By an amazing coincidence, actor Robert Picardo played the gym teacher on "Wonder Years," AND a surgeon on "China Beach." He couldn't lose no matter what the network decided.
The good thing is for both shows, it all worked out; The Wonder Years had a long run, syndication, and an acclaimed DVD release, and now has a reboot series dealing with a new era and focus, while China Beach did do well as a four-season cult classic that avoided the curse of a lengthy Super Bowl and long pilot better aired as an event night on its own cutting it short in its prime, and its own acclaimed DVD set. The real winner though; the local news departments, which instead of having to keep their anchors stuck waiting until after midnight or 12:30am to start (and having wasted a long lead-in), were out the door by their usual Sunday night time because a half-hour show certainly kept most of the lead-in, especially going into the Calgary Olympics and that promotional steamroller (which would end up being ABC's last run at the Games).
The reboot Wonder Years is the same era (late 1960s). Different Focus, Different Location, Same premise. 12-year-old black boy in Mongomery, Alabama instead of 12-year-old white boy in suburban New York.
The Wonder Years pilot re-aired on March 15th, 1988, after ridiculously heavy promotion during the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. That said, the decision by ABC to not air a two-hour China Beach pilot after the Super Bowl was likely a very smart one. In 1999, the fourth episode of the Sopranos was held up by HBO until the end of the Super Bowl.
I remember this so well. Wow, did you nail this one perfectly. I truly enjoyed this video so much. I remember it well, as well as watching the Wonder Years after the Super Bowl. This was an exceptional video--Great job with reporting, the nostalgia, and laying out the context.
@taytay8283 Yeah, Fred Savage has stepped behind the camera, after, his acting career began to tail off, and, from what I've heard, he's, quite, good, that's, great.
This show ran for a few seasons on ABC and in syndication throughout the 1990’s in reruns. “The Wonder Years” made Fred Savage a household name. He also did a movie called “The Wizard” where the kids went to a video game expo for a competition, and it has a sneak peek of “Super Mario Bros. 3” which was in the movie. I love the movie and it was a fun, and a newcomer to retro gaming if you are a Nintendo fan.
This was one of my favorite videos of yours you masterfully strung me along haha..the whole time in my head I was like I won't know the show he's talking about then I was like the wonder years?!
I was in 3rd grade. The Denver Broncos were my favorite team and it’s right around the time I developed a heavy interest in the 60s and the Vietnam era. I pleaded with my parents to let me stay up and watch the premiere of The Wonder Years! I loved it and I always tell people that it aired on 1/31/88. Many people didn’t realize that haha.

