Johnny Harris is a popular TH-camr known for producing engaging mini-documentaries on his channel. I've watched quite a few of them.
Recently, he released a viral documentary titled "Why The Swiss Love Their Guns (More Than Americans)." While I found his claim hard to believe, I decided to give it a chance.
However, after watching this video, which is admittedly well-done, this documentary is just a thinly veiled, passive-aggressive hit piece against the Second Amendment in America masked as a documentary.
So, now I have to debunk it.

Hey man, I'm a Swiss who is an SF operator in the Swiss Army. I totally agree with you on this debunking.
    - We have a huge amount of guns in the country but no crimes because we respect the responsibility that goes with it.
    - The problem in America isn't the guns, but rather the education of certain people and that is what the government should be focusing on.
    - In Switzerland we are not a militia to protect the country but the people (which is a difference imo).
    - The government in Switzerland is not entitled to any legislative decision without the people's agreement. So yes if the government was to become tyrannic we wouldn't protect this government, we would protect the Swiss people.
The problem is never the gun, it's always the person behind the gun.
Thank you for that interesting video !

If we wish to buy our service rifle there are things we need yo complete before hand. In the US, any firearm that fires more than one round with a single action of the trigger is classified by law as a "machine gun" under the national firearms act of 1934.
What you are likely trying to do is equate the "belt fed machine gun" with the legal definition of "machine gun." Unfortunately almost all laws that pertain to guns in the US are written by those that don't understand them.

I used to know Johnny Harris. When he was still a member of LDS church we served together in the same mission (Tijuana, Mexico). After the mission, we were friends on Facebook, and he posted a question about banning guns to help bring down violence. He wanted responses from both sides. I gave him mine, which was basically it wouldn't matter. I pointed to the fact of Mexico where we served still had violence, and the fact regular citizens are not allowed to have guns. Basically, my argument was evil people will always find a way to kill. After that day he unfriended me and blocked me. I was surprised and this happened i think in 2013. I dont have Facebook anymore. Every time I see his videos on TH-cam, I remember when I use to work together, he is a good person and I have nothing against him. But after he blocked me for giving me opinion basically told me he is not willing to listen to both sides. And will shut down opposing opinions out. Ever since then when people show me his videos I tell them my story and why I wouldn't trust his content because he doesn't look at all point of views.

It's similar to a lot of ex-mormon personality changes when people leave the LDS faith. People are so invested that when they leave they often become vindictive toward the church and think they know more about everything else now that they figured out the church isn't true.
I grew up LDS and left, and I think that mindset is stupid. The documentary he posted isn't overtly anti gun, but it has that same holier-than-thou flavor that I see daily here in Utah from people that think they know everything now that they've "opened their minds" past religion.
It's just more talking and virtue signaling dogwhistles so he can feel like a journalist and social pariah for the people he's pandering to, nothing will ever change unless people start doing things instead of making B.S. art pieces to try and make other people change instead.

    1. The guy with the gun leaning against the wall probaply only had it there for the video. Leaning your gun against a wall is illegal
    2. For the part at 17:11 (in my opinion unfortunatly) the answer is yes. The saing goes you have to be shot dead to be allowed to shoot back.
Best case the guy you shot was actually armed. And your just in for manslaughter.
Worst case you wear mistaken he wasnt armed. You can kiss your gun goodby(that was the last time you held a gun) and you get murder charges
Also as a sidenote: In some states they require a screaning to deside if you are worthy of a gun, where they will also ask you why you want a gun.
Since 2016 there is a trend if you say its for selfdefens, your likely not getting a gun

When something is used in a way that it was not designed for, you’re going to get the wrong results. Guns are dangerous weapons which are designed to KILL, or to cause serious injury, if you’re lucky enough. They aren’t designed for killing innocent people and school kids, and they aren’t designed for killing people in supermarkets, shopping malls and public places. But this is what happens in the US every single day.
The only people who should have access to guns are the military, special law enforcement and licenced individuals (eg. shooting clubs, farming/hunting). You can’t just have access to firearms for no valid reason. If people are given access to guns without a valid reason, the guns will be misused and people will get killed
In Switzerland, guns are being used for a valid reason - shooting competitions and hunting. That’s why they don’t have a gun violence problem. In the US, everyone has the right to own a gun, regardless of who they are, which is MADNESS!!! Like I said above, if something is used in a way that it was not designed for, you’re going to get the wrong results. That’s why thousands and thousands of people are killed by guns in the US every year, and it’s not meant to be that way
Lastly, let’s not forget that the US is the only country on earth where people literally have unfettered access to every kind of firearms you can imagine. To this day, many Americas still believe (crazily!) that owning a gun is the most effective way to protect themselves. Well, let’s look at this this for a moment. If arming everyone with a gun makes society a safer place, then America would be the safest country on earth. But it’s not. America isn’t even on the top ten list of safest countries. That tells you all you need to know.
What does every shooter have in common? They were all able to get a gun. So, access to guns leads to gun violence. The solution to gun violence? Ban them all. If nobody has a gun, then nobody can shoot. Problem solved.

