Harley's implementation of ABS especially in the mobility tricycle has had issues since day one. As far as I know, it's not just those two model years. The motorcycles with ABS that started being installed around 2015 also have some issues but none that cause one wheel to lock up as far as I know. This is one more nail in H-D's coffin. They are very actively trying to go out of business.

Harley riders sure as hell don't. The death rate for Harleys have always been twice what they are for real motorcycles, and they are the most ridiculously engineered vehicle you can still buy, as they have always been. Trikes and especially 2 wheeled motorcycles and scooters DO in fact run off the road on a regular basis. In fact, it is the most common motorcycle crash that involves just the rider. There are 100's of ''failure to negotiate a curve'' crashes here on youtube. In all cases the reason is rider error as in, target fixation, too much speed for the riders skill level, inability to counter steer with 2 wheeled vehicles, etc.. Whether there's a problem with H.D. trikes, I can't say. Experimentation will be needed that shows evidence of a defect. ''My trike ran off the curve'' is not evidence.
I wouldn't be caught dead on a tricycle but from what I've seen so far (we had a similar fatal incident here in Oregon) these trikes are not just "running off the road". As I understand it, one wheel locks up unexpectedly and apparently without any input from the rider and the trike does a hard left or right rudder.... basically becomes a tractor with one of the treads locked. There is a well known problem with H-D ABS systems that seems to be much worse on trikes. Blaming the operator in this situation while refusing to fix the problem is a fool's game. The longer H-D ignores this, the more bodies that will pile up. Remember the Audi flaw that caused the accelerator to redline with no input from the driver and the car would crash through the garage wall? Several drivers broke bones in their foot pushing the brake pedal as hard as they could and the car just wouldn't stop. Audi finally found out the cause and wound up shelling out millions. So the MoCo can fix the $10 part that's causing this and do an immediate recall or they can pay millions in civil court. If it were me, I'd be demanding a refund. No way I'd be riding a death trap like that.
That is clearly a CanAm Ryker in the graphic for this story. I've only had a CanAm feeling that they were actually safer. Please don't lump us in with Harley's mistakes. Can another lawsuit be coming soon? The TV station may want to modify their graphic & make a correction on air.
I am with you on this. It was very poor reporting for them to place an image of another manufacturers 3 wheel in place of the image of the Harley Davidson. What's the matter you couldn't get HD permission to display their image!?

Harleys were already obsolete on the drawing board, not far back, around when that old fart Diapered Donald's clan of 'Drumpfs" immigrated to our country. The Wright Brothers built the first inline-four motor over a decade before, that still rules the roads as they have since Honda built the first modern street bikes, with awesome Inline-fours in the 1960s. Learning facts about something you like can be hard. I always sympathize with Harley riders with bikes shaken to death on the roadside, or crashed because they dragged the clutch cover or fairy-foot floorboards. It's rough, like learning the truth about that incontinent criminal Traitor Trump!
Yup, two years ago here in Austin Texas on I-35 going south bound, I saw a Harley Davidson Trike crash to the left side of the rood and hit the barrier. The man riding the Trike was lucky to survive. I personally ride motorcycles, but I don't think I'll never ride a Trike, they remained me of the Three Wheeler Hondas from the late 1970's and 1980's, many people got hurt and died by those Honda Three Wheelers.
I rode an ATC 90 for many years. Like anything, boat, airplane, automobile, snowmobile. You have to ride within the vehicles capabilities & within your own skill level. Going over backwards as they were easy to do wheelies on. Had to be careful and know how to go up steep hills safely. Like any motor vehicle. It is up to the driver to drive it in a safe manner.
One has to question the validity of the reporting if the station graphics department can't even find a picture of a Harley Trike to put on the giant screen behind the reporters. That's a Can-Am Spyder up there. This is why I DO NOT trust broadcast news. If a story isn't written down, it's too fleeting to be worth watching.
The Two Wheels up front configuration of the Can Am is a far superior design. Massive safety features and a lot of weight up front. Riding a RTL, I ran into a squall when rounding a corner on a mountain road outside of Jackson Hole. 60 + mph winds with higher gusts, riding 2up. It threw me, 6’1” 245#, off to the mountainside of the road, my left boot heel somehow grabbed something preventing a full dismount. My wife was fine due to the pillion seating compartment with grips, armrests, etc. I quickly turned around in an attempt to outrun the storm. So, did all the other vehicle traffic that was surprised by the violent storm. racing away uphill through several inch flood water with maybe 75 feet visibility, 45-50 mph, flashers blaring, hoping we could keep from being rear ended. 23 miles later we found shelter to wait it out. Other than a “cage vehicle” I can’t think of any vehicle that we would’ve survived that. Two months later, riding solo in the mountains in Colorado, I experienced a derecho. Similar weather conditions plus hail. Thank God I was on my Can Am.