Watched SBXXII over here in England. I remember ABC heavily trailing The Wonder Years throughout but, of course we didn't get to see it for a few years - great show. I got to bed about 4am - the first three quarters took over 3hrs but fortunately with the game out of reach the final quarter went quickly. By comparison, a year later with the classic Montana-to-Taylor ending, I was in bed closer to 2:30am. These days with the later kickoffs it's around 3:15am
@@TimmyTickle Ha ha - think it was straight to the closedown logo. May have occasionally aired something like Spectacular Sporting Bloopers and Football Funnies.
Remembering now I recall the timings because I was watching at a friend's house and had left the VCR recording at home. With the game running long, I was nervous the tape was going to run out as I had a recording of the Championship games programme on it first.
Thank you for this. I was a big of the Wonder Years, I had completely forgot that the showed premiered after the Redskins laid a beatdown on the Broncos in Super Bowl 22.
Thirty-seven years later, I can still remember how ABC promoted the hell out of MacGruder and Loud. Every time I see John Getz doing a guest appearance on Criminal MInds or some other show, my first response is, "Hey, it's the MacGruder and Loud guy!"
Meanwhile, Kathryn Harrold, never, really found top breakout roles, despite, hanging around, for, years, Raw Deal, was, supposed to be the beginning, but, I guess, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Darren McGavin, Sam Wanamaker, Paul Shenar, Joe Regalbuto, Robert Davi, Steven Hill, and, Ed Lauter, form the kind of supporting cast that few actresses can, truly, overcome, that's showbiz.
It seems like competitor networks have a prime opportunity to air programming that people uninterested in the superbowl would find appealing. Especially during the halftime show and the postgame ceremony. There’re other target demographics who aren’t interested in the game plus if the game itself is terrible or boring or becomes one-sided, superbowl viewers might wanna check out what else is on. Plus in recent years the halftime show has become rather risqué in many people’s minds, so they might want to flip over to something more wholesome for a half hour. The postgame award ceremony is such a bore for anyone who isn’t a fan of the winner that I’d contend that the time slot immediately after the game on other networks is more valuable than the superbowl network’s time slot after the trophy broadcast; most have already tuned out.
@@jefffinkbonner9551 That is sadly not a thing anymore with all four networks now involved with the NFL in some form or another. The only counterprogramming around is the Puppy Bowl, mostly because Animal Planet and Discovery have no involvement with the league.
The Super Bowl thing didn't work for Family Guy. The show barely made it through 2.5 seasons before being cancelled. The episodes were distributed free (and legally) on the internet in the pre-TH-cam days. College kids with good connections saw the show and word of mouth spread. After successful DVD releases, the show was brought back.
@@matthewdaley746 Homicide lasted longer (before Family Guy's original cancellation, I mean) and I think it was a great show, but I have no clue how it lasted as long as it did. During one season it was the lowest rated show not cancelled by NBC.
@@kyleolson8977 It's what's, now, known as, An, Acclaimed Flop, (the opposite of, A, Sleeper), Cheers, was, also, rated towards the bottom, after, Season One, as well, but, it would get, another, chance, though, I, (and, Ted Danson), thought it had run its course, after, Season Seven, despite, the, terrific final episode.
@@matthewdaley746 TV Networks won't really keep a series on because of awards or press, despite what people think, nor do they cancel shows because the story has reached a logical end point. It's all about cash, and acclaim translates poorly into cash unless there are ratings. There are other examples of critical darlings that don't do as well. Murder One, for example, had better ratings in the first season than Homicide did in its first season (relative to all of TV). What saved Homicide despite being marginal for so long ratings-wise was likely that it wasn't dropping but got a little stronger. Murder One fell off after season one so it's natural it got the axe. What amazes me isn't that Homicide was renewed for a while after it was stable. What amazes me is that it survived that first season. As for the end of the show, even with completely stable ratings a show is likely to be cancelled eventually. The cost of the cast, crew, and producers start increasing and you can only drop so many of them. Eventually the show becomes too expensive. This is the main reason why you see major actors leave shows without warning between seasons. Some shows like Law and Order can cycle out nearly the entire cast and last 20 years, and Homicide did that some.
@@kyleolson8977 Cheers and Hill Street Blues both had low ratings when they debuted in the early 1980s, back when NBC’s entertainment was in dead last place. Both shows were saved by winning Emmy awards after their first years.
Ah, The Wonder Years, one of the best shows of my lifetime. After watching Doug Williams break down amazing barriers as a young Black kid, I got to watch the pilot of a show I immediately fell in love with. Great evening for young me.
Agreed Manu. Even though this was a butt kicking by the team formerly known as the “ Washington Redskins” over the Elway led Broncos, this 1988 Big game was historic in 3 other ways as well. Not only this SB was a land mark and ground breaking event with the show by Doug Williams performance. Matter of fact, Williams then record breaking “game of his life” was huge in helping to end the semi racial barrier of Black Quarterbacks winning a championship. Plus the 2nd historical memory from this big game with not only the debut of the classic show “The Wonder Years.” It was also the debut of former lead Olympic Hockey & MLB Commentator Al Michaels first time calling the Super Bowl as well.
I believe "Arrested Development" aired after the Super Bowl. And I never would have watched it, otherwise because the ads were so *terrible* . I'm _SO_ glad I did, though.
It had Juliette Lewis, even that, Godawful, wig, and/or, dye job, couldn't ruin her, for, that, it'll always hold a, truly, special place, in my heart.
Awesome. I was in middle school the night my Broncos lost that Super Bowl, and all people talked about the next day (teachers included) was the new show about Kevin Arnold.
"I consider the ending to the pilot of the wonder years to be anything but a comedy series." (Scans memory to remember what was the ending of the wonder years pilot). Oh yeah, damn.
I loved The Wonder Years, I was a huge fan of Fred Savage and his great "awkward comic" timing. Easily one of the greatest child actors of all time and The Wonder Years really shows how good he was.
I remember Airwolf. One of the very few shows I actually watched (other than news and sports) back then. (The other shows I liked were Spenser: For Hire, Knight Rider, and Magnum, P.I.)
My Dad enjoyed, Spenser, For, Hire, (for, the scenery, his, Hometown), and, Magnum, P.I., because, he, was, one of the very select people to whom Hawaii, was, not, "mysterious," (Navy).
“Airwolf” lasted for three seasons on CBS when it moved to first-run syndication in 1987 where it remained for another season or two. I remember “Airwolf” since I was a kid.
I have never been here this early before to a JG9 video. I guess I am interested in random NFL/AFL stuff that, most of the time, hasn't been relevant in many years.
(Please note: I paused this at the 2:55 mark...) I remember Super Bowl XIX quite well... here in Buffalo and environs, we had a real bad blizzard that day, and the snowfall/subsequent snowdrifts made travel nearly impossible for a good part of the upcoming work week. Not only that, but schools were closed for that week because of the conditions described. As an aside: the next day, January 21 of 1985, was my state(New York)'s first observance of MLK Day; it wouldn't be a federal thing until 1986. Plus, IIRC, that upcoming weekend would've been my junior-high chorus' performance of *THE WIZARD OF OZ.* It turned out we'd have to wait a few more weeks to get that in. Finally, Super Bowl night's outro show was the short-lived *MacGRUDER AND LOUD* crime series; it turns out the police captain was played by the same fella who played the Cowardly Lion in *THE WIZ.* However, this series didn't last too long. But: the next ABC foray with the Super Bowl was Super Bowl XXII; the series that started after that game, *THE WONDER YEARS,* would prove to be a mega-hit.