It was a small public range with no range officer. About 10 people there. We left after couple hours. After we left she couldn't stop talking about how polite, careful and helpful everyone was. She was also surprised that no one was drinking. She had grown up in an urban anti gun culture and all she knew about gun ranges were the unfounded stereotypes of beer drinking careless red necks. She also was surprised at how much skill was required to shoot accurately. She didn't run right out and buy a gun but she was more accepting of my gun ownership.

Actually the Swiss DO have a standing army: how do you think they train and equip all of the 18 to 20 year old conscripts. Service is MANDATORY and some may CHOOSE to stay in.
Those who exit after the MANDATORY service period are AUTOMATICALLY enrolled in the reserve. They can be called up for any reason. Once the reserve period ends they may elect to keep their arms. These arms may then be de- militarized and are subject to government approval and regulation. (Rules).
Pretty much every Swiss citizen has arms and some legacy arms from their forefathers.
Our government should be required to issue every male at age 18 arms and the training to use them effectively and to NOT use them when not necessary.
Ammo should be issued for said weapons by the government for practice as needed as the Swiss do. They have a minimum to be kept in reserve at every home with a military member or reserve member in case they are called to duty.

In his documentary, you can see footage of people of all ages participating in shooting activities. However, the Swiss have a much more relaxed attitude towards guns. People can use tools to harm people, just as you can use a knife or even a shovel to kill people. If the only people who have access to guns are military and law enforcement then they can just mess around with you and you can't do anything just like in dystopian societies, how are you going to stop a man with a gun violating your rights if you don't have one? People misuse guns because they are uneducated or they are criminals who obtain them illegally anyways. Switzerland doesn't have a gun problem like us because for the most part they have a good economy and one of the highest living standards in Europe, so people don't have a reason to form gangs or deal drugs. And no we don't have access to every kind of firearm you can imagine. Automatic weapons are borderline impossible to buy in the United States unless you go through an extremely lengthy process in certain states to obtain a permit to buy one, and buying one will cost you well over $10,000-$15,000 since you can only buy one manufactured before 1986, making it impossible for most average people. We aren't on the top ten list of safest countries because of inner city violence and gang warfare. You can literally live in Chicago in peace but if you go to the wrong part of town you will live in risk of dying to gang violence (or as you call it for political reasons gun violence). Banning all guns has the same effect as banning drugs like marijuana has had. People still sold it people still had access to it. People still have access to other drugs like cocaine or meth, but they're banned. OH! And once again who deals marijuana and coke and meth?? Gangs, same groups responsible for gun violence.
Maybe if you took a trip to St. Louis or even New York where I've seen gang violence or any city where there is economic depravity and gang warfare you would realize what's the problem. This idea you keep spreading is because you never have taken a step into what the real world is. People in these places are fighting for their lives on the daily, and instead of trying to help people who are in poverty and struggling we squabble over what restrictions to put on law abiding citizens with guns. Great job we're doing in this country.

This is the reason why Switzerland has as many guns as the United States, and yet the levels of crime and firearm accidents are much lower.

  • @VIceBox
    @VIceBox 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +51

What people sometimes forget, our gun laws are pretty strict.
Yes you get handed a gun when you serve in the military, but if you want to keep that gun you need a gun ownership permit which includes a background check.
You also don't get a carry permit unless you're a:
    - Hunter/Gamekeeper
    - Policeman
You're only allowed to use a gun on your own property (safety considerations!) or at a shooting range.
You're also not allowed to store ammo and guns in the same place, eg. keeping a loaded pistol in your drawer = no go.
Guns and ammo need to be stored "behind 2 locked doors".
As for defending yourself, yes you theoretically can use a gun but unless the other guy is armed as well you're going to jail. Shooting an unarmed person even in self defense gets you jail time.
In the end, you can't really compare Switzerland to the US, when it comes to poverty and social security Switzerland is leaps and bounds ahead of the US.
The trust in the government is also a lot higher here.
The issue in the US is though that fixing the socio-economic issues would mean voting for the guys that might "fix" your gun laws so you're stuck between a rock and a hard place.

