    Man, that "confession" was a masterpiece. I remember watching it the first time with a mixture of contempt for Walter and admiration for his craftiness.
    The best part of it? His bullshit version of the story would be somehow a lot more believable for a general audience than what actually happened in the show.

    15:31 - It's weird that "Heisenberg" is such a good liar (as we see in the confession tape) but "Walt" can't lie to save his life (when he tells Skyler about needing to look at the vending machine).

    • @sertu1462
      @sertu1462 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Interesting, I never noticed that.
      I think the reason for that is that if he lies to his family, they are more likely to notice it because they know Walt for such a long time. This is why the writers might have written the scenes in a way that makes those lies seem just as obvious to the viewers as it is to Skyler, for example.
      People like jesse or other business associates know Walt only for a short time and mostly know the fassade. Therefor, these lies are more subtle to people like Jesse, which might be why they are written in a more subtle way.
      So basically, it's not like his lies are more subtle when he's doing business, it's more so that the writers put us as the viewers in his "victims" shoes. At least that's my interpretation, it might be wrong.

      @@sertu1462 - I think you're right in noticing that usually (or all the time?) that we see Walt lying and it's obvious he isn't fooling anyone, it is when he is lying to Skyler. So, it could be the writers giving us Skyler's point of view. But I also think there is definite "Heisenberg" vs. "Walt" dichotomy that the show presents to us where, throughout the course of the show, we see Heisenberg do things that Walt would not be capable of.

    • @sertu1462
      @sertu1462 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@victorsixtythree I get your point, but I don't know if it makes sense to sperate Walt and Heisenberg as much as many people do when they talk about the show. Especially because the lines between Heisenberg and Walt get kind of blurry at times.
      Walter quitting his job at the car wash or refusing the money of Gretchen and Elliot shows that all of Walters confidence and ego was there way before he became a drug lord, long before the name Heisenberg even existed.
      He's always been Walter White. "Heisenberg is just his business name, but we see the behaviur he usually displays in the drug world in his private live and vise versa.

    • @victorsixtythree
      @victorsixtythree 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sertu1462 I think using the names "Heisenberg" and "Walt" is a convenience that people use and it is useful at times but certainly they are two aspects of the same person not two separate people. The Heisenberg persona wasn't created out of thin air when Walter started making meth. I think it was more that the latent Heisenberg personality that was buried was given a chance to come out. Actually, now that I think about it, this idea can be traced all the way back to the very end of the first episode when Walt and Skyler are in bed and Walt grabs her and she says, "Walt, is that YOU??" (And that ties in nicely to the idea that Skyler is the person who should know him best.)

    I've always loved your reactions and how emotionally attached you get to truly well-written characters that are allowed to live and be developed within truly well-written stories. So, needless to say I was beyond excited when you started reacting to this show. There were so many scenes that I wanted to see you react to but what I was looking forward to the most, since the day you posted the reaction to the very first episode of season one, was to eventually get to watch you absorb and deal with Ozymandias. Now that you've watched the episode I no longer have to refrain from naming it. (I absolutely hate comments like "I can't wait for this or that episode" cause, while technically spoiler-free, they only serve to build completely unnecessary expectations that might end up lessening the impact of said episode). Ozymandias is the best episode of any series, to me. This final half of the last season is why Breaking Bad went from being my favorite series of all time to being something I can't see ever being dethroned. (I'd be so happy to see something come along in the future that proves me wrong, though.)
    Walter White is easily my favorite character of all time and I love his entire character arc. I can't wait to see what you guys think of the way Vince Gilligan wrapped everything up. In case you haven't watched the final episode yet; have fun. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I almost expect to see you in the same clothes for the remaining episodes. I can't imagine having the episodes available and still be able to stop at this point. :)