Reminds me of how NBC aired the "Stress Relief" episode of The Office right after Super Bowl XLIII, so right after the big game, viewers were treated to one of the funniest scenes in the entire show. "STANLEY! BARACK IS PRESIDENT, YOU ARE BLACK!"
I didn't like that episode of "The Office" after the Super Bowl and thought the cold open was over the top to pander to the Super Bowl crowd. Watching it on it's on multiple times years later on Netflix, I appreciate the episode on it's own. #SaveBandit
And in addition to all the other factors (longer halftime, post-game); this was also the second season of the original version of instant replay, with no time limits on reviews. That would have been a real disaster had ABC stuck with the 2-hour "China Beach" pilot.
It, was, the, first, new show to premiere, after, the, SB, but, with, the, exception, of, it, The, Wonder Years, Homicide, and, Family Guy, none, even, lasted, a year, to the point, where, new episodes, of, existing shows, took their place.
First a personal recollection from that night. I was trying to watch the Super Bowl that night but became ill at half time (I think it may have been food poisoning) so I missed the the second half (I left the TV on so I could listen to it). I didn't miss much action since there was only one touchdown scored in the second half. I had to see the Wonder Years pilot when it reaired. There have been several instances since that the lead out of the Super Bowl started late. One such was Alias was scheduled by ABC after the 2001 Super Bowl. It didn't start until just after 11:00 p.m Eastern. It was one of the lowest rated lead outs in quite some time. There was a year on FOX that American Dad premiered after 11:15 p.m. The reboot of 24 on FOX also started around 11:00. The lead outs just don't seem to get the attention of the viewing audience anymore. Although a show like This Is Us did OK, the last blockbuster post Super Bowl was Undercover Boss on CBS.

