The dislikes are definitely from people that don’t know how to ride a bike. Just picked up my 2021 low rider S and have been following your videos for awhile. I’m excited to see the review on how the chain feels.
You can change gearing on a belt system to make it more highway friendly for the older Baggers that don't have six speed pre 2007 models and you can go the other way for more power and less top end. Hope this helps.
For those who may be interested, gearing on the belt drives are generally changed with the FRONT pulley. 2 different, well known manufacturers offer pulleys to both raise and lower the final drive ratio. In fact you even have the choice of aluminum or steel. I hope that helps. I didn't mention the names of the companies as it might infringe on TH-cam policies. GOD BLESS T.S. RACING
Chris, great video. Currently has belt drive n recently discovered that my rear belt pulley has slight bent whivh attached(stamped ring) on back side of oem pulley during my routine maintenance from HD dealer. They recommend strongly to replace a new oem pulley. I am in the fence post considering going with chain conversion if possible. Questions , once I installed a chain drive, do i need to re- dyno my bike, furthermore, can i still utilize belt cover with chain drive, and woould this grease sling all over the rear n especially my clamshell saddlebags? Appreciate your feedback.
I will pretty much always recommend a chain conversion. It’s just my style. As far as getting the bike on a dino, no you do not have to get a different tune because it would change nothing, even if you went with a different gear ratio you still would not have to change the tune because, the engine itself is doing the exact same work. It’s just the final drive ratio that has changed if that makes sense. Yes, I have known people that still utilize the belt guard with the chain. I don’t think it’s necessarily advised because the chain moves and kind of slaps around a lot. But I know people that have kept it on for several hundred miles with no issue. I removed mine instantly obviously. As far as grease getting all over your bike, not if you use good products and you don’t over apply. I have used maxima spray wax with amazing results. No sling off. Just don’t over apply. I use muc off degreaser to clean it and remove old wax
Thank you! And thanks for watching from all the way over there. It’s Always so cool to see how far away people are that watch my stuff. I don’t wanna give away many details but it’s definitely worth it I think!

What has held me back so far is the weight concerns. You didn't by any chance look at or compare weights did you? I'm probably making too much of the weight anyway. I think this video might push me over the edge and convince me to do it. Well this video and the review video :)
Thank you!! And the GoPro Seems to be doing well so far, knock on wood! For whatever reason when I film a lot of chopped up segments and start and stop with him sometimes stuff like this happens. I don’t understand why. My software is up-to-date and everything. As far as weight goes I did not pay too much attention. Obviously the chain is for sure heavier than the belt, but the rear sprocket has less weight to it than the stock pulley sprocket that is on the rear wheel. So it’s a trade off for sure. If you do wind up putting any additional weight on at all I would estimate maybe one or 2 pounds at Max? Pros definitely outweigh the cons on this !!
Hey there awesome video. Quick question. The JMS pulley tool you listed, did you use that during this process. If so I will go back and watch again. Great work again. Thanks for putting up with the heat for us

Thanks for the video! I just got a 2021 FXLRS last week for my birthday. Your channel was definitely an inspiration! Quick question if you know. What sizes did you go with on the cable extensions and brake line extension?
@@RidinDad honestly nothing more than I like the low maintenance. I've also had one snap at highway speeds, that was fun. As for your gopro, you may want to replace the sd cards first and see if that's the issue
I rotate between 3 cards and I have this one labeled now so I’m gonna be experimenting with it :/. That sucks that you e had a chain snap on you. I bet the bike suffered some pretty rough damage from that
How’s this speedkings chain kit holding up for you? I’ve got about 2k miles on my kit and it’s riding good! but for some reason I’m scared screws are going to back out etc. i do clean and lube every 700 miles.
Found one for my FXBB Same as yours just read chain even though on the same gear ratio as you because mine has that torque it has 142 torque in like 146 hp so I figure that would be bulletproof set up for something like that to ride wheelies and piss around on and just have fun jumping off curbs and shit 🤘🥃
How often do the sprockets have to be changed?? I know the belt is a little more work in the event of it snapping/breaking/ripping. But how often are you going to have to be breaking everything open again to replace the sprockets? Every 10-20k miles?
