We visited Egawa Dam again to collect some more of their free driftwood, which I want to use to line some of our flower beds. Nearby there's a charred bamboo craftsman store called Takenposu with a super friendly owner who showed us around his traditional Japanese... teahouse/garden/boat/???
Jun found a new tree he liked, and I attempted to make a lamp out of a bamboo craft, which turned out to be way more difficult than I expected.

Now that it's cooling down I can finally get back to work in our garden again, and I definitely need some higher borders for our flower beds than the rocks we found in our yard. The next step up for free flower bed edging is... free driftwood!!! I just love this dam, the worker is super nice, and I've been wanting to show her the fish tank we made with the last driftwood we picked up. I meant for this video to be about our yard but we got distracted by bamboo so that'll come later!

My parents really were right. They went Japan earlier this year and said that EVERYONE was extremely polite. I thought it was just because they were tourists, even if we as a family tend to not stick to touristy areas (Like they spend most of their time in Kyoto and Osaka, not Tokyo and want to eat only where locals eat.) but WOW, being polite is really a cultural thing. It's really nice! I mean, I like my stand-offish New York City folk too but it's nice to have someone come all the way to their store when it's not open and even let people look around and trust them not to take anything! That's nuts. I think there's very few businesses in the entire US that would do that. I hope to go one day, maybe take a friend from highschool along since she took Japanese and was super into manga and anime out of our little klick. I do try to learn a few words though: Please, Thank-You, Hello/Good Bye, and Sorry. It's the least I can do as a guest in a foreign country and thus a representative of America.
My mom worked for a travel journal so we got to travel for free a lot as kids. I have, indeed, sat poolside at the Ritz Carlton in a rainbow bathing suit at 6 and having the bartender just keep on filling up my Sprite. 🤭My mom remembers finding that and being like 'dear god I've created a monster'.

@@drtaru No. and I doubt you have too. But as someone who wastes a lot of time watching content creators in Japan besides Rachel and Jun, I know that the over-the-top expressions are typically just the culturally acceptable way to show you are interested and trying to appear respectful-not because the person is genuinely interested or genuinely respects you-it's an act, like most things in Japan's collectivist society. That doesn't mean that these reactions are bad or untrue-but it does make them feel* forced and fake as the individual was compelled to act like that by the standards of their society and not by their personality behind closed doors.

Basically you put in the inner diameters for the base and top of the light plus the height and it tells you the two circles you need to draw and where to cut the paper to get the shape you want.

I appreciate Jun's perspective on continually buying plants ( if you are able). It means you are helping bring nature back, every plant and tree means that wildlife will have more food and shelter. Its amazing how even one plant can make an impact.

What is it with japanese craftsmen being so generous with their time? I visited a store selling ceramics in Tokyo, and the store owner welcomed me back after the store closed to show me how to do a tea ceremony. Of course I went back, it was really nice of him.

As someone who makes (somewhat) of a living creating art/utilities, we just get quite passionate about it and take any chance we get to babble about it to (hopefully) interested parties :D ... mostly because our families stopped caring about a decade ago

You did a lovely job with that corner lamp. Nobody's going to spot any flaws in that!
The only alternative approach I could think of is this: There are self-adhesive strands of LED lights that you could wind around a dowel and set up in the middle. Some of them are just one colour (usually one kind of white or another), but there are also kits that have individually-addressable LEDs which can be programmed to change colours and all that. The downside to doing it that way is that you'd lose any upward splash-illumination on the ceiling you have from doing it how you've already set it up. As it is, your lamp is just fine and anyone would be proud to rock something like that in a quiet little nook.

I LOVE wisteria - the huge cascades of gorgeous blossoms (that show up before the leaves show themselves) and their lovely scent are a true joy. Its spring blossoms and summer foliage create a complete paradise. However, what everyone says about it taking over everything is true. It is truly a conquerer - it can and will take over everything in its path. So, you have to plan it away from your home. Best is to create something like a gazebo shape that you can sit several people underneath. Possibly training it also onto a strong frame to make a covered path leading up to it if you have enough space. It's capabilities are enormous - but so are its appetites for new areas to take over, so planning and awareness are your best bets. Please note that metal or possibly an extremely strong bamboo are materials to consider. Wisteria has muscles and flexes them. It needs you to stay aware and trim its tenacles - which will go everywhere. Having said all that - it's also one of the best, beautifully rewarding life-long companions - that you can treat yourself to.

You two are just so wholesome and I love seeing the slice of life adventures of a country and land I will likely never get to see myself. Especially since Japan has influenced so much of my life thanks to the usual games and anime I grew up with.
Thank you both for always putting out a video that will make me smile.

Rachael needs a show because her natural energy, humour, amiability and intelligence are a beacon in a sad world. Jun can also be her partner in crime with quick wit and his style of shy but sturdy natural wisdom. Truly it would be a fantastic simbiotic talent gifted to others, which is clearly fated. Like moths to flame, inborn exhuberance is with both of you! 🙋🇨🇦🥴✨✨✨🐈✨✨✨

Rachel, you are such a creative, hardworking, artistic and inspiring craftswoman! I‘m always in awe and speechless when you upload these projects what you are able to create and how skilled you are. And showing that you struggle sometimes and not everything turns out the way you planned, but you learn from mistakes and try again or accept that basically nothing can be perfect but will be funtional makes you not only more relateable but also makes me admire you even more. Of course Jun is just as amazing and skilled, you complement and support each other so well. And how stunning do the house and garden that you two are building already look, such a dream!
Your life seems like straight out of a beautiful wholesome anime, not one of those unrealistic fairytale types but with real life problems here and there. It brightens and touches so many people to see what you share. I know it‘s only a glimpse of your life so we don‘t know any of your true hardships and I don’t want to project unreachable idealisation that makes it sound like your life is all easy. I hope it makes sense.
Rachel mentioned that she struggles with her mental health quite a while ago. I‘m happy that I haven‘t seen undeserved negative comments towards you and that you feel safe enough to be in videos on a somewhat regular basis. You are a wonderful and beautiful (of course Jun, Poki, Pichi, Nagi and Haku are as well) and I‘m thankful we can be part of your journey and I truly all you the best ❤

One of my cats used to chomp on my other cats whiskers and break them off. Then more would fall out, the vet said from stress. Sometimes before the whiskers were bitten off they would be bent at weird angles. She looked kinda crazy till that chomper passed away but now she has long lovely whiskers. Other than the whisker thing they were the best of friends.