What if ABC held Cop Rock until the Super Bowl instead of rolling it out in September 1990? Sad thing was it didn't even *make* it to SB 25. Its last episode aired on December 26 Huge misfire for Steven Bochco before getting back to business with NYPD Blue. Maybe he didn't want the comps to L&O (which also debuted) off the bat--the whole DS9/Babylon 5 argument, which is understandable
This year (2022), with NBC-TV holding the rights to the Winter Olympics, and with the Olympics occurring at the same day as Super Bowl LVI, the network will air Olympics coverage after the Super Bowl instead of the premiere of a new entertainment series. Likely, based on the schedule of Olympic events, the long program in ice dancing and one of the women's hockey semifinals (if the U.S. is playing in the game to be played late that evening) would be the two events NBC will show.
That was a great night for me because I grew up a redskins fan and we dominated that super bowl. Then the wonder years airs and I was absolutely hooked from the 1st episode.
To be like George Giuliani, this was a well-done video. Great job per uzh! CBS aired Tour of Duty around that same time. It was another Vietnam War based show that aired before China Beach. Yet China Beach still did better overall. This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about a disastrous Apple commercial that aired during Super Bowl 19.
The subsequent two ABC Super Bowl lead-out shows (those being _Davis Rules_ after Super Bowl XXV and _Extreme_ after Super Bowl XXIX) fared poorly when compared to _The Wonder Years._ _Davis Rules_ was dropped by ABC before its first season wrapped-- and despite a channel hop to CBS [after ABC went back on its earlier word to use _Davis Rules_ as a midseason replacement in 1992] and a retool by CBS, the show ended after 29 episodes. _Extreme_ only lasted *seven* episodes, despite having James Brolin in the lead role. Ever since 1996, when NBC aired an hour-long and star-studded _Friends_ episode, the consensus has been to have an established series air after the game-- with little exception.
Only Exception was for Fox with Family Guy and that went well until one episode And Then There Were Fewer, after that the show dropped off with only a few exceptions of the mainly if not all Brian and Stewie time, travel, or other science episodes and one locked in the vault, or the origin of the Joke episode. After the writers stopped the mainly Brian and Stewie episodes the show became mostly a joke, even inside the show sometimes making fun of how bad and dumb the show has become, and how poor the writing is so I tuned it out.

The Wonder Years was an excellent show to follow the superbowl. At that time it was Baby Boomer Parents and Gen X at home as their children. The show had nostalgia from the 1960'snd 70s' . in a way never seen before, like the Greatest Generation wasn't there to censor the baby boomers so it felt a bit more authentic than previous shows that took place in that time. There wasn't a real political message because it was from a kids POV who hated that in every direction. Chicken Parma: This (2022) will be the first time since 1976 that another sports event has directly followed the Super Bowl. In 1976, the final round of the Phoenix Open golf tournament was broadcast immediately following Super Bowl X on CBS, and set a record for the most number of viewers to have ever watched golf on television (although the final round of the 1997 Masters, Tiger Woods' first career win in that event, would shatter the 1976 Phoenix Open ratings record). There may have been one or two other times (maybe other Phoenix Opens?) that a sports event immediately followed the Super Bowl. But in all those prior examples, the Super Bowl began around 2:05 P.M. EST.
Fun fact: the 2009 Open overlapped with Cards/Steelers (as I mentioned in a previous JG9 vid) when Kenny Perry and Charley Hoffman went to a playoff. I don't think NBC's ever had one though. The funniest they had was when Rickie Fowler won it *right at* 6:00 et in 2019, I know cause I switched right over to Monk (not really giving a rat's ass about the Rams or the Patriots), the season two episode with Gary Cole as a Hugh Hefner-type--it was greeeeeeaaaaaaat
God, how I miss the 80s and 90s. Shows like The Wonder Years, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Rescue 911...all make me reflect on a time when things made sense.
It was only a war show because Dan Lauria (Jack Arnold) would only take the role if he was a Korean War vet. Dan Lauria was a Vietnam War vet himself. The father was supposed to be Elliott Gould.
I only ever saw one episode of TWY but it's hard to imagine that they ever did better -- I know that's a weird combination, but there it is. Fred Savage and his dad were traveling at night for some reason, and one bad thing happened after another, raising the tension between the two of them to the breaking point. At the show's climax, the car has a flat tire and Fred Savage decides that *he* is strong enough to break the lug-nut, after his prime-aged father has tried and failed. They have an extremely heated exchange and ... and then Fred breaks the lug-nut. Absolutely fantastic stuff: I remember sitting there for a long moment with my mouth open and my hand on top of my head. TV writing is not generally that good even with the classier properties out there.
I noticed the narrator was different for the pilot. It didn't sound right. So glad ABC figured this out quickly and made the change. Otherwise the show wouldn't have been nearly as good. That show, perhaps more than any other, was made by the narrator, which was Daniel Stern. He began on the second episode and subsequent re runs of the pilot featured his voice as well. The opening credits were nearly as important with Joe Cocker's rendition of "With a little help from my friends". Such a fantastic show that really made you feel the emotions of the ensemble cast.
@@CTubeMan Agreed. It will be interesting to see how Mahomes' career works out. Running QB's often wear down sooner than pocket passers. Right now Mahomes looks unstoppable.
Who narrated the teaser at 11:58? The script replaces the pilot episode's monologue with something more fitting for promotion during the game, but the voice sounds nothing like Daniel Stern.
I wonder if network affiliates might pressure their networks in future years to extend Super Bowl postgame coverage until 11 P.M. EST, with local news to follow in the Eastern half of the country. By having local news immediately following the big game, local stations would be delighted for their news would get the Super Bowl lead-in.
That’s probably what would be happening now if ABC had stuck to their guns and aired China Beach Although it would depend on what the top local news stories of the day would be (other than in the city where the game is being held, and the home markets of the two participating teams)
@@TimmyTickle If it was *CHINA BEACH,* local news might not start til 12:30am on the East Coast. This sudden swap actually allowed *Eyewitness News* (or whatever you call your local news show) to actually start at 11pm.

