debating whether to get the GK2 or GK3 Ultra for my only resin printer. I get that they are basically the same, with a few exceptions, but I just can’t quite convince myself whether the bigger size is worth it or not over the GK2.
The advantage of this printer is that it will deal with anything very well, small prints or big prints... both with excellent detail. But ask yourself, do you really need 300mm prints? These will take a couple of days to print... And if you don't, do you really want to pay GK2 prices for an 8K printer? I loved the GK2, but when 14K screens came along, I had to abandon it. This may help you www.vegoilguy.co.uk/3d-resin-printing-which-printer.php
might be a great printer but for someone like me that just wants to print the occasional model to paint i cant justify the price when i can get an saturn ultra 4 or anycubic mono 7 for a third of the price. here in canada. p.s great review like always
Thanks Peter. Large range printers have big price tags, that's for sure. They also take up much more space and have more involved cleaning needs. Stick with what makes you happy buddy 😁😁😁👍👍👍
I've used this resin in a few review videos now as it gives great results and photographs well, so I'm happy there's no issues there. How the GK3 U would handle other resins I can't be certain, but I really can't imagine that it would make any real difference. Unfortunately with the fan being dodgy, using the printer further is risky as there's a potential to damage the screen, etc, so I had to stop my tests.
You mentioned that you hadn't come across a machine that mixes the resin - it's not really a solution, but Sunlu ABS Black (no idea if it works the same way with the other black resins) can go for weeks on end without needing to be mixed. Maybe they use ink instead of pigment to colour it, which would make sense. I've been using that pretty much exclusively and I love not having to mix my resin, it's been a real lifesaver.
so they're really not gonna send you any more products for review because of your observation about the fan? even though you basically gave this printer a glowing review?
Well thank you Mark for proving my point. Like you I felt this review, whilst balanced and honest, was ultimately positive 👍 I really don't know what the future will be between VogMan and Uniformation. Whilst I've spoken plainly about many brands and no doubt in some cases caused great embarrassment, I've never before received a complaint from a printer company! Uniformation have sent me a few emails expressing their disappointment with me, but it is important to note that the English isn't clear (language differences). I SUSPECT they would have been happier if I had ignored any problems I identified, and that worries me in case other TH-camrs have done exactly that. I can understand the temptation to do this. We'd all like sponsorship and promotion, but personally I can't do that if it means being dishonest. If I lie to you just so I can earn money, then to me I'd be a fraud and a thief. That's just not me. Unfortunately this approach isn't necessarily the best way to grow a Channel and gain views 😁😁😁
It's definitely my printer, too bad it doesn't come to South America, I'll have to wait for it to be sold on Amazon, for the moment I'm looking at the GK2, we'll see. I appreciate your posts, teaching and helping to make good decisions in a certain purchase. A big question that I didn't see in your video is, is it possible to access the menu and change printing parameters on the GK3. Does it have a print resume after power loss? Thanks
I depend on your honesty and candor, and I suspect that most of your subscribers do, as well. Hopefully, Uniformation takes that into account when working with you in the future. Could the pitting be related to bubbles in the resin? I had this issue when using heavily mixed Syraya Tech standard resin. Every time that the plate was submerged, more and more small bubbles would rise around the sides for a full 456 layer height 5 micron print.
Thanks for the kind words 😁 I don't think it's bubbles. The tray moves fairly slowly and I mix resin with care specifically to avoid bubble issues. But anything is possible.
Information aren't afraid to keep their prices at the high end. It works for them. They feel their quality deserves the price and their customers seem to agree.
I want to build some box like cases and have had troubles with my FDM printer, would a resin printer be suitable for consistent walls and right angles? I'm tempted to throw money at my problem, but only if it's gonna work
I've built a few boxes using resin printers, so yes, it's possible. You'd need to make sure things were thick enough to handle daily use as some resins are quite weak. Of course there are other resin that are very strong but cost a little extra. So could you do it? Yes, absolutely. Is it suitable for you? I don't know without knowing a lot more about your ideas. You could test the premiss quite cheaply by having a local print farm produce a resin-printed box for you. If it ticks all the boxes, you know you're on your way 😁
Absolutely. The original Mega 8K has a height of 400mm as opposed to the 300mm on the GK3 U, but in all other regards, the Uniformation is an outright winner 😁
I've noticed that the build plate sits far to the side when wanting the extra resin to flow back into the vat. Is the lid able to close when you have it hanging out in the drain slot?