I doubt it. I would assume the main shaft sprocket would at least do 25-30k miles minimum. And the rear probably the same if not slightly less. But I’ve seen guys running the same chain conversion for over 40-45k miles with still no issues at all. None of these chain kits have life expectancy on it so time will tell for my build
Nice! To each his own, but for me, why spend all that money for a slight improvement in torque? I could see if you are doing a monster build for the 117, then the chain conversion is required, but for a stock motor it seems a waste........unless of course in the future you plan to build up the motor.
Thanks man. Well there’s a few pros to the chain kit like I mentioned. Not necessarily to withstand extra torque. Changing the gearing changes the characteristics of the acceleration and the feel of the bike. In general the chain delivers better throttle feel and response over the belt drive too. And it really isn’t that expensive when you look at Harley upgrades. I mean the price of a chain kit is just about the same price as an air cleaner or even less sometimes.
Has the bike had any leaks? Specifically where the shifter tower meets the other half? Once I removed the primary I had to replace that gasket too. It was leaking substantially.
Nope, 0 leaks anywhere. The gasket at the inner primary? Or the gasket between the inner and outer primaries? I've never had to replace the inner primary gasket before and I've done several chain conversions and even a forwards to mids conversion

If you are cleaning it properly, with a degreaser or similar chain cleaner there will definitely be some black liquid. Unless you are talking about after it is clean and then you go for a ride and you see the black liquid. That sounds like it might be your chain wax or lubricant breaking down and getting dirty. If your sprockets are wearing they should not become a liquid. They would just have a little bit of the metal come off and you would generally see that overtime on your teeth
The installment video was good. But good luck keeping the bolts in the rear sprocket since no Loctite was put on them I know you torqued but they still come out.
Either you did not watch the video fully, or you were unable to actually see what was going on even though I talked about it for some reason you did not understand. The grade 8 bolts that hold the sprocket onto the rear wheel, are Held in place by the locking washer that fits over them. That’s why I constantly had to adjust them until the washer went over it. The washer has cut out for those bolt heads and as long as that washer is over top of them the bolts are unable to turn in any direction. I believe I heard you say a 53 vs. a 55 would give you more low torque...if so then you would be incorrect, the 55 will give you more bottom end, that is if you stay the same front sprocket
Felt torque...interesting. If I want more torque at the tire I go with a larger rear sprocket hence a better bottom end. Is felt torque like if I have a loud exhaust I feel like I have more power ?
No. Obviously you’re just being an ass now. It doesn’t change the actual torque of your bike because you’re not changing engine components. So yes, torque that you feel you gear up which you know.
@RidinDad I was asking you a straight question but you go to calling out names, dad....ha ha funny sounds like the the kind of dad that ends up on the ground in front of his family
I assumed you were being sarcastic with your loud exhaust comment. If you weren’t I apologize. If you’re being sincere than yes it’s felt tq but it’s really there. Quicker acceleration with taller gearing in the rear. Smaller rear sprocket gets lower acceleration and high top speed. Your comment about being on the ground in front of my family is a little absurd man
Except you skip sections of installing parts and they’re already back on. You picked and chose certain things to add. Also, the torque for the primary cover bolts are in inch lbs which is equivalent to about 11-12lbs torque which is nothing and would not snap any of those bolts.
There’s tons of guys snapping derby cover bolts prior to reaching tq spec. And I’m sure that’s what you were talking about as the tq spec for the primary is higher. What exactly did I pick and choose to install without covering in the video?
