This is such a grate video for beginners. I've had a bonsai for just over a year and defo neglected it in that time. Now summer has come and I'm sorting out the garden and house plants, I've gone down a bit of a beginners rabbit hole in the last 2 weeks for bonsai after find, in the greenhouse, some walnut saplings I'd potted up last year from the lovely squirrels stash in one of our flower beds, with the intention of doing bonsai with them. All the advices seems spot on and telling people to do their own research is always grate advice as everyone's environment and needs will be different and you can't cover all bases yourself.... I also love you saying don't worry about what others say. I've started following another bonsai channel (bonsai heirloom) and he has similar thoughts; the hobby is ment to be fun and relaxing. If it's working for you and you're enjoying it just go with it. At the end of the day if the trees look good who cares right.
You hit on the nail with Bonsai to have fun. I lot of local native trees, some tropicals and some Japanese trees like maples and pines. Here in SA these are the common bonsai trees, Celtis africana, Senegalia burkei, Olea europaea L. subsp. africana, Portulacaria afra, Adansonia digitata, Schotia brachypetala and few others that I still don't. Most our native acacia trees are used as Bonsai Material, grow easy from seed and cuttings. I'm experimenting with Sausage Tree (Kigelia Africana) have big tree in my yard and plant the seeds and they germinate easy, do well with root pruning and 3 thats starting to get nice fat trunks and they are not older than 3 years. As always love your vids. Keep it Up!
Hell yeah, as a persons who watched all your videos ( twice ) thought you can’t get more content packed in one video. You prove me wrong, awesome and informative content. Very accurate with tools. I’m running just hybrid cutter, anything else except wire are “normal” tools.
Great video Jelle. I'm only a few years into bonsai and none of my trees look like the trees worked on by many of the people online and so I find it difficult to translate what they do with their trees to my own little ones. With your videos I can use what you demonstrate and I remember your tips. You and Peter Chan are wonderful teachers that help novices like me a great deal by making this hobby accessible 😊. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Well you can start by putting it in a 22:53 Larger pot and thickening the trunk to actually make a real bonsai. It takes years and training your tree to make it actually look like a real dwarf tree in nature but there is a knew age art to whatever just don’t know what your doing
Yet another brilliant video... Thanks so much... Actually, this particular one goes to the top of the class... Your little bit of humour makes a difference. Well done, Jelle
This has been an awesome starter video!! I’ve kinda jumped off the deep and started before doing my research😅. A good friend bought me a starter kit and I now have 5 or 6 saplings… all different kinds of plants…that I have NO IDEA how to really take care of properly… And 2 or 3 small trees that I can turn into bonsai trees with some more time and patience it looks like… your video has given me some great starting advice. Thank you!
Absolutely brilliant - everything a novice could want in a single video. Thanks for the shout out about your books. Having watched I can definitely confirm I am still a dummie! Great stuff Jelle :)
I bought 5 bonsai, maple, black pine, one with orange balls, one with green balls, and one with really cool exposed roots. Apologies for not knowing the names but the tags were in Japanese. I threw them out before translating. I am now starting my research now. It is much more to this than I realized, Mr. Miyagi made it look easy...
Glad to hear you got started. In the end, the basics start with keeping a plant in a pot alive. The rest follows. I do not know mr miyagi, so not sure how he makes it look easy.

This is one of the best "bonsai for dummies" videos out there. I live in Norway, and after watching many of your videos and others, I decided to start with bonsai myself. You say that you have some of your bonsai out in the winter. Here I live it can drop down to minus 25 degrees during some parts of the winter. What would you do to your trees if it got so cold? I believe I have to put them in a place where there is a bit warmer? Otherwise, love your videos.
Again a great video Jelle! A tip a always remember, but I can't remember where I heard is : tip 1 listen to the master. Tip 2 ignore the master 😂 Bonsai is an art, as is painting. But there is a great difference between Breughel and Picasso. One should explore and find out what trees and styles he/she likes. At least that is what I do. Looking forward to the next video
Thanks for the sub! Olives are GREAT for bonsai. Try to get a wild one instead of a fruiting tree, as these are even better! I will do a video on Olive bonsai development in a few weeks. That is a follow-up on this one: th-cam.com/video/t9nHfS_iXIg/w-d-xo.html

