I've been watching the other channel for years. Life on the molds. This is the channel I was looking for all along.
Hot here in Thailand too got an Aussie mate that has air at his shop, I don't but have an open-air shop. I get the raw resin add my own Styrene and Cobalt to cure well in whatever temp. Takes getting used to it allows me full cure control.I got that long table but it folds up to not take up too much room when I am not doing layup. My moulds are five-meter one-man layup and are on wheels to roll out onto the sun for that post-cure. Nice vid...

That looks great Rossco. Would love to have a go in a surf kayak. Have done a lot of kayaking here in South Africa in the rivers and the ocean but is pretty hard to keep a kayak going straight down a wave if there are no skegs so you end doing a lot of Eskimo rolls after a beating from the wave. Still a lot of fun having said that

Hello Ross. Looking really good. Here in the States, a gallon of Acetone is just under $20.00 at the big box stores. Like you said, great for cleaning up. Loving your channel!

A roll of 100 m Carbon cost in Germany around 12000€
@@thecompositesshop If Leon is correct on the price in Germany Ross that would be about $18 000 au. If that's the case you might be in a good place to export rolls to Germany and make a packet at the same time. hehe. Love your work and I am learning alot thanks mate.

Have you tried cutting your own peel ply tape from the wide rolls you have?
A chop saw should work or a fine tooth blade mounted backwards may do the trick.
Wrapping the roll where you want the cuts with some type of adhesive tape should reduce fraying.

Another great, well explained video! Have you ever used a chopper gun to lay down the chopped strand? I suspect it's faster and less wasteful but the inevitable over spray makes a mess of the shop! Also takes some experience to ensure the layer has consistent thickness!

I'm curious: I've read that the maximum elongation of fiberglass and carbon is different. So that carbon and fiberglass often doesn't mix well. Because if you have a real stress on it, the carbon is always the first that breaks, before the fiberglass even gets stressed to max elongation. Basically like the "weakest link" in a chain. Or like mixing an elastic rubber band with a stiff string, the elastic won't contribute any strength.
I guess it works here because just the carbon alone would strong enough - you need additional thickness for a kajak, both for impact resistance and stiffness.

Hi Dejay. I suspect you are right. On a short kayak like this I think risks are reduced. I believe in a 6m sea kayak with far greater stresses across the length of the boat this may be more of an issue.
I guess the reason that automobile painters have learned techniques to paint fake carbon fiber has something to do with that $45k stuff. LOL! Enjoyed the video. I wish I had known all of this back when I was glassing molds I made from large sculptures I had done. Maybe I wouldn't have had to work so hard at it. I'm loving the new channel Ross. With your roll of peal ply , can you cut up a long sheet roll into many lengths of smaller rolls of peal ply

Hi Ross, can you tell me whether you have to laminate the same day as applying the gelcoat (whilst still tacky), or could the laminating be done at another time? Thanks.
Would the process for laying up two colors of gelcoat in a straight line be similar? I'm just wondering how you would create hard lines without them squishing all over the place and getting wavy.
Hey there Rossco , I thought you would leave that top to cook off on the same side you laid all the glass down. On the video it looks like let set off upside down or mold side up I guess. Is there a difference or am I just reading way to much into it?

In this case the first layer is 300csm which is suitable o avoid print through and ensure a bit of extra impact protection. Ross

Hi Ross, I would imagine you already have the solution to your peel ply issue but in case you haven't have a look here, www.nzfibreglass.co.nz/2015/shopexd.asp?id=120 they obviously acquire it from a manufacturer or wholesale outlet so it must be available to you in Australia. very interesting information you are providing and great well presented videos by the way.
what do you make you mold stiffeners out of?
I generally use foam and wooden bracing glued and glassed to the moulds to stiffen where required.

waste of time and didnt save any weight using carbon over chop ang glass roving especially with all that poly resin carbon only provided looks
Your price is cheap. 3 man hours for a real craftsman plus supplies and equipment for $600 bucks? A bargain.
