  • This issue is all about Joining and Composite Kayak Hull and Deck. There are many ways to make this happen and my preferred method although time consuming delivers a straight and consistent result every time. This series is building to a comprehensive Composite Surf Craft build , highlighting technique and finishing of a commercially salable product.
Check out my other channel - Life On The Hulls which follows the Build of a 40ft Composite Foam Core Catamaran which we intend to Sail and Explore the the Aussie Coast and beyond.

As someone who is considering building a carbon boat, the information and techniques you provide are incredibly valuable.
    Thank you

It’s a skill not only to do the builds you do, but also to put it across in an interesting and engaging way. God knows there are lots of channels out there with dull monotonous presentation styles. You are skilled at both - which is why so many of us keep coming back over and over. Nice job 👍

G-day mate. Really enjoy your videos. You made me laugh, when you talked about the 100 mile an hour tape. In Alaska, we call it 100 mile an hour tape also. But the reason we call it 100 mile an hour tape, is because you can use it to tape up a hole in the wing of your bush plane. I have flown in more than one airplane with a duct tape patch on it. It works pretty well.
    Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.

I have to say iv enjoyed this series of fibreglass tips and tricks more than any other fibreglass videos iv found on TH-cam. It absolutely Brilliant. I will never make a Kayak or any sort of boat because were land locked here but this series will help me with so many small to medium sized fibreglass projects. I have watched many of your other videos on your other TH-cam channel (Life On The Hulls) My main project is an offroad Square Drop camping trailer.

The fancy version of your 100 mile and hour tape is called Pit Tape. Made to tape up the seams in the cargo pit of aircraft, it’s your basic duct tape on steroids. It’s flame retardant, plastic coated, fiber tape with very aggressive adhesive. It’s also complies with FAR government regulations etc. Costs like the devil but I’ve seen it used for not only its intended purpose but to seal up small holes and patches on some beat up cargo aircraft. Then it gets called 500 mile an hour tape.
NASCAR racers use something similar that has an acrylic adhesive that when exposed to oxygen hardens right up. They use it to help repair crash damaged cars and get them back in the race. They call it 200 mile an hour tape.
So there are several variations on good old duct tape, the most universal of tools. I always keep a roll in the truck. You can use it to bandage both you and the truck. Good for what ails you.

If I was building a cat like you are, I'd have to stop occasionally and do a kayak, just so that I could get something built in less than a decade of my life. Then I'd take it out and use it to relax a bit. This has been a very cool series. How many days does it take total to build this kayak, from start to sales floor? Regards, Solomon

We call that duct tape in Canada. The funny thing about that is, the one thing you don't use duct tape on is ducts.

Hey mate, I'm keen to make my own whitewater creek boat. I want it to be super light weight so I can hike up trails with it and paddle down deep creeks. High impacts are given for this style of kayaking. So I was hoping you could share your knowledge with me. If you were to build a boat like this what materials would be best? And where would it be best to put the specific materials on the boat? I was going to incorporate clips in the kayak for attaching a pack harness. Another idea is also to seal off the seat and foot well. Then add a hatch in the seat and footwell. This is for camping gear storage/water proofing and buoyancy when wet exit occur. Should be a fun project. Love to hear your advice. Am I being silly planning a composite kayak for high impact kayaking?

Looking good Ross. Could you perhaps give a bit of advice on when you should use acetone or when it’s better to use styrene when making secondary bonds. Great Chanel thanks.

The Composites Shop 👍 What’s the final weight of this thing? And also, have you got a target weight for the cat? I’m not sure where you’re at in real time but did/will you be weighing her when she’s unplugged?

Ross great video with great tips, you are makeing an old man wish he was 20 years younger so that he can make this kayak and then use it. Can't wait for the next one.
Just out of curiosity how much can you customize a kayak like this? Little holder and dry holds and what not?

If it doesn't move when it's supposed to, use a hammer. If it moves when it's NOT supposed to, use duct tape!