Will this help with wheelies? I’ve always heard for doing wheelies and “drifts” a chain helps significantly, does the low rider s wheelie? I’ve only seen one video of one doing a wheelie and I want a wheelie-able Harley. I know all the dynas could but i haven’t heard much about the new softail frame
Yes the low rider is definitely a wheelie able bike even from factory. I e seen guys take it off the show room floor and wheelie it with no modifications. The chain helps a lot depending on which gear ratio you choose. You can tailor it for higher top speed or quicker acceleration. The chain also helps by lessening some of the stretch you get from a belt
The main reason I went with the 53 was because it was right in the middle of all of my options. I was debating on leaving it close to the stock gearing or not but I felt like having a little bit of that extra torque would be enjoyable for me. And I did not want to go to high because I did not want to take away too much from my TopSpeed and abuse my motor with high rpm. I think the 53 is pretty perfect after writing it for a decent amount today as well as the first day I had it. Perfect balance of both worlds
@@RidinDad I am trying to find this as well...for the mainshaft nut. Everywhere I look they only carry it for Twin Cams. As long as I get one for a 2006+ TC should it even matter since that is when the TC got the six speed?

Spacer may have some play either less or more. Very small amount. You need clearance on both sides for the chain. Very narrow space for it not to rub on anything. And the spacers need to be the same for front and rear sprocket otherwise the chain won’t track straight and you’ll have so many issues. Why would you even want to play with the spacers?
@@RidinDad im not playing with them. i was wondering what size i should order. but someonetold me that i need 7/8 inner spacer for dyna 2015. thanks man

@@RidinDad ahhh having had the kit installed for quite a while would you still recommend it? and how are you liking the bigger rear sprocket size you chose?
I love it. Definitely felt the difference but nothing negative at higher speeds. Really good feel. And yeah. Wouldn’t hurt man. Get all that super thick heavy wax off and put some light stuff on made for riding. Why not
If I didn’t say it in the video I can’t help you unfortunately. Sorry man, I don’t remember what it is off hand. I thought I said it though. 11/16 sounds familiar?
I went chain drive years ago on my electra glide , belts are garbage , weak , expensive and labor intensive , much less reliable , I've went through 3 of them and left me stranded 2000 miles from home .
@@RidinDad look up connerfxdb TH-cam, the m8 softail needs soo much more modification to be able to hang with a dyna in the twisties. Low Rider is a DYNA motorcycle, softails should have never stolen the name and I will never consider the softail a Low Rider or Street Bob. After you get done on his channel head over to kruesi originals and see how bad those m8 engines dump oil during a wheelie. He's currently creating a fix for that.
I’m well acquainted with both channels. Why don’t you watch Ryan talk about how much better the m8’s handle. His only gripe is about stunting them. He’s said multiple times that they feel more planted and handle way better actually getting up to speed. He keeps buying and building one after another cause he actually likes them. Connor has said several times how happy he is with his m8 as well and how much of an upgrade it was from the dyna. He’s talked about it on his Instagram story dozens of times. And you’re acting like I’ve only done a chain kit to my bike. If you actually look at my channel I’ve done a decent amount of work on my low rider s.
Love the video! Thanks
Thank you man!!!
My belt broke at 32k. Chain conversation coming
Hell yeah! Chains are the best!
Did you re-install the stock bet gaurds after installing the chain?
Nope. Can’t have it with my rwd rs1 shock. I took it off with the install for that
The plates fell and now I’m overthinking the order. Any videos that you’ve seen that show the plate order?
Not to my knowledge and it’s been too long for me to recall. Sorry man
you dont need chain on Harleys only when you bump up the torque to 130 FtLbs then consider chain replacement
I never said you needed one. There’s tons of reasons to swap to the chain as I mentioned in the video
why you went with a 53 instead of a 51?
The main reason I went with the 53 was because it was right in the middle of all of my options. I was debating on leaving it close to the stock gearing or not but I felt like having a little bit of that extra torque would be enjoyable for me. And I did not want to go to high because I did not want to take away too much from my TopSpeed and abuse my motor with high rpm. I think the 53 is pretty perfect after writing it for a decent amount today as well as the first day I had it. Perfect balance of both worlds
Jim’s tool says it’s unavailable on Amazon..what would be a good alternative?
For the main shaft nut? Or for chain alignment
@@RidinDad I am trying to find this as well...for the mainshaft nut. Everywhere I look they only carry it for Twin Cams. As long as I get one for a 2006+ TC should it even matter since that is when the TC got the six speed?
