    A little background .. I took a turning class last year and the instructor was exceptionally good. However I was called away an hour before class was done to respond to a flood in my town. After 20 hours and 63 rescues later I made it back to my shop and found every tool was underwater and the building had to be torn down. I’ve since rebuilt in higher location but the knowledge didn’t stay with me from the class. I want to thank you for what you have done here. For without your videos I probably wouldn’t be able to start turning. Your style is perfect and it has made a difference in my life thanks .

    That is just the right information and the camera angle really helped, I had the situation where every time I engaged the gouge it started to skip backwards at me, spiraling a big nasty cut into my piece and scaring the life out of me. I think I need to take some blanks and just turn them into shavings...

    I have been turning for about a year having learned from a book and my limited experience at school 60 years ago. I learned to ride the bevel for spindles and skews but sort of learned it for bowls. This was a revelation to me that I had almost been doing it right. Practiced today hollowing a bowl and wonders - it worked. All those snatches gone. Never too old to learn, this old dog can learn new tricks.

    Very informative! I have a bowl gouge and made a platter/bowl out of some 8/4 maple. I had trouble getting it to cut smoothly. I think it was a combination of needing to sharpen, and bad technique. I mostly turn pens so didn’t have the correct techniques for a bowl gouge. Once it’s warm again, I’ll get back out there and try to make a bowl now that I know how to properly “ride the bevel”. Your videos are awesome btw!

    By the way, I love your vidéos, very well explained and clear.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OK, while I have not done this myself, you can turn from the opposite side of the lathe. BUT, (there's always a but) you MUST be sure to use a faceplate or chuck with a set screw in the headstock collar. Some don't have set-screws - don't use those. You will need to attach the chuck and then on the chuck collar there needs to be a set screw you will tighten into the headstock spindle. This MUST be done because turning in reverse will unscrew the chucks and faceplates. Other than that you should be good to go and can turn in reverse mode on the opposite side of the lathe. All the best to you! Happy Turning!

    Another perfectly explained video. Would you please give some guidance as to the importance of the height of the tool rest. I’m never quite sure if I’ve got it right. Thanks

    Hey could you share how you created that bevel. Mine gouge is sharpened more like a pencil. Yours is very flat.

    Very helpful, I'm a beginner who knows he has to eventually get off the carbide and learn the gouge. Question: does it make sense to to invest in a decent gouge if I can only sharpen on a common cheapo bench grinder? Should I wait till I have a whet grinder? Sharpening is a world I wish I knew better.

    I have had my lathe for 3 months and my mentor told me ALWAYs ride the bevil. NOW, thanks to you , I know what the hxxx the bevel is and how to present it to the wood.

      Good to hear, Gerald! Yeah, it can be hard to understand, especially if people say it like everyone is supposed to already know what they mean. "Just ride the bevel." LOL All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    Garry not Linda. I'm new to your channel so bear with me. One point that wasn't covered was tool rest placement and height adjustment for best cut. I've watched a lot of turning videos, I'm still new at it. For every five videos there are seven ways to set the tool rest. This video covers roughing in a blank. I've seen guys lower the rest and drop the handle way down. Others place the rest on center. What is a good rule of thumb for a newbie to start with to build experience. Let me put it this way, the bowl gouge and I are not friends right now.

      Hey, Garry (not Linda),
      Welcome!
      You bring up a good point. However, I'm also trying to not cram every topic into one video like is often done. I do have other videos that cover your question. Check out my Tool Rest video - th-cam.com/video/9Ew0Xj8hTaw/w-d-xo.html and watch my Bowl Gouge Beginner Guide video - th-cam.com/video/txMcZ4yFOfA/w-d-xo.html That video will help spell out many details for you. Let me know what you think.
      Happy Turning,
      Kent

    Thank you, great video and accompanying piece on your web site. I finally know what the bevel actually is now. The bit about the bevel being a fence was excellent.

    G'day Kent. Thanks for this video teaching about riding the bevel. now I know why I get lots of lines and how to correct this. I have recently bought 2 bowl gouges and have bought a tormek sharpening center which is near the lathe. I am so glad I bought a cover for it as I get shavings all over it. It has a water cooled stone and also I am learning how to use it too, also I now know why they put a packet of band aids in the parcel when it comes. I learned to never touch the blades just after sharpening. You are a fantastic teacher of this craft and I appreciate what you are doing very much. I hope you do well with your channel and I wish you all the very best possible with it.

    Kent, I have never done any wood turning but have now ordered a lathe etc. There are no clubs near me in England so I have been watching your videos. This one and the other about bevel angles have helped my understanding a lot. I am now not so nervous about trying for the first time. Many thanks, Jim.

    Brilliant video , probably the best camera angles I've seen to demonstrate this 👍, I'm struggling with bevel bounce through the cut and can't seem to shake it, Im led to believe this is pushing too hard into the wood ? I try to conciously put downward pressure into the tool rest and put light pressure up the length of the tool but still seem to get the bounce, any advice ?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you like this one. Yes, put more pressure down on the tool rest and open the flute a bit. Just let the cutting edge of the gouge "shave" the surface. See if that helps. Happy Turning!

    Kent, for some reason I don't have much problems with bowls, but spindle work is a mess. If I can make a 1" cut I am good, after that it seems like all I do is bounce. I have to start over for the next cut. I lose the bevel. Hopefully this will help me to watch the bevel more closely.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joesph, You're probably coming off the bevel when you start to feel the tool bounce. Try spreading your feet apart a bit and center up before you start. Don't move your feet, just bend your knees slightly and shift your upper body weight. See if that helps.

    I have been turning for exactly 23 days, watched a bunch of videos but this is the first time I heard this topic explained so well. I had actually become so frustrated that I put aside the bowl and spindle gouges and purchased carbide tool and they ain’t cheap. Thanks, I will watch for future videos