Their episode, a two-parter involving an explosive device inside a patient and held in place by young paramedic played by guest star Christina Ricci. Having said that, it's a show that needs to, end, along, with, SVU, at least, NCIS, will, likely, end, after, an abbreviated 20th Season, (though, a much finer program will, no doubt, be taken down, to make room, for, it).
CBS will push NCIS to a 20th for no other reason than to tie Gunsmoke as longest-running (outside of 60 Minutes) CBS show. That said, I'd rather just end it than have it go out like Criminal Intent, petering out with an eight-ep run on USA in May/June 2011
@@mgb4692 Yeah, but, it'll be an abbreviated Season, (that'll push a better program off the air), it'll be better, than, this Season, but, still, will give it a nasty legacy on the way out the door, 60 Minutes, (and, SNL), are, both, on, for, only, two reasons, Tradition, and, The, Lowest Common Denominator.
It made a whole lot of sense to air the program ABC did air instead of what they originally planned to air, even in Washington where those interested in military-oriented shows vis-a-vis Airwolf would have STILL preferred to see Washington highlights and celebrations instead of a TV show, and even if Frank Herzog was still covering for WJLA after calling the Super Bowl for Washington, they still would have changed the channel to see what George Michael (WRC) and Glenn Brenner (WUSA) had to say; not that Herzog was bad, but WJLA at the time was a third-place station in essentially a two-station market dominated on the news end by Jim Vance (WRC) and Gordon Peterson (WUSA). ABC is lucky the Super Bowl didn't drag on all night since Washington ran away with the medicine ball, and The Wonder Years became iconic and definitive of the network in the turn from the 80s to the 90s.
P.S. It would be a real ratings medicine ball had the Broncos won since KUSA (aka 9News) dominated Denver in the 80s, except Denver didn't win. They did make up for it though when the Broncos beat the Packers in XXXII, ironically doing so at Jack Murphy Stadium ten years later, in the last ever NBC Super Bowl before Sunday Night Football came online for the Peacock.
I see the trap you set there JG9, with your 'Animal House' disinfo about the bombing of a certain harbor. A well laid trap, my good man. A well laid trap!...lol
I think what helped the ratings was the show was about Baby Boomers in their teens in 1968 and that generation was about to hit 40 in 1988. So that gave them a break from their midlife crisis and allowed them to relive their younger days with Kevin Arnold. The Vietnam War was overdone at that point so good on ABC.
I will say that it was a good decision only logistically in terms of time management. The Wonder Years would’ve done well regardless of when it premiered. China Beach would’ve stayed on the air maybe twice as long if it had premiere during the Super Bowl. Because it was still a pretty good show.