    No way in hell is Skyler being manipulated anymore...she's past that. She's making her decisions wide-eyed. She was even the one who originally came up with the idea of telling a fake story to explain their money, and said she was considering crying a single tear as they told Hank and Marie about Walt's "gambling".
    Just a reminder:
    - Skyler figured out Walt was lying in the first episode.
    - By the end of season 2, Skyler threw every single one of Walt's lies back in his face and had the intelligence and composure to do her own investigating--and figured it all out other than Walt cooking meth.
    - In season 3, Skyler figured out Walt was selling drugs before Walt could admit it to her.
    - Skyler fucked Ted, and then told Walt to his face that she did.
    - Skyler came up with the gambling story on her own, and even wrote out a script for them to follow when it came to telling Hank.
    - When she realized how much money Walt was making, she started researching how to launder money.
    - Skyler came up with the idea of buying the car wash to use as a front for Walt's money coming in.
    - Skyler came up with the fake story about the water filtration system (or whatever) to force the car wash owner to sell, and orchestrated the con job on Bushy McEyebrows.
    - She agreed to be the "Danny" for Walt and make sure nobody would discover the tons of money coming in--Walt was even against her doing it, or doing anything in connection to his making meth, but she insisted.
    - She pulled a con job on the IRS guy as well, in order to make sure they didn't investigate ted's business too deeply (and thus, investigate her).
    - Once she realized Walt was telling the truth about being "out" of the meth-dealing bidniz, she practically punted Lydia half-way across New Mexico for daring to try and talk Walt into going back.
    - After Walt collapsed from burying the money, it was Skyler who suggested that their best course of action would be to just remain silent, as she didn't think Hank had any proof, just assumptions.
    Skyler has been an incredibly strong woman in this series. In season 5 , we do see her emotionally abused and manipulated with fear by Walt, and that was hard to stomach. But for most of the show's run, Skyler was hardly some confused woman having reality warped and distorted by Walt's manipulations. She caught damn near ALL that shit rather quickly and easily. the writers of Breaking Bad do an outstanding job of giving all the characters a ton of grey in terms of morality and ethics. And they show just how easy it can be to "break bad", as almost everyone in the show except Walt Jr, Brock, and Holly pretty much showed their sinful sides lol...

    no doubt walt manipulates people for his own benefit and yes hes played jesse alot of times. but u also gotta understand its not like everything he did was just for his own benefit. hes def not a good guy but at the very least u can tell he does care about jesse. if he didnt, he woulda ordered the hit on him already. or just left him to die back when they were working for fring. and ofc with hank too. he cant actually kill hank because he doesnt hav it in him to kill someone so close to him. he only made the tape to deter hank from trying to imprison them. he could easily ask saul to order a hit out on hank or jesse but he chose not to. that alone i feel goes to show that walt isnt a complete psychopath. and if anything jesse leaving town is actually the best idea for him. if he left, he couldve started a new life with 5 mil. instead, choosing to stay behind fks walt and himself over.

      Yeah, a lot of people for sure are going to take a moralistic approach and hop into the justice bandwagon as always, just like when pirates were hanged, women accused of witchcraft were burned and people are tormented in twitter, the justice bandwagon will have them cheer on, but to them I must say, this entire world was built by people like Walter White, everything you enjoy and consume, the privilege you take for granted, the safety that no one else in any other place has, don't play innocent and pretend you don't know where it all comes from, You know where it all comes from. I think Bronn from Game of Thrones said it best, the world is built by cutthroats until their grandchildren ruin everything with their cock sucking ways. Walter White could have left 80 millions dollars for his children after his cancer killed him and the family would all be alive and well afterwards had it not been for Hank. Now Hank is dead, and Marie has to be alone, but Walter's family is going to have millions either way despite the fact that they won't remember Walt fondly. The truth is, you are either a sheep or a wolf, and Walt finally chose to be a wolf till the end. He will be remembered as a powerful boss, instead of not being remembered at all. And I believe the reason so many people like Walt, is that they also have been victims to the same system that transforms everyone into sheep. They too feel the pain and desperation Walt felt. And we all loved to see Walt rise up and prove the world wrong. Don't you dare think the world will side with you when difficulties come up, it won't. You too will be on your own if things go south and your will see that being like Walter White will be the only thing that saves you. So yeah, I hate the way some people criticize Walt all of a sudden.

    I really believe that Walt does care about Jesse and I think that this episode shows off the genius of Bryan Cranston's acting. When he's lying he's usually very awkward as can be seen when he's lying to Skyler about the Coke machine to get the gun. However when he is telling Jesse that it might be best for him to leave town he is very genuine about it including the hug. Yes maybe ultimately it was for selfish reasons, but he doesn't want Jesse to be hurting either. There are instances thrown in throughout the series as well like when he says he's sorry about Jane when he's on the sleeping pills that Jesse slipped him in the lab and when he calls Walt Jr. Jesse when he's going to sleep after getting beat up.

    Dave Porter really doesn’t get enough credit for the music in both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul!

    Hate is so consuming Imon that she doesn't get that this show is shades of grey. When Walt hugged Jessie it was manipulation yes but it was also cause he wanted to comfort him. It was both! Always keep in mind that there's two beings in one body, Walt and Heisenberg.

      The most annoying thing about Walt fans is how they act like anytime Walt does something good, that was the true Walter White but whenever he does something evil it's not Walt doing it its Heisenberg. Zero culpability, like he is being held hostage in his own body to this evil "heisenberg" spirit that controls him.