The only thing the flashers do in those weather conditions is blind the hell out of the driver behind . Please stop using the flashers incorrectly . If I was a cop that would be my big ticket offense
We had a TriGlidge for several years, was all good, sold it to a friend when my wife decided not to ride anymore. As for ABS brakes ... they're for new riders, there should be a switch to shut them off if you want, like on my adventure bike. I have more control with the ABS shut off. I have had my Harley bagger rear brake over heat and stop working... that was tense.
My concern with this news report here in the video is that the actual video on TH-cam first has a picture of a Can-Am Riker and then goes on to talk about the Harley-Davidson trike issue. I think it’s important that picture of the Can-Am Riker be eliminated and taken off of there because it provides miss information on Can-Am. It is not the Can-Am three wheelers like the spider the Ryker or the F3 that are the issue here.
I’ve seen loads of these and they seem to do well in all kinds of road conditions. Trikes demand a different mind set going into a corner but it’s hardly rocket science. A bad traction control system should be non intrusive. It controls the brakes and if it gets it wrong it’s right there at the heart of control.
The problem is if the rider is forced to turn sharp to prevent getting hit or run over. Ill take 2 wheels any day. I had a ATC back in the day and so did my wife’s family….
I hope I can find another video about this situation that I can take seriously. After the beginning, I don’t believe anything else in the video after that. This is the worst investigative reporting I’ve seen attempted.
Geez if you are gonna do a report put the RIGHT EFFING BIKE UP!! And a 3 wheeler handles way different than 2 wheels! There's a learning curve & most wrecks are from going too fast, & improper breaking. They don't corner like 2 wheels!
You have the wrong trike in the graphic, I-diot Team 4. Otherwise interesting... I bet you do some great fact-free stories on scary black rifles too. I've owned Harleys for decades and from many dealers and one of the prime truths of their corporate vision is...we got your cash and you're on your own unless you want to give us more. I go to Harley dealers with the same trepidation as going to the dentist for a difficult root canal. It's gonna hurt bad and will cost me more money than it should. So I do most of the work myself. The only cash flow they want from you is whatever they hoover out of your pockets. They will pretzel twist to weasel out of culpability for this and only when backed into a courtroom corner will they very reluctantly fork it over, with no admission of guilt whatsoever. They'll do all they can to blame the riders for these brake failures. I've owned Harley Trikes and 2-wheelers. My current trike is 11yo so the brakes are all old school hydraulics. No ABS. Little danger of them locking up by themselves, but I'm sure they're capable of it. The only braking guarantee is that a freight train will stop faster. The suspension on mine is modded to take corners better but the vehicle geometry ensures it will never keep up with 2-wheelers aggressively taking tight curves. Just gotta know your Harley's limitations and they are legion. Essentially sketchy 70s engineering on a dated platform with updated tech, material and glitzy electronic ornamentation. Makes no sense to own one...but I Iove them so.
ANYONE that rode a Tricycle as a small kid. KNOWS that a Trike of ANY SORT, SIZE, STYLE is the Least safe wheeled object on Earth. If as an adult you wreck on a trike from flipping it over on ANY corner/turn you deserve what you get. The science of a Trike goes back to Childhood.
True what you said BUT if the brakes aren't up to the job and lock on ? Whatever? Then the riding a three wheeler goes out the window . I personally hate trikes . To the point if I can't ride on twos then I'm hanging it up .
I'm 75 and on two wheels, if my wife doesn't want to ride with me she can stay home and I will enjoy the ride even more. No one tells me what to buy or ride!
I agree , the photo shown is a Can-am , which having 2 front wheels is better stabilized while riding and turning corners . Turn a corner on a 3 wheeler Harley and you may end up getting tossed off !
LOL... so the news cannot find a photo of a HD Trike so they use a Can-Am Ryker more fake or misleading photos from the lamestream media... I've owned Can-Am Ryker's and Spyder's and have never had an issue with braking or breaking I guess that says Canadians know how to put together a trike better than HD. Don't get me wrong I road a HD FLHS as my first bike for years before going and getting my Japanese Baggers which never breakdown.
