    There are several things to consider when clearing the interior of a turned wood bowl. In this video we will cover many of the issues that cause the most frustration when turning the inside of a wooden bowl.

    I’ve only been turning for 3 months so although I have experienced all of the problems you stated ,the more times I watch your video the better the information sinks in.Because I do make at least 1 of these mistakes each time I turn a bowl on my midi lathe.

    Lathe videos love to talk about angles. Tool angles. They NEVER ever specify which of the three angles they're talking about. There are three: 1). The relationship between the tool and the floor - the handle up or down. 2). The lateral application to the work - the handle left or right. 3). The amount of cut at the tool point - the handle twist open or closed.
    It is a frequent cause for confusion

      @TurnAWoodBowl  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds good. Be careful with too much time between turning the outside and inside. If the wood is wet there will be a lot of stress that can appear as cracking on the end grain. Best to turn all in "one sitting." Happy Turning!

    Another great video. You do a great job explaining common mistakes. In the beginning, I would establish the rim thickness and work my way down the bowl. I usually ended up getting thinner than I wanted down further. When I tried to thin the rim back to the same thickness as the lower part it was either thinner than I wanted or I would get a lot of vibrations and have chatter marks I needed to sand out. This video would have saved me a lot of aggravation. Keep up the great work. :)

    Oh how WONDERFUL. Kent provided a superb video here detailing some of the pitfalls to be avoided in bowl turning and from nowhere 6 have provided a "Thumbs down" for the vid.
    This obviously mean THEY are so much better than Kent at turning and are going to submit THEIR OWN video to us all...on how they believe it really should be done.
    I can't wait......I won't hold my breath though. Thanks for a very informative video AS ALWAYS.

    Another nice video - I'm 7 for 7 :) I've been doing my bowls with a 40/40 grind, so at some point I usually switch to a bottom of bowl gouge to come across the lower third or so. I can see the advantage of not needing two separate gouges though... Unrelated, I'm interested in the idea that you can use a jam chuck (bowl shape) to hold and work the outside of thin bowl walls. The walls don't even know they're thin!

      Sounds great, 7 for 7. Yes, the 55° swept-back is my fav tool. I like the 40/40 mainly for roughing the exterior of large blanks. Have you seen my jam chuck video. More details there for you. They work like a charm. Happy Turning!

    Great video. I have been turning for about 10 years and have always had trouble with the center and trying to get that smooth. I have tried getting it flat with a bowl gouge, a round no’s scraper, a bottom feeder gouge and even a square nose scraper and always seem to end up with a small nub of divot. It’s usually something small enough to where it can be sanded down to fit the curve of the rest of the bowl but just takes more sanding in that particular area. I am no pro turner by any means but a far amount of the tips that I see in various videos from different youturbers I already know or have seen but I still tend to learn a bit of something. Some of the tips in this video I already knew and have experience with but I did learn a lot about finishing the bottom. Thanks for your expertise.

    I have bought the carbide. Makes it so easy... but, because of your love for the swept back, and how you use it, it’s so versatile, i how bought it as well. Do you have a video on just this swept back. ?

    Very good Kent. I learned a lot. ‘Supported grain and tool supported on bevel’ 👍 ‘Rotational speed the same, but surface speed of the wood gets less, as you cut toward the centre’ 👍 Maybe I won’t get a tool catch next bowl! I haven’t been laying the gouge over anywhere near enough. 👍😅👏👏👏

    Thanks for the great video. I’m transitioning from carbide tools to bowl gouges (I’ve only turned a few bowls), and this was really helpful. In fact I had an issue with tool marks from a carbide tool in the inside bowl center and now I think I know why - slow down!

    Thank you for the video. I don't claim to be a wood turner, I make quaichs and have to turn bowls so as to have an item to carve, if that makes sense. You've sorted out a recurring, ie, every time I turn a bowl, problem of tool marks. much appreciated.

      Sounds great Richard! Hm? I just looked up your quaich. Are you turning everything except the negative space around the handles? It could be done that way, I think. Happy Turning!

    Kent, I am a novice turner in Sydney, Australia and having not turned a bowl since High School some 52 years ago I have viewed nearly all your videos and learning slowly. My major drama is forming a proper Mortise so that once turned around the wood stays in the chuck, I have had several fly off causing real dramas. After viewing your videos multiple times your instructions are really sinking in and making a huge difference in my work so a great thank you for your expertise.

    Your videos are the most helpful and well done of any I have seen! I watched a few then tried to watch one someone else produced and just couldn't finish it. You have excellent presentation skills. You describe things in a very easily understood manner and you never block the bowl with your body. Thanks for taking the time to answer so many of my questions. I will be taking your tool sharpening e course very soon.

    Thanks Kent. I really appreciate your teaching style. I have watched this video over and over again, along with your video on how to avoid catches and skips . . . And I’ve tried and tried to emulate your gouge positioning, but I still have two rough patches opposite each other on every bowl I turn. I’ve sharpened the gouge, kept the flute at 3 o’clock to start and opened it up to around 1.30 as I progress. I’ve tried the finishing cut with the flute more open and using the point of the gouge. I’ve tried that scraping cut using the wings of the gouge that you speak of in other videos. I just can’t seem to get rid of those two patches of grain standing up! I’ll carry on looking at your tips to see if I’m missing something. Please don’t stop doing what you do!

    Watch many times already and just realized from your close-up, I've been trying to duplicate the visual I see on video (most of the time is not the same as I truly will see while I'm turning) (130 degree position you're turning in will look different from an overhead view). Thank you again!

    Your tips about starting a cut on the rim of the interior are timely, thank you. And I just tried your technique of focusing on the outside of the bowl when cutting the interior., and I had a much better result. On a another topic, I notice what looks like netting hanging in front of your lathe. Is that to stop chips from flying throughout the shop? Does it also stop the water from green wood? (A particular problem in my tiny shop.) What is the material, and where can we buy it? As always, you did a terrific job with this video.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl

    Yes, these principles have been very helpful. In another video, you mention sharpening the bowl gouge before making finish cuts. Since doing this and following the other tips, my interior bowl cuts have improved a lot. Thanks for your clear and precise instruction. Two somewhat unrelated questions: 1. even though you have a micro bevel gouge, have you ever considered grinding the heal on your 55 swept back to reduce interference in the bottom corners? 2. How often do you replace your respirator filters? How do you know when you should replace them? thanks.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your kind words. 1) Yes, sometimes, I will grind back the heel of my regular gouges. 2) about every 6 months or when they start looking gross. ;) Happy Turning!

      Depends on the use for the bowl, and the wood, and your preferences.