Really an excellent video, thank you! However, a few questions came to my mind during the video. When you said that you could do it with native trees, I immediately thought of my "grandpa tree". It's an "Acer pseudoplatanus" tree that started growing on my grandpa's balcony while I was caring for my grandpa until he died. I somehow want to believe that the life that was taken from him at that time has passed into this tree. That was about three years ago and I took the tree with me and have been looking after it ever since, it's grown quite a lot, but it's also looking boring and straight right now. The idea of turning the tree into an eye-catcher, apart from the fact that I'm always being asked why there's a tree on my balcony, would be really great especially because I could actively spend time with it. With that in mind, of course, I don't want the tree to suffer or, in the worst case, die. I would be extremely happy to know how I should best proceed to minimize the risk and how I can give it character, if anyone has some tips! And is a shallow pot really necessary, or can I leave it in the existing one? But now I will start with my Ficus Ginseng, which was the very first plant I received as a gift from my mother. Best wishes from Germany
sounds like a valuable tree to you. so best not to take big risks with it. That species has fairly large leaves for bonsai. I think keeping it as a well pruned patio tree might be a better idea. If you wish to bonsai it, do you have a club nearby? Hands on in person might be safest
Hey Jelle I think all the points are wrong, except for the one about having to watch all your videos 😂😉 Very good video 👍🏻, excellently put together and clearly presented. I bet you could have go on for another 2 hours 😉. There is so much knowledge to impart. And you do a Great Job on this! The most important thing for me is the health of the plants and having fun and enjoying the hobby. It doesn't have to be a perfect bonsai. Many thanks and best regards
Great video jelle 💪😁 and thanks again for the Brazilian raintree cutting you sent me 2 years ago? It's not so small now. And I have successfully rooted one cutting from ut.
Harga nya termasuk murah mas. Aku mencoba menanam pohon anting Putri mas. Masih pemula. Sayang nya di Pontianak Kalimantan Barat jenis 2 yang di bonsai kesulitan bahan. Nggak sebanyak di Jawa ber macem 2. ADA serut. ADA beringin. Ada Sancang. Dll. ❤
As Always Jelle, I hit the like button before I have watched your vid’s. Your Bonsai channel is up there with the best. Thank you for all your hard in sharing them. 👌
Its so true, and i couldn't agree more, i've watched lots of bonsai videos too but honestly you're the most (if not the only) reliable source, and I do hope u demonstrate more on how to plant cuttings especially on plants like junipers, cypress, pine.
Good video. I have an idea for a video; how about a guide like this covering lots of kinds of trees, explaining when is the best time of year to take cuttings and set and remove air layers. i have about 10 or 15 trees that are all for bonsai but all are pre bonsai because i never know the best time to play about with them (i mean WORK on them!)

Still have not started my first bonsai. Have been focussing on just learning to garden first. I started a few tree varieties from seed 2 years ago. Have a plum tree that has a deformed twist in trunk just above ground that will maybe be perfect for my first go. Started some pine trees as well but the needles are super long. So unsure how easy they would be. Any advice on where to keep or display a bonsai. I am aways stumped on where I would even put my first tree. Was thinking possibly in a corner of my greenhouse or something?
Ohw thank you so much! I think.. it is a dificult thing to do. Trees prefer outside very much and the things we do to create bonsai require optimal health. Not saying it cannot be done, some species will survive indoors. But it does mike life a lot more complex
I chose a juniper with a split trunk 4 years old.... BUT didn't do research. I don't have an outside just windows... so hopefully it doesn't die but oh well
My wife bought me a starter kit like the one you described not to get haha. She knows I have wanted to pick up the hobby. I tried several and the only one that has germinated is a bonsai “ flame “ tree. Is this worth trying?
Hi julle I have questions normally when we make bonsai from nursery store tree if I do something wrong how long the tree will show up the sign of drying (I mean after repot 3 months my tree still look ok that mean they will be ok or have to be longer ) thank you for sharing l learn a lot from you thank you very much 😊
Hello I have a beatiful Japanese maple in my yard, and would like to cut off a branch and turn it into Bonsai, Is there any tips that I should really be aware of before I dive in? Thanks! great video!!!
I suggest anybody wanting to learn about Bonsai also consider joining a local Bonsai club. Clubs are usually full of like minded people with a wealth of knowledge.
Just gpt my first bonsai. I think its a ficus there wasnt a tag though. My question is its a good size stump but its cut flat on yop with four or five good size branches growing out the sides. Will i just let the branches grow big around the trump? Or do i eventually remove them and repot them ?
two atyle options. informat upright, where you allo on branch to grow into a new trunk, one a side branch and the rest gooes..Or a broome where you use all current branches for a new crown. Check pictures for both styles!
I recently bought Japanese maple bonsai seeds and I live in a very hot area. I'm worried they will dry up and die if I leave them out when they grow and they don't have any room in the little greenhouse that came with them. What would be a good solution to this? Btw, I like your vids! I've been meaning to get a bonsai tree for a long time, so your channel has been helping me out a lot! :D