If I was BRP I'd sue this TV station for false representation. They are doing a story on Harley-Davidson trikes, yt they are using a photo of a Can Am Ryker. That's messed up.
It's crazy that they use an image of a safer 3 wheel vehicle and then proceed to talk about Harley Davidson's ejection seat labeled as a trike. The U.S. outlawed 3 wheel ATVs in 1988 because they knew of their inherent danger because of handling problems and risk of ejection type crashes. If you crash a trike going forward, you will most likely be high-sided and thrown far from the vehicle. CAN-AM Ryker or similar vehicles that have the one wheel in back configuration, do not have this issue.
First off as usual with so called mainstream media “news” they do not know what they are talking about, they say Harley Davidson but clearly show a Can Am. Secondly, riding a trike is of course different than a bike, you must take your turns slower. I’m guessing people with little to none riding experience are buying trikes and riding past their capabilities.
Thinking a tryke is safer is a misconception . Yes they are easy to ride but they must be used at a slower pace as motorcycles. Dont try to push them too hard or they can mess you up .
I have a 17 freewheeler. Love it. yeah its different, you do a push and pull on it but it isnt any problem. Yeah you dont get stupid around curves, you use common sense. This is fear mongering. I advocate trikes, if you want one get one. Practice with it for a few days, you will get the hang of it. Ive never had any issues with my freewheeler.
I’m far from a mechanic but wouldn’t any wrecked vehicle that’s pretty tore up read codes that possibly might not have been there prior to being tore up? Do they store dates when the code first popped up?
Some say the rear axle bearings fail or bind up. I had the trike for two years and it takes a lot of upper body work to control it . Got tired and sold it for a road king.
Steve K - 1) credibility of the researchers is at questions based on a Can Am Graphic and "break" spelling of brake. 2) Its really difficult to determine if its the bike, or if its rider error (say one wheel was on dirt/stones/grease). 3) Its not fair to take fail codes off a un-repaired motorcycle which is what they appear to be doing. A bike beat up like that is going to throw LOTS of error codes.
You should not have Can-Am as your background. Can-Am is completly different technology, nothing like the trikes you talk about. It is misleading people and it has negative effect on Can-Am brand.
Of course one does have to ask why you would do a story about faulty Harley operations and show pictures of a Can-Am three-wheel motorcycle...and it matters because the engineering behind an HD trike and a Can-Am trike are VERY different! All three-wheel motorcycles are not created equal
I'm still waiting on my trike recall kit to be delivered to HARLEY DAVIDSON for my 2019 FREEWHEELER but they say its for the brake light recall that has been reported as staying on
On a vehicle as unstable as a trike. I've ridden work pedal tricycles, and they turn horribly. Why would they give each wheel an individual brake? Why would they not use a single brake for the rear axle? It would be more than enough stopping power, and increase stability when engaging the rear brake... Am I wrong?
Trikes act way different than motorcycles and sometimes people instinctively react as though they're on a two-wheeled vehicle and this can throw you all over the road on a three-wheel vehicle you literally have to drive a three-wheeler
Trikes are dangerous in general they don’t handle like a regular vehicle. Imo they shouldn’t even make them the drivers need to have fast reflexes, know what to do if you loose control really a level that a racer is at but most people driving them have trouble driving a 2 wheeler. I’m not blaming the drivers I feel very bad for the people injured or killed I’m just saying they are dangerous! They also shouldn’t Have put abs brakes on a 3 wheeler of anything
I'm not saying that there isn't possibly a problem with the new trikes and their brake or handling systems. However, I ride a 1957 Harley Servi-car trike, and I ride a 2018 Ural sidecar rig. When you go from 2 to 3 wheels, you have to relearn your riding skills because they do not handle like a two-wheel motorcycle.
Well, I'm glad I ride a Can-Am Spyder. I have no worries at all. I have a 2009 Can-Am Spyder and rode 1100 miles just last month with my wife. I can even ride at 105 mph without any wobbling or swaying. I bet you can't do that on a Harley Davidson trike. This News station should have used a Harley instead of a Ryker though.
You are a great example of why I would hate to have a jury trial. By all means don't let the facts interfere with your expert opinions. We have ten seconds so spare. Why don't you tell us all everything you know about Harley's implementation of ABS technology on trikes.
