  • The Hole in the Rock trail is the kind of off-roading experience that has it all. If you like to camp and overland, rock crawl, sightsee, or actually drive historic trails, this is a destination to add to your bucket list. There is an option to travel either section of the trail; one from Escalante to the hole in the rock, and the other crosses the Eastern side of the trail from Halls crossing on Lake Powell to a view across the lake to the Hole in the Rock. The trail was established in the winter of 1879 and todays Jeep trails stay amazingly true to its path. Take a look at what Hole in the Rock Utah has to offer.

Hey great video about a historic and epic trail. Thanks for the shout out to my son Chet's Eagle Scout project. It should be noted that it took five years (and a change in park service leadership) to get the permission to mark the 'slick rocks' portion of the Hole in the Rock Trail. These cedar posts are anchored with cement in holes drilled into the sandstone. Lamont Crabtree was instrumental in obtaining permission to install these as well as positioning the posts. We hope that they stay undisturbed for a long time.

Having done the Hole in the Rock trail from the Escalante side, out and back, in a Jeep, I can tell you this: it’s definitely an adventure of a lifetime. At about 63 miles, one way, it’s an all day trip. When you’re out there in the middle of nowhere, with no cell reception, just you and your Jeep, it’s very humbling to think what those pioneers must have been thinking.

Great video. I have been lucky enough to run this trail three times over the years. Twice from the east side and once from the west. When we reached the top of the crack on the west side, we hiked down the trail that had been constructed down to the lake's edge. We were amazed knowing wagons were lowered down this route. The holes in the canyon wall to build the road were still there. And the climb back to the top was incredibly tough. My legs were on fire by the time we reached the top of the trail! But what fun we had.

Y’all should do a whole series on trails with this formula. I bet the history channel would pay you for it if they can find a spot between alien shows.

Such an amazing video! I was thinking of taking my inflatable paddle board down the hole in the rock trail to the water, anyone know if any camping I can do around there? Would be sweet to paddle board to a beach/opening and camp. Also, any advice on this type of 1 night dispersed camping at Lake Powell would be greatly appreciated.

I hate living in southeast Ohio, there are no public access trails, and almost no ohv areas, most are just mud holes or only built for atv. If i wanted to go to a public trail it would require a 4 hour drive one way
