SpaceX Starship launching from Florida: supported by NASA, feared by its competitors

  • NASA very much needs SpaceX's Starship to begin launch operations out of Florida. But as the FAA's environmental impact statement process is ongoing for launch out of Cape Canaveral, we're seeing just how desperate SpaceX competitors ULA and Blue Origin are to slow down Starship's potential growth.

ULA: "SpaceX will launch so much it will threaten our business"
SpaceX: "You were put out of business a decade ago when we invented reusable rockets"

I agree with what you say about the anti competitive EIS comments of ULA and Blue Origin. It's poor form from both of them and they should focus on their own limited / yet to be realised launch operations respectively.

Was amused by your Delta AL analogy, noticed you said “Delta launches” instead of “Delta flights.” Totally natural mistake for a space-focused commentator! But seriously, you have a great point about the hypocrisy of ULA and BO sticking their very self-interested noses into the FAA comment process. Hopefully the FAA understands what’s going on here. But as a pilot, I instinctively go straight to the legendary pilot-derived FAA mission statement: “We’re Not Happy Until You’re Not Happy.” My wife got me the t-shirt.

The SpaceX Starship will be launching from Florida soon, but not until the testing is complete. Once Starship can take off and be caught by the chopsticks proficiently, it will be lifting off from the Cape. This is the third person who has complained about the competitors of Starship sending articles to the FAA about what the FAA already has concerns about. The two commercial spacefight systems are making noise because the SpaceX Starship won't just be causing the Falcon rockets to be obsolete...
The FAA wants to hear concerns from the citizens they represent, but the competitors are making a point.?? I’m sure the FAA has and will be looking into the concerns mentioned in every article with a higher intent.??
‘Just let the FAA do their job and let us get there already.’

Is Blue Origin a legit space company? Why have they still not reached orbit?
ULA makes some cool stuff, but in the slowest way possible. They have had over 10 years to watch SpaceX be successful and then to see reusability coming, yet they haven't done a single test or mission with reusable hardware. The closest they came was dropping LOFTID for NASA. Its like none of them are even serious about this being a business.

Blue origin is very slow. And ULA being slow is also in part Blue origin's fault. They sold the BE-4 to ULA for the Vulcan Centaur as a ready to fly engine, but it was not ready to fly. It took them 7 years to deliver an engine that was supposed to take 2 years.

Its all status nonsense. They can't compete, so instead of copying, they won't even consider "looking like SpaceX" because then they would be on Musk's coattails, which they dont want to do.

Ironically this is exactly what Skydio is doing to DJI right now. They can't compete so they're trying to get them banned with lawfare.
    Pretty crap behavior.

One reason most launches are carried out from the Cape is that it's right on the waterfront and spent stages can be dropped into the water without a problem. Starship on the other hand is designed to be fully reuseable. If the competition is 'worried' about a single disaster crippling all launch capabilities then maybe they could fund Starship launch facilities in the southwestern US. Maybe White Sands could be a workable launch site. They would need to put in a methane pipeline and LOX plant though.

Or perhaps a site on the water so you don't have to worry about stuff falling on people, something as close to the equator as you can get. Sounds an awful lot like Boca Chica.

SpaceX has no monopoly, because they have never done anything to harm competition. In fact, they offer advice and materials expertise to many small space startups. SpaceX has never, and i would guess will never, try to use government to hobble competition.

@@OOL-UV2 No. "Success" meaning the rocket will actually take off, complete its mission & the re-useable rocket(if it has one) can return to earth safely. Don't worry about Vulcan. It has to leave earth first. Without blowing up or destroying the launch pad.