A bad ABS module can behave erratically, making your brakes lock up even under normal braking. You might even notice unusual behavior from the brakes, like random clicking noises. These can also indicate ABS module failure. The most common ABS problems occur when sensors become contaminated with debris or metal shavings. Malfunctions also occur when sensor wiring becomes damaged, resulting in intermittent or no continuity. Hopefully you can read that in ten seconds…. Wtf does 10seconds have any to do with any of this? Plus a jury? Are you against the rule of law and justice? Please reference my sad life statement again! Have a great day!
Yes Harleys are dangerous which is why we show a Can Am Spyder in the background🤦♂️🤦♂️. The Trike is fine to ride as long as you’re not acting the fool, and realize what you have under you. Get your brakes checked
Riding trikes for 30 years, never had a issue. Those crashes reported are rider error, lack of maintenance, improper maintenance, inexperience..... not Harley's fault.
Not sure about the reason but, if they are using “drive by wire” where there isn’t actually a “rider controlled” braking system, I’d say that is definitely or could be a problem. I want actual cables controlling the brakes where I can control the amount of pressure applied not some computer.
They need to correct this report that is a CAN AM RYKER not a Harley trike, although they do show Harley’s the rest of the time and then a RYKER at the end again????
Any company that doesn't immediately recall a serious issue or stand behind the consumer should be avoided. I don't care who they are. This lack of reaction by HD is damning.
They are very responsive in handling... Great straight line but they are a beast in the curves!! Better have upper body strength!!! Hated my TG when I first got it...Nothing like two wheels..Now I love it!!
The Harley trike is almost as old as Harley itself, People don't understand this type of trike is inherently dangerous and has always been that. Was used by the police and military since WWII for sure. It's not a 2 wheeler and can't be ridden like one.
Just wondering. Could it be that the rider, being very experienced with two wheelers, unconsciously counter steers setting the bike off in the wrong direction?
if your talking about a Harley Davidson then why are you showing a can-am that looks nothing like a Harley?
because the media is stupid. But people still believe what they say.

This is the worst investigative reporting I’ve seen attempted.
and thats a Ryker made by Canam
Yes, centrifical force is a bitch, a motorcycle leans into the force, helping you stay on, a trike flat turns
Why do you have a can am bike in the picture and your talking about Harley Davidson.
If I were Can-Am , you guys would be in serious legal trouble. Who was responsible for researching the image, write them up!
As the saying goes: “The only possible product that Harley Davidson could make that DOESN’T SUCK would be a vacuum cleaner”!
Geez if you are gonna do a report put the RIGHT EFFING BIKE UP!! And a 3 wheeler handles way different than 2 wheels! There's a learning curve & most wrecks are from going too fast, & improper breaking. They don't corner like 2 wheels!
You mean these people never wrote a tricycle as a child? If they had they would know that they topple over sideways.
Surprised they didn't get sued by BRP/Can-Am. Harley Tri-glide is nothing like a reverse trike.
WHY SHOW A CAN-AM RYKER...CAN AMS HAVE NO PROBLEMS
ANYONE that rode a Tricycle as a small kid. KNOWS that a Trike of ANY SORT, SIZE, STYLE is the Least safe wheeled object on Earth. If as an adult you wreck on a trike from flipping it over on ANY corner/turn you deserve what you get. The science of a Trike goes back to Childhood.
Heavy is more danger. It feel safe but when it go out of control it`s unstoppable.
True what you said BUT if the brakes aren't up to the job and lock on ? Whatever? Then the riding a three wheeler goes out the window . I personally hate trikes . To the point if I can't ride on twos then I'm hanging it up .
That's exactly why the 3 wheeled atv was band in America.
You are correct
I'm 75 and on two wheels, if my wife doesn't want to ride with me she can stay home and I will enjoy the ride even more. No one tells me what to buy or ride!
Get a Ducati no Vespa or Harley man up
I think that last line was what she said.
I agree , the photo shown is a Can-am , which having 2 front wheels is better stabilized while riding and turning corners . Turn a corner on a 3 wheeler Harley and you may end up getting tossed off !
CanAm, not Harley, in the back drop of the initial reporting.
LOL... so the news cannot find a photo of a HD Trike so they use a Can-Am Ryker more fake or misleading photos from the lamestream media...
I have the 2017 as well. Love riding it.
Stupid computer brakes
You should not have Can-Am as your background. Can-Am is completly different technology, nothing like the trikes you talk about. It is misleading people and it has negative effect on Can-Am brand.
Of course one does have to ask why you would do a story about faulty Harley operations and show pictures of a Can-Am three-wheel motorcycle...and it matters because the engineering behind an HD trike and a Can-Am trike are VERY different! All three-wheel motorcycles are not created equal
Rider error, that simple. Another lawyer chasing a $$$. (In my opinion). lol
That picture in the background made the anchors look ignorant about their knowledge in the news they were reporting.
