*OOPS! The steak weight was wrong....It's actually a pound of steak, NOT half a pound! Just wanted to let you know incase you decide to make it :) x*

Is the pasta amount correct? I made it and everyone loved it, but it was heavy on the meat, not that that is a bad thing, just want to be sure.

Not a strange recipe at all! I have been making almost the exact thing in Australia fot the last 50 years :-)
But now I add sweet corn and sometimes a roasted red capsicum (just because they all taste good in it) and chopped BACON. Delicious. Have never had anyone, especially children, dislike it.

This dish is what we would call “American Goulash” here in the US. It was originally served during the Depression of the thirties, a real filling meal that could be stretched with more pasta. My mother told me it was a great treat during hard times and was so good that it’s still a favorite today! Love all you make and the perfect way you do it. Too bad so many families aren’t sitting down to a meal made with love these days!

My MIL made this, she added bell peppers and celery to the meat and onion and a prepared bbq sauce to the tomato soup.

Loved it! I added some blitzed up breadcrumbs with the cheese to give a crunchy topping. Just what I needed on this rainy evening.

This is one of those “Why don’t I make this more often?” recipes. So simple, yet so delicious.
Lately I have been adding a can of tomato soup to jarred spaghetti sauce. It adds just a touch of sweetness that pairs well with the strong spices in the sauce.

This is a perfect recipe for a child that is a picky eater! Thank you so much! This is great because she is such a picky eater she would rather go without eating at all than eating something she doesn't think would be good. This, I have no doubt that she will eat.

Adding burger and sauce and then baking is how I use left over mac and cheese. Adding an egg into it before baking makes a very rich dish.

Hello from Canada Cheryl! This is actually how my Mum made her Mac & Cheese, sometimes with the mince, but more often without. The tomato soup was always her quirky little ingredient that she used that no one else we knew did. Love your channel!

I love it! In Germany we call it baked Bolognese Macaroni, but we make it with Tomato puree.
We also have Cheeseburger mac but which is basically the same, except we add a bit of mustard and pickled cucumbers, it makes it taste in the end like a cheeseburger.
Both recipes are amazing, and now I've a third yummy version with cream tomato soup thanks to you! 🥰😍

“I have sworn an oath of solitude whilst this pestilence continues to scourge the land.”
While I’m not old enough to remember some of the story it’s been told by the family well in different ways for about 60 or 70 years and parts of the story go back to 1928 the year my mother turned 21. 1928 was also the year of the stock market crash the beginning of the Great Depression. At that time my mother had relatively newlywed with one child in fact I think my oldest brother was born just before Thanksgiving that year. Anyway during the Great Depression to learn how to make which we called American goulash and by 1950 my mother had lost one husband married and lost the second husband, both had died, and was living with her seven kids and her sister, and my aunt, and my aunt’s two children which meant there were five teenagers and four children under six. One time, in the early 1950s we had so little money for Thanksgiving that we could not afford to buy a turkey so my mother made this American goulash, scalloped potatoes, and green bean casserole for one Thanksgiving, and on top of that there was an elderly lady was alone for Thanksgiving and my mother said come on over if you want we're not having much but you’re welcome to share. I still get teared up thinking about that Thanksgiving it was one of the best.

I make a similar pasta dish. I got the recipe from a friend years ago. We modified it to our family's taste but it's very close to this. Delicious and filling! I use spiral pasta, spaghetti sauce, and Velveeta cheddar cheese. But I have used regular shred cheddar. I'm going to try your version. It looks just as yummy. Thank you for sharing your cooking with us. I thoroughly enjoy your channel. Lots of love from Missouri in the USA.

This looks delicious. I am curious about the can of tomato soup. Here in the USA, I can buy diluted or undiluted, the classic, bland one, or an updated type with herbs. Which do you suggest?
Btw, my dad was born in Glasgow. His mom, my granny, sounded just like you. She's been gone since 1967...but listening to you is a comfort.
Many of her recipes were likely much altered from how she'd learned to cook in Scotland. Moving to Iowa in the Depression, she improvised in several ways. For example, her griddle scones were sweetened with white KARO Syrup - likely not available in Glasgow. She always made what we call Maryland Fried Chicken. In fact, until I moved 1000 miles east to Maryland, hers was the only Maryland style chicken I'd ever had. I have no idea why she used that recipe. At my house, my Welsh-born mother always made mashed potatoes with spring onions (scallions) chopped into them -- my Dad's favorite - which I now know is traditional Scottish Champ.
Please keep posting your recipes and grocery hauls. We have Aldi here -- but with totally different products. Plus I love that you mention prices - so interesting. I try to convert in my head to $, a challenge. Some of your local prices seem very low to me, others high...which I find strange. Finally...I'm impressed you can find such red tomatoes in January! I pretty much avoid buying the hard, pinkish ones we get here in winter... just not tomato-y enough.

It's because they don't have all the chemicals and GMOs in their produce/food 😖😔😖 My sister in law just came back from a month in Scotland and Ireland for work and said the vegetables and fruit are gorgeous. Why we are living in a country that supports chemical genocide on its citizens through our air and food is scary...

Here in Maine (USA) we make this, but not always with mushrooms. We call it American chop suey. I’ve had it all of my life. I’m sure we originally got it from the UK.

Hi your mum wasn't the only one to make this lol this is one of our family favourites too Cheryl although I use a tin of Campbell's tomato soup plus a can of mushroom soup and from time to time I sometimes add garlic and basil... you've put me in the mood for this now so I'm off to kitchen to make it...just found your channel in error the other day loved it and I've subscribed...keep the recipes coming and thanks for all the inspiration I'll be making a few more x

I made this but a little differently, I didn't have lean steak mince but pork and beef mince I did strain off the excess liquid but it was still a little oily, probably the pork mince. I also didn't tomato soup (I don't like it) so I used Bolognese sauce, stock cube and a little bit of Gravy. Will try it again without tweaking it and hopefully next time it will be perfect.