    • @jonyemm
      @jonyemm 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

You got that last part a bit incorrect there. The only way to "fix" our gun laws would be to repeal most of them so they don't infringe in the rights of law abiding citizens. Some of those who would actually do that are the same that would have no problem fixing many of the other issues. When the handouts stop they will get hungry and want shelter. They will either get a job, end up in prison (for the hopes of a free ride) where they should have a mandatory job to earn funds for their necessities, or get sh0t trying to steal.
Though, I do have a problem that some prisons/jails are privately owned for profit businesses.

@@nomadmarauder-dw9re I grew up and live in Zürich Switzerland and when I was in middleschool 44 out of 48 students in my class were either immigrants or children of immigrants, we only had 4 students with 2 swiss parents (including me) and all the students in our class combined could speak over 20 different languages, it was just a regular public school but al classes combined had students from Portugal, Italy, Germany, Albania, Bosnia, Serbia, Armenia, Croatia, Turkey, Sri-Lanka, India, Lebanon, Syria, Netherlands, Spain, dominican republic, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Nigeria, Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Kosovo, Macedonia, Russia, Romania, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kurdistan, Ghana etc etc so idk about the homogeneous part, in the countryside yes but most of the "bigger" cities (especially Geneva and Zürich) are melting pots of cultures and nationalities, for example yesterday I ate a Dürüm at the local Kebap joint and I heard at least 6 different languages being spoken at the tables around me in like 15-20 minutes.
Add to that the fact that Switzerland has 4 different national languages and over 20 different swiss german dialects within an area around the size of Maryland, I don't see Switzerland as all that homogeneous, if you mean that most Swiss citizens are of european descent you are right but is it really homogeneous when all those Europeans come from different countries with different cultures speaking different languages ?
For example I can drive to Italy in less than 3 hours and their mentality, language and culture is completely different from Swiss people even though we are neighbours we couldn't be any more different, japanese or american people are closer to Swiss people than Italians in terms of mentality and culture so just because we're both european countries with mostly european populations ethnically speaking (even though Italian ethnicity is only partly European) doesn't mean we're similar in the slightest and that goes for all of Europe. That's why it's weird when I hear Switzerland referred to as a homogeneous population because it's only somewhat homogeneous in terms of ethnicity but not at all in terms of language/culture, alot of americas seem to think that "mostly white population = homogeneous population" because that makes sense in the US where all the white people speak the same language and grow up with more or less the same culture but it doesn't make sense when those white people all speak different languages, have different mentalies and can't even relate to each other at all. If a russian, a Scott, a spaniard and a swiss person are in the same room would you say it's a homogeneous room just because they're all white europeans ? Even though they have nothing else in common with each other ?
And what do you mean by police state ? The police force here is pretty small and mostly unarmed, only like 0,3% of the national BIP goes to the military and I've never experienced a shortage of freedoms or police brutality of any kind, I didn't feel any more free during my time in Providence, Rhode Island.
It's also not that hard to get into Switzerland, for example my brother works as a teacher at a refugee camp and there's like 8 year old children who fled their home country (sometimes on a different continent) alone or with their siblings without their parents knowledge and even they get in, or at least most of them. Literal pre-schoolers get in without even speaking a word english, french or german. I do think Switzerland is somewhat strict with poor refugees from outside Europe but compared to alot of other European countries it's pretty open.

The part on swiss history looks like he romanticised an already romanticised version of swiss history he found somewhere online. In fact, notice the lack of sources everywhere ? The only “sources” are the randoms he interviews. It’s like all the budget went on the plane tickets and fun animations, none left for research.