@@vogman rn I have an Anycubic Photon Mono 2 and I just keep the cover on while the excess resin drops back into the vat below by leaving it mounted. Which I guess you could technically do the same on GK3 Ultra, but then that would make that feature(slot for the build plate) all but worthless.
The cartridge just inserts into a roughly square hole. It would be easy to fabricate something to fill this void and connect to an external venting system. Perhaps Uniformation supply one, I'm not sure.
Tough one, its big but no tipping screen. On the other hand, its heated from below. How much will the replacement screen be (when the time comes). That said, it's to expensive for me to justify the cost at the moment. Stil semirocking my Creality Halot Lite and Mono 2k - still working and still going strong. Still Creality when free Z axis movement?
I got to admit that when I print stuff on my Sonic 8k with .03mm layer thickness, I can't see a layer lines or "pixelation" whatsoever. Sure, I'll take the 16k when it has become industry standard, but I wouldn't pay extra for an upgrade that apparently my senses are too dull to even realize.
I always stipulate that my pictures are highly magnified because in the hand performance is all most of us want. 😁😁😁 Have you tried Image Blur on your Sonic 8K? That may help.
This printer will print tiny objects and vast objects up to 300mm tall very well, and with excellent detail. What you need to decide is whether or not you really need that...
1:55 I've heard the ol "its not a production unit" lie way too often to ever believe it. In my opinion, if they send it to reviewers and its not advertised as a beta product before being sent out, they get no benefit of the doubt, and the printer is what it is.
@@defdaz I mean, a product can get good reviews and still have glaring flaws. I think too many people have black and white opinions on things when a lot of bad products have good aspects and good products have bad aspects
In truth, when I received this unit I was made aware of the launch date, so I could see no reason why it would be a prototype. It was only after my first video that Uniformation told me this fact. I can only present to you the information I'm given. How reliable that information is, however, is for you to decide. 😁
You should certainly be cautious about rave reviews, especially those heavily promoted by the companies themselves (it's possible unofficial sponsorship may have taken place, like "You promote us, we'll promote you," or undeclared sponsorship). Of course it's also possible that the reviewer is just genuinely overwhelmed by the quality and ability of the unit being reviewed.😁
@@vogman only thing that worries me is the lack of empty cartridges for getting what ever resin you wish. I like the feeder system, i currently have the creality mage 8k pro with resin pump wich is amazing since it cleans the vat for me and pours resin.
let me guess its 'innovative!' I think this is just lazzy by information. The GK2 is a much larger market for price and size so considering its age and industry evolution they could have released a much better GK2
There's nothing really innovative on this printer. The GK2 was very innovative and way ahead of the majority of budget-end printers, but the GK3 Ultra is just more of the same on a bigger scale. I suppose the resin feed is different, but as I said in the video, these don't impress me personally. Interestingly I was expecting a GK3 (an improved GK2), and thanks to difficulties in language I wasted a lot of time on that. In the end it seems there was only ever a GK3 Ultra. Like you, I would have liked to have seem a GK2-Update... 😁
There's nothing very Elegoo about this printer. I love Elegoo, but they don't really seem all that bothered about this end of the market. Of course, that might have changed...
Not touching them considering the problems and the fact they got funny with you about mentioning the fan. You know why no one complains about them? Because the only people who own them are TH-camrs
Like I say, the fan and even cracked case damage could have happened to anyone, with any brand. I don't think I've ever received a printer that wasn't well packaged, but accidents and mishandling can happen... that's just logistics. They weren't nasty with me, but they expressed their disappointment in me through very lengthy emails. It was a strange and unusual experience. As regards ownership, I've heard from a lot of folks (not TH-camrs) and they've loved their Uniformation purchases. I also stand by my comments... broken fan and cracked case included, it's still the best printer in this range. It really is 😁
Nice review! I need me a big build volume.

Could the pitting be related to bubbles in the resin? I had this issue when using heavily mixed Syraya Tech standard resin. Every time that the plate was submerged, more and more small bubbles would rise around the sides for a full 456 layer height 5 micron print.
Thanks for the kind words 😁
I don't think it's bubbles. The tray moves fairly slowly and I mix resin with care specifically to avoid bubble issues. But anything is possible.