After the initial total beginner phase I find three types of videos very useful:
1. Problem videos
2. Species specific videos
3. Season specific videos
I learn a lot from hearing you tackle a specific problem. It can be a pest, a design challenge, or perhaps a tough call balancing health of a tree with getting results fast.
It’s also very interesting to dive deeper into specific species. I have a pretty good idea now about the general practice of repotting, winter protection, pruning, etc. But learning more about specific species is what many of us need. There are a lot of ”how to repot” videos, but much rarer to find what to think about when repotting a specific species.
And finally, I find it increasibly useful when I you make a timely post of a video of the sort ”summer pruning” just as summer approaches. Very helpful!
Having fun is the first and last thing that is needed I think. Of course you need a tree of some sort and some basic tools. Experience comes with time, on styling as well as on horticultural level.
Hey Jelle
I think all the points are wrong, except for the one about having to watch all your videos 😂😉
Very good video 👍🏻, excellently put together and clearly presented.
Any time!
Harga nya termasuk murah mas. Aku mencoba menanam pohon anting Putri mas. Masih pemula. Sayang nya di Pontianak Kalimantan Barat jenis 2 yang di bonsai kesulitan bahan. Nggak sebanyak di Jawa ber macem 2. ADA serut. ADA beringin. Ada Sancang. Dll. ❤
cool, would love to be able to grow proper banyang
As Always Jelle, I hit the like button before I have watched your vid’s. Your Bonsai channel is up there with the best. Thank you for all your hard in sharing them. 👌
So nice of you! Thank you so much!
Excellent video!!! Keep up the good work
This is excellent
Thx!
Its so true, and i couldn't agree more, i've watched lots of bonsai videos too but honestly you're the most (if not the only) reliable source, and I do hope u demonstrate more on how to plant cuttings especially on plants like junipers, cypress, pine.
well thank you kindly!
I use most of those cutting tools on my coral pruning and I do mean marine aquarium coral
Nice! Love good marine aquaria!
So much information 🤯😂
Thank you for sharing! 👍
Thanks for the idea! I feel at times that I have exhausted the propagation topic though. You do not find the information I have on this enough?
@@GrowingBonsai ignore me dude, that was the first video of yours id seen, the algoritham has since made my question pointless. thanks for all the good information mate.
@@adzstanyer3000 no worries. I also have a backlog of comments the size of niagara falls, and am slow to respond to them. Glad you have found some good info!
Excellent tutorial Mate.
Many thanks!
Good advices , thank you.
youre welcome!
Thank you Jelle, great info. Great approach 👍 👏
My pleasure!
You have a good soul.thank you
So nice of you, thank you!
Congratulations Jelle, I think it’s the most useful video I’ve seen so far as a beginner! One, maybe stupid question: can I grow bonsai indoors?
Ohw thank you so much!
I think.. it is a dificult thing to do. Trees prefer outside very much and the things we do to create bonsai require optimal health. Not saying it cannot be done, some species will survive indoors. But it does mike life a lot more complex
Dank je Jelle. Goede, fijne en informatieve video 👍🏻😁
I chose a juniper with a split trunk 4 years old.... BUT didn't do research. I don't have an outside just windows... so hopefully it doesn't die but oh well
i am concerned yrs might be slowly suffering to death..
Demistifying Bonsai with Jelle. Excellent video.
Thank you, Jelle.
:) thx. Spread the word?!
Very good video. I enjoy. Thanks
thanks so much!
My wife bought me a starter kit like the one you described not to get haha. She knows I have wanted to pick up the hobby. I tried several and the only one that has germinated is a bonsai “ flame “ tree. Is this worth trying?
It is always worth starting them. Just enoy growing and see how far you can go.
This has been a great help, I have 2 young black pine a few older maple which have grown out. I'm unsure where to cut them down. Can you help.
Rob
dificult to do over internet.. :(
Really great video, and great information 🎉🎉
I have trees I have been working on👍 thank you!
Deze ga ik opslaan en hier kom ik zeker terug! ik moet toch maar is een boom gaan kopen haha
:) Nu kan je er niet meer omheen!
"Have fun"... soooo tru
Excellent video.
Thanks a bunch!
Thank you, your videos Are great
Thank you so much!
Hi julle I have questions normally when we make bonsai from nursery store tree if I do something wrong how long the tree will show up the sign of drying (I mean after repot 3 months my tree still look ok that mean they will be ok or have to be longer ) thank you for sharing l learn a lot from you thank you very much 😊
The Basic Definition of Bonsai: A tree in a pot that resembles a tree.
Once you have the tree, you can start shaping and maintaining the tree.(1:45+)
Hello I have a beatiful Japanese maple in my yard, and would like to cut off a branch and turn it into Bonsai, Is there any tips that I should really be aware of before I dive in? Thanks! great video!!!
Look into airlayering!

I suggest anybody wanting to learn about Bonsai also consider joining a local Bonsai club. Clubs are usually full of like minded people with a wealth of knowledge.
You are ASBOLUTELY right. I do not understand how I cut that part of the clip in the edits. I did have it indeed!
Great video Jelle 👊👊👊
Appreciate it!
What is the soil you prefer? The soil around my bonsai that looks like a baby cedar is in black box with cement hard soil. Is that normal?
th-cam.com/video/i1zof0uTyW0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=o3kelXIxYGf9afR-
I do not find it normal. Could it be just dry?
Nice vid😊
amazing! thanks a lot!
You are welcome! Do explore the channel. There are lots of videos on the details of what is in this video
Great vid, thanks.
Glad you liked it!
22:30 i second this lol 😂
yes!
Nice work
Thx!
I find growing things in a greenhouse gives you more headaches than out, because transitioning them causes lots of problems.
Do i need a knob cutter and a straight cutter from the start? I'm thinking about buying only a knob cutter or a hybrid tool (more expensive).
Nah, you can initially get by with very basic household tools even.
