    Hi Davie, a huge thank you for the videos. I am so grateful for you getting back to me, especially so soon. I can't believe that answered back as I hold you in such high regard and it is amazing that we are chatting about finishing touches as I have watched your videos for several years now and things like tying flies and talking about Dollaghan, this has made my week. I have just found your "Blae and Black" video and it is very similar so I have seen how you are folding over your hackle before winding in order that the feathers point backwards towards the curvature of the hook. Thank you once again for your time and I am away to the vice for some wrapping. Ronan.

    Excellent.! And, a thing of beauty! I have tied them with guinea eyes, or without eyes, and made a hackle collar. Although, touted as a brown trout fly, I have found it serves as a rainbow fry, and they all eat it readily. Thanks Davie.

    Love these old school flies, I'd like to see a lot more of them. The book Streamer Fly Tying & Fishing by Joseph D. Bates has a bunch, including the Alexandra which is where I found out what it was.

    a great fly for nights Ive stayed a little into the dark on the kelvin and its got me a couple of sea trout in the 2lb range which for this river is good although Ive seen much bigger.
    I'm sitting making a list of the flies from your videos to tie for this season and looking forward to getting right back into the tying again and your videos are inspiration for all classes of flee tiers ,,,thanks ever so much for them all.

    Fantastic fly, I'll roll me up some of these now.
    The pattern as it sits at 5:00 is also, as you said, a great fly. It has come standard in some of Mustads fly boxes for years and years in Norway as the "Zulu Silver", just with a shorter tail of red wool. I use that pattern alot and for good reason, if I could have only five flies, that would be two of them :)

    Hi Davie, I tie a variation of this using Lady Amherst (the white and black neck feathers) as a tail and use the red feathers from the neck of the lady Amherst as a wing topping. This variant works amazingly well in the rivers and streams of Nova scotia I fish. It's worth a tie.

    Hi Davis Elder,
    I use a Law Vise but unfortunately the gentleman that made it has stopped but here's a list of vises worth looking at..Jvise, Regal, Norvise, Dyna-King, Snowbee Waldron, Apex, and HMH. There is a few others but these will give you an idea of good vises which many other tyers use...
    All the very best Davie

    Davie, this is absolutely fantastic. I am reading Peter O'Reilly's fly tying bible "Flies of Ireland" and the Alexandra will be my next fly as I intent to learn to tie every single one illustrated. I am hoping you may be able to help me though. I am chasing Dollaghan later this summer and I am trying to tie the "Ballinderry Black". A wet fly which is an excellent Dollaghan pattern. I have tied about 6 but I am having trouble with the black cock hackle, in terms of its direction towards the shank and also in finishing it as it wants to creep round the curvature of the hook sides. I am turning the fly upside down and pinching but it just isn't working. Also I am having trouble matching the dark mallard flank wing, when I think I have the colour I compare the finished fly to photo copies and it always seems slightly different. Would you please ever add a video of the "Ballinderry Black"?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi RONANMCSHANE,
      The Ballinderry Black is a lovely fly to tye as I have tyed a few over the years for a friend although I would use a hen hackle rather than a cock though a Chinese cock hackle would be a good choice as it's a good in-between, meaning it's soft enough to be used for wet flies as well as dries.. The Ballinderry is very similar to the Connemara Black so I have attached a couple of videos which you may like to see..

    I’m slightly confused about the name; i hear the Alexander a lot but when I was young it was known as the alexandra. What’s correct? It’s a beautiful fly though.