Thx for the review. Fine printer, but should be considering the high price.
If it ticks all the boxes, you know you're on your way 😁
@vogman cheers, I appreciate the help
Would you recommend this over the Phrozen Sonic Mega?
Absolutely. The original Mega 8K has a height of 400mm as opposed to the 300mm on the GK3 U, but in all other regards, the Uniformation is an outright winner 😁
If they get mad at ur honest review then that says soemthing about them
It was a strange response... maybe they're not used to reviewers telling the truth 😁😁😁
I've noticed that the build plate sits far to the side when wanting the extra resin to flow back into the vat. Is the lid able to close when you have it hanging out in the drain slot?
It that drainage position, the lid has to stay open... at least on the version I have.
@@vogman I just kind of figured that I would prefer to keep the lid down when there's an open vat of smelly resin.
I get you. It's a great feature... but yeah, smelly fumes will be an issue.
What would be nice, is a printer with a large flat print area......not necessarily a tall print area.
Interesting thought. 😁😁😁
i need to see the backside in more detail. will it be possible to mount a ventilation hose to the back to feed the fumes to the outside world?
The cartridge just inserts into a roughly square hole. It would be easy to fabricate something to fill this void and connect to an external venting system. Perhaps Uniformation supply one, I'm not sure.
Yay new VOGman!!!
😁😁😁
Tough one, its big but no tipping screen. On the other hand, its heated from below. How much will the replacement screen be (when the time comes). That said, it's to expensive for me to justify the cost at the moment. Stil semirocking my Creality Halot Lite and Mono 2k - still working and still going strong. Still Creality when free Z axis movement?
I always say if you're happy with what you've got, then stick with it.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for watching 😁😁😁👍👍👍
I got to admit that when I print stuff on my Sonic 8k with .03mm layer thickness, I can't see a layer lines or "pixelation" whatsoever.
Sure, I'll take the 16k when it has become industry standard, but I wouldn't pay extra for an upgrade that apparently my senses are too dull to even realize.
I always stipulate that my pictures are highly magnified because in the hand performance is all most of us want. 😁😁😁
Have you tried Image Blur on your Sonic 8K? That may help.
i assume it autolevels ?
No, there's no auto-levelling. It arrives pre-levelled. If it isn't level, there's a video going to be available (I've not see that).
GK3 vs HEYGEARS??
I can't compare what I haven't seen. I've written to Heygears four times now but for some reason they seem reluctant to let me review their printers.
3:12 jumpscare 💀
😁😁😁
buth the fumes?, you cant install a airfan
It would be easy to replace the cartridge filter with a duct export. You could even print such a thing using this printer 😁
🤔 Interesting, Might need to scrap the Idea of the Elegoo Mars Ultra! Ok back to the drawing board!
This is two sizes up from a Mars Ultra... Not really comparable.
This printer will print tiny objects and vast objects up to 300mm tall very well, and with excellent detail. What you need to decide is whether or not you really need that...
@@vogman Well that is a good point point but might come in handy by having one. I am still going for the Mars 4 ultra though 👍
1:55 I've heard the ol "its not a production unit" lie way too often to ever believe it.
In my opinion, if they send it to reviewers and its not advertised as a beta product before being sent out, they get no benefit of the doubt, and the printer is what it is.
Absolutely! You should definitely ignore all the rave reviews their printers get and how gk2 prototype issues were fixed for the official release.
I like your approach. I like to think that's what I do... good and bad... pros and cons.
Cool!
Many thanks 😁
hmm looks good?
I've called it the King of the Large Range, and I mean it.
@@vogman only thing that worries me is the lack of empty cartridges for getting what ever resin you wish. I like the feeder system, i currently have the creality mage 8k pro with resin pump wich is amazing since it cleans the vat for me and pours resin.
Niceee
let me guess its 'innovative!' I think this is just lazzy by information.
gk3... Can i copy your homework elegoo? Sure but dont make it too obvious!!!
makes the machine 1000X times better.
There's nothing very Elegoo about this printer. I love Elegoo, but they don't really seem all that bothered about this end of the market. Of course, that might have changed...
@@vogman Not really. I was just triggered immediately by the new hinge design. As elegoo used
Not touching them considering the problems and the fact they got funny with you about mentioning the fan.
It really is 😁
First