I'm still waiting on my trike recall kit to be delivered to HARLEY DAVIDSON for my 2019 FREEWHEELER but they say its for the brake light recall that has been reported as staying on
A Canam is not a Harley, get your research correct.
On a vehicle as unstable as a trike. I've ridden work pedal tricycles, and they turn horribly. Why would they give each wheel an individual brake? Why would they not use a single brake for the rear axle? It would be more than enough stopping power, and increase stability when engaging the rear brake... Am I wrong?
Never once had a issue on mine with 43K now
Got a 16 freewheeler, still riding it.
They are showing a picture of a Can Am Spyder why?
Tv shows bike not related to harley at all on their backdrop
I have been riding for 46 years and I have no use for anti-lock brakes on a bike. My 2016 road king has that feature and it makes me nervous.
Trikes act way different than motorcycles and sometimes people instinctively react as though they're on a two-wheeled vehicle and this can throw you all over the road on a three-wheel vehicle you literally have to drive a three-wheeler
How in the hell can we out any credibility in their story if they are talking Harley Davidson and showing a CanAm trike. Typical journalism bullshit.
I have a 2022 and still have brake problems and I have not gotten any thing from Harley about a recall
🤣 I wish I didn't see this, I'm going tomorrow to look at a freewheeler
Why the wrong photo behind the news caster
God bless you Mr Harold & miss Laura.
Harold crashed his trike after knowing it had defective brakes and killed his woman Now he's suing, so much for American motorcycles
Tragic, my condolences.
how come they show a CAM AM in the news studio
hot dog riders ?......I have a trike....very safe, learn how to ride it
Well, I'm glad I ride a Can-Am Spyder.
You would lose that bet, I put over 19k miles on my trike last year with multiple times over 100 on it and it was stable as can be.
The problem I’m seeing is the way these riders are projecting their errors on the manufacture!
You are a great example of why I would hate to have a jury trial. By all means don't let the facts interfere with your expert opinions. We have ten seconds so spare. Why don't you tell us all everything you know about Harley's implementation of ABS technology on trikes.
@@franksaxton3583 awe are you mad someone holds a differing opinion!! What a sad little life, reading comments from a year ago! God Bless!
Someone should tell that cupcake that is not a picture of a Harley trike.
Yes Harleys are dangerous which is why we show a Can Am Spyder in the background🤦♂️🤦♂️. The Trike is fine to ride as long as you’re not acting the fool, and realize what you have under you. Get your brakes checked
3 Wheeler atvs were outlawed 20 years ago. Accidents usually due to operator error.
The video has been removed from the station's website because of the screw up.
Riding trikes for 30 years, never had a issue. Those crashes reported are rider error, lack of maintenance, improper maintenance, inexperience..... not Harley's fault.
Computer error!
Its "BRAKE" not "BREAK"
Why don’t you show a HD in the picture? How ignorant do you think we are
That picture is of a Ryker, NOT a Harley. MSM at it again!!
The picture is a can am spider, not a trike, lol
Not sure about the reason but, if they are using “drive by wire” where there isn’t actually a “rider controlled” braking system, I’d say that is definitely or could be a problem.
I want actual cables controlling the brakes where I can control the amount of pressure applied not some computer.
They need to correct this report that is a CAN AM RYKER not a Harley trike, although they do show Harley’s the rest of the time and then a RYKER at the end again????
Harley has always used their riders as their R&D dept
Reverse trike is much more stable. A regular trike is not.
why are they showing a can am ryker? NOT A HARLEY, DUH!
Why the can am? This must be the “Eye missed it news report”
Why are they showing a Can Am Ryker they are nothing like the Harley's
Go Can Am Spyder, and be safe!
Why do they have a picture of a Can Am Ryker? A Ryker is not a trike. It is a roadster.
Showed the wrong pic...in the beginning...
Driver error...those things are dangerous...
Two wheels make a motorcycle
Three wheels
Make A tricycle!
Why show a Can Am Ryker?
What a joke. And what were the riders doing at the time of the crash. Playing grab ass! My wife and I each have one and never rode safer
2018. In 2yrs. 19000. Mile. Highway. Smoth. Ride
Just wondering. Could it be that the rider, being very experienced with two wheelers, unconsciously counter steers setting the bike off in the wrong direction?
