  • In this video, Andrew shares 2 important watering tips that we use to maintain some of the healthiest deciduous bonsai in North America and keep them healthy during the hottest summer temperatures. First, we water often and water everything at the start of a hot day to get the plants well hydrated before the heat arrives, and water freely without checking during the hottest days. Second, we Hamizu (leaf water) or overhead water a few times when the temperatures are a the peak on hot summer days. By doing these two things, we have never lost a bonsai to the heat, or had any signs of heat stress or heat damage to the foliage. These two watering strategies are how we maintain some of the most beautiful and lush deciduous bonsai in North America, and you can do this too to help protect your bonsai in the hot summer heat!

Love this channel. I’d really like to see more long-form content on deciduous. I’m in Australia so the intensives aren’t an option but Rakuyo is the best deciduous channel going.

Always! I did this when I lived in the hot and humid midwest and it also worked quite well in that climate! Good overall technique!

    Thank you for everything Andrew!
I have heard that very hot and humid conditions are good for fungal problems on the leaves, since I heard that I was afraid to mist or water the leaves of my trees. That information was misunderstood by me? Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks again.

I also heard that, but I do believe that because it is so hot and dry, the water will evaporate rapidly before any fungal issue can occur.

I used to live in St. Louis, Missouri where it was hot and humid, and I would still do these two tips and had some of the healthiest trees in town back then. I'd definitely recommend, maybe leaf watering just slightly less frequently.
