Kolkata Loreto, how would you feel if someone called you Low-reto? Can English appropriate merit?NTT

Loreto College in Kolkata was caught in a controversy, that eventually compelled the institution to issue public apology to 'people of Bengal". The college had issued a circular for aspirants this year, seeking to take admission in there but with a clause. The notice unambiguously stated that students hailing from a vernacular background will not be considered for admission. As stated by the institution, affluence in English is a must to be able to follow and keep up with the lessons being taught in the college. The notice was unequivocally condemned by the student community, ex-students, various sections of the educated intelligentsia & civil society. University of Calcutta cracked down upon Loreto, and the beleaguered institution eventually withdrew the notice. Thee problem here is not just limited to the proceedings of the admission process of an institution. It's the driving force behind it, the very mindset of the society that revels in a colonial hangover, that has set English as the yardstick for acceptance. Team NTT questions this mindset and asks if English can or should appropriate someone's merit.

This is definitely 'colonial hangover'.
And not just Loreto, most of the convent schools/colleges has this tendency of shaping minds in such a way that we start considering 'fluency in English' to be the only parameter to judge someone's personality or ability. However, as we grow up we understand how knowledge is not bound to any particular language. English can be one of the mediums not the only parameter of education. Anyway, thank you for this video. Here's hoping parents/schools/young minds are able to understand this difference and we gradually get rid of this 'colonial hangover'.

To the people who are against the English language ....peace,go your way.
Same people run to a specialist when in dire straits in regards to health ...so why can't certain institutes specialize in a language ?

Seems like certain institutions and organisations are still following the Macaulay's minutes of 1835 which made English as the sole medium of instruction and communication for the state. English speaking is a skill but not an identity of an individual. Language provides capability to a person to express himself or herself to the other. But making a certain language as a tool to filter out candidates in a revered institution like Loreto or any other for that matter is brazen and shall be called out in all quarters.

Can not agree more on this. Just want to add that all these statements hold good for Hindi as well. Lately, we have seen huge push from Central Govt to uplift and promote Hindi even at the cost of other languages.

They're just saying out loud what is practiced in other institutions where English is the medium of instruction -which is to say most 'reputed' institutions. Fellow students from Hindi and Marathi backgrounds were on their own in a manner because they were directed towards material but it wasn't really handed to them the way it was English speaking students. I think institutes should take into account these factors and at the very least provide notes and presentations in Hindi and whatever the State language is. That should be made mandatory, especially in specialised courses where these students will go on to work in impactful areas like medicine, social work etc.

In my city .. they're the one who have really mastered good command over English language tho and english is just a language..but it's good to learn English because it's a global language..and will make life easier in many ways...even academic books in english are best understood...govt should try to promote Hindi also tho..but make sure every school teaches English so that students don't have problem in future...or apply a Russia / china one language style but in a democratic country that would be difficult