Glad you enjoyed something that day 😆
@@scottaznavourian3720 coz it wasn't the game. I did thoroughly enjoy this last super bowl, however I did not expect to even see a Bengal team that far yet
Wasn't expecting a mention of China Beach on JG9...my Army vet mom loved that show back in the 80s.
Can you remember what Channel 4 aired afterwards?
@@TimmyTickle Ha ha - think it was straight to the closedown logo. May have occasionally aired something like Spectacular Sporting Bloopers and Football Funnies.
Remembering now I recall the timings because I was watching at a friend's house and had left the VCR recording at home. With the game running long, I was nervous the tape was going to run out as I had a recording of the Championship games programme on it first.
Makes me glad to live in Australia where it starts at 10:30 in the morning so I can either take the day off to watch it or watch/listen to it at work
England showed American football in the 1980s?
When I see John Getz I just remember the guy who Jeff goldbloom maimed with fly vomit 😆
@@scottaznavourian3720 He absolutely earned it, cruelly enjoyable.
You should do a vid on the SB XXVI halftime show and how FOX counterprogramming destroyed it.
YES!!!! Absolutely!!!
Word. In Living Color
Not to pre-empt JG9, but Peyton’s Places did a feature on that halftime counterprogramming.
Similarly, Homicide, was, never, a real ratings giant, but, was, totally, a critical darling.
Love the channel, bro! Just found you a week ago. Go Jags!
This was awesome. I love football and TV broadcasting history, so your content is perfect. Thanks!
Plus the 2nd historical memory from
this big game with not only the debut of the classic show “The Wonder Years.” It was also the debut of former lead Olympic Hockey & MLB Commentator Al Michaels first time calling the Super Bowl as well.

“Airwolf” lasted for three seasons on CBS when it moved to first-run syndication in 1987 where it remained for another season or two. I remember “Airwolf” since I was a kid.

(Please note: I paused this at the 2:55 mark...)
I remember Super Bowl XIX quite well... here in Buffalo and environs, we had a real bad blizzard that day, and the snowfall/subsequent snowdrifts made travel nearly impossible for a good part of the upcoming work week.
MacGruder and Loud -- that makes me think of the MacGruber sketches in SNL. 😂😂

The pilot episode for “The Wonder Years” is one of the best pilots in television history

Huge misfire for Steven Bochco before getting back to business with NYPD Blue.

Then there are the memorable Super Bowl commercials: Mean Joe Green, Budweiser Clydesdales Post-9/11 Commercial, Apple's 1984.
I still can't fathom the fact that some wartime soap opera "China Beach" outlasted a REAL war drama "Tour Of Duty".

This (2022) will be the first time since 1976 that another sports event has directly followed the Super Bowl.

I only ever saw one episode of TWY but it's hard to imagine that they ever did better -- I know that's a weird combination, but there it is.
Interesting that I actually heard several of the Cancelled Shows and I arrived in USA in June 1989.

I have to see that first show
this is great
China Beach was an awesome series!
Airwolf was that show when I was a kid
Too bad, that, The, USA Network, ruined it, so, that, it could get enough episodes, for, syndication, there's no other reason, period.
NBC did better with Super Bowl XLIII. They went with The Office and that changed the series forever and made it the icon it is today.
damn I've never heard of The Winder Years
I see the trap you set there JG9, with your 'Animal House' disinfo about the bombing of a certain harbor.
Or what I call the “Two Decade Rule”.
Who is the narrator in that Wonder Years promo? It doesn't sound like Daniel Stern.
I will say that it was a good decision only logistically in terms of time management. The Wonder Years would’ve done well regardless of when it premiered. China Beach would’ve stayed on the air maybe twice as long if it had premiere during the Super Bowl. Because it was still a pretty good show.
Is that The Doctor from “Star Trek: Voyager” as the gym coach on “The Wonder Years”?
The same, also, JohnnyCab in Total Recall, (the good one).
The actor, Robert Picardo, also played a doctor on "China Beach."
@tygrkhat4087 A black man from, Spin City, also, appeared, he, was, in the criminally underrated, Hamburger Hill.
@@matthewdaley746 Michael Boatman. Whatever happened to him?
@@tygrkhat4087 - He’s on a boat!
And I thought the one good thing that I liked from Super Bowl 22 is seeing Washington winning their 2nd Ring. Interesting tho.