As a member of the Swiss Army and owner of a firearm myself, I think Jonny is right in many aspects. Although I agree, that he leaves out the important part of how many Americans, as you seem to be for example, use their guns responsibly. The issue is, that we, in comparison to America, have basically no accidents or assault with firearms. What Jonny tried to find out is, in my opinion, why that's the case and his conclusion, even though it is not discussing every aspect of it, seems quite logical.
I can see why you'd say that it is purely political in motive on first glance, especially from your point of view, but I believe he is genuinely searching for a solution in the US. I'm pretty sure he even states that directly in the video. He (Jonny Harris) has seen, that no one fears firearms in switzerland and no one wants to ban them.
He also states, that the swiss system couldn't work in the US because of the historical context guns developed in. For me it comes across that he started to like firearms in Switzerland and pitties the fact, that some dumbasses ruin it for all of the gun owners in America.
So he is for firearms, just not the way they are oftentimes portraied, maybe even glorified and used as a tool for fun games in an unresponsible manner.
Calling his rather neutral documentary a "passive agressive hitpiece against the second amendment" is wild..

They understood most people throughout history have lived under some form of authoritarianism, or tyranny, i.e., a threat of force. The Framers also understood human nature enough to know there would always be those who'd seek to impose their will on others - by force if necessary. Any government that seeks to disarm its responsible law-abiding citizens is a government to beware.

This needs to be deconstructed further.
The reason given for gun control is to prevent gun violence.
Switzerland shows us that availability of firearms, even mass casualty producing ones, does not cause violence.
Therefore it's a social one, what makes Switzerland less violent.
The "magical" word is just that.

A small correction: The shooting competition wasn‘t long range, or at least isn‘t considered long range in Switzerland. It is on a distance of 300 meters, which is the basic rifle qualification range for Swiss soldiers. Every service member has to qualify annually on 300m (or 25m for higher NCOs and officers, since their personal weapon is a pistol).
Just some nice to know things about those competitions/ qualifications: Each 300m range (partially funded by the defense department) will host several competitions over the summer where you can just walk into the building, grab the necessary ammo and shoot your qualification. If you fail to do your qualifications you will be fined (iirc first time will be about 200$, second time 400$ and then it will gradually rise).
So a lot of people are going to the range because they are legally obligated to do so.

His documentary style, narrative crafting, editing, and emotional music illicit an emotional response in people. He can use this to obscure facts which seem to be less important to people now days with said emotion.
There is a type of viewer of his that would rather feel right than know they are wrong. A video with hard hitting bland facts probably won’t reach them, but if you can get them to feel a certain way about our argument then we might win them over.

I love how Johnny there is so horrified at the idea of Americans "buying more guns", but he completely fails to show the correlation between the number of guns and the number of people. A lot of people came to America in the 20th Century from regimes where they couldn't own guns, precisely *because* they couldn't own guns. That doesn't even get into the effects of drafting millions of young men into war in WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, and training them in the use of firearms, then returning them to the civilian population, nor does it account for the Cold War. Let's also take a moment to reflect on the fact that Switzerland has about the land area smaller than Vermont and New Hampshire combined, and a population similar to that of New York City. I am so sick and tired of these misinformed people comparing the third largest and most diverse nation in the world to tiny European principalities a minuscule fraction of our size, with mostly homogenous (and white) populations.

      Not the same at all...
      1. Risking your life for what insurance can pay back is ridiculous.
      2. Your houses are made of cardboard. Shooting at the intruder sounds fun, but not for the neighbour getting hit. Self defence with a weapon when a life is threatened is understandable. Problem, very often the gun can cause the unsafe situation. Or the shooting is absolutely not justified...
      3. Americans tend to believe that they are all Rambo, able to do whatever with a weapon because they saw it online. Even cops trained for school shooting cases didn't dare to enter Uvalde's school because of the AR-15.
Unless one is trained, a weapon is a very dangerous tool.
      4. Switzerland sees guns as a defense against external threats. Self defence isn't the role for guns. That's the job of the police. Why is there less violence? Because there is less poverty in most of developed countries than in the US: And the countries that are getting poverty issues start to have violence.
If the US wants to be a safer place, there are major mentality shifts to have. No guns are not THE solution against violence.

@@fabr5747 1. everyone who cites insurance is just signaling they aren't a real adult or have never experienced any hardship at all. You know insurance doesn't make you whole, right? My girlfriend was hit by a motorist using commercial insurance, that company denied the claim because the vehicle was private use, my gf has uninsured motorist coverage...still cost her a grand. And that was for a minor accident. A grand for a minor incident, it scales out of control quickly.
      2. You're an absolute moron if you think a gun is escalating someone being in your home. Thieves aren't idiots, they will enter when you're not around. Anyone entering your home while you're in it intends violence or a sexual attack.
