    Gus was not just smart, he was patient, he was calculated and he left emotion and pride out for most of the series, until he made a fatal mistake.

      Walt’s ego also helped him get as far as he did. He was motivated to win against Tuco and Mike because they bruised it. But without his ego he wouldn’t have even tried becoming a criminal. Someone as smart as Walter and more secure would have taken the job Elliot offered in Season 1, or even not walked away from Gretchen to begin with. Walt did because her family’s wealth threatened his ego. I think Mike and Saul were right, he was an incredible chemist but would have been caught in a few months without their help.

      Gus had no loyalty to anyone after his boyfriend died. That was his mistake. He thought Walt was smart enough to not have any loyalty and be driven by self interest.
      Walt was full of ego but he was also driven by loyalty to the few people he loved. However misguided.
      Gus thought Walt would just take it as he had. Walt would rather gamble and see what other cards he could play

    In any good characters, I always look to see if there are contradictions to them.

We knew he was scared of Lalo after seeing him grind his entire operation to a halt in order to ward against him, but it was always a calm, rational response to a greater threat, but in this scene the FEAR in Gus's face just says everything; he wasn't being rational or calculated, he was paranoid and threw all his defenses up because he knew Lalo was the better man, who in the end just got unlucky.

    What I found terrifying about Gus' character when first watching this show was how Giancarlo Esposito could alter his expression and mannerisms from being an amiable, unassuming fellow to an insensate drug lord. I think that is why his last moments with Don Hector is so memorable to me is because his last expression goes from a moment of tenderness, to bewilderment, and finally absolute terror. What a fantastic and original character, definitely up to Los Pollos standards.

    It's Gus. Sure in the end he was outwitted by Walt but, that ended up being Walt's undoing. It led to Walt poisoning Brock to get Jessie on his side which led to Hank using Jessie to bust Walt and the whole thing fell apart. However, Gus accomplished everything he wanted to in life: destroy the Salamancas and their whole cartel. Walt basically got everything he wanted to. He died 2 years after his diagnosis (as he originally planned to do) and managed to humiliate his old partners, get his money to his family, and kill all his enemies. Hell he probably could have gotten away in the end if he wanted to but, he had nothing left but a life on the run with a lung wound and no money. So he just accepted death. So if anything Gus and Walt would be tied in their master plan's efficacy.

    I like how gus essentially tried to save walter white by getting the two salamanca brothers to go after a Dea agent who could pose a threat for the cartels later on in the future
    essentially killing two birds with one stone, it means gus really wanted walter to keep living on even after his time was done either out of respect for his talent, or wanting to use him more I suppose
    but to guses suprise hank managed to survive and defeated the equivilent to two elite cartel hitmen, and in response to this walter wanted to know what was going on and gus simply told him without words "the problem has already been sorted you have nothing to worry about anymore", you can even tell since gus is saying this since he winks at walk confirming that basically the salamanca assasin issue is no longer a thing

    Gustavo Fring is truly one of the most calculated and intelligent characters ever to be in television. The man spent decades on a revenge mission and took time, planning and money to build his empire, the chief component being his meth lab that took extenuating circumstances, delays and millions of dollars to construct. He could’ve attacked the cartel at anytime once he consolidated his forces but he took the time and patience to gradually tear them down, specifically with the Salamancas. As Hank Schrader put it, Fring was one “magnificent bastard”

  • @harrisonmccartney4878
    @harrisonmccartney4878 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

    I like to think most of the main characters are highly intelligent, but they all have a character flaw that make them do unwise things. Walter is a chemistry genius, but his pride and ego make him act irrationally in spite of how smart he is otherwise. Mike is a brilliant tactician, but he has heart and mercy, which are good qualities in a man, but wind up being fatal in the business he's involved in. Gus is a highly intelligent businessman and negotiator, but his single-minded pursuit of vengeance at all costs leave him wide open to predictable behaviors that end up being his downfall. Hank is a very competent DEA agent, but his familiarity with the drug industry and the kinds of people he knows to be involved make him frequently rule out the possibility that his meek and mild-mannered brother-in-law Walt could ever manage to deal with them and come out alive. They're all very intelligent and competent at what they do best, but they're also not immune from having a character defect which leads to their undoing.