I believe the bolt would be different. The inner shaft threading or diameter might be different too. You’ll have to get one specific for the m8’s
Have you done any engine work or is it stock
As of right now I have a cam
Didn’t have a cam as of the chain install. Got it done after
dont use a impact on the comp bolt. it can damage the stator.
That’s true. It technically can. However I’ve used an impact on 4 different bikes there now and have had no issue. One bike I did 3 different times
ya never heard of it actually happening but HD says it can. I mentioned it because it would suck for someone watching to break theirs. just need a 3 ft braker bar and push down. Body weight helps. @@RidinDad
True
Is it possible to convert chain drive and still keep the belt guard?
Yes. I know several guys who did that
@@RidinDad thank you.
No problem
And where did you get it and what did it cost
The link is directly in the description of the bio. If you click it it'll take you straight to the product. I got it duringa sale so it was significantly less money than now but its from Speed Kings
How long did it take to do?
Hard to say cause it takes me longer with filing and stuff. Start to finish it’s probably a 2-3 hour job not including time to let oil drain
@@RidinDad just trying to get an idea of how many hours the mechanic to my fxbb is going to get me for...and he's a mechanic...
Yeah I hear ya man. Too much, that’s for sure
does the spacer need to be exact size or you can play with front sprocket
Spacer may have some play either less or more. Very small amount. You need clearance on both sides for the chain. Very narrow space for it not to rub on anything. And the spacers need to be the same for front and rear sprocket otherwise the chain won’t track straight and you’ll have so many issues. Why would you even want to play with the spacers?
@@RidinDad im not playing with them. i was wondering what size i should order. but someonetold me that i need 7/8 inner spacer for dyna 2015. thanks man
for a specific sproket 👍
Gotchya. Good luck with the install!
What brand this chains kit. Also how many tooth
Explained it all in the video. Did you even watch or just comment on the video within the first 2 seconds?
why would you want to remeove the chain wax from the chain?
You have to complete basic routine maintenance on the chain. Every so often you have to clean all the dirty wax and crap off of it and re apply
@@RidinDad i understand that but its a brand new chain. was wondering why you would want to take the wax off that came on it and re apply different wax.. ive always left the wax they come with on until its time to clean the chain so i was curious
There was so much. My bike would have been absolutely covered in it. There’s was probably 15x the amount you would want
Why not
You mean softail lowrider S. Some might be confused with the real lowrider S
You wanna compare the two? This “fake” low rider s will put ride the dyna any day. I love dynas, don’t get me wrong , but they don’t compare the m8’s
😂🤣
How many links was the chain you used?
They’re 120 link chains but several were obviously cut to fit. I do not know exactly how many total is on it currently
Appreciate the response I just ordered my chain today and wanted to be sure!
Nice!!!
What size is the clutch hub nut?
If I didn’t say it in the video I can’t help you unfortunately. Sorry man, I don’t remember what it is off hand. I thought I said it though. 11/16 sounds familiar?
I went chain drive years ago on my electra glide , belts are garbage , weak , expensive and labor intensive , much less reliable , I've went through 3 of them and left me stranded 2000 miles from home .
Oh damn that’s crazy. I’ve never heard of a belt wearing out like that. That sucks :/. It’s a nightmare to replace them too!!!!
@@RidinDad My ultra spit out 2 belts , dyna lowrider snapped 2 of them , I have no luck with belt drive
You really don’t man :/. Chain is king!!!
That's not a low rider, that's harleys abomination of a low rider in a softail. Should call it a foe slider.
😂 ok buddy. So you disagree with almost every other custom shop and performance manufacturer who loves the m8 platform.
Have you ridden an m8? They handle a million times better than the dyna platform
And you never answered my question if you rode one or not. So I’m going to assume that’s a no? I’ve owned a dyna so it’s not like I’m making crap up. The m8’s handle way better. And 90% of the guys that owned a dyna did a bunch of work to them too.
@@RidinDad that still doesn't make up the excuse to call those softails a Dyna name
To much useless yapping
I’m sure if I go to your page you have much better videos. And regardless, at least I know the difference between too and to.
What size spacer is that between the wheel and sprocket
I have no idea man. It’s an all inclusive kit. I don’t know the width of any one piece
